- In the past, a comet was discovered to pass through Earth's orbit of the sun. The Comet would leave a 30-million-mile tail of ice and debris. Scientists and space agencies anticipated no danger from the comet tail to the planet. To study the debris field, NASA even reinstated its once canceled shuttle program. The shuttle was totally destroyed by the meteor shower, as the Earth passes through the tail left behind by the comet. The Earth is ignited by the resulting meteor shower and the world as we know it, comes to an end.
Sam (Sean Cameron Michael) is a broken man, who 8 years after the world ends from a massive Meteor shower and the death of his son John (who was shot dead in a Scuffle to enter an elevator to get into an underground shelter before the meteors strike) and forced to survive underground. Sam and his trusted friend Troy (Brandon Auret) along with a young female Rose (Suraya Santos), are thrust on a journey that takes them into the darkest parts of the underground world.
The underground tunnels have limited power and are mostly covered in darkness. Survivors burn whatever they can find to get access to heat and light. The survivors live in specific sections called stations, which are interconnected via tunnels. Each station has its own water supply, power systems and other utilities. The entrances to the stations are narrow and heavily guarded. Sam and Troy live at the Kentucky Station.
There is a leak in one of the water pipes in sector 47 and the trio are tasked to find the leak in one of the shafts and fix it before the rains arrive, else the colony won't have any water in the lean months. Sam says that it will be a 5 nights job at least and he doesn't even have the proper tools. Rose (Suraya Santos) is a new joiner at the colony and is tasked to assist Sam. Rose likes Sam and wants him to teach her. Rose transferred to this station just 2 days ago and is very young. Having a skill is very valuable, otherwise young people are assigned as labor to dig for coal to keep the power stations operational.
The trio travel to the heart of the water management system, where a network of pipes collects the water from the rain catchment areas and distributes them all over the underground sectors. Sam finds that a rock fell during an earlier rain spell and damaged one of the pipes.
After fixing the water pipes, the colony leader assigns Sam to fix the power systems too as the man who was sent to fix it hasn't reported in 2 days. Troy and Rose tag along even when Sam was explicitly told to go alone. After the trio leaves, the leader of Kentucky station orders a lock-down after he receives a secret communication. As they get to the station, they find a bunch of heavily armed rangers who are there to secure the facility. The group enters the area with the power plants, which was supposed to be heavily populated with surviving humans. But to their surprise, the area is now empty. They find a survivor who only wants to escape. Troy's brother used to live in the colony, and he is livid that he is nowhere to be found. To make it worse, the group keeps hearing strange noises coming from everywhere. Rose reveals that she lived in the power station colony before she was shifted to the other colony where Sam and Troy lived.
Hunted down by mutated creatures, bandits and cannibals alike, their undeniable defiance to return home is challenged. The rangers suggest that the group should go topside and try to get back in through the main entrances. This is dangerous as most zombies reside topside and no human has been topside for 8 years. As the group is relentlessly hunted by zombies, Troy sacrifices himself to save the rest of the group.
Now only Sam, Rose and 1 ranger is left who reach topside. Zero (Brendan Murray) the leader of the rangers tells Sam that the meteors contained a fungus that ate away the brain stems and converted all affected humans to Zombies. Zero also says that there is a whole army of rangers that is stopping the zombies from entering the tunnels, but it has been getting harder. Unknown to Sam & Rose, Zero had been bitten by a zombie and to stop himself becoming one, Zero kills himself while Sam and Rose are sleeping.
Before dying Zero had told Sam and Rose about the way back. On topside, Sam & Rose encounter bandits and several groups of zombies. They start to bond. Sam tells Rose about his wife Anna (Sarah Kozlowski), who still haunts his dreams.
Soon the duo run into cannibals, who trick Sam and abduct Rose. Sam rescues Rose before they are about to sexually assault her, and they try to get away. But the cannibal leader Robert (Jonathan Pienaar), shoots Sam & vows to eat him. Sam distracts them and allows Rose to escape. Sam then lights a flare, which attracts all the zombies in the area who eat the cannibals. The next morning Rose comes back looking for Sam and finds him alive. Soon after Troy joins the duo, as he also somehow made it alive from the zombie attacks. Sam dies from his bullet injuries.
