Particular
gianmarcoronconi22 May 2023
This film is particular in itself because it has a not too imaginative plot but thanks to the characters and the development of this trivial plot the film becomes really nice. Let's start from the biggest flaw though, the acting isn't that great and the actors don't show much of the emotions well, but this huge flaw is compensated by the general atmosphere and the only noteworthy character with a very nice personal story and with a narrative arc that surpasses all the others in depth, in my opinion it can be said that he is actually the real protagonist and in conclusion I must therefore say that without this particular character the film would almost all be thrown away.

This is not a bad movie at all. No one is actually a hero while many of the characters are... Let's say... They may have some personality flaws or they are very unconventional and polemic to say the least. When it comes down to horror, I believe things should be a little dark and unsettling. Plus, I did not begin to watch this to see a hero or some tough teenage girl saving the day. Although we know girls tend to save the day in the horror genre. But getting back to the movie, there are some side stories that sometimes made me feel a little tired. The point I should highlight, or better, confess, is that I saw myself laughing once or twice here. Maybe it is the booze, maybe is dementia or even the lust.

What's love got to do with it?
kosmasp10 December 2022
No pun intended - you can ask that for many movies I reckon. And it is a valid question here too. You have a one location movie, but at least you have an outside and inside scenario going on. So there is a lot of variation going on ... and quite a few colorful characters. Your moral compass may lead you to have some issues with certain things ... just suspend your disbelief and go with the flow.

This is a slow burner and you can somewhat claim or put the Western label on it. But maybe not in the way some of you think. Again, you have to let the movie move at its own pace ... let things build up ... before all goes ... well there is some mayhem towards the end. Predictable to a degree ... but also fun to watch. Well fun, because we know it is a movie. Not so much fun for those involved ... and decisions have to be made ... status quo or risking once own life to do or go a different path? Not easy to answer ... and a "not answer" sometimes is also an answer. Some graphic violence and some sexual situations ... in case that means anything for or to you.

Kept me interested
jordondave-280853 February 2023
(In Denmark with English subtitles)

I saw this movie as "Primal" and not as "Well" with a mother dropping off her son to a remote gas station in the middle of a desert. We find out later that the teenage young man, Laci (Péter Jankovics) happens to be the son the father, István (Zsolt Kovács) has not seen in over 30 years and he also happens to be the owner of the gas station. István does not run the station himself, he also has a handicap., Zoli (Roland Tzafetás) who keeps him company at the same time. And it was during this time, just as both the father and the son become more acquainted a van stops by. And in that van are 2 handlers escorting 4 different women on their way to Switzerland. And the person who appear to be in charge of this group his name is Zsolti/ Zsolt (Csaba Horváth) who's waiting for a package István claims have not yet arrived despite his phone says otherwise. Motivating Zsolt to continue to hang around with that time Laci making a connection with one of the 4 escorts, Marcsi (Niké Kurta) leading to unpredictable results.

The jury's still out on this one
bowmanblue10 October 2023
The credits have finally rolled and I can't make my mind up about whether I liked 'Well' or not. I must confess that I have been getting more than a little tired about the 'formula' where hero gets powers and saves the world after defeating a villain with similar superpowers.

Lately, I've been crying out for a story have isn't a remake of something - meaning I know where it's going to go because I read the comic back in the nineties. And this is it. I didn't know what to expect and the fact that it was in among the 'horror' films, I thought there might even be an evil beastie hunting the protagnonists, but the story featured nothing like that.

It's about a mother who drops her deadbeat adult son off at his father's gas station in the middle of Eastern Europe, The son hasn't seen his dad since he was little and he gets hardly any time to get to know him because gangsters and prostitutes soon gate crash and demand him hand over something he'd clearly stolen from them.

So there's plenty of tension between the various parties, as the van the thugs arrive in breaks down there and they have to stay at the gas station for a few nights.

Ultimately, what you have here is the simple definition of a 'slow burn,' Boy, is it slow. Not to say that things are always hard to see, or even that nothing happens. People come and go and as the scenes go by we do get a better idea as to what our characters are all about. But you may be crying out for some sort of action. I hate to disappoint, but you don't get any. There are no stylised action scenes, hordes of computer-generated monsters or high octane car chases in sports cars. There's a bit of gun play near the end if you've stuck it out that long, but that's about all you'll get.

The violence and decisions the characters make are actually quite toned down and sensible. No one tales a hundred punches and keeps fighting. Once someone is hurt, they're hurt and better pray no one goes for them white they're weak.

If you're looking for anything vaguely fast-paced, or the snappy banter of a Guy Ritchie/Tarrantino movie then you won't find what you're looking for here. But if you're ready for something a lot more slow paced and just a little more thoughtful, this could be worth a watch.

Why?
minutti-928676 June 2023
Saw this movie as a "horror film" and I truly don't think it is in the category. I found it under the name "savage" and goodness I can't see any relation. I don't even think it could be consider a thriller.

Absolutely slow and uneventful, bland boring characters, story boring and slow, not even the camera and color grading are good.

The other reviews here that worship the movie really blew my mind, truly can't relate to any of those comments. I wonder if there's only 10 people rating this cause I truly don't get the score given to this.

Wouldn't watch again even if they paid me.

Not recommended.

Stunning!! Loved it.
paulclaassen18 June 2018
Who would have thought a film set entirely at a gas station could be this engaging? This was absolutely brilliantly done! Wow, it was portrayed so well how quickly a normal situation can turn for the worse. Roland Tzafetas is excellent as Zoli, who tells the story of a dog, as a back story. His story spans the entire film and was just as interesting as the premise itself. Things suddenly and quickly go sour, with great acting and effects, and rather suspenseful at that! The film's final moment was so awesome!!

Awful.
Fanzinho27 February 2018
Sometimes you should really NOT trust IMDB's ratings...

This movie is simply one of the most boring ones that I've ever seen.

A bunch of annoying characters are stuck at a gas station and the whole time all you see is them talking non-sense stuff. Nothing really happens and the end is the worst ever.

Now I know that the voters are for sure part of the crew and their friends. It is simply impossible that such a horrendous plot and cast deverve such a high rating.

Simply awful.

Awesome movie
jeddylajos31 December 2017
If you don't have the budget of Hollywood movies, but you have a good idea how to make a true film, odds are on your side, as the story, script, acting, and alike which you can't buy with money (in a broad sense) are always more important, than the overpowering visual effects, and the faces of the current movie stars. Kút (Well) has to offer much: decent story, which keeps some suspense all the way to the end and shackles you to your chair; fair and good acting. You'll try to anticipate the events and think with the characters' head, altough most things will probably take a different route. Contains some nasty visual things, some of which I didn't liked, or I would have changed, altough nothing on the scale of gib/gore movies have, I think it's managable for nearly everyone. It'll be a good experience, if you decide to give it a watch, I recommend it.

Slow moving is an understatement
okpilak31 December 2022
This would have been a better movie if it had not been dubbed, but had only used subtitles. Too much of a mismatch with the dialogue. And there is a lot of dialogue. The gas station seems to be an abandoned relic in the middle of nowhere, but it really wasn't that. But what was going on wasn't apparent either. There is a cripple that perhaps has the most interesting role, and he is a story teller. A lot of it seems aimless and disconnected, yet there is a sinister suggestion. One gathered there was a criminal connection, but it must be more than the transport of prostitutes. They are stranded there, and there is a lot of aimless things going on which can be quite boring. It will keep ones interest if one stays awake, which is perhaps the best I can describe without ruining the movie.

Like a Hungarian Western
lauraeva-2755627 November 2022
A gas station in the middle of nowhere, Hungarian puszta, Australian outback, American prairie.

Sleepy and nothing much happens till a broke down camper arrives with fleeing prostitutes on their way to the West.

All so lazy until the bad men arrive and then it becomes escalating mayhem ...

Indeed the violence escalates to Tarantino levels, but always with a deft touch of comedy.

It was a really enjoyable experience, with good cinematography and direction.

Was it derivative, of course. Remenicent of early John Carpenter movies.

Watched at the time in smallest movie house in Budapest, but I bought it this Summer on DVD and will re-watch soon !

Incredibly dull road movie
barton-company4 September 2023
A slow slow burner, so very very slow, to the pint of watching paint dry. The setting is a dusty backwater with little or no traffic passing through except a potentially interacting cargo that rocks up a little way in. The dialogue is a dirge and in its defence maybe doesn't translate too well... from what I could grab of the dialogue, Hungarian women's voices are excessively deep, no worries but kind of adds to the atmosphere.

There's a tail-less cat that appears from time to time among the plastic white chairs in the forecourt and even on a chair, that appears to possess an acre more substance than the rest of this film.

I stopped it half way though to see if I'd missed anything but I hadn't, it really was that unmemorable.

I belive the point might be that the people involved in the gathering at the gas station in the middle of what ought to be that vast dull outback of the Hortobagy (Hungarys wheat plains) don't really have all that much to say or do, being such empty characters, that they go mental on each other which is what I would have done if I'd been in their company.

About 2/3 of the way through, it sparks into life in brutal fashion. There's nothing new about any of it, apart from a saucy scene in a woodshed. The scenery and kino side are suitably atmospheric, in a true romance kind of way.

Quote of the movie has to be, and it exactly reflects my choice of movie... "I'm too old for this ****'+".

Good thriller set at petrol station
Phil_M_A_Kerr30 December 2022
Didn't know it was in Hungarian.

Didn't unfold the way I expected it to which kept me interested.

Oddball characters played really well by the handsome cast.

Starts off very quiet and slow but eventually gets nasty and brutal.

Balancing the brutality is, of all things, a sweet romance.

If you need a break from blockbusters and happily-ever-afters this could be for you.

For anyone that cares this was shot on "old school" 35mm film and it looks better for it.

Recognised the actress who plays Marsci but I can't recall the names of other stuff she's done.

Commendable example of the one location thriller genre.

It was awesome
adamjani-113 December 2018
I liked the characters, the slow storytelling. If you want to see a fast pacing action movie it is not your title but it has some western like crime/drama tone I enjoyed till the end.

I rated it to nine which is unrealistic but I really enjoyed this movie more than other 7ish or some 8ish movies. This can be because I am hungarian too, but I still think it is worth to watch.

Unpredictable
danielstricker2 February 2023
I loved the movie for the actors, the mood and the storyline. Unpredictable in every way you can imagine. All the characters seem lost and lonely and happiness is found at places you don't expect. (I would love to explain more but that would mean to spoil the movie.)

If you love indie chic, you will love it. It's a sort of stationary road movie that surprises with its twists and turns. Sometimes a bit slow but this helps to set the mood that made this movie special, too.

I loved the actors - and actresses. The men are mostly gross but women are beautiful to look at - and fall in love with.

Oh, great writing and directing, too.

Above my expectations
sdenhaag9 May 2023
Like some other reviewer mentionned it: it is a Panonian Western: slow, with well designed typical characters that contain just that extra depth, inner sadness and fatality. The right amount of killings.

All more or less accidental but they changed the life of everybody for ever. All rough but contemplative/ melancholic but not a tear jurker (at all). Interesting plot. The atmosphere is loaded all the time, with missed destinies, regrets, harsh lives. It doesn't take parts. Life goes as it goes. And in spite of everything people hang on it.

Very good acting. The final is quite satisfying. This is a real movie, not just entertainment.

Sorry but I was bored...
searchanddestroy-111 November 2022
I am ashamed to have missed the opportunity to understand the message of this film, very interesting, and not surprising from Eastern Europe; in France, such films may be released in movie theaters from time to time. But they are not destined to wide audiences. Good character study, but I could not find where it leads to, there is a message, but which one.... That's the key to enter this movie, the code to log in. I have not found it. And as in a Q T movie: HARDFUL EIGHT, ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, there is talk, talk, talk, talk, talk - especially here where the action takes place in nearly only one place, a gas station - you can clean your entire apartment whilst watching it, and SUDDENLY there is a violence, sadism surge, a bloody spree, so unpredictable.... It is a worth watching film, not a crap anyway. No folks!!! No garbage, but hard to deeply follow. That's all.

A story well told
martinrande28 August 2023
If you're going into this film expecting the usual low budget slasher type affair, then you'll be pleasantly surprised by the quality of this offering. The acting is excellent, the story won't be what you are expecting, as I'm guessing like me you'll be waiting for someone to suddenly go pyscho. However, this film goes much deeper into the human psyche, the characters thanks to the quality of the script, which at times is almost poetic sets this apart from 90% of similarly plotted films. I would highly recommend watching this film, you won't regret it, the ending is also nicely done. I would have loved to watch this without the dubbing, although even with voices that you know don't fit the actors, it's still a great watch.

A Dark and Gritty Masterpiece of Action-Adventure Drama
Primal (original title: Kút) is a 2016 Hungarian action-adventure drama film directed by Attila Gigor. The film is set in a remote gas station in the middle of nowhere, where a young man named Laci (Péter Jankovics) arrives to meet his long-lost father Mihály (Ferenc Pusztai). On the same day, a van carrying four prostitutes and their handlers breaks down at the same gas station. The prostitutes are on their way to Switzerland for a better life, but they soon realize that they have fallen into a deadly trap. The film follows the events that unfold in the next three days as Laci tries to reconnect with his father while also dealing with the violent and unpredictable gang.

Primal is a masterpiece of action-adventure drama that deserves a 5-star rating for its excellent direction, acting, cinematography, sound, and story. The film is a dark and gritty exploration of themes such as revenge, family, survival, and morality. The film has a minimalist style that relies on natural lighting, long takes, and sparse dialogue. The cinematography creates a sense of isolation and tension as the characters are trapped in a desolate landscape with no escape. The sound design also adds to the atmosphere of danger and suspense as gunshots, explosions, and screams echo throughout the gas station.

The acting is superb as the actors deliver realistic and nuanced performances. Jankovics portrays Laci as a naive and innocent young man who is caught in a web of lies and violence. He shows his vulnerability and confusion as he tries to understand his father's motives and actions. Pusztai plays Mihály as a complex and conflicted father who has a dark past and a hidden agenda. He reveals his guilt and remorse as he tries to protect his son from harm. The four actresses who play the prostitutes also give convincing and sympathetic performances as they show their hopes, fears, and struggles. They display their courage and resilience as they fight for their freedom and dignity.

The story is engaging and unpredictable as it keeps the audience guessing what will happen next. The film has a nonlinear structure that uses flashbacks and flash-forwards to reveal more information about the characters and their motivations. The film also has some surprising twists and turns that challenge the expectations of the audience. The film does not shy away from showing the brutality and cruelty of human nature as it depicts graphic scenes of violence and torture.

The film has a strong message about the consequences of revenge and the importance of forgiveness. The film shows how revenge can consume people's lives and lead to more suffering and destruction. The film also shows how forgiveness can heal wounds and restore relationships. The film uses symbols such as water to represent life and fire to represent death.

Primal is one of the best Hungarian films I have seen and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes films that are original, creative, and challenging. Primal is not for the faint-hearted as it contains scenes of violence and gore that may disturb some viewers. However, for those who enjoy films that are dark, intense, and thought-provoking, Primal is a must-see.

I give Primal 5 out of 5 stars for its excellent direction, acting, cinematography, sound, and story.

A study in great character writing
kaideneve6 October 2023
I had no idea what to expect going into this, and although the plot may flounder a bit at times, it is a solid and memorable watch simply due to the well-written dialogue and noteworthy character development. This is a prime example of how to create an exceptional film on a shoestring budget in a single location.

Without spoiling anything, the entire story takes place at a remote gas station where a group of four prostitutes and their two drivers get stranded. As they wait around for repairs, we get some naturally written dialogue that isn't melodramatic but rather eases us into the characters. Jump scares or exaggerated actions are replaced by a growing sense of impatience and unease as a subplot unravels. The almost nihilistic characters piqued my curiosity and engaged me further.

The story may progress a bit slowly for some, but I think it's the unrushed approach that makes this film stand out. It's almost more like a psychological western than a thriller. Full marks for being unique in a world of formulaic blockbusters.

I was surprised how much I liked it.
pandoratcat23 August 2023
Judging from other reviews, people either love it or hate it; I'm of the former camp. I know it's not a must-see 10, but if you prefer a little-movie-done-well to a big-movie-done-typically, you may want to see this. Someone else didn't like the acting, I thought it was excellent. Sure, no one was trying to pull off "that scene" with which to make a name for themselves, but everyone was very believably real as their character. In fact it's hard to decide who the main character is, or at least it's not immediately obvious, you have to think about it, whereupon you might decide, like me, that it was the most seemingly unlikely person of all.

Kut. Also released as Well in Canada and Primal on FreeVee
lottofocean-1293630 January 2024
Original title of this move is Kut. Which translates to Well, the title of the film when it was released in Canada I really like this movie, it's very Eastern European. There is something about European settings and characters, that American films simply don't have. It's the Americans vs. The Eastern Europeans. Different languages. Different aesthetics, different parallax. The dubbing in the American version seems a little clunky, but I like this because it really feels like a Hungarian is standing behind me translating for me.

I love movies about sex workers and their lives. I think the actors portray European characters authentically. The film oozes Euro-Indie charm. I recommend Well (Primal) to all those who love Indie Horror movies that are quite unlike American movies.
