Very funny!
unixfreaxjp16 May 2016
This is the good comedy, the story was originated from comic (in Japanese: Manga) and even with the limited budget the director had a good work in presenting the story and characters very well.

The story is about the clumsiness of teenagers to express their feeling to each other, which were cleverly cooked as this story in the good ways. The Gouda (Takeo) character was created as a good pair to his childhood buddy Sunakawa (Suna/Makoto); where Takeo is a strong, kind & unselfish, and Suna is handsome, cool & attractive and girls at their age are all around after Suna for attention. The complexity of the story began when Yamato (Rinko) came and blended to these two best friend. Where these three characters are be very careful not hurt others, and brings plenty of situational comedy.

The movie itself is nice, its situation, characters are well-set, as per Manga. If they have more budget I bet the movie can be made better. The story is originally made although we may see similar theme in plenty of movies, the way that the author expressing the character's thought and emotion is the key of this film.

I am not so sure about the English translation used since I watched it by listening to the Japanese dialogue, but the way I see it was well explaining the conversation well.

If you want to watch something nice, funny and close to Japanese culture this movie will give some vision. I watched this with friends and family and we all laugh so much. It really makes my day, look forward to watch something like this.

You must see this, specially the latest part after the end-roll :)

An extra large size love and food story.
Reno-Rangan14 June 2016
It is an excitement to explore the world films, but I'm always happy to end up in a Japanese film, because it is one of the language, people and culture I adore a lot. Followed by a success of the television anime series, this live-action film was made in which both were based on a manga series of the same name. Other than that there's no connection between the film and the series.

A good manga book can make a perfect anime film or a series, because they both share a similar visual illustration. Surprisingly, this film managed to narrate as good as the anime does and this is not the first time to achieve such treat, but surely it is one of those to successfully transform a manga into a live-action.

The main character Takeo Goda was just like the Shrek. Like bigger, taller, stronger and scarier as well, but inside, he's a tender hearted, except this story does not take place in a world where magic exists. When I heard about the film and its storyline, I was praying for not to be another 'Big Man Japan' or like the Hulk kind of physical transformation. I'm relieved after watching it, and ended up liking it more than what my initial anticipation was. It looks more a fictional creation, but this thing happens in the real world as well, except those comical characters.

An unusual high school love story, but it all begins with two think friends. One is a very fine looking boy adored by all the girls in the school and the other one is not so good looking Takeo who steps in if anybody is in a trouble and takes no credits for it. In a such event while rescuing a girl over eve teasing incident, he finds the victim very beautiful. Later they three becomes very close and over their daily meeting, Takeo begins to fall for her despite his friend and her making progress. So the rest of the film reveals all the development between them and concluding the narration with a cute little clichéd twist.

"A person's heart... Why can't we move it the way we want to? Even though it's our own heart... It doesn't listen to what I say! I wonder if it's because I'm stupid?"

Feels like a typical Japanese comedy with a unique idea, but the scenes were better if not makes it you go for a loud laugh. I confess that I did not laugh much, but surely I enjoyed every bit of it. That's the difference between having a good time, laughing and depressed over a film. It is a food film as well, but I did not realise until the final act.

I recently saw the first season of the Amazon's 'Just Add Magic' which is about the recipes for making a food that delivers wish (magic) and this film as well without magic in it tells how to impress the one you love and them to fall for you. It is not just a comedy, it was also a cute and sentimental romance, that specially aimed for the teen audience.

It was a good balance in the theme and its contents. Because of having a physically strong character, the film did not go for a full exposure. Either be it the karate championship or the amusement part disaster scenes, it evolved smartly with obviously a comical relief. Feels silly for the film characters not to disclose their feelings to each other. But it helped a simple love story to be a complicated love triangle. The actors were very cool, especially the one in the Takeo's role and then the girl with her heartbroken expression throughout the film.

There was a post credit scene, a funny way to finish it off. Now I'm thinking whether there will be a sequel or not. Because with a concept like this, definitely would come close to the original if that does not overtake it. It was not a very clever as you would have wanted, but a good entertainer as it promised in its trailer. I don't know the domestic release film rating, but I think it is somewhat PG, so it can be enjoyed by all despite a high school centric theme. I recommend it to everybody, though, remember some of you won't go to love it as much as I did, that does not mean I'm wrong, but we're different. Overall, it is definitely worth a watch and I won't deny that.

Very good anime to real Iife Japanese romance movie!
Irishchatter9 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't bother seeing the anime because I'm sure it's equally as good as this! I liked how they made a guy character like Gouda Takeo to be different in a way that you don't normally expect in romantic films! Hes this big guy who just wants to find love with Yamato. I even like how he has this unattractive raspy voice and damn, he deserves credit in saving that little boy from drowning lol!

Btw I didn't realize the actor who plays Gouda, is very attractive like you wouldn't expect someone from the likes of him to play an 'unattractive' guy. The actress who played Yamato was great as well, she literally is so cute playing as a schoolgirl in Japan. I definately would recommend this to anyone regardless if they love anime or not, you'd definately get a few laughs out of it! 8/10

Different Expectations
forbesplaid21 May 2016
I haven't read the manga. I've only watched the anime. My review is based on a comparison of the film to the anime.

I enjoyed the anime adaptation very much, so I was eager to see the live action film. The production was well cast and the actors portrayed their roles very well. The screenplay, however, was a disappointment.

I anticipated some differences between the movie and the animation. I was unprepared for how different it would be. It isn't a case of the anime brought to life, it's something else. The movie felt rushed to attempt to include most of the story in one feature film. Many scenes from the TV series were rewritten, combined or omitted completely. Plot elements that supported transitioning between scenes were missing. It felt like I was watching a series of clips with no connection from one scene to the next. A lot of character development and background was left out. It gave me a feeling of being profoundly incomplete. A feature film series may have served this story in a better manner.

It isn't the anime. It's quite different. The film is entertaining and worth watching.

A very unique Japanese romantic comedy...
paul_haakonsen8 May 2017
I can't claim to be familiar with the anime or manga that this movie is based upon, but I still decided to sit down to watch "My Love Story!!" (aka "Ore Monogatari!!") given my love and admiration for the Japanese cinema.

And it turned out that "My Love Story!!" actually was quite a nice surprise of a movie, and it was definitely more entertaining that I had hoped for. I had no prior knowledge about the movie or the storyline as I sat down to watch this movie.

The story is about Takeo (played by Ryôhei Suzuki) who hangs out with his suave best friend Sunakawa (played by Kentarô Sakaguchi). All the girls love and adore Sunakawa, so when Takeo one day saves Yamato (played by Mei Nagano) from a bully, he finds himself at the center of attention of a girl's admiration. And this is something that he is not accustomed to.

There are so many hilarious situations in the movie, and you will definitely be brought to laughter throughout the course of "My Love Story!!" And the wonderfully light-hearted, funny and romantic storyline is easy to follow and actually takes a firm grip on you as it leads you through the ups and downs of the storyline. Most of the interaction between Takeo and Yamato had me laughing, and it was very enjoyable to watch.

The acting in "My Love Story!!" was quite good, and it was nice to see some fresh, new faces on the cast list. Especially since they performed quite well individually and together on the screen.

The characters in the movie were equally charismatic and unique as the actual storyline was, so that was a definite plus, because these quirky characters fit right into the storyline.

I was more than genuinely entertained by "My Love Story!!" and if you are a fan of Japanese cinema and enjoy a good, wholesome romantic comedy, then you definitely should take the time to sit down and watch "My Love Story!!" if you get the chance.

the best shojo manga adaptation for me!!!
fluffset15 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
My review may sound a little bit bias, because I love this story so much. I've done its manga & anime and if this movie is messed up like all the previous shojo adaptation I'd watched, I will know it already but, I like it, I love it so much!

My review is suit for those who have read the manga and also have watch the anime. I cant position myself as a man who know nothing about its original source but I guess they will still like it. One thing that I gonna say is this movie is live up to my expectation!

As I said a lot of time before in my previous review about shojo manga adaptation for a lot of similar-theme movie is the plot line. Shojo manga always have 10++ volume of manga that have a lot of plot & sub- plot and it will be quite difficult for the writer to mix it all up in a limited movie duration that maybe can go as far as 2 hour of long. The big example is "Kimi Ni Todoke" which I think is too messed up and disordered. "Ore Monogatari" totally solve this main problem! How? Its easy, they just reconstruct the storyline by simplify it a bit without change the feel of the story. Take all the big moment in the manga & place it properly one by one in the story. For example, in the manga & anime, the introduction scene of Rinko who got harassed in the train is replaced with the street harassment where the culprit only run away without any hassle to go to the police station that will surely need more time to play in the movie. And so everything after that.

So, I can say that this movie works for me. I really like it, its so funny and heartwarming, maybe because I already know the whole story, I just really love to see how they dramatize the whole manga in this movie. Especially the kissing scene, it makes me burst out laughing. Only one thing disappointing me, the running scene. Looks like they cant get away from this stereotype. But its OK, its like a signature scene in many shojo movie, where the character will run to his/her love to declare their love. Overall, if you like the manga/anime, you will totally enjoy this movie! If not, you will still have the chance to love it! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Good light entertainment
Hombredelfuturo26 January 2017
...in first instance I was thinking to not watch this movie; you know, most of these ones are for teenagers or like that but in this case is worth the time spent it. -Its about friendship with strong values. Also, the storyline is wrong about this guy that cannot meet a gal because he is not handsome; in fact in the movie most do not have girlfriends or luck with the girls; only one is the "fortunate" (the same stupidity in some teenager girls to pop/movie idols) and this guy is very appreciated in the high school, so not an unpopular character but may be not so polished in his manners (a la Samurai way)

He is a good heart fella and always is trying to help no matter the circumstances. He put the best face to adverse conditions keeping the true good spirit high (this is something important in Japan)

The guy is a bit naif and lack of confidence so from the start he thought that all the story revolves around his partner, the handsome/cool guy; that by the way is a great guy too.

-The acting is a bit over acted and of course the movie has plenty of the clichés of the genre but still is good to watch; have less sugar than a Hollywood movie and a fresh approach so is more a 6 than a 5 (a good movie)

Good enough
PennyReviews30 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I've got mixed feeling about this one. Though it wasn't a bad movie, it seemed like it lucked of something. Okay, first things first: the movie had a comedy element that was excellent, though it was too "manga" like, but in the end it worked. The love story was okay and cute as well. The performances were great and the casting was perfect for their characters, especially the leading man. Now, the whole thing was well executed, however, it kind of felt like it was dragging on and on and the second half onward was bleak and slightly boring. Maybe that's because the love story lucked some intensity. So, overall, 5 out of 10.
