The leader of an archaeological dig is found buried alive following the discovery of a saint's bones in the village of Midsomer Cicely.

When Zoe Dyer, leader of an archaeological dig to find the remains of St Cicely Milson, is murdered her colleague Penny Henderson suggests that she disturbed robbers after supposed treasure but Barnaby finds resistance to the project by locals who claim they already have the saint's relics on display in vicar Peter Corby's church. The one exception is Peter's brother Christopher who regards his brother 's claim to be false and encourages the dig, falling out with Zoe's husband Alex, whom he accuses of exploiting the situation. Two victims later Barnaby discovers instances of fraud, extra-marital affairs and false identity before he solves the case, differentiating between saints and sinners.—don @ minifie-1

The archaeologists working on the dig in Midsomer Cicely allegedly unearthing the body eponymous protestant martyr Cicely Milson herself is cause for consternation her annual festival, used by vicar Peter Corby to revive the parish nearly zealous, as it raises doubt about the venerated funeral monument, which is vandalized as well. Shortly afterwards Zoe Dyer, leader of the dig, is murdered and dumped in one of the excavated trenches, which is later robbed while the found artifacts are ransacked or robbed. Peter's brother, local historian Christopher, cries triumph in his long claim the church's Cecily relics are false, while looking the Milson family 'hord', a precious family treasure buried during Cathlic persecution, but he's soon pushed aside by an ambitious archaeologist and later murdered at home. DCI Barnaby and DS Nelson soon uncover many misdeeds, finding almost everyone in the village and dig crew has a skeleton in the closet, but Tom ties the knots in time for a grim crypt finale.—KGF Vissers
