Sex & Nudity

  • There is a brief, completely nonsexual bath scene between two very young girls. Their backs and the side of one's breast can be seen.
  • It is implied at one point that the main character has (keyword) Accidentally wandered into the red light district. Nothing sexual is seen or referred to.

Violence & Gore

  • Brief shocking depiction of a corpse with flies and maggots. No exposed musculature details nor bone.
  • At the climax, an explosion causes a character to lose a limb, though this is depicted symbolically. We see the bandaged stump afterwards.
  • Mass death, including children, due to wartime bombings.
  • A character's bloody stump from a missing limb is briefly shown. While shocking, the depiction is not very graphic. It depicts tattered clothing and blood. The skin is depicted tattered in the same was as the clothing, and the interior flesh is slightly darker, but not in detail. No depictions of musculature nor bone.
  • Briefly, a dirty man with darkened skin, indicating non-graphically that it is burnt, is seen sitting in the background. He is later confirmed dead. It is unclear if he was already dead at the time he was shown on screen. It is equally unclear in the source graphic novel.

Profanity

  • Official English subtitles contain no cursing. Native Japanese contains a term literally translating to "idiot," which culturally is as rude as a curse within Japanese, but not in other languages.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Adult characters are infrequently seen smoking.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Some of the bombing scenes are quite loud and intense. The images and references to tragedy are normally done in a subtle matter.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • A little girl is killed by a bomb, though we don't actually see it happen. The main character also loses her arm in the same explosion.
  • A little girl and her mother are injured by a bomb. The mother's arm is torn off and she is covered in blood and glass shards. A moment later, we see the little girl sitting next to her mother's corpse, which is rotting and covered in maggots. This is quite shocking as the rest of the film is relatively bloodless and most deaths are shown off-screen.
  • A burnt body is seen sitting in front of a house. Some characters say they didn't recognize him because his face was "melted".
