Olivia Cooke is Incredible in this!
chris_robbo_2324 October 2018
This movie is a real life gritty drama. Katie (Olivia Cooke) and her Mother live in poverty and sell their bodies to make ends meet. Katie is saving up to move away from it all to California when she meets a man she falls in love with. Simple story but a very important one, I fear this is every day life for more young women than we realise. It's a movie not without some flaws but powerful and keeps you watching. Olivia Cooke shows us just how strongly talented she Is in this very tricky role. Just recently in my own life I've been faced with moving away to the other end of the world alone and starting life for myself and it's not an easy task. So there were parts to this movie I could relate to. Katie is more decent than the majority of people despite what she does to earn extra money, good morals and kindness, willing to take the blame for things she didn't do. 8/10

Katie Hangs Tough
tigerfish5027 December 2019
Katie waitresses at a remote Arizona roadside diner and lives in a mobile home with her depressed mom, who spends the rent money on booze. Instead of being overwhelmed by such challenging circumstances, Katie has set her sights on moving to San Francisco to become a beautician. In order to realize this dream, she supplements her meager wages and tips by prostituting herself to passing truckers and local citizens - and keeps her savings from these encounters in a shoe-box under her bed.

Katie is cheerful and resilient to a degree which stretches credulity, but Olivia Cooke does extraordinary work to keep her believable. Meanwhile director Wayne Roberts extracts fine performances from the rest of his cast. Despite her engaging personality, Katie has made enemies as well as friends in town - and when she falls in love with a taciturn ex-jailbird mechanic and quits selling her body, they show their true colors. The script piles troubles onto Katie's shoulders as her altered lifestyle becomes the catalyst for betrayals and serious danger. The subsequent events are tough to watch - but the excellent acting, direction and cinematography make it well worthwhile.

Heart-rending but beautiful
Vindelander11 December 2018
Well. What a film and what a performance by Olivia Cooke. Such a gentle creature as portrayed and yet the world vomits on her eiderdown. I would cheerfully kill those people who were so cruel to her and yet her spirit seems to be unbroken, depending on how you interpret the ending.

Sensitively written and directed and good acting by all - it has to be if, as I did, you feel that you'd like to punch many of them in the face.

When you want to see a a sad but accurate view of the cruelty of mankind here's a brilliant example. In the same class as Monster with Theron and Ricci. Memorable

Heartbreaking

For this movie, set aside an hour and a half when you don't need something simple and happy. Watch it in a quiet moment when you feel a little contemplative as to how life might have turned out if you had gotten nothing but bad breaks. Remember that this sweet, helpless young girl is someone who would be demonized by a lot of people today. Remember that life sometimes goes wrong. Maybe she'll fix it, maybe she won't. But everyone with a shred of empathy is rooting for her by the end of this movie. It is beautifully told and beautifully acted.

Extremely Depressing
kylepop24 February 2019
I'm all for a heart wrenching drama about someone who's down on their luck, but Katie Says Goodbye has 0 bright parts to it.

Katie, played beautifully by Olivia Cooke is an extremely naive waitress having sex on the side for money to fund an ambitious move to San Francisco.

She's a character that's too good for this terrible world, which is clearly what the writers are trying to portray. But they lay this notion on too thick, with one terrible circumstance after another and not a single moment to counterbalance this, the result? Katie as a character becomes one-note.

Like I said, this movie has a great performance by Olivia Cooke and is worth watching just for her.

What a performance but hard to watch
daxsir10 December 2018
I found it one of the hardest films to watch that I have ever seen. Olivia Cooke as always was sensational. Her performance as the wounded bird doing her best to be nice and upbeat as she gets by in a poverty stricken Arizona town feels so real. With her dead beat mum doing nothing but drag her down it hits so many heart strings. Their drab live in their trailer home was so believable and you begin to care so much for Katie due to the performance of Olivia that when people treat her so badly it becomes more heart breaking as it goes. Yes it is harsh but its real not everyone lives a good life and this show how hard it is to be poor in any country not just the states and the things people do to get by in a broken life. I was an extra on The Limehouse Golem with Olivia so I know how small she is and that added to my discomfort and the urge to want to give her a hug.

Fantastic acting... but overly bleak.
arthousefilms-68-9397176 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The acting in this film was gripping. The tone was amazing and super compelling. The scope of the film was perfectly suited to highlight the small town drama. However, this film was overly bleak and too uncomfortable to be enjoyable to watch!

*************** SPOILERS **************** The problem with this movie is that it had very few moments of joy or goodness to offset all the misery it presented. It was brutally graphic and raw... but out of balance. I really needed a little sunshine to counterbalance all the evil. Luckily, Bear, the truck driver, and the diner boss lady, were in Katie's corner. But it never they never got a chance to shine as a hero or mentor for her.

Every little bit of redemption or hope was missing or hidden from the audience. For example, when the mechanic goes to beat up the rapist, we didn't get to have the justice of seeing the revenge on screen. In stead, they just cut away. It was frustrating to not get closure on seeing the rapist get his due.

And even in the very end of the movie, we see Katie is finally choosing to overcome and move on. But she hitchhikes to a semi truck and we know she is just going to get abused again. I wish the semi pulled up, and a really friendly and motherly lady trucker was at the wheel. Then we would have felt like Katie was going to be ok. But instead, we know exactly what will happen in that truck.

Overall, my feeling felt like... If you are getting hit on the hand with a hammer for 2 hours, it feels really good when someone stops hitting. Like when Katie finally chooses hope at the end. Sure, she chose hope, but after being hit with a hammer so long, any break would feel good. It felt manipulative in that way, gratuitous cruelty with the end goal of relief.

A harrowing film but the performance of Olivia Cooke is breathtaking. One of those films you would only want to watch once, but it's definitely an exceptional movie.

Katie the One-Dimensional Doormat
magicalmundanity1 May 2023
There is absolutely nothing realistic about this script. The way it's written is so over the top and the protagonist is so one-dimensional it's unbelievable. There's no way someone would be a doormat to this degree letting everyone have their way with her without no resistance, no anger, no nothing. I'm sorry, but men shouldn't write scripts about women. This is nothing more than vapid prostitute fetish rubbish. All of the actors were phenomenal but the story was so disappointing. I am so mad I sat here and watched all of this, to be honest. There was absolutely no complexity, no evolution in the main character. What a missed opportunity.

Phenomenal

Finding out who sees you for who you are. There are bad people and there are good people, but they're often not the ones you think they are. Hope has a supernatural way of surviving no matter how hard you try to kill it.

How does a studio read a script about how it is for women written and directed by men and say this is worth the budget your asking for. STOP the madness.

Olivia Cooke gives a knockout performance as a teenager trying to better herself but constant obstacles make it difficult. It's a slow burn film that's quite depressing and hard to watch. Also a few controversial scenes that aren't for the faint of heart.

The film was made in 2016 but looks as if it's just surfaced now... It's definitely one of the better films I've seen in 2019 so far.

It's not a 10/10 film but it's certainly worthy of a higher rating of 6.7...

The performances from everyone in this film are good, especially Cooke and recommend it to anyone who loves great cinema and doesn't need crazy CGI and action to solely satisfy their viewing needs

keep hope alive
ferguson-67 June 2019
Greetings again from the darkness. This little gem played at the 2017 Dallas International Film Festival, and at that time, I wrote about how writer/director Wayne Roberts was one of the new and most exciting filmmakers to burst on the scene. Now, more than two years later, the film is finally getting the distribution it deserves, and I still worry there will be those who decry another film exploiting women as a victim of society. I also still stand behind my case that there is another way to view the story of Katie, a good-hearted dreamer played beautifully by Olivia Cooke ("Bates Motel", THOROUGHBREDS, READY PLAYER ONE).

Initially, Katie's unflappable optimism seems unlikely, if not impossible. She walks miles to work along a dusty highway. She lives in a trailer park with her deadbeat mother (Mireille Enos), whom she supports both financially and emotionally. She works double-shifts as a waitress at a truck stop, where she's known to toss in a couple extra bucks when a particularly frugal customer stiffs the other waitress. She also works a side job as a prostitute for locals and a regular trucker named Bear (Jim Belushi). Despite a life filled with *stuff*, Katie doggedly pursues her dream of saving enough money to move to San Francisco and become a hair stylist. Of course, since she's cursed with a heart of gold, she has to save enough money for her own trip AND for her mother to live on. Her dream seems lofty, yet almost achievable.

When Katie falls for Bruno (Christopher Abbott), the new guy in town, she tries her best to fall in love and pull him into her dreams for a better life. It doesn't take long before Bruno is made aware of Katie's side job, and her fantasy world begins to crumble. On a daily basis, Katie happily (of course) drinks up the truck stop wisdom of diner owner Maybelle (Mary Steenburgen), who spouts such gems as "A man with a smile will hurt you". Good intentions abound here, but we realize ... even if Katie doesn't ... that the reality of people's self-interest is the immovable object that so often tears down the dreamers of the world.

As with much of life, one's enjoyment of the film is likely contingent upon the perspective you bring. A caustic, cynical view will have you waving off Katie's lot in life as exploitive movie-making; while those who can share even a spoonful of Katie's spirit, will find themselves rooting exuberantly for her dreams to come true ... or at least to sustain her refreshing outlook on life and people. Director Roberts recently released his newest, THE PROFESSOR, starring Johnny Depp. He remains a filmmaker to follow.

Least enjoyable movie that I was glad I watched
mgillis-6778628 February 2021
I don't think anyone could enjoy this movie, but I think that people who saw it will be glad they did because of all the emotions this movie and this actress made them feel. Olivia Cooke was exceptional. I felt proud that the leading character was able to stay positive throughout, she was a winner who had not yet experienced winning. She will and she would go on to bigger and better things in the future. Mireilli Enos was great as her selfish and depressed mother.

An innate human capacity
Saelenek27 February 2021
People who see what a gem of a movie this is understand how it feels like to be dealt a hard hand in life, and then being able to get back up again. In Katie's instance, a series of unfortunate moments compressed into a culminating extremity. I see an all too real snapshot of resilience with a nothing more to lose attitude, where the human spirit displays its interminable capacity to bounce back and deal with trauma and loss.

Beautiful, heart wrenching, and hopeful
marrowmovies16 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is filled with beauty and optimism, balanced equally with absolute heartbreak. Olivia Cooke delivers an incredible performance as Katie, who somehow maintains hope in spite of some pretty horrible circumstances. Christopher Abbott is equally compelling in the movie. While the film certainly could be seen as "depressing" as some other reviewers have said, the message of the film seems quite clear to me: there is always hope. No matter how bad things get, no matter how much pain and heartbreak you endure, you get up and dust yourself off and keep pressing on. I believe Katie didn't give up on her dreams and worked her way into a better life. I love this film.

I want to adopt Katie
elishawin200525 December 2019
There's not any fancy high tech scenes or anything like that but boy does it make you feel things and leaves you thinking about everything. I loved Katie! She was a real person and not just a role that somebody played. Unfortunately there's a lot of Katie's in the world, maybe even our next door neighbor. I'm going to try to talk myself into thinking that maybe, just maybe it all worked out for her.

recepvesek16 December 2019
This is a terrific movie. Well written, acted and directed. Raw situations of our daily lives without a doubt. Olivia Cooke is beautiful and talented. 10x maybe more talented all the overrated bimbos in Hollywood such as Kirsten Stewart or Anna Kendrick... Drama movie at its best.

"We All Got Our Place in the World"
lavatch3 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
One of only two characters in the film who treats Katie like a human being is the jovial trucker named "Bear." At one critical point in the film, Katie is describing how she wants to leave the bleak existence of her impoverished Arizona desert world to move to San Francisco and become a hair stylist. But Bear attempts to put Katie in her place by saying "we all got our place in the world." Bear's words are worth examining in the context of the world view presented in this film.

"Katie Says Goodbye" implies a bleak naturalism in which the angelic Katie is exploited by her mother and the men of the small Arizona town. Mr. Daniels was her teacher in the local school, yet he forces Katie to have sex with him. Dirk and Matty are regulars at the diner where Katie works, and they brutally rape Katie. Bruno is the ex-con, looking to start a new life after serving time for grand theft. He is incapable of recognizing Katie's soul or seeing how she has been abused. By the end, Bruno will be returning to prison. Katie's mother recognizes her own depravity in sponging off of her daughter, when she bluntly asserts that "I'm not a very good person."

The second person to provide support to Katie is Maybelle, her supervisor at work. But Maybelle is not a keen observer of the culture of the diner. Otherwise, she would have recognized long ago how Katie was being manhandled by the predators. She would have also known without asking that it was Chris, the daughter of the repellent Mr. Daniels, who stole the $40 from the cash register and not Katie.

So, the question that lingers is what degree of agency does Katie have in her life? Is Bear is correct in assuming that Katie needs to know her "place in the world" and never entertain the possibility of rising from her squalid existence? Or is there hope for Katie to realize her dream of becoming a stylist?

Through Katie's incandescent spirit and her resilience, the film offers a ray of hope for Katie to discover like-minded, decent people on a life's journey to happiness after her trial in hell.

What a great movie!

Warning: Spoilers
Katie is play beautifully by Olivia Cook. Hard to believe she's British. This movie is flawless, as far as acting. The plot however, is so depressing, but I couldn't take my eyes off of it. She loses everything in one day and yet gets up, literally, and starts over. Bravo!

Beautifully Heart-Wrenching Drama
RadiantPoppy27 March 2020
Olivia Cooke is absolutely phenomenal in her portrayal of, Katie, a small town girl, struggling to build a better life for herself. All the roles were incredibly well-acted, but Olivia's performance is so believable and raw, that there were times I forgot I was watching a movie and not actually observing someone's real life.

As others have mentioned, some scenes were quite difficult to watch, but overall, there's valuable lessons to be learned about life, perseverance, and the human spirit. This film is a beautifully-crafted slow burn, that will break your heart and will stay with you long after the credits have rolled.
