I liked this episode. The story was good and the end was nice. I was glad the reason for murder was a secret passion and I was glad that he wasn't killed by a spy, because that would make the story not very realistic. The fact that the guy wasn't even a real spy was a nice twist, and the fact that he was actually a goat gatherer was funny, knowing Castle's adoration for his past. The undercover scene is amazing and Castle wearing a Rambo like bandanna was a killer detail. Also, the video depicting the victim beating those thugs was a nice detail, adding a spectacular flavor to the story. On a more sensitive touch, I loved the Kate and Lanie apartment scene and I think, in the end, Castle should at least apologize to Kate for saying he won't miss her old apartment. Back to the story, Kate saying to Rick "You don't always have to keep talking" is funny, and his later reply to her "This is probably one of those moments when I shouldn't keep talking" as she just asked him where did he got that piece of evidence from is even funnier, and so is her not letting him hear what was on that recording. At the end, Gates' face when she had to praise Castle's contribution to the case made me smile too.
So, from all these, you might think it was an almost perfect episode, right? Well, it pains me to say it is far from that! In shows like Castle, details matter, and the blunders are countless on this episode. First of all, if you are born in Spain, there is no way your name would be Lance. Raoul, Rafael, Rodrigo, anything Spanish, but not an English name. Second, if you are a Spaniard, your family name will not be Gomez, which is very common in Latin America, but almost nowhere to be found in Spain (like any other -ez ending name). Spanish family names usually end in "o" or "a". May not be a big deal, but it matters. Further going, the illness Lance suffered of is confusing. Castle states it was leukemia, and we later find about a marrow transplant, but his former wife and his son talk about cancer. I know technically leukemia is still cancer, but people just don't call it cancer (even doctors don't - trust me, I have seen House MD) and alternating the 2 names is confusing. Seeing the episode, the thought that whoever wrote the story wants Bruce Willis dead came through my mind. I mean, killing the main guy from "Hard Kill", seriously? The reference is pretty clear to me! Somehow, I felt some of the things Kate says or does are not quite her style. The jealousy towards Castle's teen age idol is too much and her simply not letting him assist the questioning is forced, although pulling the blinds so he couldn't watch was kinda funny! In addition to that "my guys in Washington" is a phrase Kate would never use, especially towards Gates. She would simply say "my former FBI colleagues", as that was a formal situation, not a chat with Castle, when she could have spoken like that to dazzle him. And Kate would never go biased against a suspect to be questioned, so her asking Lance's soon to be ex what role was she playing was not the best idea. Also, when they go see Lance's buddies filming, on the cinema studio scene, the dialogs are pretty thin, like the writer simply wanted to get the scene done without much care. Also, when they enter the club undercover to retrieve that piece of evidence, "Tense up guys, it is show time" almost ruins the scene. I also noted an inconsistency when it comes to the killer. Usually, in this show, the team often talks with the killer before realizing he/she did it as well while this time we only see the killer when revealed.
So, was it a good episode or a bad one? I'd say it was a fine one, but, with a little care, it could have been a spectacular one! 8/10 from me!
