A smooth and romantic ballad about childhood
nhpenter6 October 2015
Victor Vu is one of the best directors in Viet Nam, and he gave us an awesome film which based on Nguyen Nhat Anh's "I see yellow flowers on the green grass" Entire of the film is a story about Thieu and his little brother - Tuong. Everything run slowly, smoothly with many beautiful pictures in Phu Yen province's countryside. The background of the film is in 1989, viewers can have a overview about Viet Nam at that time: poor, destitute but truly full of love. Following 2 little boys's story, viewers will seem to be come back to their childhood with traditional games, works and even the change in thought of Thieu - teenage boy. It is very pure, sincere but selfish. I bet that all people always want to keep in mind all of their memories about that. From my point of view, the bigger drama, the more completion. Let's enjoy the movie and recall your childhood!

A beautiful poem

A movie that asks you to be both patient and naïve (in a childish manner, so to speak).

Failing upon those, it might come as tedious and cheesy.

If both are embraced, it all feels like a beautiful poem on love and all other encompassing emotions.

a lightly romantic movie for teenager

It is not for people, who love action movie. The movie is really slow and try to express the change in teenager's emotion for their first love. In addition, the movie express the strong bond between brothers in family.

A ticket to childhood
gnguyen1026 October 2015
Most significant cinematography masterpiece from Victor Vu yet.

The movie is set in 1980's rural area of Vietnam and the story follows 12-year old Thieu, his 7-year old brother Tuong and Thieu's childhood crush Moon. The brothers do everything together, play in rice paddies, running errands, sleep on same bed...their days are filled with curious adventures. Then one day Moon comes into the picture and incites Thieu's insecurities and jealousy towards his brother Tuong who, by hid nature, is trusting and full of innocence. Even when Thieu inflicts physical harm to Tuong, the younger brother continues to idolize Thieu and constantly seeks his approval.

One could easily pick up that the movie is a string of small episodes involving the lives of these three characters in rural area where resources are scarce and that the welfare sometimes depends on the sacrifices made.

This movie will strangely cleanse your inner humanity

I just watched this movie. Such a great movie! Safe to say one of the best I've ever watched. It was so... authentic!

Personally, as a Vietnamese American, I admit I will be a little biased in reviewing this movie. At the same time, I don't usually write review so this review wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for this movie.

I love every single main character, namely Moon and the two brothers. Their relationship with the viewers and with each other develops very nicely throughout the movie. It was simple and genuine yet also very complex and emotional.

The images, the angles, the music, the CGI, basically all the artistic elements of this movie worked very well! Beautiful sceneries mixed in with authentic crises are what made this movie so mesmerizing. I was so glad I was able to watch the movie. Vietnamese film has definitely come a long way.

A beautiful memory

"Yellow flowers on the green grass" is a 2015 Vietnamese drama, which was directed by Victor Vu. It is adapted from the novel of the same name by Nguyen Nhat Anh. The film stars Thinh Vinh and Trong Khang. Although there aren't any famous actors, the film attracted a large audience.

The film is about the childhood of the brothers Thieu (Thinh Vinh) and Tuong (Trong Khang) in a poor rural village in central Vietnam in the 1980s. They share and do everything together. However, when their friend next door Man (Thanh My), comes to stay with them and a big flood hits their village, there is a big misunderstanding that leads to Tuong's back injury. The film has an open ending with the scene of Thieu and Tuong studying in their house.

The film received many positive reviews from critics for its touching story, beautiful and familiar scenery of the country in Vietnam, and the especially impressive acting of three main actors.

The film touches audiences' hearts because it is about a story of childhood but it is not childish nor for only children; it's for adults who used to be children. It makes them cry and laugh together when they remember their own childhood, hometown and family. The film is well worth watching.

Not really understand the story much
nguyenhan-6925316 July 2021
The view, the picture, the music is very good. It makes me remember a lot when I was a kid, the horror stories that our grandma usually told us. It's so familiar. But the reason I point it 6/10 is because of the story, I mean it hard for me to follow the story, I think it is a little bit too fast.
