If there’s one thing you can say about Kristen Stewart, it’s that she refuses to be pigeon-holed. From a kid hiding from home-invaders in Panic Room, to the centre of a supernatural love-triangle in the Twilight saga, to thoughtful indie dramas like Personal Shopper or channelling the people’s princess in Spencer, Stewart has ran the gamut throughout her career, playing in all kinds of genres and with all kinds of characters.
With Love Lies Bleeding, though, the pulpy new revenge thriller from Saint Maud director Rose Glass, we’re seeing yet another whole new side to her. She is gym manager Lou, an androgynous lesbian stuck in a small town, trying and failing to cut ties with her criminal father – that is, until bodybuilder Jackie [Katy O’Brian] arrives, and shakes up her entire world. Here, Stewart tells Empire about what makes Lou so different to herself,...

For actress Kristen Stewart, starring in “Twilight” has been both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, the worldwide popularity of the five-film vampire series helped to make Stewart one of the most recognizable actresses on the planet. Unfortunately, with that fame came the tabloids, and before long, Stewart became better known for being in gossip magazines than for her considerable skills as an actress, seemingly destined to be tagged forever as “that girl from ‘Twilight.'” Fortunately, a number of international directors such as Olivier Assayas and Pablo Larrain came to the rescue, looking past the gossip to see the potential and creating roles for Stewart that were finally worthy of her talents.
Stewart’s filmography encompasses a wide range of genres, from biopics and mother/daughter dramas (“Still Alice”) to romantic comedies and nail-biting thrillers (“Panic Room”). While she has inhabited a wide variety of characters,...

If you haven’t yet seen A24 and Saint Maud director Rose Glass’ new movie Love Lies Bleeding, you should definitely get out there and support it in theaters while you can. The critically acclaimed romantic thriller is one of this year’s best movies so far, driven by incredible lead performances from Katy O’Brian and the always compelling Kristen Stewart.
Katy O’Brian just landed a huge role in Mission Impossible 8, but what’s next for Kristen Stewart? Well, for starters, don’t expect to see her in any Marvel movies anytime soon.
Stewart tells the “Not Skinny but Not Fat” podcast, “I will likely never do a Marvel movie … it sounds like a fucking nightmare, actually.” She further explains, “You would have to put so much money and so much trust into one person … and it doesn’t happen.”

April’s an uncommonly strong auteurist month for the Criterion Channel, who will highlight a number of directors––many of whom aren’t often grouped together. Just after we screened House of Tolerance at the Roxy Cinema, Criterion are showing it and Nocturama for a two-film Bertrand Bonello retrospective, starting just four days before The Beast opens. Larger and rarer (but just as French) is the complete Jean Eustache series Janus toured last year. Meanwhile, five William Friedkin films and work from Makoto Shinkai, Lizzie Borden, and Rosine Mbakam are given a highlight.

After spending time with Neil Jordan’s not-campy-enough stalker film Greta (listen) and Olivier Assayas’ Kristen Stewart starring 2016 thriller Personal Shopper (listen), it’s time to revisit Alfred Hitchcock with a look at his 1951 film, Strangers on a Train.
In the film, eccentric and unbalanced Bruno Anthony (Robert Walker) approaches successful tennis player Guy Haines (Rope‘s Farley Granger) on a train with a proposal: they should commit a murder for the other.
While Guy laughs it off, Bruno strangles Guy’s ex-wife Miriam (Kasey Rogers), then stalks the tennis player in an effort to force him to fulfill his end of the bargain.
As Guy struggles under the weight of the police’s scrutiny, he confides in his new girlfriend Anne (Ruth Roman) and her younger sister Babs (Pat Hitchcock) for help. Can Guy avoid arrest? Will Bruno ruin his political aspirations? And how does one of the...

Ever since Kristen Stewart came out as gay in an SNL monologue, homophobes have been unnecessarily agitated by her. Thereafter, Stewart has often been used as evidence to claim that youngsters are being “groomed” into adopting s*xual and gender identities that do not coincide with heteronormative standards. Even recently, her new photoshoot with Rolling Stone, which played with masculine-coded fashion, was targeted and criticized.

Appearing on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to discuss her new movie Love Lies Bleeding, Stewart purposefully stood by her photoshoot while sending out a simple “f*ck you” message to her haters.

Nowadays, it seems odd to remember a time when the acclaimed, Oscar-nominated Kristen Stewart wasn’t considered a great actor, or even a good one. But from 2008 to 2012, that was the prevailing opinion about the Los Angeles-born performer’s abilities — or, at the very least, the prevailing opinion about her on the internet.
A child actor who worked consistently since she was 12, when she portrayed Jodie Foster’s daughter in David Fincher thriller “Panic Room,” Stewart practically exploded into a global film star when she headlined 2008’s “Twilight,” based on the popular vampire teen romance novels by Stephenie Meyer. Opposite instant sex symbol Robert Pattinson, Stewart was the moody, shy, awkward Bella Swan, the type of female heroine whose specificity takes a backseat to general relatability, so the tween girls reading the books can imagine themselves in her shoes.

We’ve spent February discussing Albert Lewin’s 1945 adaptation of The Portrait of Dorian Gray (listen), the perfectly serviceable remake of Friday the 13th (listen), and Pedro Almodóvar’s controversial 2011 thriller The Skin I Live In (listen). Now we’re wrapping up the month with Neil Jordan’s wacky May/December stalker film, Greta (2018).
In the film, Chloë Grace Moretz plays Frances, a new to New York girl who befriends an older woman, Greta (Isabelle Huppert) after returning her lost purse. While the pair strike up an unlikely friendship, Frances’ roommate Erica (Maika Monroe) finds the relationship unusual.
What Frances doesn’t know is that Greta is more than a sad, lonely old woman. She’s got secrets in a trunk, a syringe full of sedatives, and a penchant for burying her secrets, including private investigator Stephen Rea, in the basement.
Will Frances wind up like all of Greta’s other girls?...

Olivier Assayas, the celebrated French director of “Clouds of Sils Maria” and “Irma Vep,” is making his Berlinale competition debut this year with “Suspended Time,” his most personal film to date.
Speaking to Variety ahead of the movie’s premiere at the Berlinale, Assayas says the film retells his experience during the lockdown and is based on his personal diary.
“When I was writing this diary, I felt that despite my anxieties and doubts or fears, it was an idyllic period, to be confined in the countryside,” he says. “It was a time where we believed in a form of utopia and as soon as society got back in action, it dissolved.”
Narrated by Assayas and woven with archival material, the comedy stars Vincent Macaigne as the director’s alter-ego, Paul, a well-known filmmaker who is confined with his music journalist brother Etienne (Micha Lescot) and their girlfriends Morgane (Nine d’Urso...

The memes won’t let you forget, but 2019 was half a decade ago. That was also the year Olivier Assayas’ Wasp Network––an odd return to the realm of his TV series Carlos, and subsequently picked up by Narcos-era Netflix––premiered at the Venice Film Festival. That was Assayas’ last feature, making the intervening period (Irma Vep for HBO aside) the longest dry patch of his 38-year career. The dexterous director returns this week to the Berlinale with the aptly titled Suspended Time, a personal essay wrapped up in an effortless comedy that shows no signs whatsoever of long gestation.
Naturally, it’s all the better for it. Appearing as both leading man and (not for the first time) director surrogate, Vincent Macaigne stars as Paul, a filmmaker surviving the summer of 2020 with his music-journalist brother Ettienne (Micha Lescot) and their new partners, Morgane and Carole, in the agreeable surrounds of their childhood home.

No two words can strike fear into the heart of a critic quite like “Covid movie,” and yet with a director as accomplished as Olivier Assayas it seemed reasonable to hold out hope of something more than the low-key cringe humor of a neurotic germaphobe obsessing about masks and social distancing and possible grocery contamination. Sadly, that’s a big part of what you get in the tedious Suspended Time (Hors du Temps). Most of us would never think our experience in the early, anxious days of pandemic lockdown was of much interest to anyone outside our social pod, but filmmakers keep making that mistake. They need to stop.
Perhaps Assayas was so caught up in the meta film industry satire of his spry reimagining of Irma Vep for HBO that he couldn’t resist casting Vincent Macaigne again as another version of himself. Macaigne is mildly amusing as a film director named Paul,...

Ready for another deliciously outré performance from Lars Eidinger, everybody’s favorite German arthouse weirdo (known for his work in Personal Shopper, Clouds of Sils Maria, White Noise, and on and on)? Well, strap in for Sterben (Dying) from German director Matthias Glasner.
In the exclusive first trailer from The Match Factory (see below), Eidinger plays Tom, a Berlin conductor with more than a few personal issues to deal with.
Dying is a rare new feature from Glasner who, unlike his prolific star, has kept his filmography tight. (His last feature was 2012’s Gnade.) Judging by the trailer, and Glasner’s previous work, including 2006 Silver Bear winner The Free Will, Dying looks like another powerful mix of melodrama, wry humor and philosophical ponderings about the “big questions” of life and, given the title, of death.
“The name of the piece… is ‘Dying’,” a high-strung composer, played by Robert Gwisdek, instructs the orchestra.

Playtime has boarded Olivier Assayas’ “Suspended Time,” a Covid-era comedy about two couples spending lockdown together. Produced by Olivier Delbosc of Curiosa Films, and by Assayas’ own Vortex Sutra, the pandemic farce is hotly tipped to compete at the Berlin Film Festival next month.
Recent Assayas stalwart Vincent Macaigne leads the cast as Etienne, a filmmaker – and once again director stand-in – locked down with his music journalist brother, Paul, and locked in the family home with respective spouses, Morgane and Carole.
“Every room, every object, reminds them of their childhood, and the memories of [those] absent,” reads the synopsis. “This compels them to measure the distance that separates them from each other and the roots they share, those of their ground zero. As the world around them is becoming increasingly unsettling, unreality, and even a disturbing strangeness, invades their daily gestures and actions.”
The project furthers the director’s ongoing partnership with Macaigne and Hamzawi,...

“I will quit the fucking business.”
Kristen Stewart is jabbing her finger into the couch we’re sharing, speaking with increasing speed and ferocity about what has driven her to this brink. She’s spent five years fruitlessly trying to drum up financing for what she hopes will be her feature directing debut, “The Chronology of Water,” based on the stream-of-consciousness memoir by bisexual author Lidia Yuknavitch. She’s so hacked off about it that she’s about to ruin the furniture.
“I won’t make a-fucking-nother movie until I make this movie,” she declares. Then she sits back and breaks into nervous laughter. “Can’t wait for my agents to read that.”
Stewart has clearly entered the “fuck it” phase of her career.
Don’t worry: She isn’t going anywhere yet. Next week, Stewart is packing her snow boots for her eighth trek to the Sundance Film Festival,...

Adapted from Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Netflix’s limited series “All the Light We Cannot See” sets two unlikely kindred spirits on a collision course as World War II begins in France when Germany occupied the country. Shawn Levy directed all four episodes of Steven Knight’s scripts.
Marie-Laure LeBlanc (Aria Mia Loberti) and Werner Pfennig (Louis Hoffman) share curiosity and empathy, which translates across their opposing countries and positions in the war. Werner’s skill for fixing and translating radios leads him to a high position in the Nazi effort to decode secret broadcasts that their targets might send. Marie-Laure herself becomes a broadcaster after her father moves her to her uncle’s home in a small, seaside French town.

Spoiler warning: This article openly discusses the full plot of “The Others.”
It’s been said many times that every love story is a ghost story, and the pop art of the 21st century would seem to suggest that the opposite is also true.
The rise of “elevated horror,” the traumafication of genre narratives, and the ever-increasing role that supernatural forces appear to be playing in arthouse fare have combined to recenter the heartsick longing — romantic or otherwise — that has always haunted tales of grief and loss, even if only from the shadows or in the subtext. These days, a movie or TV show about ghosts is less likely to scare you than it is to make you cry, and the ones that manage to do both tend to rely on the former as a means of accomplishing the latter; look no further than the work of Mike Flanagan, whose...

The 2023 Berlin International Film Festival, the Berlinale, kicks off Thursday morning, and all eyes will be on Kristen Stewart.
The Twilight star, who, with films like Olivier Assayas’ Personal Shopper, Pablo Larraín’s Spencer, and David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future, has become a darling of European and independent cinema, is president of the Berlinale jury this year, and will be leading the team of five women and two men judging the films in the 2023 competition.
Stewart is the only bold-faced Hollywood name on this year’s jury, which includes the last two Golden Bear winners — Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude, whose wild satire Bad Luck Banging or Looney Porn took Berlin’s top prize in 2021, and Carla Simón, who won Berlin last year with her Catalan family drama Alcarràs. Also on the jury are veteran Hong Kong director Johnnie To (Election, Vengeance), Iranian-French actress Golshifteh Farahani (Paterson), German filmmaker Valeska Grisebach (Western) and U.

An adrenaline junkie crosses tracks with a motorbike stunt ring, and the rest is a bloodied history.
Director Lola Quivoron’s feature debut “Rodeo” centers on a gearhead (Julie Ledru) who gets deeper with a con artist crew of motorcyclists. The film, produced by Charles Gillibert, debuted at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Coup de Cœur du Jury special prize.
Per the film’s official synopsis, “hot-tempered and fiercely independent, Julia (Ledru) is a gearhead who thrives in hostile environments and turns every situation to her advantage. She has a talent for scamming condescending men who think it’s cute that she shows interest in their used motorbikes and can’t fathom her riding away with gleeful abandon. Her obsession with the high-octane world of urban Rodeos, illicit gatherings where riders show off their bikes and latest daring stunts, sparks a chance meeting with a volatile clique.

Per the film’s official synopsis, “hot-tempered and fiercely independent, Julia (Ledru) is a gearhead who thrives in hostile environments and turns every situation to her advantage. Her obsession with the high-octane world of urban Rodeos, illicit gatherings where riders show off their bikes and latest daring stunts, sparks a chance meeting with a volatile clique.

Olivier Assayas did what seems like the impossible: The writer-director remade his own 1996 film “Irma Vep” as an HBO limited series.
Why? Well, Assayas saw the need to update the meta message of fame, mirrored celebrity, and even international filmmaking collaborations for the modern age. He felt the original film, starring his now ex-wife Maggie Cheung, has “nothing to do with the world.”
“We are in a moment of very deep transformation of whatever we call cinema, in terms of aesthetics, in terms of financing, in terms of viewing,” Assayas explained to the Los Angeles Times. “‘Irma Vep,’ the original one and same with this one, has one foot in the past and one foot in the present.”
A reimagined film would have been “impossible,” according to Assayas, who then opted for television. “No one would have financed it,” he stated. “It would’ve made no sense.”

Josh Charles (We Own This City, The Good Wife) and Norwegian actor Anders Danielsen Lie, who plays Renate Reinsve’s love interest Aksel in Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person in the World, have signed on to co-star alongside Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway in the upcoming psycho-thriller Mothers’ Instinct.
Chastain and Hathaway play Alice and Celine, best friends and neighbors who live superficially perfect lives as suburban housewives in 1960s America. But a tragic accident shatters that facade and guilt, suspicion and paranoia combine to disolve their sisterly bond, turning the two mothers against one another in a psychological battle of wills.
Mothers’ Instinct is based on the Barbara Abel’s novel Derrière la Haine, which was adapted by Olivier Masset-Depasse as the 2018 Belgian thriller Duelles. Sarah Conradt (50 States of Fright) adapted the English-language script.

On a cloudy day in late October, at a chic hotel steps from the Champs Elysées, Alicia Vikander sat glued to her phone. The actress was silent, leaning back on an antique chair while her fingers tap-danced across an iPhone screen. She was idle and hard at work, making her stillness pop under the key lights and dollying camera tracking her every facial tic. While the Hotel Raphael ably played itself in this quiet scene, Vikander had more of a dual role: On set was Alicia, the Sweden-born dancer turned Hollywood star, and onscreen she was Mira, a different actress taking a break from blockbusters to shoot an auteur series in France. The echoes would hardly stop there.

Perhaps you know Kristen Stewart best for her role as Bella Swan, the sensitive, lip-biting heroine of the mega-popular "Twilight Saga." Or perhaps you know her better for her career since the "Twilight" films ended, which has seen her evolve into a darling of the art house scene thanks to movies like "Clouds of Sils Maria," "Personal Shopper," and "Spencer." Really, whether you prefer to watch KStew romance vampires or wrestle with the pangs of her existence, her work offers something for everyone.

French director Olivier Assayas walked a tightrope with his 1996 unclassifiable, meta-moviemaking drama “Irma Vep.” It starred Hong Kong icon Maggie Cheung as herself, starring in a French film whose director was played by cinema legend Jean-Pierre Leaud, as they attempted to remake Louis Feuillade’s classic silent film serial “Les Vampires.” A treatise on Hollywood? A lampoon of the French film industry? A meta exercise in the negotiations between a major actress and a serious director? All of the above.
Now, Olivier Assayas is remaking his own movie for television with “Irma Vep,” coming to HBO and HBO Max on June 6 and now with Alicia Vikander in the role originated by Cheung. The show is first set to stop off at the Cannes Film Festival — Assayas’ stomping grounds with films like “Personal Shopper” and “Summer Hours” in competition and also the original “Irma Vep” in Un Certain Regard — before hitting the small screen.
