It was not bad, just not great. Felt like a knock off of Book of Life, only less funny. I would recommend for small kids who don't ask why, much. Because this movie made no sense in the end. Could have been much better, with a better story line.

A complete failure

Making an animated movie requieres a lot of things. Some of these things are a budget, of course; a good script; and creativity. Día de Muertos doesn't have any of those things.

I know there's a lot of people here in Mexico trying to grow the animation industry, but animated movies should be made only when they're worth of trying. Día de muertos took over 5 years to complete it's production, why would you spend so much time and money in something that doesn't have a good script? And I really mean it: the story is unbelievable boring and forced, each single situation and decision through the film feels unnatural and even cringy; characters are unidimensional and inconsistent with they're own develop; jokes are just repetitive and annoying to the point I wanted to leave the theatre (and I NEVERE do this). So, if you don't have a good script why are you trying to make an animated movie? And it is obvious that the producers didn't have the budget neither.

The lack of creativity is fundamental for this cinematographic failure. It's like if they just made the most "off the shelf" characters, designs and EVERYTHING in order to bring us something without soul.

The only reason I would recommend this is if you want to learn what NOT TO DO if you want to make an full length animated feature. Any other reason you're wasting your time.

Do not watch this movie - absolute waste of time.
mouseexd30 July 2021
This is probably the worst movie I've ever seen. I've seen a lot of bad movies, but nothing comes even close to this one. I watched it back in 2019, in a cinema. I was considering leaving the theatre (for the first time in my life...), but decided to just finish watching it. I am to this day upset I wasted my time and money.

The movie is incredibly boring and predictable, there is almost no background sound/soundtrack. Almost nothing is happening in the background, only in the foreground. The characters are terribly written and impossible to root for. The designs are boring/painful to look at. Plus, the animation itself is awful, you can see not a lot of budget was put into it. The plot is completely unoriginal.

The entire movie just looks like it's been forced, absolutely no heart nor passion was present in the making of this. It's just a complete disaster of a movie.

For comparison, if you want a good movie based on Dia de los Muertos, or a good animation movie in general - I HIGHLY reccommend "Coco". It's a cinemtaic masterpiece, an exact opposite of whatever this is.

Say what you want, but when kids REALLY LIKE a KIDS movie...
carlosmonzon-599879 August 2020
When it comes to movies for kids I have my faves; when it comes to kids movies, my kids have THEIR OWN, and as you'd guess it, we coincide occasionally and some times we just can't agree at all. Día de muertos is a movie I do not think has the best quality in several production aspects. Reviewers mostly complain about a bad script, to me it wasn't horrible, just not top quality. Kids on the other hand can careless about a 'top quality' script, as long as they feel entertained and drawn into the story, and so it is that in this aspect, the movie succeeded. My kids were rooting for the main characters, cared for them and had good laughs, sometimes sadness. And you can really gauge how much they like a movie by how many times they ask to rewatch it. This movie is not The Book of Life or Coco when it comes to budget (though similar subjects) or production value but it has enough originality to stand on its own. Comedy in it does seem forced but again, my kids actually laugh through the funny moments and even days later would comment or reenact some funny parts of the movie. There are so many reviews I've seen here on on movies by less prominent studios, independent films or foreign kids movies that get absolutely trashed! When, some of them my kids and I have actually enjoyed quite a bit, many times I've liked those films better that those of the big studios that are so formulaic and extremely predictable. Is like they punish a good story's originality if the production value is not up to par. Día de muertos is one of those cases. It is said they 'spent a lot of many' making it but I doubt it would be significant enough to be compared to that of Coco's budget. In summary, let your kids watch it and let them decide, in this case, I recommend to skip the reviews and make your own mind. Sure, a lot of times when kids watch we watch with them and have our own expectations and disappointments. But if we're going to review we should take their opinion into account. So this movie deserves a combined rating of 8 stars!

Good movie with a so so script
jplox3 November 2019
I'm a Mexican national and watching a movie with my 4 year old was a really good idea for a Saturday afternoon.

However, there was an excess of words that tried to be funny and made it difficult to comprehend for my daughter.

I will recommend to see it and watch with young eyes and remember being a kid with all your family elder traditions, that's priceless.

Don't try to compare it with Coco, it's a different setting and less a Disney movie. It feels more authentic and original.

Definitely there were things that could be donde differently, but my understanding is that the movie took a really long time to be made because of funds and legal issues.

I will definitely buy this movie and have it for my children to watch It again.

I enjoyed the film and was impressed with the animation with such a limited budget.

My new favorite day of the dead movie!!!!
glorinha-004164 April 2020
I honestly think this movie is good. I love the characters (Pedro is my favorite because he's voiced by Luis Dubuc and he looks like Zayn Malik from one direction back in 2011 XD)

Very Original!
payanr-9828017 January 2023
This movie overcame many challenges and lacked a big budget, but was still an incredibly original and creative film. The animation is quite detailed, especially in terms of outfits. Most animations will dish out generic outfits to save on costs but this film has beautiful imagery, scenes, and clothes!

This film woul have been an 8, but given what they created despite the circumstances and resource constraints, I award it a 10/10.

The story is very interesting and there's cute parts but also the majority is action oriented, which is great because you really wanna know what comes next and get immersed, and there's no musicals or fluff just killing time.

The only thing I found inconsistent is that even though it's a Mexican movie and she spoke indigenous for the spells, there was a castle and the undead knights instead of some sort of pyramids or undead caballeros or something more mexican themed since Mexicans don't use knight armor or make castles.
