A interesting look at the past from an alternate persopective

Personally I really enjoyed this movie and would love to actually see a longer series that could take more time and delve into building the relationship between the two and take more time tackling their families and societies reaction to their relationship. As you can probably tell from above, I found it slightly too short but I enjoyed the concept and the beautiful cinematography of the outskirta areas of the Free State.

Under-rated film.

A fascinating, low-budget insight into the horrors of apartheid , with echoes of a Romeo and Juliet romance.

The storyline is convincing and gripping, conveying how difficult life was for mixed-race couples. Most of the characters are lovable.

We really enjoyed it!

I need to see the rest!

I was flying from South Africa back to my side of the world and this movie was on. I only got to watch about half of it before landing. Now I am searching for where to buy a copy or download one online. Of course every time I click anything related to FREE STATE, I get references to FREE STATE OF JONES, which is a great movie itself but it is not this!

How does one get a copy of this South African film when in the USA? I thought it was well made and a great story and I like that sort of drama. Some of the acting was a bit slow in reaction but that's OK. The story and the scenery were awesome.

If anyone has any ideas I am game! thanks

A flou representation of interracial love under apartheid
garyjazz-997745 October 2023
I only recently came across this film and watched for interest sake.

In Afrikaans the word we would use to describe it is "flou" pronounced flow it simply means weak, but flou means extra weak!

Set in 1979 the film seems to have arrived from a dimension where the political activity of 1976 never happened.

The supposed love story is flimsy and trying to get the security police involved falls just as flat.

If we had encountered such polite police in those times it would have surprised us.

There have been far better portrayals of the immorality act that really hit home.

At times it feels as if all interest in making the film was lost!

Beautiful! Looking forward to see more films like these

I just watched this movie last night as I was waiting for this movie to be released for two months. And it is a very touching story of a forbidden romance. The cinematography is indeed, very good as well as the costumes. I felt as if I was in 1979, South Africa, speaking from someone who is living in SA and had parents living in those times. The authenticity is there as it was simple times back then. The opening scenes, some of the performances, and screenplay could be better. But I think the film succeeds in its authenticity, cinematography, the climax, and the story. I can still recall the secret house at the lake where they escaped to, just so that they can get to know each other more. A connection was built between them, based on their similarities. I would have liked to see more characterization between them if possible, but that could've extended the screen time. Overall, this is a great movie with beautiful themes and story. I would definitely like to see more movies like this, as it is not very common. And I'll be waiting for the video to come out, to purchase a copy!
