pretty funny british comedy
LetsReviewThat2630 October 2022
This is one of the better british comedy movies iv'e seen in recent time. It was pretty good. It had an interesting plot that we haven't actually seen before as far as I can tell. The tenents of a highrise get to gether to kill off the loan shark thats making their lives miserable. Its played out for laughs in areas but at its core its a dark comedy. Theres a little bit of character development here and there with a few of the tenants. Some parts made me laugh but really I was watching it for the actual plot. The cast all did well with their characters, including a young michelle keegan. Overall pretty good.

Silly, but not funny and inconsistent!
MIVANABBE5 October 2018
Silly, but not funny and inconsistent, really says it all! Shambolic with no original ideas. Locations (council block beautiful gardens and brand new empty garden shed) not inkeeping with the story settings and lack of blood after the crime, all are too noticeable as the plot is weak and does not grasp..... Not a comedy, looks amateurish/student production. PS There were 5 (out of 9 only votes) giving this film "full marks" i.e. 10 Stars.......!!!???? Since my vote 4 **** (+ this review) there is a 6th 10 Stars rating. Those can only come from people with a vested interest! No-one with genuine unbiased view/taste can rate this film a 10.

Not funny, just a pathetic attempt at comedy.
Antiguan-Princess18 July 2020
Being a fan of UK northern comedies such as Brassic and the Royle Family I wondered why I had never heard of this. It had a line up of actors that I'd previously seen in high rated comedy series so I was keen to give it a go. I now realise why I had not heard of it. Diabolical!! Please do not waste your time.

Shameless in Salford
iainearle-556948 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
If you enjoyed Shameless then this will be right up your street.

Sex, drugs, gritty violence, dark humour and slapstick are very much order of the day here.

I enjoyed it probably more than most, due to the fact I was living in one of the tower blocks where it was filmed.

I know the area, the people, the life very well.

The characters were spot on. Anyone who knows that part of Salford know's the Loan Shark, the single mum, the retired Boxer, the weird lad, the madhead minicab driver, the young couple punting drugs out of their kitchen.

It ain't A Taste of Honey by any stretch, but def a decent 80 odd mins of fun.

Nothing to do with The Smiths
fostrhod15 November 2022
Strangeways Here We Come.

A group of oppressed Manchester scallies in a high rise, rise up to get their own back on the loan shark whose been making all their life's a misery. Featuring a b list of soap actors and would be comics, it's a poor attempt at either social realism of a comedy. Films that cater to drug taking audience always come across awkward and embarrassing, like living in this level of destitute of poverty is a right laugh NOT Filmed around Salford, the boys club features prominently, alas that where The Smiths comparisons end there. I'd love to have heard a snippet of The Smiths or Morrissey. It's a shocker, but in its defence, I did want to see how the film ended mainly to see if it improved..,,,

Funny dark comedy.
TomFarrell6314 January 2024
I know the area this was filmed in very well, and the filmmakers got it down to a tee.

This isn't a film for all, with drug taking being a major part of it, a little violence, but it hits the spot so often with its comedy, I laughed out loud quite a few times.

All the actors involved give it their all, and appear to be having a blast.

The storyline is fresh and unique, I didn't see where it was heading until quite a way in.

Knocked a few points off as there was a part near the end that just didn't make sense or ring true, and this spoilt the ending of the film a little for me.

If you're broadminded though, I'd recommend a viewing of this, and if you live in Pendleton, you must see it!

Spotted a few familiar mancuians who had been on Corry and obviously doing terrible since they left the show.

How and why this rubbish was made is beyond me!!!

Marmite film that I enjoyed.

A comedy masterpiece it is not, but if you like daft comedy, this is a film you'd enjoy.

Yes, the whole thing is daft, but it's not trying to be anything other than what it is! There's some really dark, humorous moments in there and it's an easy watch.

Some really good performances too set against an unconvincing backdrop. It's more like a play so the authenticity of the scenes and cinematography aren't as important in this film in my opinion. It's a bit like This is England meets Shameless, crossed with Sean of the Dead.

Don't expect Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, just enjoy it for what it is. Some will love it, some will hate it.

Oh dear

Terrible waste of time and effort.

Kept waiting for it to get going, it was so disjointed and 'jerky'.

Didn't care about any of the characters at all; not a bit of charisma between them, and couldn't pick out a single bit of decent acting.

Michelle Keegan is a really good actor, but not in this.

Had great potential, but fell way short of the mark; I'm also from Salford - so really wanted to like it - but I'd really recommend avoiding at all costs.

I'm wondering if some of the other reviewers on here actually watched the same film that I did.

90+ minutes of my life that I will never get back....

Funny inner city film set in a tower block
sgoddard-1313028 December 2018
A very funny film at times but does contain some violance and referance to drug taking. Not for all the family. More of a TV movie. Follows the lives of some very different charactors of a Manchester (England) council high rise block . Some more dysfunctional then others who try to make a stand against a local loan shark.

I really enjoyed this

Yes its daft, its a comedy after all, but its funny with great characters. I'm not sure why it's got such bad ratings. Enjoyable British comedy for fans of Shameless. Give it a go.

Daft but funny
mark-0648814 December 2021
It is what it is, daft comedy that fills 90 minutes.

Easy to watch, yes predictable but that doesn't mean it's not entertaining.

Great characters make the story funny.

Brilliant

Loved this film, easy to watch, very believable and totally down to earth and well cast. Set in gritty Salford it does show ordinary lives and a story that could happen. Hilarious.

Beltin' Ar Kid!!!!
wozrokka21 January 2023
A must see for Mancs, especially, some further afield may struggle with this very funny, but regional black comedy. Superbly cast, the dialogues are authentic, which may hinder viewers abroad, ( may need subtitles! ). But it runs at hilarious pace, with wacky characters, in a deprived working class backdrop of Salford, it's a great portrayal of Mancunian spirit, humour, and support in the face of hardship. Tenants of a high rise block of flats are all made miserable by a viscious loan shark, and in desperation hatch a plot, with tawdry scenes accurately depicting social ills of our times, it deals with the matter with smart comedic interplays, frankly bizarre actions and bubbles with foul mouthed humour\\\\\1 Not for the easily offended! Great fun, from start to finish. Highly recommended.
