It's got a nice premise even though it is impossible not to see the similarities with the Black Mirror episode "White Christmas". We follow the main character trying to achieve something but she constantly gets sidetracked with other things which makes the story a bit convoluted. It almost felt like they added these extra events to turn this into a feature length film.
It's about a girl trying to wake her brother up from a coma through a drug that lets you have time-compressed VR experiences.

OtherLife had potential to be a great film, but the story development fell through. Great premise, great idea, thrilling, but no real story. Decent acting but not very well scripted. All in all, a fairly predictable movie, especially the ending.
Would recommend watching Total Recall, the Matrix, or Inception instead of this one if you want a more engaging and well-written movie with a good execution, however, this one will suffice if you're bored and just looking for any thrilling Sci-Fi to watch.
The "DMT security" was a nice reference to DMT, the psychedelic drug, which I laughed at. Clearly this was the source of inspiration for the writers, considering the DMT-type visuals that were added in some scenes.
5.5/10

OtherLife is the story of a piece of software that can transport you into a dream-like world (like Total Recall). The movie discusses the implications of the software through the 2 developers' secret projects with the software.
For a low-budget science fiction movie there is a lot of positive things to point out. I was personally impressed with the visual effects and the courage to tell the story through the language of cinematography (dolly zooms, Dutch angles, color-grading, etc.). When it comes to acting and sound design I found the movie did a decent job and it never felt like an amateur low-budget movie to me.
Unfortunately there were 2 things that annoyed me about the movie: Firstly, the movie takes ideas from existing sci-fi which makes the story unoriginal and predictable (to some extend). It reminded me in particular of 2 Black Mirror episodes; White Christmas and Playtest. If you haven't seen Black Mirror I think you will find this more original, less predictable and consequently enjoy it more. Secondly, the protagonist is a very smart woman working on the software, but she only appears to be smart when working on the software and not in any other part of her life. I don't want to give any examples of this since that would spoil the plot. If you don't expect to share these issues then I believe you will like or maybe even love this movie.
In conclusion i enjoyed watching the movie, and I am surprised by the low rating (my ratings are usually 1-2 points under the average). Despite a few issues I will definitely keep my eyes open for this directors next project.
To me OtherLife is a decent movie which amounts to a 6/10 in my rating distribution.

Not a bad film. A bit convoluted. Could have been alot better had the script been more focused. Decent performances. Good production. Hard for us sci fi enthusiasts to get a good fix these days.

This was a rock solid film until the producers ruined it about 3/4 of the way through with a nonsensical ending. Interesting sci fi, believable characters, an awesome plot twist a third of the way through the film, and decent acting. Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised at how good the film was until it went off the rails.
However, the ending was incredibly frustrating because of how unbelievably silly it was, totally destroying all the good work built up over the first part of the film. Sad, sad, sad! It could've been an excellent film!

I love Science Fiction movies and I'm usually willing to put up with mediocre character development, and plot holes, but in this case I was so frustrated that I fast forwarded some parts of the movie. This should have been condensed into an hour long black mirror episode. The cinematography and acting was decent, it was the plot, characters, and pointlessly long scenes that annoyed me. The "twist" wasn't really a twist, it's what you expected to happen throughout the movie. I didn't bond with the characters; the only character I actually had feelings about was Sam and I obviously disliked him. The father was pointless; the lover, Danny, was pointless. The brother was only important to the story, I didn't care about his well being. I'm probably being harder on this film that I normally would, but that's because it had the potential to be awesome...instead.....I'm taking the time to warn you not to waste your time.

Like a chapter of Black Mirror, this is a near-future sci-fi story that has good acting, action, innovative sets, and a great plot. Keeps your brain engaged and entertained. Wish it could have been a mini-series because there are a lot of interesting subplots to explore. If you like this movie and haven't yet seen Black Mirror, please find it and enjoy.
Otherlife, from a novel, Solitaire, by Kelley Eskridge, which was sold and optioned and rejected, is resurrected and made in Western Australia. It looks expensive, professional and could have been a product of Industrial Light and Magic. The graphics, special effects that do not make you think 'cgi' are so realistic that you need to physically hold onto your seat.
It will be billed as Science Fiction, but really it is Speculative Fiction. In an all too near future, with a 'what if' with some mega modern corporation, were to be stolen, or is it? You are wondering just what is happening, unless you pay close, really close attention. The main premise is just too likely to become a reality in my lifetime. There are 3 premises in this 95 minute film.
The other reason this is a must see film is the chance to spot future and rising stars, more Australian stars, we can never have too many in Australia. Also technical expertise (some of them will be Kiwis, for sure) and directors that are better than good. It is also spoken in dinky di Strine. No fake American or British accents. This film comes together smooth perfection. Best film so far in the Sydney film festival, 2 days to go.

It's hard to feel anything for the lead,
because she comes off very unlikable. And liking,
or feeling sympathy for the protagonist is probably
kind of important.
Although there were many beautiful shots, there were
just as many unneeded slow scenes.
I tried to like it.
But I didn't.
Under the influence of latest development of "nearly" Sci-Fi shows (Black Mirror, etc.) this one has an enticing idea and I really wanted to love this film. The thing is, without a developed story line, I kind of lost interest after 3/4 of the film where it was obvious that there was no telling between reality and imagination anymore and that we're up for a twist. which was, in turn, disappointing, as well as the ending which lacked resolution and leaves the viewer puzzled and waiting for more.
The only reason I am writing this is because I actually felt this film has good potential in the first 20 minutes.
However, I like the quote : "As far as your brain is concerned, fantasy and reality are chemically identical."

*A no spoiler review so this will be pointless for anyone looking for confirmation/discussion after watching.*
Overall: Highly recommended.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, having no idea what it was about when I clicked on the icon in Netflix, so was slightly disappointed to find it given such a mediocre score on IMDb.
I will not give away the plot, suffice it to say that you'll have stay on your toes to follow the hints and clues. On a second watch, they are quite cleverly there!
The acting is first rate! The lead role's character and background are sufficiently fleshed out and approachable, and the majority of the science is quite convincing.
Moreover, like much of the best speculative fiction, the premise raises some philosophical and moral questions: In this case, regarding the application of cutting edge technology.
While not entirely original in plot (but then, what film truly is in the 21st century?) the adaptation and implementation makes for a worthy and memorable ride with some visceral and quite disturbing moments, not to mention a spot of exercise for the old noggin.

Not bad, certainly not great but not bad.
I believe given bigger budget and better planning the staff of this movie would create something a lot better.

OtherLife has and interesting premise but no real story. The actors perform decently but the script isn't very good. The plot is underdeveloped and is mediocre at best. The action takes place in a science lab, in which is a man in coma. His sister uses some state of the art unexplained tech to communicate with him - not a new idea. Unfortunately nothing isn't properly explained in this hard Sci-Fi movie and this leads to confusion and boredom. Also this movie is a fairly predictable movie, especially the ending.

If all you give a film is 20 mins you won't get what the film is saying!?
Takes from a fair few previous films, Total Recall, Inception, The Matrix, Minority Report... and as many have said Black Mirror, (not a bad thing) but weaves them well in my humble opinion, it does try to cram a little too much in to the main character while the rest are pretty 2 dimensional (money grabbing partner for 1), and the early abuse of the tech seems to be left behind, or not explained out later?
All being said, a solid movie, I've see worse with better ratings, and you won't mind the 90 odd minutes it takes to watch it.

I think this movie was an interesting taking on reviving someone via neurotechnology from something such as a coma. The characters were phenomenal when it came to acting and conveying emotions and events but I think all characters were very underdeveloped. I even think the plot was underdeveloped. It felt like it scratched the surface of everything occurring throughout the film. The relationships between characters were hard to invest in with less than enough information and depth and making the storyline a bit unconvincing. It wasn't until the movie was nearly complete, did I understand what had happened and what was trying to be achieved to save the brother with the technology and the entire movie is about saving him. Again, the acting was wonderful but the plot was mediocre at best.

When I first saw an announcement for this movie I thought it would be just another sci-fi movie with a decent, but not that original story and a smaller budget. Nevertheless I decided to watch it and then I realized how much mistaken I was. This movie brings one of the more original stories I've seen in sci-fi the last couple of years. Combined with an excellent cinematography and good acting this movie lifts itself up. I know many people who don't like to watch movies with smaller budgets, mostly foreign movies, not produced in Hollywood, but then again, this movie proves you don't need to have the big budgets to get full potential.

I was happy to get much more than I expected. All movie-making aspects are well met! Being one of my favorite subject, I would like to underline the movie subject and it's dystopian context. The movie gives science-driven insight into some negative implications of interdisciplinary technologies-driven Western civilization. Those are slowly becoming part of our everyday reality in the hidden negative way. It's already proved through last century how the new technologies come promising us better life but, as shown in the movie, are eventually misused the other way around by egoistic/selfless corporate-driven entities ending in variety of horror scenarios.
Being a part of this recent and "hungry" subject, explored by likes of P. K. Dick's novels-inspired movies and e.g. Black Mirror series. This piece concentrates on one of many sensitive implications of those forthcoming technologies. In this case combined of molecular biology, genetic pharmacy, various cognitive sciences and computer technologies like VR, "neuro-simulations", bio-3D printing, etc. Ultimately ending with horror scenarios like being imprisoned in ones' own mind; w/o means of escaping or ending it, not in any way.
What if "They" shell really take our freedom, our choice, as it's already happening - slowly, subtly and subliminally? That's I believe why movies like this are important.

Unfortunately Otherlife becomes almost unwatchable at the half way. Going from great sci-fi to incredibly drawn out, almost unwatchable nonsensical TV drama. The characters become almost Comedic in their motivations. Avoid at all cost.

Just a note, this is NOT a television show, it is a stand alone movie. It is a very well done, moderate budget, stand-alone SF film. It does have a very standard SF plot line but it is done so well and with enough originality that it definitely stands up. I was engaged in the story through the entire film, it is shot beautifully, the actors are all good, the set design, productions values, music, editing and script are all very professional and high value. This is NOT some crappy low budget student film.
Definitely worth a watch.

Ok boom, ima start by saying I would of given this 6.5 cos it's not really a 7. Don't get me wrong, it's decent but they could of made the characters more deep. They ain't one dimensional exactly but they're probably 2 dimensional if that makes sense.
It's quiet a grounded movie so when some tings happen in office scenarios you think to yourself "rahh, if that happened at the work place I'd call HR" and it kinda takes you out of it cos it's so bloody clever.
They try to throw this plot twist in which you could probably see coming a mile away but in imo? They coulda hid that ting way better bro
Ok, I know it seems like I'm cussing this film out but don't get me wrong; it still bangs, some interesting ideas and the actors do their ting with what they've been given to work with. It is black mirror vibes for sure but colder if that makes sense? You'll deep what I mean when you see it

Slow but interesting enough to keep me watching until the boring end. If there's nothing else to watch, give it a go but don't expect action or fireworks.
