The Noose. The first scene in Wojciech Has’s filmography belongs to an accordion. The instrument is shown in a contracted state, dangling from the ceiling of an antique shop. Outside the shop, a little boy ogles it through the window; he dreams of playing it. Later in Has’s debut fiction short, Harmonia (1947), he dramatizes that dream. Has’s understanding of cinema as an oneiric canvas is apparent from the very beginning, and his sense that its narratives were meant to trip over themselves through elisions, reversals, and collapses reinforced itself throughout his career. His films are frequently in a state of mutation and his characters always on introspective journeys; objects are the only constant, as their material weight exhibits more solidity than his stories’ whims or his characters’ souls. All the while, Has’s camera acts like an accordion, playing in its own time, starting wide and pushing...

FX’s hit television show Fargo just wrapped up its fifth season. Fargo loosely based on the 1996 movie of the same name first debuted on the network way back in 2014. Each season of the show follows a mostly new cast of characters who get involved with murder investigations in different Midwestern towns. Each crime is somehow connected.
Season five was no different from the past seasons. The fifth season of Fargo follows It stars Juno Temple as Dorothy “Dot” Lyon, a seemingly typical Midwestern housewife living in Scandia, Minnesota, whose mysterious past comes back to haunt her after she lands in hot water with the authorities. Season five also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jon Hamm, Joe Keery, Lamorne Morris, Dave Foley, and Sam Spruell.
The cast and the stories may change throughout the seasons of Fargo, but there has been one person from the beginning that we owe a big thank you to.

Disney’s reputation is notoriously squeaky clean.
The beloved company has provided family-friendly fun for decades, with live-action favorites and animated classics spanning back to the 1930s.
As a powerful force in the industry and one of Hollywood’s biggest studios, the company expanded its reach over the years with film distribution companies, like Touchstone Pictures, Miramax, Searchlight Pictures and Buena Vista Distribution.
The movies often featured more adult themes than one would expect from the company. Because they are published by subsidiaries, the titles are all only indirectly Disney-related – but they still fall under the major studio’s umbrella anyway.

The arc of the cinematic Kelvin timeline of "Star Trek" is curious and, in retrospect, may only be considered a stop-gap in the franchise until it mustered up the money and the legal wherewithal to usher it back to television. The Kelvin-verse, it should be remembered, arrived into a post-9/11 world, and audiences were in no mood for the usual calm, intellectual, pacifism-and-diplomacy-forward tenets of "Star Trek" as it had been. Righteous, vengeful action was more the public's speed in the '00s, hence why superheroes rose to the top of popular culture during that decade. As such, Paramount put out J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" in 2009, updating the franchise to look and feel more like "Star Wars."
Trek 2009 rebooted the franchise's timeline to depict younger, alternate versions of familiar TV characters from 1966. It also upped the battle and destruction quotient by a sizeable factor. The 2009 film was successful enough...

After wayward creative detours with the dreary feature film “Lucy in the Sky” and the over-ambitious fourth season of “Fargo,” Noah Hawley gets back on track with the new season of his FX anthology series.
The latest “Fargo” has all the elements writer-producer-showrunner Hawley knows how to deploy. They may be well-worn tropes at this point: chaos agents, deadpan black comedy, hapless hit men, formidable women, hapless feds, a few good cops, perfectly orchestrated bloodshed beats, hapless wrong kidnap victims, Upper Midwest accents you couldn’t cut with a wood chipper and perhaps a supernatural element or two. But they’ve been craftily reimagined.
New in Season 5 is some ongoing criticism of right-wing extremism — both of the economic Darwinian and Christian patriarchal kind — and other hints that it’s politics as much as people’s inherent stupidity that’s tearing America apart. The implicit message is that those factors are...

For the past 15 years or so, Noah Hawley has called Austin, Texas, home. Sure, he’s spent long stretches elsewhere — Calgary for FX’s Fargo, Bangkok for his forthcoming series Alien — but home, where his wife and two children (ages 16 and 11) reside, is 1,400 miles from Hollywood. And, as Hawley sees it, it’s served him well. “I always say I want to tell stories for everybody, and it helps not to be in a coastal bubble if you want to do that,” he says in early November. “And sure, Austin is its own bubble, but I do like the remove.”

This November, after three full years of waiting, fans of FX’s “Fargo” will be treated to a brand new season. Unlike the anthology series’ fourth iteration, which served as a prequel to its first two, the upcoming fifth batch of episodes will tell an entirely original Midwestern crime story. Leading the season’s star-studded cast is Jon Hamm, who has his sights set on earning his first Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor Golden Globe nomination this winter. Since he was already honored in the corresponding drama series category for “Mad Men” in 2008 and 2016, his possible new victory would make him the seventh man to clinch Golden Globes for performances on both continuing and non-continuing TV programs.
Hamm, who picked up four additional Golden Globe bids for “Mad Men” between 2009 and 2013, has already begun his splashy 2023 return to prestige TV by playing a new supporting role on the third season of “The Morning Show.

Of all of the young actors to break through thanks to the success of "Stranger Things," Sadie Sink has had arguably one of the most interesting career trajectories. Sink got her start on Broadway playing the titular role of "Annie," and had a handful of TV appearances on shows like "The Americans" and "Blue Bloods" before nabbing a main role in "American Odyssey." Unfortunately, that show only lasted one season, canceled by NBC only two days after the season finale. When Sink was cast as Max Mayfield on "Stranger Things" in season 2, she immediately became a fan favorite. Max has become the bleeding heart of the series, and her popularity even prevented show creators, The Duffer Brothers, from killing off the character in season 4 as originally planned.
Following "Stranger Things," Sink has continued to thrive by starring in "Fear Street: 1978," Taylor Swift's short film, "All Too Well," Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale,...

The Beatles‘ “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” has one of the most striking titles in the band’s catalog. Paul revealed what he thought of the name when he first heard it. In addition, he criticized Beatles fans for interpreting the title in a certain way.

In the 1997 book Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now, Paul discussed the origin of The Beatles’ “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” “I went up to John’s house in Weybridge,” he recalled. “When I arrived we were having a cup of tea, and he said, ‘Look at this great drawing Julian’s done. Look at the title!'” For context, Julian was John’s son with his first wife, Cynthia Lennon.

The Beatles‘ Magical Mystery Tour LP contains some of the Fab Four’s most famous songs. In addition, it features an obscure George Harrison composition that’s incredible. Here’s a look at the five best songs from The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour.
The Beatles’ ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ | Michael Ochs Archives / Stringer 5. ‘Blue Jay Way’
The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour contains many famous songs and “Blue Jay Way” is not one of them. It’s one of George’s more obscure compositions. That makes sense, because it certainly doesn’t have a traditional pop hook. Despite this, the song’s chillingly slow tempo hypnotizes the listener.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the real Blue Jay Way is just a street in Los Angeles. Despite this, George makes it sound mysterious and surreal. The fact that he wrote “Blue Jay Way” as well as effective love songs like “Something” and “What...

Don’t say Viola Davis can’t do something, because she’ll continue to prove you wrong. At 56, action star is another notch on the belt of the esteemed actor, who has won a Tony, Emmy and Oscar. Her achievement in Gina Prince-Bythewood’s resounding epic “The Woman King,” along with the sensational ensemble, is among the highlights of the Toronto Film Festival, which premiered the film on Friday night. It feels like the “Gladiator” for Black women, and what a welcome surprise.

For “A Quiet Place Part II,” the sequel to the blockbuster alien invasion film, director John Krasinski emphasizes more action. And, with the passing of his father character at the end of the first film, turns deaf daughter Regan (Millicent Simmonds) into the protagonist. She becomes the film’s canny and determined hero, combatting the aliens with her hearing aid’s high-frequency audio feedback.
Krasinski also tapped a new cinematographer for his sequel: Polly Morgan replaced Charlotte Bruus Christensen, and once again shot on film. “John and I were both passionate about shooting on film,” she said. “But this felt more like a modern western, and, all during prep, we talked about ‘No Country for Old Men,’ ‘True Grit,’ and ‘There Will Be Blood.'”

Natalie Portman and Lupita Nyong’o will headline a limited series adaptation of Laura Lippman’s book “Lady in The Lake” for Apple TV+. To add to the excitement, the entire series will be directed by “Honey Boy” filmmaker Alma Har’el, who wrote the pilot and will co-write the rest of the series with Dre Ryan (“The Man in the High Castle”). “Lady in The Lake” is executive produced by Jean-Marc Vallée, whose “Big Little Lies” and “Sharp Objects” boosted the era of movie stars doing limited series to much acclaim. The series marks the first major TV project for both Oscar-winning actresses.
“Lady in the Lake” is a mystery set in 1960s Baltimore at the height of the civil rights movement. The story follows housewife-turned-reporter Maddie Schwartz (Portman) as she pursues the case of a missing woman named Cleo Sherwood (Nyong’o), whose body was found in a city park lake.

“Mad Men” star Jon Hamm seeks creative fulfillment in more places than the alpha-male, womanizing life of Don Draper. Whether he’s in budget giants like the upcoming “Top Gun: Maverick” or festival titles like “Lucy in the Sky,” he gravitates toward projects he’s passionate about. In the world of television, too, he prioritizes creative alignment over adherence to a consistent personal brand, landing recurring roles in shows like “30 Rock,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” and “Saturday Night Live.” As the distinction between TV and film has grown more and more blurred, Hamm’s versatility has been an important asset.

“Deadpool 2” star Zazie Beetz will join Brad Pitt in the cast of Sony’s action movie “Bullet Train.”
Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry and Andrew Koji are also boarding the pic. “Hobbs & Shaw” helmer David Leitch is directing with Kelly McCormick producing through 87North and Antoine Fuqua through Fuqua Films. Zak Olkewicz wrote the script, based on the Japanese novel “Maria Beetle” by best-selling author Kotaro Isaka. The book centers on a group of hitmen and assassins with conflicting motives on a train in Tokyo.
Pitt boarded the project in early July. He had been weighing his options since winning his first acting Oscar for Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” for playing stuntman Cliff Booth. Pitt is also attached to co-star with Emma Stone in Damien Chazelle’s movie “Babylon,” which moved back the start of production to 2021, creating an opening in his schedule for “Bullet Train.

Dan Stevens will be taking on not one, but two royal parts for HBO Max’s animated British Royal Family comedy, “The Prince,” voicing both Prince Charles and his father, Prince Philip.
Based on Gary Janetti’s popular parody Prince George Instagram account, “The Prince’ is a biting, satirical look at the life of Prince George of Cambridge, the youngest heir to the British throne, as he navigates the trials and tribulations of being a royal child,” per HBO Max.
“Before George rules Britannia, he’ll be laying down his own laws in Gary Janetti’s comedic take on the future King of England’s childhood as seen from the prince’s own point of view. Because his succession isn’t coming any time soon, in each episode George will find his path in life as a young prince in modern times – from the 775 rooms of Buckingham Palace to his...

A batch of early Christmas presents will arrive on Sky Cinema in November! Time to look ahead at which movies are on the way…
Premieres
Ash is Purest White (2018) – 4th November
Cannes favourite Ash Is Purest White is a Chinese drama from Jia Zhangke, and the story is based on the leader of a gang from Zhangke’s childhood who he looked up to. It’s still holding steady at 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, so we can confidently say it’s a winner.
Doctor Sleep (2019) – 6th November on Sky Cinema and the Sky Cinema Pass on Now TV
A Shining sequel? Hm, could that ever really be any good? Ah, but wait, a Shining sequel from Haunting of Hill House’s Mike Flanagan based on an actual Stephen King book? We can confirm: it’s certainly a lot better than we thought it might be. In Doctor Sleep, little Danny Torrance has gotten old.

Fall 2019 had at least two female-led astronaut films hitting the fall film festival circuit at the same time. Noah Hawley‘s “Lucy In The Sky,” starring Natalie Portman, crashed down to earth in a blaze of negative reviews. Still, the slightly-lesser-known films, Alice Winocour’s intimate drama, “Proxima” was way better received and won the Blur vs. Oasis battle of female lead astronaut clashes of fall 2019.

Noah Hawley is one of the most interesting and respected filmmakers working today. Sure, he didn’t have the best of luck with his debut feature, “Lucy in the Sky,” but his work on TV is pretty much second-to-none, as “Fargo” continues to impress. But that doesn’t mean he just is able to get every project he wants greenlit by studios. In fact, as discussed in a new Observer interview, he had a pitch for “Alien” that isn’t likely going to get made, as it will join the ranks of his unproduced “Star Trek” feature.

When you’re ready to make your feature film directorial debut, you couldn’t have been set up for success better than Noah Hawley and his “Lucy in the Sky.” Not only did he have the backing of Searchlight Pictures, but he also had a cast that included Natalie Portman, Jon Hamm, Zazie Beetz, and Dan Stevens. But even with the great cast, the studio backing, and the buzz from his award-winning success with “Fargo,” “Lucy in the Sky” was a huge disappointment, both creatively and financially.

Soon after season 3 of FX’s Fargo ended, Noah Hawley made it sound like the Emmy-winning series was done and over at the Atx festival. Those were comments that he quickly walked back, and here we are with a Chris Rock-starring season 4 set to air on Sept. 27 across 11 episodes.
And as far as season 5 goes, Hawley told us at FX’s press day today, “I’m certainly not ruling it out.”
“It’s not just one idea you need, it’s a hundred ideas and characters,” added the creator, but providing no teaser on what’s next, “so that tends to percolate.”
Also, in regard to what’s next for Hawley, his answer is the same as it was at TCA earlier this year: “I have a novel, I’m trying to finish, it’s not my goal to race back into production.”
“I’ve been going and going for a long time now.

Amazon Unveils Footage of Stacey Abrams Documentary
Amazon Studios has released a powerful trailer for the Stacey Abrams voting rights documentary “All In: The Fight for Democracy,” less than three months before the Nov. 3 election.
“If the power of the right to vote was truly made available to everyone in America, it would change the future of this nation,” Abrams asserts in the three-minute promotional clip, released Monday.
The film will be released in theaters on Sept. 9 and on Amazon Prime Video on Sept. 18. Abrams ran as the Democratic Party’s nominee in the 2018 gubernatorial election in Georgia and was the first Black woman to be a major-party gubernatorial nominee in the United States. She narrowly lost to Republican Brian Kemp, who was accused by Abrams of voter suppression activities after he refused to resign as secretary of state while campaigning for governor.

Comedian Tig Notaro is replacing Chris D’Elia in Zack Snyder’s zombie movie “Army of the Dead,” Variety has confirmed.

Paramount Pictures has decided to pause on making another “Star Trek” movie, nine months after hiring “Fargo” and “Legion” creator Noah Hawley to write and direct the next installment of franchise.
The decision comes five weeks after the studio named former 20th Century Fox film executive Emma Watts to be president of the Paramount Motion Picture Group. Paramount had no comment. Sources indicated that Watts has put the brakes on the Hawley project in order to get more clarity on how to handle the next “Star Trek” movie, but added that the project has not been ditched.

Exclusive: Looks like Paramount’s plan to next make the Star Trek movie that Noah Hawley wrote and plans to direct has been put on pause for a moment. New film chief Emma Watts, who managed many a franchise at Fox, is in the process of figuring out which way to go.
The pause on the Hawley project, which had been in soft prep, prompted rumors this week that the filmmaker might exit, but that has not happened yet, sources said. The other two possibilities are the one that The Revenant’s Mark L. Smith wrote for Quentin Tarantino to direct (Deadline broke that one late 2017), and another that was going to bring back the original...

Back in October a smallish film called “Lucy in the Sky,” starring Natalie Portman as a post-mission astronaut struggling to accept the limitations of life on earth, opened and closed in short order. It was neither as bad as its dismal reviews and mortifying box office would have you believe, nor as good as you’d hope for from any of the talent involved. Most of all, however, it felt outplayed the moment it appeared, premiering as it did in Toronto alongside “Proxima.” An unostentatious but quietly dazzling meditation on womanhood in the largely patriarchal space race, Alice Winocour’s highly satisfying third feature outdoes many more lavish Hollywood efforts in evoking the otherworldly emotional disconnect that comes with space travel, all without leaving terra firma for the vast bulk of its running time.

Jon Hamm is set to make a new advertising pitch, one that will see him taking on the deadpan, stumble-bumming 1980s-era comedy mantle of Chevy Chase with a reboot of Fletch.
Miramax has announced its development of a new Fletch movie, which will see star Hamm co-produce with the studio. The film will be a reboot of the franchise launched by 1985 hit detective comedy Fletch and continued with 1989’s Fletch Lives, which starred Chevy Chase as Irwin “Fletch” Fletcher, an eccentric-but-tenacious L.A. Times reporter who gets scoops the dangerous way while donning an absurd variety of disguises. Like the 1985 hit, the reboot will be a loosely-comedic adaptation of author Gregory McDonald’s 1974-launched series of Fletch detective novels.
As Miramax CEO Bill Block expresses in a statement:
“Fletch’s duration over audiences — whether told on paper or the big screen — entertains all and we could not be more thrilled...
