Tar
Sir_watch_alot23 October 2020
Tar means 'teer' in dutch, wich is almost another word for weak. And there you have it. I was tricked into watching this movie by the good reviews. Those good reviews however, were made by people who, almost without exception, joined imdb in october 2020. The same month this movie premiered. 1+1=2. I feel cheated. In short: Movie isn't that good. I've seen worse. But most of the movies I see are way better.

Horrible! What More Can You Say?
collectorofsorts21 October 2020
This movie started out with promise. I liked the first few minutes and was waiting with anticipation to see what came next. WOW! I was totally disappointed by how much minutes 5-25 sucked! That's when I gave up and couldn't take any more of it. How did a movie with a known actor and great potential suck so badly? Your guess is as good as mine. But, I think I'm being generous giving it 3 stars.

Unknown directing & starring = distaster!
mldardar7 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this a few days after wasting time on The Wolf of Snowy Hollow, another directing effort by a relatively unknown (over-) actor. But it was a little better than this mess. Giving themselves so much (annoying) screen time turned what might've been good movies into distasterous wastes of time. Graham Greene & Timothy Bottoms were the draw. Greene played his role well, but Bottoms should've added his experience & refused to speak some of the ridiculous lines. One example: The power has gone off, so the only light are flashlights. Bottoms has been missing. When our "director"/"actor" finds him wounded, with something close behind, Bottoms calmly tells him, he needs to tell him something, then gives him a pep talk before giving him important instructions. From just after the beginning, & throughout, all the long, drawn out way to nearly the end--between amateur acting from the "supporting" cast as they display totally idiotic behavour making lame-brain choices--"director"/"actor" gives us close-ups of himself speechless, in shock. Ooh, and it has some "jumpy parts too", as another reviewer pointed out.

From now on, when I see that a movie is directed by an unknown actor who's he main star, it'll be a red flag to not even consider wasting time on.

The most over-rated movie ever !
floridamangosteen3 November 2020
This is absolutely the most over-rated movie I have encountered in the 10+ ? years I have been using this site. Horrible script, tacky direction, etc. People MUST be getting really desperate for something to watch...

Bad editing, slow and not in a good way lazy music and a plot that spends to much time sweating the small stuff instead of being focused. average student film fare

Baffled at how this has such a high rating...
shaun_couper19 November 2020
I managed to make it an hour in before I switched it off. Some of the editing is abysmal, cheesy acting and a plodding story that feels like it's never going to end. There's a scene where the main guy is audibly talking but his mouth is perfectly still. One thing it is good for is the eye candy, but that's about as nice a thing I can say about this. Don't waste your time like I did.

Nothing outstanding to be found in the tar pits...
paul_haakonsen25 October 2020
Granted, I wasn't really sure what the movie "Tar" from writers Timothy Nuttall and Aaron Wolf was going to be like. Initially I had thought it was a horror movie when I sat down to watch it. But perusing IMDb, I quickly discovered that the movie was labeled as a mystery drama. Already there, some of the air deflated from the balloon.

Sure, while "Tar" is watchable, it just wasn't a particularly entertaining or enjoyable movie. Why? Well, simply put because far too little of any worth or interest happened throughout the course of the movie with director Aaron Wolf at the helm. The events that took place throughout the movie just weren't sufficient enough to sustain the movie, nor really keep it afloat as it was sinking due to the prolonged and slow pacing of the story.

And the movie's synopsis brandish a 'mysterious creature'. Just where in the movie was that? All I saw was a man in rags with tar smeared on him. And the face mask or make-up made him look more like an orc from "The Lord of the Rings" than it made him look like a mysterious creature.

As for the special effects in the movie, well those were actually adequate. Well, aside from the creature design, which was just atrocious.

While I managed to sit through the entire course of "Tar", it was a slow paced journey, where I was losing interest a couple of times along the way. But I stuck with it.

The acting in the movie was adequate, taking into consideration the limitation of script and lack of interesting characters. It was actually a nice touch to have Graham Greene in the movie, because he definitely added something worthwhile with his performance.

All in all, "Tar" is not just an outstanding or memorable movie. I am rating it a generous four out of ten stars. And this is hardly the type of movie that will have you returning to watch it a second time, as the movie's storyline and script is just too simplistic and can't sustain more than a single viewing.

Fun Ride
staceyklien22 October 2020
Was not sure what to expect, but the movie was a legit fun adventure creature feature. Reminded me of a throw back movie. Had a good time watching. Nothing too gory, which I prefer.

Kinda disjointed.
talesofpotentia31 March 2021
I watched this because I like creature features. There was certain parts that didn't make sense to me but the movie wasn't too terrible. It doesn't take much to entertain me creature feature wise and I wasn't expecting something on par with Jurassic Park or whatever.

The cast was strange but all the women were pretty. I found the part where the assistant was eyeing up Ms. Diana funny but that was really where most of the comedy was in parts here and there in the movie.

The cast was a bit moronic though...they gave me Alien Covenant cast with equal amounts of stupidity with the things they did.

I hope they remake this with a more horror angle. The monster idea was different but it just wasn't creature feature enough for me but and it moved slow. It wasn't gory and that was fine. I'm okay with none gory films.

Truly the worst. Don't waste your time.
picassovegas-912-7241506 December 2020
This movie is horrible. The star of the film acted like a 13 year old child angry at his father. The fat guy was the unfunny and the worst actor I've seen. He must be related to someone. The script was poorly written. Why was the main character trying to have sex?

Very Bad Acting

Mixed Bag
vm04k20 October 2021
There was a lot to take from this and I don't know where to go first. I did enjoy the movie, it was a fun plot and when I found out it wasn't a horror film it made more sense. There were many jokes though that did not land and I always think indie directors need to pick or choose. Direct or act. Don't do both.

Viewer beware
takato052420 March 2021
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: when the director and or writer is also in the movie, especially as the lead, the movie is going to be terrible. And this movie delivered on every terrible note possible. Was it a comedy? Sci-fi? Thriller? It didn't know. And neither did the director, who was also the writer, and the main character. What a talentless hack. I won't go into the details, but don't waste your time.

Absolutely Terrible Movie
chips-166951 March 2021
As I'm writing this, the rating is 6.1 with 1435 submissions. How is that even possible? This movie is absolute rubbish. It should not be rated higher than a 2-3 and it's current rating is casting serious doubt on the integrity of the rating system. Usually when a dreck movie like this has an artificially high rating is because there's only like 20 votes and it's probably the cast and crew. This is pretty easy to sniff out. But 1435 votes and this is a 6.1??? Surely this is a glitch of some sort.

Don't Go Into the Tar Pits
nogodnomasters12 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The Greenwood Family Computer repair is being evicted from their office and are in the final day of moving. They disturb the tar monster with their noise and light and must fight him off. Includes horror film icon Tiffany Shepis and eye-candy Nicole Alexandra Shipley.

They appear to have all the elements but the characters were bland. Zach's relationship with his father? Who cares? Lousy flashbacks. A wasted role for Tiffany Shepis. Nicole Alexandra Shipley never takes a shower.

Guide: F-word. Near sex. No nudity.

So glad I didn't pay for this..
ife-416759 March 2021
I had this in my watchlist for a while. I knew it wouldn't be great, but I thought it was an interesting concept. Wow it was bad. SO bad. There's a couple minutes at the end where it seems like it was making fun of itself and if the entire movie had done that it might've been an ok campy horror comedy but wow it's terrible. The only slightly believable actors are the Dad and the "hippie" girl. Bad writing, bad script, and bad acting. There are so many times you could ask why something happened but honestly I don't care!

Absolutely 100% Terrible
pipo-4 March 2021
Don't believe the reviews, I watched this so you don't have to.

I love some low budget movies but this one is just absolutely bad, it had a terrible script, terrible acting, terrible music and horrible filming (shaky cam, close ups, dark, flashlight in camera whole movie).

This movie was filmed almost entirely inside a dark office building with moronic characters, if you find it entertaining to watch annoying grownups sneak room to room then this movie is for you.

This movie doesn't even show the tar pits I mean wtf, arrrrg this movie made me so angry, thanks for wasting 2 hours of my life.

S-K-I-P.

Creatures are Alive Again!
dba-0366223 October 2020
This is a new age version of the old school "Creature from the Blue Lagoon" esque genre. Fun adventure through what lerks beneath the La Brea Tar Pits. Great cast, with some real scream queens in it. Overall fun film, definitely recommend.

Too many odious things to get onboard for a silly, low budget horror
leesimon-2635724 February 2021
The acting is bad. The cast is weak. The jokes are terrible. The script is stupid. It is shot poorly, and even the makeup and effects were way below sub-par. And that is just in the first 7 minutes. They tried SO hard to build tension and suspense, and all of it falls flat. One of the major issues with this film is that they attempt to play certain situations as serious and tense, and none of them are. As for the jokes, they are of this caliber:

-Calling reading palms a "handjob," so one character can say she gave handjobs to everyone in the office -A busty brunette saying she is very "anal ...(long pause) about packing." -The same busty brunette working at DD Accounting -A jewish lawyer character straight out of a racist, Nazi propaganda cartoon from the 1930s. I'll leave it at that for the jokes, a those are the ones that happen in the first 10 minutes of the movie. But please believe that none of them land. Ever.

The whole movie is punctuated by a close-up, bad makeup, protagonist who monologues the viewer through the movie's events. Give this guy a supporting role in a "dude bro" comedy and I'm sure he'll do fine. In this, he is absolutely incapable of carrying this movie.

In order to avoid spoiling anything past the first 15 minutes, I'll just say about the premise that having been given a 2 week notice to vacate a business building, it is ridiculous that the tenants would wait until the evening of the last day to start packing paperwork and move.

The soundtrack and the way that the whole movie pauses for musical montages every time they feature a song is very amateurish.

This movie might have risen to a 2 or *maybe* a 3 (for Graham Greene and Max Perlich alone.) But the racist Jewish character drops this to the unwatchable level.

Props to Tres Delincuentes who make an appearance on this soundtrack.

By the middle of the movie I was rooting for the creature to kill the characters. I mean, the script was horrid.

Not "Tar"... "Turd".
tmccull5225 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So, our movie opens with a single, solitary member of a road construction crew in the Greater Los Angeles area, at night. There is virtually no one else around... on a road construction crew... in Los Angeles... at night. No co-workers. No pedestrians passing by. No cars. No nightlife whatsoever, in Los Angeles. Yep. Unh hunh.

This lone construction worker opens a hole, a pit... working by himself... at night... with potentially dangerous equipment... violating God only knows how many OSHA regulations... with virtually no one else around. He stands there, and looks into the pit, and then around for someone... anyone... else. But, he's alone, at night, in Los Angeles. He hears ominous growling. Does he move away from the dangerous noise?

No. He looks around, and seeing that there is virtually no one else around to help him if the excrement hits the fan, he hunters down closer to the edge of the pit to see what it is that's growling ominously at him. As he squats down and peers into the abysmal darkness of the pit, the ominously growling creature kills him.

I stopped watching after that.

A unique, original monster.
drewcornish8916 October 2021
This movie is flawed... bad acting, a mix of bad cgi with decent practical effects, and the storyline is a bit of a mess. But, it does give us a unique, original, interesting monster. If you're a fan of monsters you might appreciate it for the effort. I've seen better, but I've also seen worse.
