Like any workplace, tensions can get pretty high on Hollywood sets. Actors and crew members are often working long hours day after day to create something that is the singular vision of one person: the director. When that vision isn't clear enough for everyone to see, or that director is maybe not a healthy collaborator, things can come to a head very quickly. That's why there's a stereotype of directors being very controlling, argumentative, and narcissistic, given that, in the case of most studio films, there's a lot of responsibility on their shoulders to make a good film.
We've all heard stories about famous actors who refuse to work with each other, despite the on-screen chemistry their characters displayed. However, fewer people know the dirty details about actors who hated working with certain directors, whether it be a matter of personalities clashing, actors not being invested in the project, or...

Opening in the final weeks of an election cycle that eventually saw its subject Donald Trump re-elected as President of the United States, Ali Abbasi’s “The Apprentice” was one of 2024’s most controversial films. It became a political lightning rod to the point that Sebastian Stan, who played Trump in the 1980s-set film, reportedly couldn’t find a fellow actor willing to discuss it for Variety’s Actors on Actors series. But even if some people avoided the film, Stan is confident that Trump is a fan of it.
In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Sebastian Stan speculated that the president has repeatedly watched “The Apprentice,” suggesting that the film’s critical tone might be lost on the former real estate mogul.
“I would put money down he’s seen it 100 fucking times, of course, because he’s a narcissist,” Stan said. “And I bet you there’s...

Candace Owens is at it again after Ryan Reynolds filed for dismissal from the $400 million lawsuit against him, Blake Lively, and their publicist Leslie Slone. Amid his plea to be removed from the lawsuit, Owens revisited Reynolds’ history of kissing fellow male Hollywood stars and incorporating gay jokes into his public appearances.

“Snow White” star Rachel Zegler says the backlash against Disney’s latest live-action remake is due to “passion” for the original film.
While Disney’s live-action re-releases have seen better days since 2019’s “The Lion King,” the “Snow White” rehash has been a particular point of contention in some circles due to Zegler’s Columbian heritage. The outrage came to a head when the “Y2K” star called the 1937 original “dated,” featuring a prince that “literally stalks” Snow White. Zegler now says she interprets the controversies as an overprotective reaction to a beloved Disney classic.
“I interpret people’s sentiments towards this film as passion,” Zegler told Vogue Mexico. “What an honor to be a part of something that people feel so passionately about. We’re not always going to agree with everyone who surrounds us and all we can do is our best.” (Quotes were independently translated from Spanish...

During this year's Variety's Actors on Actors series, Academy Award-nominee Mikey Madison confessed to "The Last Showgirl" star Pamela Anderson (a woman with a history of having been exploited by the fame machine) that she had declined to use an intimacy coordinator for "Anora," despite the explicit nature of the film and her character. This situation kicked up a flurry of discourse, with multiple intimacy coordinators speaking with Variety to weigh in on the situation. To be clear, Madison said that the "sex shots" in "Anora" were "a very positive experience" for her. However, the water-cooler conversations that followed showed that the general public still doesn't fully understand what it is that an intimacy coordinator does.
In the wake of Hollywood mega-producer Harvey Weinstein's long overdue reckoning for his history of sexually harassing, abusing, and intimidating women, there was an upswing in conversations about the systemic issue of on-set safety.

Sebastian Stan's performance in The Apprentice seems to finally be getting the recognition it deserves. After giving two of the best performances in 2024 (the other in A24's A Different Man), Stan has picked up several awards nods for his role in Ali Abbasi's biopic, including a Best Actor nomination at the 2025 Oscars – a surprising turn of events for a movie that almost didn't make it to release, and a surprising development for Stan, who recalls being told that he'd never win anything for The Apprentice.
Stan is cleaning up this awards season, though it hasn't been an easy path for the actor. There have been very public battles to get the Donald Trump biopic a distributor, as well as legal battles that almost stopped the movie from getting released. What's more, it was reported that Stan was forced to opt out of Variety's Actors on Actors series...

One of the very few pleasures of this year’s awards season has been Kieran Culkin taking the piss out of, well, the spectacle that is the awards season while still seeming flattered to have been invited to the party. That’s a tricky tightrope walk, and Culkin is a pro at it. Both in his roles and his life, he’s shown that he’s better than most at playing on the line between charisma and awkwardness. It’s certainly what makes his performances feel so human.
That balancing act was more than abundant in his episode opposite Colman Domingo for Variety Studio: Actors on Actors, the highlight of which was a spirited conversation between the actors about the relevance of astrology. Culkin is as thoroughly alive to Domingo as he is on screen opposite Jesse Eisenberg in A Real Pain, which would be easy to dismiss as a...

Benedict Cumberbatch recently participated in Variety’s “Know Their Lives” video series and shared some regret over his controversial role in Ben Stiller’s “Zoolander 2.” The “Doctor Strange” actor played a non-binary fashion model named All in the comedy sequel, which was an infamous box office flop in 2016 with just $28 million at the domestic box office.
“I’ve had to apologize for that quite a lot. It’s a difficult one to talk about,” Cumberbatch said about playing a non-binary role. “I love that group of people and it was the chance to sort of be part of something that the first time around was iconic and I was a huge fan of. But it got complicated and it got misunderstood and I upset people. I respect that, so I probably wouldn’t do that again now.”

Mark Ruffalo’s Role Prep (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Mark Ruffalo had a Poor Things panic moment. The 56-year-old actor was absolutely not feeling his age when it came to his sex scenes with Emma Stone in the quirky, science-fantasy flick. “I didn’t know if I could pull this off,” Ruffalo confessed in a recent interview, adding that he wondered, “Am I too old to be doing that kind of stuff? Does anyone want to see that?”
Cue the anxiety about baring it all. The Avengers star admitted he spent some time in doubt, worrying about how fans would react to his role as Duncan Wedderburn alongside Stone’s Bella Baxter. But his biggest worry? Hollywood’s prude phase. “Sexuality is so deeply connected to the psychology of a character,” Ruffalo shared, pointing out that it should be explored through the character, rather than shying away from it.

If you don’t watch Marvel movies, then you don’t know Bucky Barnes, which means you only know Sebastian Stan as the also-indie actor behind films like 2024’s “A Different Man” and “The Apprentice.” Both movies have put him in the awards race, and possibly the Oscar running, especially after his grimly funny, pathos-spiked turn as a self-loathing, out-of-options actor with neurofibromatosis in Aaron Schimberg’s “A Different Man” won him a surprise Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. That night, he was also nominated for Best Actor in a Drama for “The Apprentice,” where he plays a ’70s New York-era Donald Trump.
Had scheduling gone a different path, he would’ve starred in Brady Corbet’s also-Oscar-contending “The Brutalist,” but Stan had plenty on his plate last year and into this one, setting him up for his biggest awards season run yet. His transformative...

When Sebastian Stan signed up for playing the role of Donald Trump, he knew that he would have to face the music. After all, making a movie that portrays a candidate who is in the running for election as the President in a bad light is likely to have consequences.

In the two decades since wrapping up his 10-season run as neurotic paleontologist Ross Geller on the beloved NBC sitcom “Friends,” David Schwimmer has branched out across genres and mediums.
Following the series finale of “Friends” in 2004, Schwimmer, unlike his costars, decided to move from Los Angeles back to his native New York City, and briefly stepped away from the spotlight. He has spent the intervening years chasing his own creative pursuits: returning to his first love of theater and conquering the West End and Broadway stages; voicing Melman the giraffe in the “Madagascar” franchise; appearing in some niche indies; and parlaying his experience as an episodic director into helming his own features.

Jeremey Strong appeared to take aim at two former costars who have recently expressed hesitations about his acting method.
The 46-year-old Succession star has previously addressed his extreme dedication to his roles. Meanwhile, costars have dissed it over the years. One even went as far as to refer to his approach as “f-cking annoying.”
In recent interview, Jeremy‘s Succession costars Kieran Culkin and Brian Cox both had something to say about the star. Jeremy addressed his own critics in response.

Have Joe Alwyn and Paul Mescal formulated a tortured man club? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
The revelation came during a December 15 interview for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series, where the two stars, both of whom starred in TV adaptations of Sally Rooney’s emotionally charged novels, swapped thoughts on their introspective art. You know, Joe Alwyn and Paul Mescal were just a couple of sad boys trying to navigate life, love, and anxiety.
So how did these two get to the name “Tortured Man Club”? It started with a cheeky question from Mescal. “So what’s the name of the WhatsApp group that we’re in?” he asked Alwyn. To which Alwyn deadpanned, “It’s me, you—and Andrew Scott started the group.” Yeah, that Andrew Scott—the Fleabag Hot Priest himself. And according to Alwyn, Scott is practically the group’s unofficial leader, the most frequent texter, and often found messaging himself “good mornings.

Kieran Culkin has officially revived his hilarious fake feud with Pedro Pascal. The two actors went viral during last year’s awards season by throwing playful jabs at each other during various ceremonies, and now Culkin is doing it again at the 2025 Golden Globes. The “Succession” Emmy winner appeared on Variety and Entertainment Tonight’s Golden Globes red carpet pre-show when the topic of Pascal was brought up.
“Is he here tonight? Oh he’s not? Sorry, Pedro, were you not nominated this year?” Culkin asked with a laugh. “Next year. Maybe next year. When I won’t be.”
Culkin attended the 2025 Golden Globes as a nominee in the best supporting actor category for his performance in Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain,” for which he’s already won prizes this season from the New York Film Critics Circle and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

The indie hit Anora has not only topped many favorites of the year lists but has also sparked some recent conversation around something the film lacked — an intimacy coordinator. The film contains numerous sex scenes and plenty of nudity, sparking talk about why intimacy coordinators are so important when making a film or TV series. The lead actress of Anora, Mikey Madison, opted out of the inclusion of an intimacy coordinator after director Sean Baker offered. In Variety's Actors on Actors, Madison spoke with Pamela Anderson about how not including an intimacy coordinator "streamlined the process," garnering attention from professionals who think having at least one liaison on set should be a mandate on productions. In Madison's specific case, she revealed that she, Baker, and Baker's wife Samantha Quan (also a producer in the film) “would talk about different positions,” and then Baker and Quan would “demonstrate what they wanted it to look like.

Andrew Garfield knows nobody will believe him when he says he won't be in Spider-Man 4. Which means...maybe he will be? Seven years later, Garfield got to reprise his role and star alongside both Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire's versions of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home...after Garfield spent nearly a year telling the press he was not in the film.

Mikey Madison’s Anora has certainly become her defining role in the film industry. Although the actress did gain recognition for her work in 2021’s Scream, the recently released film stands as one of her more critically acclaimed projects. Playing the role of a s*x worker who is suddenly thrust into a new world full of money and love, the film was certainly an entertaining watch for many.

Considering its themes, the work is certainly more on the mature side of Hollywood, having several explicit scenes throughout its runtime. With this, one would expect an intimacy coordinator to be very active in the production of the film.
However, Madison and the director of the film, Sean Baker, decided against getting an intimacy coordinator.

Mikey Madison begins Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning drama “Anora” as a stripper who accepts thousands of dollars to be exclusive with her rich Russian client, Vanya (Mark Eidelstein) for a too-perfect week that ends with a diamond ring on her finger. But as quickly as the marriage came together, Vanya runs away while his family’s goons chase, gag and tie Ani up before forcing her to help them arrange an annulment. Needless to say, the film earns its R-rating with violence, drugs and of course, plenty of sex.

Matt Reeves’ Batman Epic Crime Saga continues to grow, with its latest chapter, The Penguin, recently wrapping up. The show focused on Oz Cobb’s rise to power after Carmine Falcone’s death in The Batman: Part I.
While fans were initially unsure about giving The Penguin his own series, those doubts disappeared once the first episode aired.
Viewers quickly praised the show for its dark, grounded tone and standout performances from Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti.
Now that the season has ended and Oz’s arc is complete, fans are naturally curious about a potential second season. With Reeves’ version of Oz proving to be such a compelling character, there’s plenty of room to dive deeper into his backstory or explore his next moves in Gotham’s criminal underworld.

Matt Reeves’ ‘Batman Epic Crime Saga’ keeps expanding, and the latest installment aired its last episode a few weeks ago- it was a show focusing on Oz Cobb’s rise to power following the death of Carmine Falcone in ‘The Batman: Part I.’
Fans were initially skeptical that The Penguin was getting his own standalone show, all such doubts were dismissed after the first episode aired.
Fans immediately started praising pretty much every aspect of the show, from its grounded and gloomy setting to performances delivered by Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti.
Now since the show ended and wrapped up Oz’s character arc, fans naturally started wondering regarding the potential second season of the show. Certainly, Reeves’ Oz is interesting enough and there’s plenty of room to expand either his origin or his criminal pursuits.

Amanda Seyfried found herself trending on social media after “Wicked” opened in theaters thanks to a viral video of her singing “Popular,” one of the musical’s most beloved songs. The video prompted widespread speculation that it was Seyfried’s audition to play Glinda, which she has now debunked in an interview with People magazine.
“I think it was during Covid. I was doing a Lancôme shoot in Long Island City. Elizabeth Stewart [was] my stylist,” Seyfried said. “I was not auditioning for ‘Wicked’ yet, but I knew it was like coming up. So I was just fucking around really, and I was like, ‘This dress is so Glinda. And Elizabeth was like, ‘Do it.’ And then she posted at some point.”
Seyfried acknowledged that “maybe it would be better if it hadn’t been posted” but stressed “it was truly just a fun, like, [behind-the-scenes] moment of my Lancôme shoot.” The...

Though Daniel Craig certainly doesn’t look back all too fondly on his time playing legendary spy James Bond, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t enjoy regaling others with tales of his experience. Speaking with Harris Dickinson for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series, Craig’s “Queer” co-star Drew Starkey shared that in working with the British actor, he was often exposed to the nitty gritty of being 007 unprompted.
“He kind of just started talking about it. He was very willing to share,” said Starkey. “I got a lot of insider trading on that, which is cool.”
But Bond wasn’t the only piece of Craig’s career history that impressed Starkey. In having to play opposite him, often in very intimate scenes, Starkey wasn’t sure if he’d be able to see past the legend in front of him, but found very quickly that he was just like any other collaborator.

Ryan Reynolds reveals the macabre Deadpool & Wolverine pitch involving a non-dcu character Disney rejected. Ryan Reynolds previously revealed there were multiple pitches for Deadpool & Wolverine, ranging from low-budget character studies to extremely unlikely blockbuster parodies. Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy, and Disney eventually settled on the ambitious plot that became the cameo-filled Deadpool & Wolverine, to the pleasure of MCU and X-Men fans.
Speaking to fellow Marvel star Andrew Garfield in an episode of Variety's "Actors on Actors", Ryan Reynolds reveals that he pitched a dark idea for Deadpool & Wolverine, where Wade Wilson somehow teamed up with the hunter who killed Bambi's mom instead of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. Of course, this pitch didn't advance too far before Disney allegedly scrapped it, arguing "We don't touch Bambi, Ryan". Check out Ryan Reynolds' full conversation with Andrew Garfield below:

Andrew Garfield reveals how he, Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and director Jon Watts designed Spider-Man: No Way Home's multiversal Spider-Men dynamics with an improvisational approach to their shared MCU story. Spider-Man: No Way Home marks the first MCU appearance for several characters, including Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Men, as well as five of their enemies. Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Men entered Spider-Man: No Way Home's plot halfway through, and they became brother-like figures for Tom Holland's Peter Parker by Spider-Man: No Way Home's ending, before they returned to their original timelines.

Ryan Reynolds recalls how scary it was to film the Deadpool & Wolverine scene where Hugh Jackman's Wolverine tears down Wade Wilson. In Deadpool & Wolverine, Wolverine barely tolerates Deadpool's overzealous personality and sense of humor, holding his anger back until Deadpool reveals that he isn't sure they can save Wolverine's timeline "Earth-10005". Wolverine's reaction is one of the highlights not only of Deadpool & Wolverine, but also of Hugh Jackman's entire Wolverine career, as Wolverine leaves Deadpool speechless with his deeply personal insults.

Reynolds argues that Wolverine's verbal fight with Deadpool in Deadpool & Wolverine was especially daunting, as "he's saying more in that one monologue than he says in an entire movie typically". The future of Deadpool in the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains uncertain for the time being. What we do know is that we're probably going to see Ryan Reynolds suit up as Wade Wilson again in the future, one way or another. That's because "Deadpool & Wolverine" became the biggest R-rated movie ever this year, taking in more than $1.3 billion worldwide. It's second only to "Inside Out 2" globally this year. So yes, Disney and Marvel will back up the money truck to get him back. But what shape will that take?
Reynolds has some ideas. He recently sat down with Andrew Garfield for an interview as part of Variety's "Actors on Actors" series. Garfield is no stranger to Marvel either, having appeared in "The Amazing Spider-Man" films before that franchise flamed out, and later finding redemption in "Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Variety’s annual Actors on Actors series is usually a great opportunity to hear some of our favorite stars chat about the craft. But this year has been more problematic that ever before. First Sebastian Stan said he couldn’t participate because nobody wanted to talk politics; now, Ryan Reynolds has been forced to defend an entire genre because of some outcry over the drama over comedy hierarchy.
Ryan Reynolds joined Andrew Garfield – who recently starred in drama We Live in Time – for an installment, which you’d think would be a fun chance to get Deadpool and Spider-Man in the same room but ended up causing issues with at least one online loudmouth. While the user’s X post is inaccessible now, Variety noted that it read, “Andrew Garfield talking about playing a husband and father who’s wife decides to forgo cancer treatment and...

Ryan Reynolds responded to criticism over his pairing with Andrew Garfield for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” franchise on Friday, defending comedy acting as an equally valid and challenging medium to dramatic work.
“Andrew’s a genius. He and Florence are magic together in, We Live In Time. They’re heartbreaking and charming and spend the entire film in a high-wire act of humanity and constraint,” Reynolds wrote on X, formerly Twitter, responding to a since-deleted post questioning his pairing with Garfield. “And yes I am Deadpool But I will...

Ryan Reynolds has become known for a specific brand of meta-humor in recent years. Okay, maybe a little further back than in recent years. Reynolds has become synonymous with the fast-talking, quotable superhero Deadpool since his infamous 2011 flop, Green Lantern. The actor has quite successfully bounced back and gained an impressive reputation as a comedic actor, making his thoughts on the subtle art of making audiences laugh well-known. According to Variety, the comedy actor has come to the defense of comedic performances after seeing a comment about his upcoming appearance with Andrew Garfield in Variety's 21st season of Actors on Actors.
After the release of this season's pairings, one user made a now-deleted comment on X, formerly known as Twitter, that read: “Andrew Garfield talking about playing a husband and father whose wife decides to forgo cancer treatment and Ryan Reynolds talking about playing Deadpool.” Reynolds responded to this message...

Ryan Reynolds has time to defend the skills of comedy actors.
The “Deadpool” star responded to a tweet criticizing his inclusion in Variety’s “Actors on Actors” awards season roundtables. Reynolds is paired with Andrew Garfield, who will be speaking about his turn in drama “We Live in Time.” Meanwhile, Reynolds starred in “Deadpool & Wolverine” alongside Hugh Jackman.
“Andrew Garfield talking about playing a husband and father who’s wife decides to forgo cancer treatment and Ryan Reynolds talking about playing Deadpool,” one X user wrote about the slated December 9 “Actors on Actors” piece.
Yet that tweet garnered a response from Reynolds, who not only praised Garfield’s performance in “We Live in Time” but also spoke out on slighting comedy as a genre during awards season.
