Promising at the start but disappointing in the end
vvp_1415 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
From director Fyodor Bondarchuk comes another ambitious sci-fi project. But just like with his previous sci-fi double feature "Dark Planet"/"Dark Planet: Rebellion" the idea behind the film is excellent and does pose certain questions about humanity and its future and about paranoid military controlling such events. But when it comes to the storytelling and directing things aren't so pretty. The filmmakers do an excellent job in the special effects department, but the same cannot be said about either plot, dialogues or jerky editing. The main problem I had, though, was how unbelievable the story was. I just couldn't help thinking that the screenwriters, having a brilliant idea for the film, had to fill the two-hour screen time with some nonsense just to get from point A to point B. Most of it didn't make any sense.

The Russian title of the film has a double meaning and can be translated as both "Attraction" (the aliens being attracted to the controversial human race or the attraction between the girl and the alien) and "Gravity" (their ship experiencing a breakdown and is pulled by Earth gravity into the atmosphere).

So it starts off with some excellent CGI in the first few minutes with an alien ship flying through the air chased and being shot at by fighter jets and crashing down in the middle of Moscow's highly populated residential high-rise apartment blocks area. There is a heavy military involvement right from the start, with emergency military headquarters put in place and a secure perimeter around the crash site set up. Well, a promising, ambitious and therefore demanding start for a story of the first alien contact in human history.

From this point on things go from bad to worse. The movie does feel like a cross-breed between Independence Day, K-PAX and District 9, but precisely because these are very different movies (an action packed epic, a philosophical drama and a reality show set up in dirty slums with street violence and abuse of the helpless aliens), one could not cross-breed them. Well, this flick tries to be everything of the above: a philosophical action-packed alien- contact filled-with-CGI-and-military-hardware gangster street fighting school-girl love story. And precisely because of that it fails in each of these departments.

* WARNING - SPOILERS *

After a few minutes this alien contact "epic" turns into a teenage school-gang movie. The closer it gets to the end the smaller and sillier the action becomes. It might as well have been naughty adventures of a school girl who falls out with her military colonel father several times a day (who's running the operation), has a couple of boyfriends one of whom just happens to be an alien and the other - a brokenhearted violent thug from a gang trying to kill the poor alien.

There are lots of things in the story that don't make any sense. For example: kids being able to go in and out and walk around unnoticed in the supposedly tightest security area around the ship and even carrying a huge alien bio-suit out of the area; the school girl driving into the area in a Range Rover and carrying out a wounded alien, then taking him to a hospital room unchecked and performing blood transfusion herself using sophisticated equipment; the alien looking just like a bloke from around the corner, speaking Russian, getting arrested by the police and the girl walking into the police building and just getting him out of there. It just goes on and on. I don't mind some oddities in a film but as long as they are explained or made look logical, it's fine. Not in this film. It just feels the creators don't have much respect for the audience.

* END OF SPOILERS *

Right at the end, though, the creators do manage to hit the right buttons and rap up the story with a rather nice and even emotional ending, saving it from a complete disaster with some more excellent CGI from inside the alien ship and finally some words that make sense but it hardly turns the movie into a piece of art.

Points for the idea and special effects. The rest ranges from average to disappointing. Worth taking a look, though, if you are a sci-fi fan. There is a link to a trailer with English subs on this page under External sites.

Some brilliant special effects but hampered with a leaden central story-line
Red-Barracuda1 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
An alien spacecraft crash lands in Moscow after the Russian military try to shoot it down. A humanoid alien eventually emerges and interacts with a girl, who falls in love with him but her jealous ex-boyfriend tries to intervene violently.

It's not every day you get the chance to see a big budget Russian sci-fi effects extravaganza. For this reason alone, Attraction makes for interesting viewing. Its Russian setting and flavour give it a different feel which makes it more distinctive. It does have to be said though that the romantic story-line wasn't really all that good, with the alien contact part of the story not done in a very interesting way. The alien himself is a little bit dull in all honesty, I was also a bit disappointed that he was basically completely human looking - I thought they could have come up with a being at least a little different from a regular looking guy from 2017. On the other hand, the special effects work was very good. The crash landing sequence was a blistering spectacle that was exceptionally well delivered to the screen in an exciting and highly visceral way. Unlike the dull alien, the spacecraft and his exoskeleton suit were great bits of design work. So, the overall feeling about this alien contact movie is a bit mixed. On the negative side, it had an uninteresting central love story and alien, yet it gained plus points for its Russian flavour and brilliant special effects and design work. Overall, it's definitely one worth seeing if you are a sci-fi buff, it's just a movie that could have been a lot better with a few tweaks.

Wonderful Sci-fi with Terrible Dubs
DancingBookworm6 October 2019
If you can get past the terrible English dubs of the main cast - don't ask me why the tertiary characters were good and they skimped on the main cast - this is a beautiful sci-fi gem.

You can see the quality of acting behind the dubs. The story is good. The visuals were superb.

I wish Amazon had it in the original Russian with English subs.

Flaws could've easily been avoided
Top_Dawg_Critic11 June 2020
It's a shame that a seasoned writer didn't proofread the screenplay to fix the many plot and technical issues. The editing has to be one of the worst I've seen. The directing was sub-par. The English dubbing was decent, and the cinematography and visuals were stunning. Acting was actually not bad. My generous 7/10 could've and should've easily been a 9/10. Such a shame.

Really bad
dalehuhtala6 August 2019
Not sure how so many people are giving this movie high ratings! The story is terribly fragmented and poorly written. The effects aren't bad but the production and editing is not good. Many of the events seem out of order and just don't make sense. The motivations behind their actions make no sense at all! I laughed at how bad so many parts were...that's really the only entertainment I got out of the movie. It reminded me a lot of the poorly done Chinese movies. They have a very long way to go!

G! E! (Good enough!)
rsvp3215 January 2019
I'll watch anything sci fi, but at the same time I consider myself a sci fi snob and will be extremely, harshly critical of what I watch.

This was worth my time. I had it on as background while I was multitasking, but it quickly grabbed my full attention.

Lots of room from improvement, but very acceptable as it stands. I'm sure we'll see that improvement in future offers.

I'm really enjoying our current availability of fare from sources other than Hollywood, especially Independents and Europe/Russia/Aust/NZ.

Hollywood lately has a rot, where almost everything movie and television uses social agenda pandering central to the plot. "Attraction" is simple entertainment, and that's all I want!

Good job!

Decent SciFi
russell_anam1 May 2017
Quite a decent SciFi. The effects are absolutely top notch! Seriously, Russia needs to make more movies like this and also distribute them in English. On the other hand, the story is a bit weak and if this is how Russians behave in real life, then maybe the western narrative of "aggressive Russia" is not that false.

Attrazione mancata
simonegallina11 June 2017
Beautiful special effects and original alien design; It's a shame, because the idiocy of the plot (young Russians acting as dumb) makes it a wasteful opportunity to develop a good sci-fi movie. Lately, Russia has given sample on how to compete with Hollywood (see Guardians), but the difference between making a good movie and a bad one are always the same: a strong story with new ideas.

I don't understand the low rating
arendmaatkamp24 April 2017
I absolutely love the design and CGI. It was well worth my time. The story ain't that bad either, good acting.. as far as I can tell but I don't speak any Russian so.. who knows..

For me this one ranks right next to films like: Edge of tomorrow, Oblivion, Elysium, District 9 & Pacific Rim.

I might be biased towards SciFi flicks tho.. haha.. and it's nice to see aliens come down somewhere else then Los Angeles :-P

So.. If you love SciFi.. Give it a try..

Good CGI, immensely unpleasant actors, poor story
DanielNistrean30 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This movie would have a chance if they invested time to create inspiring or terrifying characters and if story was more complex. If a sci-fi movie doesn't make you ask questions after you watched it, then it's a bad movie. It had it's own moments but aliens looking like humans ? Even if we go to mars, in 1000 years people there will have different skin color. In short it's ok for a single watch if you are bored, not something to go to cinema but CGI are really good.

Good/Bad mix... to never watch again
andletlive19 July 2019
Interesting because it's somewhat differente vs "western" films. Great concept of story, excellent visuals, charming actors; but ALL RUINED with poor writing, and no better direction. Russian? Really? Looks intentionally phony. Characters are terribly inconsistent -- caricatures of people acting out-of-character to fit each "need twist" in the story. I bothered to write this becasue I liked the good enough, to feel very disappointed with the whole.

Better than expected and current rating
jjohn-9226723 April 2017
Since this is a first Russian SiFi movie I watched in this genre, I must say that I am impressed. For the Hollywood SiFi movie lovers, this may not be the perfect match, although visual effects are close in quality. They don't keep you tense for a long duration, there are "hidden" messages and human touch in the movie. Its not a John Wayne western type of the movie, like most Hollywood ScFi movies, where you have to kill, die or win on the end for the movie to have some closure. On the bad side of the movie, there are no huge up and down moments in the movie either and "gang" (or social) type of violence is on a bit high end for my taste. Some may not like ending itself (Hollywood fans would expect different ending), but from my standpoint it was a very decent ending and still very human.

Message > Movie
schmidtoli31 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILER ALERT

I agree with most people saying that the plot is somewhat boring and that the situation between a young girl, falling in love and her ex boyfriend trying to fight an alien race is pretty stupid. But the whole idea or message of this movie is far more important than being a critic and looking at these small details like design, characters etc.

The message is pretty clear and a thought provoking one. The way we have evolved, we are dangerous to human kind ourselves. The fact that we are involved in warfare, killing humans and not reaching our full potential of living in harmony makes this movie quite interesting. Especially since this one is a Russian production and no Hollywood everyday movie. Because in a Hollywood production most likely the Aliens would have been hostile and the military would have saved us yet again (LET'S INVEST IN THE MILITARY - PROPAGANDA).

Instead it shows that civilisations who have evolved passed their planets or galaxy have had to overcome differences between their own race. Reach their full potential to grow as a race and discover all the benefits of working together for the greater good. At this very moment, humanity is drifting apart. Building walls, killing people, animals, destroying the forests, the oceans etc etc.

Until we start letting compassion and love thrive, we will never reach our full potential and will never be able to understand the most important aspects of life.

This is what this movie is about after all.

So my take, it is quite poor from a characterisation point of view, the story line is lacking some sensibility in terms of realistic human behaviour (however, there are some weirdos out there so maybe it is accurate), but there are some minor funny elements as well thought provoking details (for example how many humans we have killed over the past 5k years and how long they see humanity live before it goes instinct, killing itself). I would recommend this movie. But surely, it is not for everyone.

Absolute ball ocks!!
ywn-6705828 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
What a waste of time. The CGI was good, but the storyline could have been written by a 5 year old. The characters were wooden with the female lead extremely annoying. You just keep wishing for her to meet a grisly and painful end. As for Colonel Lebedev, I wouldn't leave him in charge of cleaning a toilet. His idiotic daughter takes his gun from the home safe, his security pass and yet again his work pistol. And why is this incompetent fool always bringing her to the frontline instead of keeping her locked up in a cell. A pity that the lowest score is 1 as this merits a big fat 0.

Better than Indepandance Day
Johndemontaigne-3280616 September 2017
This movie is totally worth watching and it shows clearly, that even movies are politically judged, rather than artistically. Its sad to see such a bad rating for this movie, just because it is Russian made. The actors are charismatic and the story is good. If you like scifi movies and want a different atmosphere, than the usual Hollywood one, you will be satisfied for sure.

Great Russian foray into the Sci-Fi genre
Mikelikesnotlikes3 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A spaceship lands on earth, (Russia), after suffering a malfunction. The injured alien is rescued by, and interacts with, a human school-girl who falls in love with him. She helps him return to the spaceship but must fight a very jealous ex-boyfriend who doesn't want to let her go. The story has been told a few times but the authentic Russian flavour lends the premise some originality. The CGI is very good and the acting is up to scratch as once again foolish humans almost cause their city to be obliterated by mindlessly attacking the aliens. No wonder earth is off limits to this intelligent species as too dangerous to visit.

My biggest problem were the subtitles (very badly converted by voice recognition software for the deaf into English). It took an extra half second or so each time to process what each subtitle was actually trying to say, and concentrating on the words took a lot away from watching the film.

All up it was pretty good. Recommended, but try to find a better translated version.

I lack the words
alrod31211 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I really have a hard time finding the words to express how bad this movie is. As soon as you discover what is found inside the alien you will understand what I mean. A few outdated CGI tricks cannot redeem this senseless story.

A decent Sci-Fi that is worth your time
procletnic30 September 2017
The are two thing the Russians are not particularly good at - making luxury cars and shooting quality sci-fi. The latter is beginning to change though.

"Attraction" is an engaging sci-fi thriller that has a very familiar Hollywood taste, which isn't a good thing. The beginning of the movie is very promising with lots of great shots and cool CGI effects. Unfortunately as the movie progresses to the second act you quickly realize that this will be one of those "why the *beep* would they do that" movies. There are severe problems with character motivation and the actions of the protagonists feel very unnatural. The movie doesn't hide its intentions to try to appeal to the casual crowd rather than the sci-fi nerds. It's message is painfully clichéd and has been done over and over again with better results.

Despite all of this, "Attraction" manages to keep you interested and entertained. It certainly isn't a masterpiece but it's worth your time.

Awful
Bernard-Weasley14 May 2017
I'm sure if the movie was listed under the comedy genre, then it would get at least 8 stars from me. Sadly though, the movie took itself way too seriously, and ended up turning into a sad joke.

PLOT

What plot? The entire plot looked like it was patched up together by a team of high school students and a few wannabe love drama writers. Did they actually forgot that most of the movie watchers in this world are grown-up adults, and not teenagers?

STUPIDITY: 10/10

RATING: 0.5/10 (forgive me for being generous)

Great movie if you look behind the curtains
roy-795161 September 2017
First of all, the overall film and CGI-quality is definitely great. Great cut and most of the actors do a solid work in this Sci-Fi movie. If you are just looking for a Sci-Fi action, popcorn movie and indeed you can handle it in that way, but then you'll miss what lies behind the curtain.

The action of this films pretends a story about aliens crashing down in Russia and trying to get back to their home planet while the military, as always, is trying to get their hands on the alien technology (away from separate other points that should not be spoilered here).

But the most tensioning aspect of this solid movie from my perspective, is the hidden way the director Fedor Bondarchuk speaks out his criticism about the actual Russian government(some extremely short snapshots of Putin to name the evil) and especially how people in Russia are manipulated by placing fake-news in media and social media. And not to forget the suppressing military, striking first and after that looking for what really happened. Also you get a feeling how easy the people let the government manipulate their mind without thinking only a minute what really could hide behind the story. And at least how fast you can organize a mob to believe that everything that is alien, is evil and has to be killed.

Really courageous to speak out that many criticism (and a lot more that can't described here) were everyone knows, that the suppressing Russian regime won't tolerate that.

For me a great movie, with some sense of humor and irony.

Above Average Sci-Fi
phoenix-caner7 October 2020
Although story is not usual invasion story, it has similar versions in other movies. It is also rushed and has some holes in it, but it is nothing new for this genre. People say story is weak, but after covid, I really cant say stupid decisions characters take are unrealistic. As others say it is a love story suggesting love can overcome everything. Also it is trying to give a message we all figured out by now, that we will destroy ourselves. other than that acting is ok, it is watchable. Visuals are very good, in fact might even be the best cgi for a while, and visuals made me watch the movie mostly. If you like sci-fi and have nothing better to do this might be good to pass the time.

Abstraction Movie
bobluce-2213324 February 2019
This is a weak sci-fi love flick. The CGI imagery is exceptional. There is ethnic varIety in the selection of young actors, showing the racial diversity in Russia but none of actors develop into 3 dimensional characters. The film paints Russian youth with irrational phobias and depicts the hierarchy of the Russian politicians and military leaders as totally ineffective and sissified. The story is irrational, especially the love-hate relationships. The only take away is give extraterrestrials a chance to explain their intensions.

Far better than I expected
abisio23 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
There are several common points between this movie and The Arrival; but while the later takes a most philosophical and in my opinion unsatisfying resolution; GRAVIY (or Attraction) took a somewhat romantic road but end up being about our communications problems as humans and obviously with an alien race. During a meteor show in Moscow; and alien vessel gets hits and descend to Earth. Russian air forces immediately shoot the descending falling down in the middle of the city and causing great havoc and hundreds of deaths. In an attempt to communicate; one alien inform the military commanding officer that nobody could get near the vessel and they will repair it and leave; but need some time. Military surrounds the area creating an state of siege with curfews and the obvious confrontations between armed forced and civilians when the communication is restricted and on a need to know basis. The alien presence creates a discomfort on many people under the impression of being invaded.

After a somewhat slow paced start; and very serious events; the young protagonist lady gets in contact with one alien; that without his menacing suit or armor looks handsome; and she try to help him. The movie shifts from serious science fiction to light comedy and then to romantic comedy.

Things keep moving in a darker direction after a while; getting to violent last act that somewhat justifies everything that happened before.

I cannot tell that I was fully satisfied with the overall story but compared to The Arrival; this is more enjoyable and far less forced. The conclusion are sadly very similar; and not particularly optimistic.

In terms of production values and digital FX; this movie is quite impressive. Acting is really quite good too; specially Alexander Petrov as the deceived boyfriend and violent teenager. Irina Starshenbaum performs very well too; as the rebellious military daughter who gets involved with the extraterrestrial. She sweet and sympathetic enough to be believed.

In brief; it is two hours plus movie taking from The Arrival (2016), STARMAN (1984) and E.T. (1982); it is not outstanding but is worth your time.
