Marissa Mayer, the former CEO of Yahoo, is recalling her time at the tech company and opening up about some regrets.
During Mayer’s tenure at the top of Yahoo, the company bought the microblogging platform Tumblr for $1.1B in 2013 but feels that they should’ve bought Netflix or Hulu instead.
“We looked at a transformative acquisition, and we bought Tumblr,” Mayer told Tech Brew in an interview. “At the same time, we were also considering whether it was possible to buy Hulu or, ironically, Netflix. And I think Netflix was $4 billion and Hulu was at $1.3 billion at the time. And either of those, with hindsight being 20/20, would have been a better acquisition.”
In 2016, Yahoo wrote down the blogging platform’s value by $230 million. By 2019, after Verizon had acquired Yahoo, the company sold Tumblr for far less than it had paid for it.

Once streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and Prime Video siphoned viewers off from the networks, everyone wanted to get in on the streaming game. That’s led to some great services like Disney+, HBO Max, Paramount+ and Apple TV+ with original programming you can’t get anywhere else.
Quibi ad in the subway | Alexi Rosenfeld/Getty Image
Not every new streaming service made it though. It’s the nature of the business. There are probably dozens of obscure streaming services that never made a dent, but these five were supposed to be somewhat big things. They’re gone now, but we can still pour one out for them.
Quibi was a misguided streaming service from the start
Perhaps the most notable streaming service flameout was Quibi. Short for “quick bites,” Quibi separated shows into segments under 10 minutes, the idea being that you could watch them in shorter blocks than 30-60 minute shows.

Eugene Cordero, who plays Time Variance Authority employee Casey / Hunter K-5E in Disney+’s Loki, has been upped to series regular for the upcoming second season. The news was first reported by Deadline, although Marvel has yet to officially comment. Cordero appeared in three episodes of the Tom Hiddleston-led superhero series and quickly won over fans with his comedic hijinx, such as using infinity stones as paperweights and not understanding what a fish is. Cordero is known for his comedic roles, having starred as a series regular in the comedies such as Other Space and Bajillion Dollar Propertie, and more recently, Tacoma Fd and Star Trek: Lower Decks. He’s also appeared in the likes of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Grace and Frankie, The Good Place, Veep, Wrecked, and Central Park. Most recently, he starred in the 2022 comedy film Easter Sunday, about a Filipino American family. While Cordero’s part...

Exclusive: Eugene Cordero is being upped to series regular for Season 2 of the Disney+ series Loki, Deadline has learned.
Marvel declined to comment.
Cordero plays the Time Variance Authority employee “Casey” in Season 1 of the Tom Hiddleston-led series. His Tva character broke out because of his genuine confusion over what is a fish and how he uses infinity stones as paperweights. He’s in the Season 1 finale credits as “Hunter K-5E” instead of Casey.
The Filipino American actor, and comedian recently starred in Amblin Partners/Rideback’s comedy feature film Easter Sunday opposite Jo Koy. Additionally, he is a series regular on the Broken Lizard’s TruTV series Tacoma Fd.
Other notable recent spots include a role as villager “Stokez’ in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, NBC’s The Good Place, the Focus Features’ dramedy The High Note, starring Dakota Johnson and directed by Nisha Ganatra, and the SXSW film Golden Arm,...

Marvel is officially launching a scripted "Squirrel Girl" podcast, with Milana Vayntrub assuming the titular role. Vayntrub was initially cast as Squirrel Girl in a live-action TV series called "New Warriors" that was ordered straight to series at Freeform in 2017, but the show unfortunately was axed before it even debuted.

Hey everybody, remember that time Yahoo decided to get into the streaming game? No? Oh right… Well back in the mid 2000s Yahoo decided they would join Netflix in the streaming realm and, well, nobody really knew or bothered to look or care. All I myself really remember was there was something to do with Community and how they lost a whole bunch of money and that pretty much killed it. Yeah that’s pretty vague and I could probably sit here and Yahoo it but… I don’t want to!
But… There was always that one show. That one show that only ever had one season on the platform. That one show that has been spoken about in hushed voices since it was first aired. A show that garnered some...

“It was possibly the most frustrating thing I’ve ever been through in my career,” Paul Feig says. “To make something I’m so proud of that was exactly what I wanted it to be that had this amazing cast, and the writing was so good. And then to be so happy with the final product and then nobody sees it.”
Feig isn’t talking about the bizarre internet backlash that greeted the 2016 version of Ghostbusters, but instead, lamenting how a year prior, in 2015, his series Other Space — which originally debuted on the now-defunct Yahoo Stream platform — was shelved with very little fanfare or announcement. If you haven’t heard of Other Space, an 8-episode comedy series, you’re forgiven. At a glance, it feels like a show you know you would instantly love; the aesthetics of ‘70s space opera, but with the jaunty, quirky humor of Community.

Paul Feig is back with his sci-fi comedy series Other Space. It was originally aired on Yahoo! Screen back in 2015, but was cancelled shortly after, due to the platform being no longer viable. The digital platform Dust has now picked it up and is scheduled to host the series in August.
Other Space takes place in the distant future, the year 2105, where the Universal Mapping Projects (Ump) has been created by a multi-national corporate coalition. Their intention is – “to explore the universe for the purpose of scientific inquiry”. The main vessel that we see during the show is the Ump Cruiser, which apparently was once used as the setting for a reality show.

Five years ago, one year before Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters hit theaters, the Bridesmaids comedy mastermind debuted a quirky, heartwarming science fiction series called Other Space. If you missed the streaming-only show back in 2015, the easiest way to describe the series would be Community meets The Orville, but better and more charming than both.
Other Space is like HBO’s Avenue 5 or Netflix’s Space Force, but funnier and far less cynical. And now, after a long absence, you can finally catch one of the best sci-fi shows you may have missed the first time around.
Check out a brand new trailer for the series right here…
In 2015, Other Space streamed exclusively on Yahoo! Screen. But after that service was shut down, the series didn’t return. But now, thanks to the new streaming service Dust, Other Space has found a new permanent home.

The fact that the new Fox series “The Orville” is an hour-long “space adventure,” not a half-hour sitcom, has proven to be a major surprise for fans of creator Seth MacFarlane.
It makes sense, given that he’s best known for the hundreds of episodes of animated comedy he’s produced since the launch of “Family Guy” in 1999. In addition, there’s much of the show’s marketing: Looking back at the original trailer presented during the Fox upfronts, from the music choices and the punchline-heavy editing to the tagline “the universe has a crew loose,” it’s easy to see why people still seem to think the series is a half-hour comedy.
Of course, as viewers now know, “The Orville” is twice the length and nowhere near as funny as expected. Instead, the freshman drama aims to create a new spin on classic science fiction series like “Star Trek” — and not that successfully.

A sloppy, untossed salad of a comedy, “Rough Night” survives on funny bits and a game cast. First-time director Lucia Aniello is a veteran of small-screen comedies like “Broad City” and “Other Space,” and like many of her peers who have leapt from TV to film, her skill at filling 22-minute time slots does not translate to a smooth debut feature. She and co-writer Paul W. Downs (“Broad City”) know their way around a gag, though, and “Rough Night” features just enough laughs to make you ignore that the movie is a hodgepodge of ideas left over from films like “The Hangover,...

Yance Ford’s new documentary “Strong Island” walked away from last month’s Sundance Film Festival with a very appropriate recognition: a special jury prize for storytelling. The filmmaker used the documentary to work through the heart-wrenching crime that took his brother’s life nearly a quarter-decade ago, crafting an intensely personal and unique storytelling conceit along the way.

Twenty-four years ago, Ford’s brother William was shot and killed by a 19-year-old white mechanic over a dispute involving a car repair. The mechanic claimed self-defense against William, who was unarmed at the time, and the man was set free. The doc is not just an investigation into the shooting, but a searing and insightful look into the racism that influenced the story and the injustice of how William became a prime suspect in his own death.

Seven years after debuting as a Funny or Die video, “Brockmire” is finally set to premiere as a half-hour comedy series. IFC has just released a new teaser for the show, which stars Hank Azaria as a baseball announcer who returns to the booth a decade after going through an on-air meltdown upon learning of his wife’s infidelity. The move is a downgrade, however, as the former Mlb broadcaster is now working for the lowly Morristown Frackers. Watch below.

In 2015, Paul Feig released “Other Space,” his sci-fi comedy that ran for one season on Yahoo! Screen. Now, in an attempt to build a larger fan base and seek a new broadcaster for a potential Season 2, the “Ghostbusters” helmer has shared all eight episodes of the series online at www.ShareOtherSpace.com.
The comedy stars Karan Soni, Milana Vayntrub and Neil Casey, as well as “Mystery Science Theater 3000” legends Joel Hodgson and Trace Beaulieu. “Other Space” is set in the early 22nd century and follows the misadventures of a bickering space exploration crew whose star cruiser ends up lost in an unknown universe.
Upon its release the series received critical acclaim, yet it toiled in anonymity on Yahoo’s fledgling streaming service, which has since shut down.

The pilots in New Form Digital’s three “incubator series” have evolved into a bevy of series orders across TV and the web. Now, the studio whose backers include Ron Howard and Discovery Communications has rolled out another batch of fresh projects, and as always, it is giving plenty of opportunities to YouTube stars, both behind and in front of the camera.
The pilots included in the latest New Form incubator series, which were first shared by The Hollywood Reporter, all run in the 10-12 minute range and cover a wide variety of genres. Included among the featured projects are a crime thriller led by Jonah Green, a digital talk show hosted by Mitchell Davis and Chris Kendall, and a teen fantasy series created by and starring Alexa Losey.
If New Form adheres to the process it has previously employed, several of these pilots will be picked up and given serial orders.

A sequel to Paul Feig's Ghostbusters movie is set to be given the greenlight by Sony...
Ghostbusters finally opened in America this past weekend, notching up a $46m opening weekend that's somewhere in the middle of what was being aimed for. Sony, meanwhile, has been quick to confirm that we're set to meet Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Kristen Wiig's Ghostbusters again.
“I expect Ghostbusters to become an important brand and franchise,” Sony's chief of worldwide distribution, Rory Bruer told The Wrap. “While nothing has been officially announced yet, there’s no doubt in my mind it will happen", he said. It's unclear as of yet if Feig will return, once Sony hits the greenlight button.
The Ghostbusters reboot has been met with a mixed but generally positive reception by critics and audiences who have actually seen the movie. It was held off...

When Dan Harmon's meta-sitcom Community was at its peak, it was one of my favorite shows on television. The way he constantly played with TV tropes through his crazy group of lovable characters was nothing short of brilliant, and the laughs and enjoyment I got from picking out all of the pop culture references on that show haven't been replicated by anything else. At one point there was talk that the show's sixth season may not be its last, but considering its poor reception when it was rescued from cancellation by Yahoo Screen, it doesn't seem like its die-hard fans made time to seek it out at its new home.
Frankly, as much as it pains me to say this, they didn't miss much. The sixth season wasn't very good and never came close to achieving the brilliance of any of the previous Harmon-led seasons, and after that season ended,...

Yahoo no longer has its own dedicated video hub. The long-time internet giant officially shuttered its video property Yahoo Screen the week of December 28, 2015.
Since Yahoo Screen launched way back in June 2006, the online video platform (whose old URL now redirects simply to yahoo.com) has housed various syndicated content (like Saturday Night Live) as well as a live stream of a London-hosted NFL game. Yahoo Screen was also home to Yahoo’s slate of original programming, including Community, Sin City Saints, and Other Space. Unfortunately for Yahoo, the company’s efforts into creating original content resulted in a total loss of $42 million in the third quarter of 2015, which was a heavy hit considering Yahoo has consistently struggled to grow and stay relevant over the last few years.

Yahoo Screen, the web giant's attempt to become a major player in the streaming wars, is no more: Variety reports that Yahoo has shut down its two-year-old streaming service, which carried everything from SNL clips to a Jacksonville Jaguars game to the prophesied sixth season of Community. Back in October, the company took a $42 million write-down on Yahoo Screen, thanks in part to its expensive original programming. That programming, though, will stay on the site; it will just be scattered to various sections of the Yahoo-niverse, like Yahoo Music and Yahoo TV. Yes, that's right: Other Space will live on in another space.

2015 saw the start (or at least official dubbing) of #PeakTV, a recognition of the wealth of excellent television available to fans of the medium. This is reflected in PopOptiq’s staff list for the year: While our site-wide list separated neatly into a consensus just-over Top 20, 50 separate series received votes. Series from each of the networks and a wide range of cable channels and streaming services were nominated, showing just how wide an array of viewing options are available, and the variety of topic, tone, and theme of the series comprising the list is truly refreshing. 2015 is the year the glut of quality television threatened to overwhelm even the biggest TV fans. Here are the 20+ that stood out to our staff.

The mega-show list format is back this week on the podcast, with PopOptiq’s own Deepayan Sengupta joining Kate to talk through a very full week in TV. First we look at the comedies, including fantastic episodes of You’re the Worst and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and catch up with Other Space season one. Next are the genre offerings, including the premieres of Les Revenants season two, Grimm season five, and Ash vs Evil Dead season one, as well as plenty of superhero and CW fare. We finish out the week’s TV with the dramas, with a deep dive on The Affair and a timed roundup of Kate’s notable drama viewing, and afterwards, we head to the DVD Shelf for the second installment of the Holiday Omnibus. Yahoo isn’t doing so well on the original series front. The online media giant has announced it’s cancelling plans for the live DJ competition show Ultimate DJ from producer Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment brand.
Ultimate DJ, a competition series about electronic dance music (Edm) DJs competing, was originally announced at Yahoo’s 2015 Digital Newfronts presentation. The media giant had plans to air the show live on Yahoo and integrate it into Yahoo’s owned property and micro-blogging platform Tumblr. Variety notes that earlier this week, Yahoo had said it was moving forward with Ultimate DJ, aiming for a 2016 debut, before making the recent decision to cancel production. A Syco rep declined to comment on Variety’s story.
The news of Yahoo’s decision to quit pursuing Ultimate DJ comes only a few days after the media company and internet pioneer cancelled plans on another project. Yahoo shuttered the TV-length comedy The Pursuit,...

Happy Friday, everybody! As previously discussed, Ask Alan is now a weekly show. Thanks for filling up the mailbox with lots of great questions, and please keep 'em coming to askalan@hitfix.com (as always, the more tightly-phrased, the better). On this week's episode (recorded Tuesday), I answer questions about great characters who weren't part of their shows' first season, what Yahoo's $42 million loss on "Community" and "Other Space" means for Peak TV in America, and why we've somehow made it to Halloween without a single network show being officially canceled yet, even though series like "Minority Report" and "The Player" are effectively dead, but still airing. That's all embedded below. Thanks, send questions, and see you next week!

In March and April 2015, Yahoo debuted three new original series, including the sixth season of the NBC-cancelled Community. However, these in-house projects didn’t do so well financially for the struggling tech giant. Yahoo lost $42 million from its original video division in the third quarter of 2015.
In its most recent earnings call, Yahoo’s CFO Ken Goldman said the primary originals responsible for the $42 million loss were Community (which debuted on March 17), Sin City Saints (March 31), and Paul Feig’s Other Space (April 14). Goldman said with these projects, Yahoo simply “couldn’t see a way to make money over time.” The $42 million hit only helped contribute to Yahoo’s overall poor third-quarter performance, as the internet brand missed both net and revenue income estimates.

Community has gone from NBC to Yahoo after the network cancelled it after season five. Season six aired on Yahoo Screen, and now there is talk from Yahoo that season seven of the series will not happen.
In fact, Yahoo is blaming Community and two other series, Sin City Saints and Other Space, for the failure of their venture into online original programming.
That comes from comments made by Ken Goldman, Yahoo CFO, during a conference call held on Tuesday, according to The Wrap. That outlet shared Goldman's comments.

With yesterday's news that Yahoo lost $42 million in the third quarter in its bid to become a major player in the streaming TV space—which CFO Ken Goldman attributed to a failure to monetize its revival of NBC's "Community," as well as original series "Sin City Saints" and "Other Space"—it's clear that even companies with a one-billion-user footprint are not guaranteed success in the current, ultra-competitive landscape. But dig into the details and the picture becomes more complicated. Here are our four key takeaways from the Yahoo debacle: Read More: "TV's Obsession with Remakes Could End the 'Golden Age'" 1. Content is (still) king. Though "Community," Dan Harmon's acclaimed, knowing spin on the network sitcom, set at a Colorado community college and peppered with pop culture references, brought with it a passionate following, it was never going to be enough to transform Yahoo from a lumbering Internet giant into a nimble.

Well, this news is streets behind. Yahoo has revealed that the company lost almost $42 million on their original programming projects in the last financial quarter. Variety reports that Yahoo ‘couldn’t effectively monetize’ Sin City Saints, Other Space or the sixth season of Community.
“We thought long and hard about it, and what we concluded is (for) certain of our original video (series), we couldn’t see a way to make money over time,” said Yahoo’s Chief Financial Officer Ken Goldman of the loss, which totalled at exactly $41.699 million.
Pinpointing a couple of specific reasons behind this financial disappointment, Variety notes that Community ‘couldn’t gather enough of an audience, or long-term commitments from advertisers, to make the investment into original content at that scale pay back.’

Original TV content isn't looking profitable over at Yahoo, which released an overall weak third-quarter earnings report Tuesday. The tech giant's CFO Ken Goldman told reporters over the phone that the company's video division specifically took a huge (read: $42 million) hit — namely thanks to such underperforming series as Community, Sin City Saints, and Other Space, all of which have officially been written off and deemed poor investments. This is bad news particularly for Community fans, as it further supports the line of thinking that the show's on its way out. The property had been revived for a sixth season at Yahoo after NBC axed it, but star Joel McHale has said a second season at its new home is unlikely because of the cast's rising star power. (Looks like creator Dan Harmon's prophecy is coming true, too.)The intent of the company's foray into the original-content space in the...

Yahoo's push into original content, spearheaded by its pickup of the Dan Harmon comedy "Community" for a sixth season, turned out to be a financial bust for for the former giant of the search engine world.

It looks like Greendale High has shut its doors once and for all.
After being cancelled by NBC and then picked up by Yahoo, there was hope that Dan Harmon's sitcom "Community" would be able to continue life on the online portal where it reportedly had performed well in its sixth season.
Sadly though, the show's star Joel McHale spoke with Metro Weekly recently and said that there won't be any further episodes. It's not because Yahoo doesn't want to continue it, rather it's because the show is too prohibitively expensive to continue with:
"No. They wanted to. But all of our contracts were up after six years. All the actors on the show, almost without exception - their stock has risen significantly and it's out of the pay rate that is affordable to make the show. So you're not going to be able to get Alison Brie or...

Over the past few years, as the popularity of various streaming services has grown, so has the emergence of original offerings from them, with Netflix coming up with shows such as Daredevil and Orange is the New Black, Amazon releasing series such as Transparent and Bosch, and Yahoo picking up on the sixth season of cult hit Community alongside Other Space.
