Exclusive: Sony has preemptively closed a deal for film rights to Grady Hendrix’s short story “Ankle Snatcher,” tapping Hendrix to adapt it for the screen, sources tell Deadline. Hendrix is also set to produce alongside Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Tony Shaw, as well as Aperture Entertainment’s Adam Goldworm.
The first short story Hendrix has taken to market, after setting up numerous novels and original screenplays for adaptation, “Ankle Snatcher” was released in September 2023 as part of Amazon Original Stories’ Creature Feature collection comprised of six original stories written by New York Times bestselling authors, the others being Joe Hill, Josh Malerman, Paul Tremblay, Jason Mott, and Chandler Baker.
Hendrix’s story follows Marcus, who grew up believing his father killed his mother — then blamed it on the boogeyman under the bed. Always leave the lights on, his father warned, or the boogeyman will get you.

Best-selling horror author Grady Hendrix’s latest novel, How to Sell a Haunted House, was released earlier this year, and an adaptation is already on the way.
Legendary Entertainment won movie rights, per Variety, and tapped Coming Home in the Dark filmmaker James Ashcroft to helm the adaptation.
If that’s not intriguing enough, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures will produce the film with Hendrix (My Best Friend’s Exorcism) and Adam Goldworm’s Aperture Entertainment. Romel Adam and Jose Cañas will oversee for Ghost House.
Hendrix will adapt his own novel for the screen.
Fans of Hendrix’s novel know this is no ordinary haunted house.
The novel’s official synopsis: “When Louise finds out her parents have died, she dreads going home. She doesn’t want to leave her daughter with her ex and fly to Charleston. She doesn’t want to deal with her family home,...

The ending to 2009’s Drag Me to Hell damn sure made good on the promise of the title, with Sam Raimi‘s return to horror suggesting that there wasn’t anything left to tell in regards to that particular story. In fact, Raimi had told Bloody Disgusting back in 2019 that the reason there was never a sequel was simply because the ending of the first movie was so definitive.
Raimi explained to us, “I don’t have a story, because in my mind the character got killed, and worse. So I didn’t know how to proceed with the sequel. Usually, for me, I’m left with a character that I really am interested [in] or a concept that really feels like it needs to continue. But this is such a definitive ending that in my mind I didn’t know where to start with a sequel.”

Fresh off last year’s box office success Terrifier 2, released in theaters by Bloody Disgusting and Cinedigm, director Damien Leone is now teasing a collaboration with producer Sam Raimi.
Leone tells Insider this week, “There is an original project I have in development with Ghost House Pictures, which is Sam Raimi’s production company.”
“So if that happens, that would be amazing,” he adds. “I’m really hoping that that could happen before Terrifier 3, or it might happen right after, we’ll see.”
Back up a second… Terrifier 3?! Yes, Leone is planning on bringing Art the Clown and Sienna back for at least one more movie, which he’s currently writing as you’re reading this.
“I am writing Terrifier 3 as we speak,” Leone tells the site. “I definitely want to make at least one more. There may be two to tell this story and tackle all the ideas...

Pitched as a “reimagining” of the cult horror classic, Sony is starting to piece together their remake of The Grudge, and from everything we’ve been hearing, we’re beginning to get a bit excited about it.
For those who haven’t been keeping up, Nicolas Pesce is directing from his own script, and in a recent interview with Dread Central, writer Jeff Buhler had nothing but praise to offer up for the filmmaker, telling the outlet that Pesce is bringing his own vision to the project.
“He’s really brought his vision to it, and it’s really become his movie. He’s an auteur, and his films are so very specific and beautiful, and that’s what he is bringing to the table.”
The Grudge is also bolstered by some serious film pedigree behind the scenes, given Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert have agreed to produce the movie on behalf of Ghost House.

As it gets ready to head into production next month, Sony’s remake of The Grudge is beginning to firm up its cast.
According to Deadline, the studio’s now added “two-time Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver, Betty Gilpin, star of the Netflix series Glow, William Sadler, and Frankie Faison.” They’ll join Andrea Riseborough, Demian Bichir, John Cho and Lin Shaye, making for a pretty strong line-up of talent.

If that banner sounds familiar, it should; Ghost House last collaborated with Good Universe and Sony for Fede Alvarez’s spooky domestic thriller Don’t Breathe, so their involvement certainly bodes well here.

The Grudge reboot gets a release date – I’m not sure that anyone was really clamoring for a reboot of the Japanese ghost series The Grudge, which was already Americanized once back in 2004 (above), but we're getting one anyway. Sam Raimi and Bob Tapert are producing the new iteration for Ghost House and the feature will hit theaters on August 16, 2019. That release date is interesting -- if only because it's still in the summer window, where you don't find a ton of horror films -- but it's still in mid-August, a time when most of the big movies have already rampaged through the box office. I'm not sure whether this means Ghost House is expecting the film to do really well or what, but the recent release of Rings, which barely earned...

We know what you’ll be doing next summer.
Sure, most moviegoers will be flocking to see the likes of Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, The Lion King and The Terminator in their droves, but for horror fans, 2019 will herald the frankly unmissable reboot of The Grudge, the Japanese cult classic that initially made the journey West in 2004.
It spawned two sequels of its own, though Hollywood’s Grudge series soon began to suffer from a case of diminishing returns. A back-to-basics reboot was in order, then, and sure enough, Ghost House Pictures has slated its rendition of The Grudge for a release on August 16th, 2019. So like we said, we know what you’ll be doing next summer: cowering beneath the cinema seat in front of you as the ancient cinematic curse begins to take hold.

From one horror series to the next, Insidious actress Lin Shaye has signed on for The Grudge reboot over at Sony.
Variety has the scoop, revealing that the 74-year-old scream queen, who has dabbled in the Amityville and Nightmare on Elm Street franchises over the years, now joins a cast comprised of Andrea Riseborough, John Cho and Demian Bichir, who is perhaps best known for his recent turn in Ridley Scott’s prequel-sequel, Alien: Covenant.
Pitched as a “reimagining” of the cult horror classic, we understand Nicolas Pesce is directing from his own script. The Grudge is also bolstered by some serious film pedigree behind the scenes, given Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert have agreed to produce the movie on behalf of Ghost House. If that banner sounds familiar, it should; Ghost House last collaborated with Good Universe and Sony for Fede Alvarez’s spooky domestic thriller Don’t Breathe,...

Just in case you didn't know, Sony Pictures is developing a remake of the horror film The Grudge. According to Variety, Demian Bichir (Hateful Eight) and Andrea Riseborough (Oblivion) have been cast in the movie.
Sam Raimi is producing the movie through his Ghost House production company and it will be directed by Nicolas Pesce from a script that he wrote. I don't know why this movie is being remade again, I guess they feel there is still some life in the franchise. Raimi is excited about it though! He said this in a statement:
"We are so excited about this new adaptation. We went back to the original source material to deliver a relentless supernatural thrill ride that explores the horrors of American suburbia."
Who knows, maybe this Grudge remake will actually be a good and scary, but it's hard to be excited because of the fact that it's just another remake.

Let me paint you a story. I'm a writer for Geektyrant.com. It's late, but I know I want to get some articles written and help contribute. I find a trailer for a new movie called Ghost House. Cool! I like scary movies! How bad can it be? Well, Since watching the trailer, I have turned on all my lights and have moved to a place where I can run out of my house quickly if needs be, and no, I don't plan on going to sleep anytime soon. Like Ever.
The movie looks terrifying. Maybe because it's late, maybe because the monster in this has a thing for jump scares, maybe it's this new anti-stress medicine I'm on. Maybe it's you. But this thing has given me the hebejebes.
It starts kinda scary with girl running through a street. Fine. Creepy lady comes for her and it's creepy, but...

"This vacation is going to be so amazing!" Oh, if only they knew... Vertical Entertainment has unveiled an official trailer for a horror thriller titled Ghost House, from filmmaker Rich Ragsdale. We haven't heard much about this, but it looks like your standard haunted house plus one super angry ghost movie, with the increasingly common horror trope of idiot white tourists in a foreign country making a fool of themselves and provoking evil spirits. Ghost House stars Scout Taylor-Compton, James Landry Hébert, Mark Boone Junior, Michael S. New, Elana Krausz, and Kevin Ragsdale. This definitely does look scary, although quite predictable, but maybe there's some solid thrills in it. Worth a watch if you're a horror fan. Here's the first official trailer (+ teaser poster) for Rich Ragsdale's Ghost House, direct from YouTube: A couple goes on an adventurous vacation to Thailand only to find themselves haunted by a malevolent...

Two clueless American tourists on a visit to Thailand fall victim to a vengeful demon in Ghost House, a discordantly derivative attempt at amalgamating divergent horror cliches and unrelated cultural traditions. Familiar themes of supernatural possession and murderous intent, along with a competently assembled trailer, may be enough to lure the unsuspecting into theaters, but late-night streamer surfing is likely to yield a more sizable audience.

In addition to preserving heart-stirring memories, cameras can capture some seriously creepy things (just ask Greg and his friends from R.L. Stine's Say Cheese and Die!), and in the new horror movie Ghost House, starring Scout Taylor-Compton, a woman discovers that she's the subject of her own lens in a chilling, exclusive clip that we've been provided with as a special treat for Daily Dead readers.
"A young American couple, lost in the Thai countryside, find themselves haunted by an evil spirit. Desperate for a solution, the couple spirals deeper into a surreal supernatural world leading them into a frenzied, terrifying confrontation with pure evil."
Directed by Rich Ragsdale from a screenplay by Kevin O’Sullivan and Jason Chase Tyrrell, Ghost House stars James Landry Hébert, Scout Taylor Compton, and Mark Boone Junior. Vertical Entertainment will release the film in theaters on August 25th. To learn more, visit the film's official Facebook page.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by the film's publicity arm. Tagline: "She Will Never Let You Go." Director: Rich Ragsdale. Writers: Kevin O'Sullivan, Jason Chase Tyrrell, Rich Ragsdale, Kevin Ragsdale. Cast: Scout Taylor-Compton, James Landry Hébert and Mark Boone Junior. Ghost House is a film from Thailand. Developed by director Rich Ragsdale and a group of writers, this indie horror film tackles the myth of the spirit house. Two travellers don't heed the local warnings. Then, a ghost haunts Jim (James Landry Hébert) and Julie (Scout Taylor-Compton), through most of the film. The film looks great. The filmmakers have really utilized the Thai settings and they are affective. There are other great visuals, though. The fiery ghost-witch also looks spectacular onscreen. Often associated with fire, this villain lights up the screen. Also, this viewer wondered if an older Christian myth, involving Adam and Eve, influenced the story.

Tagline: "She Will Never Let You Go." Ghost House is a supernatural thriller. Shot in Bangkok Thailand, Vertical Entertainment will release this feature, in theatres. The film was directed by long time composer Rich Ragsdale, from a script developed by Kevin O’Sullivan and Jason Chase Tyrrell. The story deals with a curse and a haunting spirit. Loosely based on Thai mythology, the curse must be passed to another - in order to escape a growing evil. Ghost House stars: James Landry Hébert (Looper, 2012), Scout Taylor Compton and Mark Boone Junior. A trailer for the film was released earlier this week (hosted below). And now, new stills are available and can be found here. The trailer is an interesting one. It shows a newly engaged couple on holiday. They meet up with another duo of travellers and they are taken to a graveyard. Here, it is obvious that the new friends have malicious intent.
