No one quite puts together a heist scene like Steven Soderbergh, but he has plenty of company. Soderbergh is back to his heist roots this week with the release of “Logan Lucky,” which injects some “Ocean’s Eleven” style into a homegrown robbery cooked up by the Logan brothers (Channing Tatum and Adam Driver), who set out to drain a local speedway during one of its biggest race days of the entire year. Aided by a predictably motley crew, including the wild-eyed Joe Bang (Daniel Craig) and their talented driver sister (Riley Keough), the Logans’ plan is ambitious and fun, but it also seems like the kind of thing that only Soderbergh could cook up (it involves digging, vacuuming, cake and prosthetic arms, of all things).

Production is underway in Serbia on the sci-fi action thriller Incoming. International action star Scott Adkins is part of the cast. Incoming will be the directorial debut of Eric "Z" Zaragoza who has been an assistant director on a plethora of small budget films over the years. Ranging from family affair like Jurassic School (What do you mean it doesn't eat the children!?!?), sci-fi thrillers like Paradox and crime thrillers like The Last Heist. He even had a hand the awfully dumb but perverse slasher flick Jersey Shore Massacre. I have to tip my hat to that one for at least killing off a handful of guidos and guidettes. Credit is due. XLrator Media is releasing the film in North America. Small budget...

Throughout a career of playing diverse characters on screen, Dolph Lundgren has gone up against Rocky Balboa, an alien drug dealer, and an army of enemies, but in his latest film, Don't Kill It, Lundgren fights what is possibly his most dangerous opponent yet: a demon that thrives on death. With Don't Kill It now out in select theaters and on VOD, I had the great pleasure of speaking with Lundgren and director Mike Mendez about balancing vicious violence with blood-drenched humor, sequel possibilities, and much more.
Congratulations on Don’t Kill It. Dolph, Jebediah Woodley is such a great character for you. When did you initially find out about this role, and what about playing Jebediah appealed to you?
Dolph Lundgren: I found out about it probably 9–10 months before we shot the film because it was postponed a couple of times, which was actually a good thing because...

The new horror thriller film “SiREN” asks the question, “How far off the rails can a bachelor party go?” The answer is pretty far, especially if there’s a predator on the loose. The film follows an apprehensive groom-to-be Jonah (Chase Williamson) whose last hurrah before tying the knot turns nightmarish when he frees a seemingly innocent girl from a supernatural sex club. Her ruthless handler will stop at nothing to recapture his prize, but while Jonah struggles to rescue the girl, he soon discovers that she is a dangerous fabled predator that has chosen him as her mate. “SiREN” co-stars Justin Welborn (“The Final Destination”), Michael Aaron Milligan (“The Last Heist”), Hayes Mercure (“Mascots”), Randy McDowell (“Paranormal Activity”) and Hannah Fierman (“American Hell”). The new sci-fi horror film “The Similars” takes audiences onto a mysterious journey where paranoia runs rampant. Set on a rainy night in a Mexico City bus station in October, 1968, eight people start experiencing a strange phenomenon. Threatened by fear and unexplained seizures, the strangers show the best and worst of themselves as they try to unravel the condition that’s invading each of them like a virus. It has garnered comparisons to “The Twilight Zone” and “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.” The film stars Gustavo Sánchez Parra (“Amores Perros”), Fernando Becerril (“The Mask of Zorro”), Cassandra Ciangherotti (“Even the Rain”), Luis Alberti (“The Golden Dream”), Humberto Busto (“Never on a Sunday”) and more. Dolph Lundgren is a cowboy hunting down an ancient demon with some bizarre rules in the trailer for Don’t Kill It...
Dolph Lundgren continues to find fun projects to keep himself busy. His latest looks really quite good fun, too.
Don’t Kill It might resemble an odd amalgam of a Western film and television’s Supernatural, at first glance. However, pitting the action in a sleepy small town, this particular piece of demon-hunting fiction puts an intriguing spin on things. Fedora and duster-rocking demon hunter Jebediah Woodley (Lundgren) wanders into town, looking to make a powerful and ancient demon his next quarry. However, there’s a catch with this one, since whoever kills the demon’s host body ends up becoming its next host, creating a horrendously homicidal chain of events. Splendid.
Consequently, even a slayer of demons as seasoned as Woodley is going to...

When does an amateur become a professional? At one point does talent push you over the edge? When does it really begin? These are just some of the questions at the heart of the new sports documentary “At All Costs,” which takes its audience into the world of Aau basketball, also known as the Amateur Athletic Union, and how it has professionalized youth basketball in America. As the business of youth basketball has skyrocketed, the pressure of finding the next big champion increases. The film follows highly recruited “blue chip” high school prospects, their families, and their teams as they travel the country competing in marquee tournaments against top-tier athletes and trying to get to the next level. Man, The Last Heist boasts one damn-fine hook – bank robbers accidentally lock themselves inside with a serial killer who starts picking them off one by one. On premise alone, Mike Mendez’s latest B-Movie hopeful is enough to get genre fans all revved-up – but dammit if execution doesn’t topple such a fragile structure. This is a low-budget flick that reeks of low-budgeting, never able to overcome actors who are obviously shooting fake guns or CGI effects that stick out like digital bullet holes. What should be a raucous heist/slasher hybrid plays like a slightly-elevated game of cops and robbers, cheap in value and lacking in performances.
Sigh – this is the genre fan in me being disappointed.

He may be in his fifties, but Henry Rollins still rocks so hard he’s forced to squeeze in an acting gig or two between touring, blogging for L.A. Weekly and recording his Kcrw podcast. He made three movies last year including The Last Heist, in theaters June 17, in which he plays a serial killer with a collection of eyeballs he keeps in a safety deposit box. Sure, he’s a bit old for a punk rocker, but not too old for murder. “They shot at me, missed and didn’t miss my friend and blew his brains out,” he tells

Lots of good movies borrow from great movies. Tarantino did it in Reservoir Dogs, and Scorsese even did it in The Departed. Good ideas come from throwbacks of famous genres past all the time. The Last Heist steals from all the heist movies, and tries to be as interesting as most of those. One can only imagine the pitch for The Last Heist: We’re going to do a sleek modern robbers movie, but one of the guys in the bank is a serial killer. That premise is all well and good, but it’s also pretty much the last thing that The Last Heist has to offer.
The plot here is as mentioned before. The Last Heist is a movie about a group of robbers who try to rob a closing safety deposit box center, but soon encounter a brutal serial killer. It’s a fun idea,...

Fledgling La-based film and TV production outfit Benattar/Thomas Productions, headed by UK executive Nigel Thomas (Killing Bono) and Us producer Rick Benattar (Ironclad), has bought rights to Iraq war book Sniper One.
The producers are aiming to move the film into production in 2016.
Written by former British soldier Sgt. Dan Mills, the account tells the true story of a British sniper unit sent into Iraq only to find themselves engaged in a full scale combat operation against overwhelming odds.
The men were besieged for six months, vastly outnumbered and with little help of rescue.
The book was brought to Benattar/Thomas by Tom Hopper, best known for his role as Billy Bones in Black Sails, who recently starred in the Benattar/Thomas feature The Fixer, which just wrapped principal photography in Ireland.
Hopper will serve as co-producer on the project as will Dan Mills.

XLrator Media, Parkside Pictures and Tadross Media Group have signed a multi-film production slate that the parties will jointly produce and distribute worldwide.
First to go will be the action-thriller If written by Mario Van Peebles, who will also direct. A production start is scheduled for autumn and further details are expected in due course.
The development is the latest piece in XLrator’s network of production partnerships and follows the deal with New Artists Alliance for three sci-fi thrillers and the pact with Benattar/Thomas for three action-thrillers. Parkside Pictures finances select titles from those slates.
“Following our collaboration with Parkside on Pandemic from New Artists Alliance and Paradox and The Last Heist from Benattar/Thomas, we saw an opportunity to expand our partnership with Parkside to develop, finance, produce and globally distribute even more high-quality, efficiently budgeted genre films for the burgeoning worldwide multi-platform universe,” said XLrator Media CEO Barry Gordon (pictured).
