I have made no secret of my fandom for Kansas City-based horror filmmaker Jill Gevargizian, whose résumé of short films includes “Call Girl” (2014), “Grammy” (2015), and the award-winning “The Stylist” from 2016, which garnered awards at both Fantastic Fest and Etheria Film Night. For her latest project, Gevargizian has teamed with Kansas City recording artist Loogey for a music video that ought to make horror fans happy.
The video, which Gevargizian calls “epic and evil,” is for the track “I’m Ready,” and debuted on Halloween this year. It teams the hip hop artist with Gevargizian and showcases her flair for the morbid and her usual impeccable visuals, as anyone who has watched her short films can attest. She makes horror look beautiful.
“I’m Ready” is unusually ambitious and polished for an independently shot music video, and the touches of horror that are added throughout give the song a new, more macabre meaning.

February is known as Women in Horror Month, when the spotlight is put on female filmmakers working inside our favorite genre, and many horror sites run pieces about movies directed by women. And that’s great! But there’s no reason why that spotlight should be limited to only one month, particularly when there are so many brilliant and talented female filmmakers working in the genre. Why not use this October to hit up these titles on Shudder and get to know some of the most exciting female voices in horror right now?

If you're a fan of Jill Gevargizian or of horror with a heartbreaking undercurrent, you'll be happy to hear that The Stylist is available for pre-order on Blu-ray now. If you're a regular reader of this site, you'll know that I'm a huge fan of the film. I'm honestly baffled that a studio like Blumhouse or any indie producers haven't snapped Gevargizian up to direct a franchise or original film. Najarra Townsend delivers a chilling performance filled with pathos as Claire, a hairstylist who desperately wishes to become someone else. Problems arise when she attempts to try on her clients' lives with traumatic and murderous results. Townsend's portrayal of the fragmented and flawed Claire has earned her several acting awards, including Best Actress at both Fantastic Fest...

Australia’s premier genre film festival Monster Fest wrapped its most successful edition to date last night in Melbourne with official closing film The Greasy Strangler (with actors Sky Elobar and Elizabeth De Razzo in person) followed by its annual awards ceremony acknowledging the best of this year’s impressive lineup.
The features jury, consisting of Fantastic Fest head programmer Evrim Ersoy, filmmaker Donna McRae and longtime screen critic Simon Foster awarded the festival’s top prize, The Golden Monster, to Julia Ducournau’s Raw, with Ducournau in person to accept her award, beautifully designed and sculpted by Rain Gidley Studios. Raw also walked away with an honour for best FX.
“Monsters Choice” audience awards also went to two of Nerdly’s current favourite Ozploitation filmmakers: Stuart Simpson (Monstro!, Chocolate Strawberry Vanilla) for his short Dragon Force; and Addison Heath (Under a Kaleidoscope) for his new feature Mondo Yakuza.

Short films don't often get a lot of love --- or attention --- from the press. That's why I'm proud to cover the Short Fuse 2016 program from Fantastic Fest and programmer Peter Kuplowsky. Short Fuse held a lot of great surprises from all over the globe; within it I see the future of international indie horror. The Stylist from Jill Gevargizian took home the Special Mention Award for Acting, and it's easy to see why; lead Najarra Townsend is a multifaceted villain. Even while she's doing very bad things to her clients, we feel her anguish in a poignant scene. Townsend is terrific in Gevargizian's standout shot. Chris McInroy's hysterical Death Metal had the loudest and most positive response of all the shorts in the screening (first...

Shock reviews short psycho thriller The Stylist. For a film to be successful, sometimes it needs to elicit reactions to as many emotions and senses as possible (without of course allowing us to smell or taste or touch it). A film that can delight (or repel) using sound, sight and be able to also elicit…

Last month, we posted the teaser and poster art for the short film The Stylist by Jill "Sixx" Gevargizian. I recently saw the film at its world premiere during Etheria Film Night at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica. As one of only nine short films screened that night --- tough odds by any means --- The Stylist stood out because of its poignancy, practical special effects, writing, acting, direction, editing, and beautiful cinematography (lensed by Robert Patrick Stern). The echoing, melodic score from Nicholas Elert elevates the film even more. And I'm not alone in my adoration for this film --- it won both the Jury Award and the Audience Choice Award, which sent Gevargizian into a mild state of shock. The awards are well deserved --- the film is...
