Beautiful, violent, heartbreaking and transcendent
DarkAnnie10 May 2016
First off, this movie is gorgeous. It's so well shot, and the art direction is amazing. I can see why it was categorized as horror--it contains body horror and lots of gore-- but I wouldn't call it a horror film. It's about reaching out beyond the meat sacks we live in and touching other people, essence to essence. It's about love and addiction and heartbreak. It's about violence, detachment, and the pain of re-engaging with life. The acting is, for the most part, wonderful. Part of the story is told with paper animation, a film within a film created by one of the two main characters. This sub-story weaves in and out of the main story, and resonates beautifully. Don't watch this film if you're already sad--it will yank your heart out and play racquetball with it. But if you're feeling strong and you want to see something truly original and inspired, watch Androgynym.

There's A Better Movie Buried In The Movie

Now if you read my headline you probably think I'm saying that the plot could've been much better. Now while that's true, I'm actually referring to the animated movie that plays throughout the film which is infinitely better movie than the one this film is actually. I know the animated sequences are supposed to parallel the story. But honestly I felt both had very little to do with each other. The main story line is very simple. And kinda shallow actually. While the animated one is very deep, sorrowful and beautiful. It's shame that they didn't make a whole movie based on the animated sections because that would have been anywhere from an 8-10 rating. This movie is no more than a 4. And together they make a 6.

Don't expect to really go into the mind of a trans killer with this one. It never really gets that far, not from the killing side or what makes this person trans. You really get no meat on the bones here. Just a half assed love story that's better told in the animated sections but are barely relatable with the rest of the movie.
