Brilliant bits
MarleyStreet10 September 2021
I can't stress enough how misleading the other reviews are... This episode is average in the first 6 minutes until the writing turns brilliant. Characters are throwing back and forth witty bits and comebacks. The cutaways feel natural. Good editing meets good timing and the episode becomes outrageously funny. Enjoy "Quagmire's Mom" now and thank me later..

One of the few duds of the latter day seasons.

One of the few FG episodes I do not like.

The fragmented nature of Family means there is usually something to like, in this case the intro-plot in which Peter fulfils a new persona inspired by his new name (Xavier). it's so clever how the FG writers suggest these character types and cultures you actually sort of recognise. They feel familiar somehow and you don't know who you're making fun of, you just want to go along with them.

The rest of the episode is kind of painful. Not in the good way like "Encyclopedia Griffin" but in a sickly, desperate kind of way. I guess it hits a raw nerve with me as what happened to Quagmire could happen to anyone sex positive. Quagmire is an awful person, I understand that. He is more than the lecher we saw in the first seasons, he is a rapist.

But still, that doesn't carry over to this episode. What happened to him could happen to anybody and he now has to face his whole life being torn away from him for such a bogus reason.

Yeah it's all status quo in the end but the unfunny lifetime special that is his Mother arriving and coming through to him and all the excruciating moments in course are just judged badly.

Unoriginal
leeseyboy511 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The first half of this episode revolved around Peter finding out his name was Justin, which then makes him act like a totally different person, making him more egotistical and cocky. I find this to be too similar to an episode of "The Amazing World Of Gumball", called The Name (aired July 2014), where Gumball finds out his actual name is Zach, and also starts acting like a egotistical jock. Both stories end in the same way, with the character going to city hall to legally change their name back and stop them acting cocky. I felt like this was too similar to the episode of Amazing World of Gumball, and just seems plain unoriginal, more-so than Family Guy already is. The second half of the episode got the story which the episode was titled for. We only see quagmires mom for less than 10 minutes, and already we need to develop a strong feeling for her, which seems idiotic, especially since her 'reformed' self only lasts 2 minutes, before she returns to being a sex addict. As a long fan of Family Guy, I feel disheartened that it has stooped a new low, and needs to return to coming up with semi-original ideas.

Turned out bad, but started out funny. Also, why did it take 13 seasons for Joe to arrest Quagmire for statutory rape?
adampkalb26 July 2018
For a bad Family Guy episode, it's more fascinating than disgusting, unlike Herpe the Love Sore. Even for what disturbing moments there are, the rest of the episode's plot isn't so mundane like Stewie is Enciente was, especially with the controversy this episode got. I'm surprised Quagmire getting arrested for statutory rape hasn't happened before this one, but I am even more surprised that this episode had 2 interesting plots where a single plot thread carries over to another story and still turned up 1 1/3 minutes short, so they needed to pad it out with Peter-I mean, Justin's karaoke phase. You wait 65 seconds for something to happen and that's enough time to take a pee break. The oddest thing about this episode is that Quagmire doesn't even appear for the first 7 minutes, and we get to the real story about Quagmire and his mom when he takes the underage girl Kira (voiced by Emily Osment) home from Justin's party.

I have also noticed that Quagmire's situation in this episode is a lot like Diamond Tiara in Crusaders of the Lost Mark. Although they are not the same kind of show, Family Guy and Friendship is Magic both have their issues with a few infamously bad episodes forgiving both protagonists and antagonists too easily, whether or not they deserve a second chance. Both of these episodes have their guilty character, when they finally get punishment, try to redeem everything they did in 1 episode by showing us that their mother raised them to be bad like them.

I suppose Crusaders of the Lost Mark is better by comparison, except I was still kind of disappointed with how the Crusaders got their marks, which ignored what they didn't realize they were talented at in The Show Stoppers, and what's worse, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon didn't even appear in any episodes after Crusader's of the Lost Mark. However, on the "bad mother backstory" comparison, Quagmire's Mom does have one leg up from Crusaders of the Lost Mark. Diamond Tiara here is a different character than the meanie she was in Ponyville Confidential, and when she stood up to her mom, DT's mom looks down on the other pony children instead of attempting to be a better mother to Diamond Tiara. However, GQ's mom has a heart because she really regrets being a bad mom to her son and helps him when he needs her. For that I can almost forgive this episode for finding statutory rape funny. All it was missing was for Quagmire to learn that statutory rape is bad and he shouldn't do it if he doesn't want to get tortured in prison. This episode certainly isn't great, but it's not soulless either. Like Brian and Stewie, Quagmire's Mom has its good heartfelt moments, but went through a lot of crab to get there.

Tittle of this episode is "Quagmire's Mom" and we see her in last 5 minutes of episode. That's just doesn't make sense. Build whole episode about Quagmire being creepier is just wasting of air time.
