Midnight Pulp has revealed the new films that are joining the cult streaming service in April.

Horror highlights include: Dario Argento‘s aria of terror in Opera; controversial video nasty I Spit on Your Grave; werewolf movie The Forest Hills featuring Shelley Duvall‘s final performance; and ’80s Italian cult classic Demons.

There’s also ’70s proto-slasher Alice, Sweet Alice starring Brooke Shields in her film debut; grim psychological thriller We Need to Talk About Kevin with Tilda Swinton and John C. Reilly; body-horror favorite American Mary; and exhaustive doc Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror.

Severin Films are releasing restored versions of Russ Meyer's Vixen trilogy in Uhd, Blu-ray and DVD formats.

Beneath The Valley Of The Ultra-Vixens is the final film in the trilogy. Unlike Vixen and Supervixens it is mostly shot indoors. Compered with the fairly neutral backdrops, greens of the pine forest, oranges and browns of the desert, the interiors are complex and vibrant. All three films benefit from being watched in 4K Uhd version but for the first two High Dynamic Range is superfluous. This is not the case for Beneath The Valley Of The Ultra-Vixens with its deeper contrasts.

The Uhd version comes with an audio commentary by Meyer. As with the other commentaries by Meyer it is fairly entertaining, varied, and provides a lot of information about the film. The disc also comes with an original trailer which is more entertaining than the film itself.

The wide open desert landscapes of the second film, SuperVixens, lend themselves well to 4K. Like the other films in this series the Uhd version is making use of High Dynamic range but again Meyer's film does not derive much benefit from this. Most of the film is shot against the vistas of Arizona. Meyer makes the desert warm and soft. The natural earth tones and the even blue skies don't want to have exaggerated contrast.

The Uhd version comes with an audio commentaries by Meyer. As with the other commentaries by Meyer it is fairly entertaining, varied, and provides a lot of information about the film. The disc also comes with an original trailer. There's over-the-top narration by Meyer for an over-the-top film.

The Blu-ray and DVD come with some added special features.

The first film, Vixen!, looks great on the 4K Uhd. This version is making use of High Dynamic range but Meyer's film does not derive much benefit from this. Most of the film is shot in a well lit outdoor environment, it's not in black and white or special effects heavy. The contrasts between light and dark are mild and can be adequately displayed without the need for Hdr.

The Uhd version comes with two audio commentaries, the first by Meyer and the second by the star of the film Erica Gavin. Both are entertaining, varied and provide a lot of information about the film. The second commentary by Gavin, the film's star, should put to rest any qualms people may feel about Meyer as a film maker. Despite making exploitation films, Meyer didn't sexually exploit his.

One would expect that the second instalment of Russ Meyer's Vixen trilogy would in some way follow on from the first film. Thinking that would be a mistake. SuperVixens has precious little to do with Vixen, in much the same way as Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls is unconnected with Valley Of The Dolls. There are of course some similarities between the two sexploitation comedies, and any other Russ Meyer film for that matter: scarlet as a motif for sex; large breasted, sexually dominant women; the bare wire frame of a mattress; nature and nudity.

Clint Ramsey (Charles Pitts), a mechanic at a gas station, receives a phone call from his partner SuperAngel (Shari Eubank). During the call SuperAngel hears the voice of a flirtatious customer, SuperLorna (Christy Hartburg), and goes ballistic, threatening to burn down their house. Clint rushes home. On his return he is subjected to a.

Vixen is a piece of Sixties sexplotation from director Russ Meyer. The film straddles soft core porn, farce and action. It starts with a somewhat innuendos voice over placing the viewer in the Canadian bush. Tom Palmer (Garth Pillsbury) is a bush pilot. In his light plane he connects the isolated communities of the Canadian wilderness. Erica Gavin plays his loving and unfaithful wife, the film's titular - pun intended - protagonist.

While her husband is away, the hypersexual Vixen Palmer plays with almost anyone she can get her hands on. The exception is her brother Judd's (Jon Evans) friend Niles (Harrison Page), a black Vietnam draft dodger to whom she is overtly racist. Just as things are coming to a head between Vixen and Niles, Tom finds a new client, O'Bannion (Michael Donovan O'Donnell). O'Bannion is an Ira terrorist who plans to hijack Tom's plane and take it to Cuba.

Russ Meyer, who singlehandedly put the sexploitation film on the map in 1959 with his pioneering The Immoral Mr. Tees, was a veritable one-man band. He produced, wrote, directed, shot, and edited his own films, which are instantly recognizable by an inimitable aesthetic dominated by cuts delivered at a stupefyingly rat-a-tat pace. Meyer described his personal tastes as centered on “big bosoms and square jaws”, and his films usually traded in stereotypes pushed to the limits of absurdity and the cartoonish. Meyer’s ability to serve up heaping helpings of unabashed sex laced with withering social satire is virtually unrivaled.

So it was a lamentable loss for lovers of film (smut or otherwise) when Meyer’s work, practically ubiquitous in the VHS era, sank into unavailability at the dawn of the DVD era, with the sole exception of his one major studio production: 1970’s Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. But...

This medieval-mystical fantasy story didn't do big numbers at the box office, nor did it win over critics. But as the decades passed, the franchise developed a cult following. Coincidentally, Aaron Johnson-Taylor's Kraven has abilities very similar to the protagonist from that property. Severin Films has announced the upcoming release of the Russ Meyer Vixen Trilogy on Blu-ray and Uhd, bringing together three of Meyer’s most provocative works – Vixen, Supervixens, and Beneath the Valley of the Ultravixens – in meticulously restored 4K editions. With a legacy rivaling Roger Corman’s, Meyer burst onto the film scene in the 1960s, establishing himself as a B-movie maestro with a penchant for big action and even bigger…well…you know. He would eventually garner wide acclaim for cheeky comedies like “Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!” and “Beneath the Valley of the Dolls,” the latter of which was scripted by renowned film critic Roger Ebert. However, as a fierce independent, Meyer maintained ownership of all his films until his death in 2004, making it difficult to produce physical copies for wide distribution.

Three films by Russ Meyer, the sexploitation director film critic Roger Ebert described as “the ultimate auteur,” are coming to physical media in December.

The estate of the pioneering independent filmmaker has reached an agreement with media company Severin Films to distribute three of his signature films, “Vixen,” “Supervixens” and “Beneath the Valley of the Ultravixens,” on home video for the first time in decades. Working in collaboration with Janice Cowart and The Russ Meyer Trust, Severin’s discs — available in 4K Uhd, Blu-ray and DVD — mark the first remastering of Meyer’s films from the original camera negatives since the early 1980s, and each will be accompanied by both new and archival special features curated exclusively for these releases.

“As a filmmaker, distributor and First Amendment warrior, Russ Meyer is one of the last great icons of American cinema,” David Gregory, co-founder and CEO of Severin Films said in a statement.

Starting with Arrow back in 2012, the Arrowverse became home to many of DC's greatest TV series as it put its stamp on the superhero television market. By using its serial format, the Arrowverse outshone the Dceu by gripping audiences with riveting episodic cliffhangers and introducing great concepts like the multiverse, before it was popular to do so.

At the height of The CW's programming, Greg Berlanti's Arrowverse had six live-action shows running simultaneously, namely Arrow, Batwoman, Black Lightning, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl. The new DC Universe should take a gradual approach to introducing its heroes, similar to the success of the Arrowverse. A strong foundation, like Arrow in the Arrowverse, is crucial for the success of the new DC Universe. The DC Universe should take inspiration from the Arrowverse in terms of diverse and strong casting, embracing the craziness of DC Comics, and incorporating the multiverse concept without overusing it.

When planning for the future of the new DC Universe, DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran can learn some valuable lessons from the success of The CW's Arrowverse. Andrew Kreisberg, the disgraced former Warner Bros. Television writer and producer, was arrested and charged for forcible touching during a March bar mitzvah celebration in New York.

Vanity Fair’s Maureen Ryan, one of the reporters who was among the first to break the story of Kreisberg’s allegedly inappropriate workplace behavior, was the first to report the story. According to the woman who made a statement to the police about the incident, she was eating and enjoying the party at a high-top table. That’s when Kreisberg approached her and started to put his arms “all over my arms and back.”

“He then slid his hands around my waist, grabbed my waist firmly, and thrust his fully erect penis into my buttocks twice,” the statement reads.

A great swath of musicians, their music, and their fans have frequently been disparaged over the years. I'm talking about "hair metal" bands and their fans.

A new three-part series now on Paramount+ digs into several musicians and their experiences of the era, recounting their rise and when the fiery flame of the brightest period for their brand was snuffed out.

We had the chance to catch up with a couple of those musicians, and today, we're sharing our discussion with Janet Gardner, best known as the lead singer of the all-female group Vixen.

Gardner, now a dental hygenist and still making kickass music with her husband, Justin James, opened up for I Wanna Rock: The '80s Metal Dream director Tyler Measom and for us during our candid discussion.

Oliver Queen actor Stephen Amell has kept busy since he left The CW's Arrow. The CW's Arrowverse comes to an end in 2023 with The Flash season 9 after more than a decade's worth of superhero content on the small screen. Although Grant Gustin's Barry Allen became the face of the Arrowverse thanks to the popularity of The Flash, it was Stephen Amell who started it all, giving the franchise its name once Arrow proved that a vast and interconnected DC universe was possible on TV.

Throughout Arrow's eight seasons and multiple appearances across Batwoman, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Vixen, and Supergirl, Stephen Amell not only cemented Oliver Queen as an iconic live-action Green Arrow but also portrayed his evil counterpart Dark Arrow, a body-swapped version of The Flash, and a future version of Oliver Queen. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe was busy changing the way Hollywood studios approach their biggest franchises (and all which that implies), The CW and DC were off making TV history with the Arrowverse. Much like the House of Ideas' multimedia superhero property, the Arrowverse was all over the place in terms of its quality and success. Certain killjoys would tell you its flagship series went on for way too long, while others would blame its limited resources and financing for preventing it from truly doing justice to the epic comic book arcs it adapted.

Overall, though, the Arrowverse was a daring experiment in the best way. That's why we're hitting the pause button and reflecting on its legacy before DC Studios head honchos James Gunn and Peter Safran usher in their shiny-new unified vision for all things DC-related.

With "The Flash" having aired its series finale on May 24, 2023, the Arrowverse...

DC fans have long held a somewhat tumultuous relationship with The CW's Arrowverse. Though many praise Arrow and The Flash's early seasons and DC's Legends of Tomorrow's miraculous transformation from lackluster to brilliant ensemble series, modern internet culture tends to dismiss the Arrowverse's reputation whenever possible. Some dislike its overly plodding story arcs or unnecessary team arguments, while others believe these shows remained on air for too long. But that dismissiveness masks a reluctance to admit the obvious: The CW produced a better, more coherent DC universe than Hollywood this past decade.

With The Flash's series finale approaching very soon, 2023 marks the end of the mainline Arrowverse after eleven years, six live-action superhero shows, and hundreds of episodes on network television. That remains its greatest legacy: organically building a shared comic book universe whose ambition rivaled the Marvel Cinematic Universe and kept DC afloat while the DC Extended Universe floundered.

Exclusive: 1883‘s Lamonica Garrett and Martin Sensmeier are the latest additions to the cast of the street racing action-thriller Takeover, led by Migos frontman Quavo, from Trioscope and Quality Films. The pair joins an ensemble which also includes Billy Zane and Serayah, as previously announced.

The film, currently in production in Atlanta, will implement Trioscope’s proprietary technology that blends live-action with CG, underscoring the fascination and controversy surrounding the city’s street takeovers — also known as “sideshows.”

Garrett portrays Sheriff ‘Herc’ Hitchens, public enemy #1 in the takeover community. Herc is a sadistic officer, whose life mission is to shut down the illegal racing scene and its major players — especially Guy Miller (Quavo), a recent parolee who’s attempting to rehabilitate his life when circumstances propel him back into Atlanta’s dangerous takeover scene.

Marc Guggenheim has signed with CAA for representation, Variety has learned exclusively.

Guggenheim continues to be represented by attorney Wendy Kirk at Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole Llp as well as by manager Cliff Roberts at Syndicate Entertainment.

Guggenheim is perhaps best known for his work in The CW’s so-called Arrowverse — its collection of shows based on DC Comics characters. He co-created the first of those shows, “Arrow,” along with Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg. The show ultimately aired for eight seasons and 170 episodes. Guggenheim, Berlanti, and Kreisberg, along with Phil Klemmer, then went on to create the DC show “Legends of Tomorrow,” which ran for seven seasons and 110 episodes. He also developed the animated DC series “Vixen” and served as a writer and executive producer on “Supergirl.”

Legends of Tomorrow aired its season finale last night, with episode 5×14 “Swan Thong.” Unlike its fellow Arrowverse shows, though, Legends was able to close production prior to the pandemic, so this was the conclusion to the story as intended. And it featured a major change to the status quo, as one of the show’s longest-running cast members said goodbye to the team as a series regular.

The cast member in question is Maisie Richardson-Sellers, whose character Charlie was written out in “Swan Thong.” Co-showrunner Phil Klemmer spoke to TV Line about the move following the airing of the episode, revealing that the actress’ exit has been in the planning all season. The forewarning allowed them to build up a satisfying ending for Charlie, but at the same time, leave the door open for her to return whenever she likes.

Exclusive: CW Seed, the CW’s free, ad-supported digital network, has acquired non-exclusive streaming rights to 14 series from BBC Studios.

The second-window deal will bring more than 200 episodes and 150 hours of scripted library content to Seed, which launched as an on-demand service in 2013 and will add a live, linear channel later this winter. The announcement was made today by Rick Haskins, Evp of Marketing and Digital Platforms for the CW.

Stephen Amell has officially wrapped filming Arrow, bringing an end to the Arrowverse’s involvement with the actor with whom it all began.

The man who will now always be linked to the definitive portrayal of Oliver Queen took to social media with a brief but heartfelt declaration to reveal that he had wrapped on the show, saying:

Words can’t even begin to express what Arrow has meant to me. Best 8 years of my life. The cast and crew of the show have become my family. I’m going to miss them. I’m wrapped.

With Manu Bennett’s Slade Wilson unlikely to return for Arrow‘s eighth and final season and the character now being played by Esai Morales over on DC Universe’s Titans, The CW somehow managed to have him remain in the Arrowverse in some fashion. Ingeniously enough, the Deathstroke animated series we’ve been hearing about for some time will serve that purpose.

In the tradition of Vixen, Freedom Fighters: The Ray and Constantine: City of Demons, Deathstroke: Knights and Dragons will be the next animated web series to air on The CW Seed online streaming site. No concrete premiere date has been given at the time of this writing, but the first of twelve episodes will air beginning sometime in the first quarter of 2020.

BizarroTV will be a mix of live action, animation, and puppetry bringing weirdness like Ambush Bug and Space Cabbie to DC Universe.

DC Universe announced a number of new projects at New York Comic Con, and the most stunning announcement is probably BizarroTV.

The show, named after the backwards-talking supervillain (?) from the Superman family, is planned as an anthology series that will feature a live action and animation mix with, “a showcase of experimental styles and creative voices and visions.” So...Liquid Television but for DC superheroes. That's a very different approach to take with a superhero show, but not an entirely surprising one for the streaming service that birthed the absurdist masterpiece that was Doom Patrol.

The show will feature less popular heroes like Ambush Bug (imagine Deadpool with the Beyonder’s powers and general temperament), Space Cabbie (exactly what it says on the label), the Creeper,...
