Honest drama about real struggle
antoniojoy2 July 2016
Demure drama about the life of a single unemployed mother in a working- class neighborhood. Jerez de la Frontera, one of the areas with more unemployment of Spain is the scenario where this story about struggle and despair is located. The film is not known for its complexity or technical part, but by its sincerity and the excellent interpretation of Natalia de Molina, which earned her the most important award in Spanish cinema, the Goya award. Some minor roles as the son or the neighbor Maria end up completing a short but very successful cast. Advisable to understand the situation in which the economic crisis has left many areas of Spain and other countries.

Techo y Comida - a review
rahiatt8 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Directed by up and coming director and writer Juan Miguel del Castillo, Techo y Comida is a drama that depicts the life of a young woman and her child amidst poverty and depression during the employment crisis of Spain in 2012. With 8 months' rent overdue and little to no food to put on the table, Rocio seeks to find a way to support her son, Adrian, and stay afloat in an increasingly difficult environment. As a single uneducated mother, Rocio struggles to maintain a side job to put more than a piece of bread and hot dogs on the table for her young child. With the help of her well-meaning neighbor Maria, Rocio hangs by a thread in both her sanity and her ability to support Adrian.

Taking place during the housing and financial crisis of Spain during the late 2000s and early 2010s, Juan Miguel del Castillo seeks to break the barrier between film and political actions. Widely unsupported by many political entities in Spain, Techo y Comida represented one of few films to critically commentate on the financial crisis and what it was doing to families like Rocio's. Jerez de la Frontera is where the family is located, and during this time, one of the areas in Spain with the highest unemployment rate.

This movie was interesting from the get go. The director uses a style of filming unlike many others that cut from scene to scene; using painfully elongated interactions that you hope will end sooner rather than later due to the depressive atmosphere. The acting done by Natalia de Molina (Rocio) is impeccable, earning her the prestigious GOYA award in 2016 for best female actress. The fear, anxiety, and depression felt by Rocio are enough to hook you in for a bitter tale about life as an unemployed single mother.

Depressing and downbeat drama about an unfortunate , stressed young mother and her little child
ma-cortes10 May 2022
¨Techo y comida¨ (2015) or ¨Food and Shelter¨ is a slow-moving and brooding drama in short budget with top-notch interpretations , being very well played by Natalia De Molina . This turns out to be an intense drama dealing with a young single but a real mother in distress who holds a chaotic and marginal life along with her son and threatened house eviction . All day long she suffers feelings of sadness , isolation , stress and loneliness . As the single mother struggles to pay the rent and put food on the table for her 10 year old son. Along the way, she takes hard-working part-time jobs , as a leaflet delivery girl , as she fights to get some money and at whatever cost . Meanwhile , her son rejects her and is chased by her landlord . Bad times go on and a rencor between mother and son emerges , and flourishing again misunderstandings . Then the emergency situation begins to turn more and more dramatic , that's why the poor economic situation depends on Rocio's life . Things go wrong until a and unexpected finale.

A depressing and some boring film about a young girl who at her 22 years old has to face a lot of distresses , penuries , conflicts and foreclosure pursued by her lessor . Delivering a deep critique about economic crisis , political corruption and vital despair. Adding tense sequences especially in its final part in an unsettling denouement . The plot bears remarkable resemblance to posterior film : ¨La hija de un ladrón¨ (2019) by Belén Funes with Greta Fernández and Eduard Fernández . A sad and very low budget film with Natalia de Molina giving a real tour-de-force acting. Stars the good actress Natalia de Molina who gives a nice acting as the young get in problem , a single mother and either she depends of the social services and she's about to eviction . She's frankly well , though the movie results to be a simple family drama with plenty of loneliness , troubles and mother-son love , at times . Other actors appearing as Mariana Cordero , Manuel Tallafé , Campuzano and Mercedes Hoyos provide brief but adequate interpretations.

This bitter and brooding picture was well and professionally written and directed by Juan Miguel del Castillo . This Techo y comida (2015) resulted to be his film debut as a writer/director , he has subsequently directed TV movies and film features , as the following ones : El niño que pintaba el mar , El secreto de Belmez , La dama del cuadro , La tragedia de Biescas , El pacto de los estudiantes , el despertar del sueño andaluz , La maniobra de la Tortuga . And he's made documentary and Shorts as Rosario and Esta caja no es tonta . Really enjoyed the introspective on this one..

BUT...

I couldnt help but keep returning to thoughts in my head of "So what are you doing to make things better ?" ... Shes not "providing" anything in this one.. everyone else is.. Not alot of working going on nor appears to be looking for work.. That spoiled it for me.. I can appreciate anyones situation and sympathize.. but doing NOTHING begets you nothing...

Social economical Drama

I really enjoyed this film. A very simple film photography wise, which portraits the crude financial crisis for some social groups in Spain.

Watch this film and submerge yourself in the South of Spain and join this single parent struggle to survive.

The way this film manages very difficult subjects is admirable. It is uncomfortable to talk about the; to watch them on this film is something else.

I really recommend it !

Not really sure what the other reviewers were watching.

They're are descriptions of struggle and hard and tense?

The mother has somewhere to live and had money to buy food. Not sure that is much of a struggle.

Ambling movie that doesn't go anywhere. Where's the story?
