Non studio review. The Subjects is an OK movie
carlburger17 October 2015
First off. This is my first review. I've been an IMDb member since 2006, and the main reason (besides laziness) for not writing a review earlier, has been the language barrier. I'm Swedish, and my English vocabulary is somewhat limited.

The reason why I chose to review this movie isn't because it's so good that it changed my religion, nor so bad it made me change my underwear. It's just because of the obvious studio-affiliated reviews. We really need honest reviews here on IMDb- or else the site will eventually implode, by studios applauding themselves.

Right. Now the review.

It's the basic "diverse group of people stuck in a room" concept. This time, the twist is that they're a focus group, trying out a pill. It soon becomes apparent that the pill gives the group different superpowers.

The actors are OK. Some more annoying than others. The archetypes are all there. But hey. What fun is a room full of like minded people, right? So I'll let that one slide. The script is the weakest point. The movie is short, clocking in at roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes- but they were clearly struggling to fill that little time. The godawful "debate" about whether to take the pill or not, at the very beginning of the movie is a prime example of that.

So it's not aces. It's not groundbreaking. It's not even very original although it tries so hard to be. But. Was i bored watching it? Nope. It was OK for the duration. It was OK for what it was.

So if you like the setup- group stuck in room, or like seeing superpowers emerging in regular people, then yeah. This will be OK for a Sunday afternoon. Don't worry too much about some characters that seem to have the superpower to be super annoying- because thankfully this movie has a high body count.

So in summary: -some annoying characters -Weak dialogue -Low budget special effects -Entertaining story (if you like superheroes/villains) -Doesn't take itself too serious (the end credits makes this abundantly clear)

As a superpowers fan, I rate The Subjects 6/10.

Quick turns between crap and good fun
rottninge3 January 2016
There's some fun dialogue at times. There's an interesting idea. Good casting. The basic story is, conceptually, good.

But the problem I had watching it was that I was thrown every 30 seconds between hating the script and all illogical stuff, and getting back to that it was actually quite fun and entertaining.

There's plenty of illogical stuff going on in this movie, and in that I don't even include the stuff that were meant to be illogical, or the sci-fi element.

I think my problem with The Subjects boils down to that this movie could have been good if it had focused more on one of the genres/themes it contained: comedy, a group of people stuck together, superpowers, or the clinical trial experiment. Choose one and tone the other three down. But now, the comedy comes sporadically, the group of people stuck together had to be compressed in between everything else that went down, the superpowers were too over the top, and the clinical trial was just a means for transportation to get to the scenario set up (from a scientific standpoint it was cringe worthy).

I switched back and fourth between enjoying The Subjects and finding it ridiculous.

Today I gave it 4/6 Any other day I could have given it a 6/10 depending on the mood

The Subjects non-studio review
redwingsm23 October 2015
So I'm a little disappointed that studios feel like us IMDb users are so stupid that we would fall for reviews that are made by people who just joined IMDb and only have 1 review of said material. Please stop!

That being said, this movie wasn't too awfully bad. Yes there are a few poorly acted scenes (British guy being the worst offender) and some scenes that were unnecessary (the debate over whether to take the pill), but I still have to say that I was entertained throughout.

The movie really takes off after the first person has the first reaction to the pill (burp). While the CGI was definitely sub-par, it got the job done and I didn't laugh too much about it. We've all seen worse, believe me. Once the movie gets going it's a wild ride all the way through to the end. I do not feel anyone would be wasting their time seeing it; especially Sci-Fi/Superhero movie fans.

In conclusion, while the movie does reach the "cheesy" level quite a few times, I was left smiling and would actually recommend it to my geek friends. Totally worth a rent!

Just OK. Nothing special.
hiyaboyos17 October 2015
The movie in and of itself is just OK and nothing special or out of the ordinary. It's touted as a movie about people with "super powers" and the truth of the matter is it has nothing to do with that at all. Just because a person has a weird ability out of the ordinary that has no benefit for mankind is not a super power. It's just that, an odd useless ability.

The script is a mess and full of holes. It leaves too many unanswered questions and there is very little character development. But what can you expect from a movie that is barely over an hour..?

The quality of the special effects were about par with the budget: nothing special. The acting seemed forced and some of the lines were actually kind of funny.

You may like it if you don't mind movies of what I've described above, otherwise you won't be impressed.

It's like a film school project with Youtube quality graphics!
Tarataqa17 October 2015
This is B-movie, straight-to-video quality. Even with the obvious "we gotta jump on this superhero bandwagon" attitude...The story and premise are both good. Execution is lacking. Dialogue is cheesy.

Acting talent was as you'd expect from a B-movie too. All the characters were over-the-top archetypes, but my favorite was Charlotte Nicdao's. Maybe she seemed to be the best actor because her character was the most genuine. Or maybe her acting and quick-talking made it better.

The other reviewers are right. The best thing in this movie is the unpredictability, but there are better ways to waste 90min of your life.

Don't take the pill.

A unique concept but not really exciting.
peterp-450-29871625 April 2016
"The Subjects" begins abruptly with a commercial about the pharmaceutical company SunSky. Unfortunately the quality of this fragment wasn't maintained the entire movie. As slick and polished as this clip looks like, so limited and dated the rest looks. The entire film takes place in one location. A discarded music studio that looks quite dusty. It's there where the eight guinea pigs are waiting, in order to take part in a medical experiment. You'd expect a high-tech, pharmaceutical company would have a glitzy, modern laboratories to do such experiments. This seemed rather like an out of use, abandoned hangar somewhere in a ghetto.

The eight strangers participating in this experiment are told that they'll take a new type of medication, in the form of a pill, and they need to stay for eight hours in that room. After that period, they can leave and will receive a reward of $ 800. This new chemical substance gives each person some kind of super power. And it looks like they don't have control over it. So you get some ordinary people, in essence insignificant persons, in a difficult situation with no way out. So it entirely degenerates into a tense, psychopathic atmosphere. And this while scientists are observing everything by use of cameras. So they are trapped like rats. Or better, trapped like Guinea pigs. As the title of the film says, they are simply ordinary, manipulable subjects.

The idea had potential enough to make it a fascinating film. However, the development left something to be desired. Partially you can blame the budget. "The Subjects" meets all the requirements of a low-budget B-movie. The actors are total strangers, the setting where everything takes place looks cheap and the effects are taken out of a vintage bag of tricks. The only thing this film could save would be a strong, original story and some brilliant performances. Unfortunately it goes wrong in that area as well.

The actors play a variety of personalities, ranging from extremely annoying to highly entertaining. Most annoying characters are Jenna (Emily Wheaton) and Devin (Spencer McLaren). The first was the height of stupidity. A conceited, narcissistic bimbo whose only purpose in life is to attend as many parties as possible. Devin is a nasty, aggressive guy who fortunately experiences the unpleasant side effects of the pill first. Corey (Paul-Henri) is the weirdo of the company. Someone who was at Woodstock I guess and I'm sure he used some other pills. John (Paul O'Brien) can be seen as the most normal and relaxed person. The magic tricks he knew were a little bland. After his first childish demonstration I was convinced that this would be important in the complete story. Nikki (Katharine Ines) is the appropriate person to complement John. A seemingly very normal, nice looking woman who prefers to reveal nothing about herself. Lilly (Charlotte Nicdao) is a timid girl. She's the complete opposite of Giggles (Frank Magree), an Australian big mouth. The latter created a bit of animo and evoked a few chuckles from me. Highly amusing. And somewhere at the end, Phil (Tosh Greenslade) shows up. His pill had one of the most interesting effects.

A colorful group which ensures some lively conversations. But the special effects were incredibly bad. Especially what happened to Devin was poorly displayed. The superpowers weren't very original either. I wondered what's so special about a force that enables you to change color. The most imaginative powers were the teleportation part and time traveling. Lilly, however, suddenly emerging as an expert in time travel, was a bit nonsensical and quite a coincidence. You're witnessing the whole movie how individuals get into a panicked state and how these characters interact and react to each other. It's not really exciting and there are too many aspects that remain unclear. A unique concept, though. But my view about Australian films being among the better movies generally, is being undermined a bit with this film.

Good movie, definitely worth watching
ericnr24 October 2015
After seeing the fake reviews from users that signed up the same month that they post the review, I... well, I'm making a review signing up just mere minutes before making the review. Alright, not the best intro, but hey, I prefer to start by being honest.

Now, about the movie... no spoilers here, I'll just say that it turned to be really entertaining for me. I didn't recognize any important actors (you know, the OHHH IT'S THAT ACTOR/ACTRESS), but they did their part alright for me.

The plot is rather interesting as well, even with the limited background story that is given by the script. Just a bunch of people dealing with the circumstances in which they are put into, and what comes out of it. And the human nature affecting everyone's decisions. In all, it keeps you watching to see what's happening to who, and that's the minimum a plot can aim to.

Yes, there might be some plot holes left unexplained, but nothing groundbreaking or that might ruin the experience.

In sum, don't be mislead or discouraged by the glowing and amazing reviews of users days old (despite being said by an user minutes old :P), The Subjects is worth watching.

Painful.
Siobhan1001 November 2015
I signed up to IMDb just to rate this film. IMDb users please don't dismiss my review because I have only just joined. Save yourselves from watching his dreadful film (Or just watch the beginning scene to see what I mean. It only gets worse.) All the reviews so far have got to be a joke or people have gone bonkers! This film is extremely painful to watch. The actors are unbearable to watch. I had to skip through bits of the film just to get through it. The actors are so irritating you feel angry at the TV screen. The storyline itself isn't that bad, it just needs the whole film to be filmed again by a different producer, with different actors, just different everything. Don't waste your time! It's not even a film that's so bad it's funny. It's just bad.

A good movie for an independent company
hil-4041822 October 2015
The Subjects has a good plot line, filled with humour as well as interesting concepts and drama. Although the movie is clearly not produced by a company with heaps of money, the film still offers viewers an intriguing take on superpowers in an exciting manner. The actors in the movie engaged me, and made me believe what the movie was about; which after all is the role of a good actor. Particularly I think Charlotte Nicdao was a highlight, as she makes her character easy to identify with. Particularly considering the hipster-crowd which generally populate the indie films. Overall I think the movie was a great example of films created by indie film makers, and should be seen by all :)

Lots of potential, poor delivery.
KeroScee19 October 2015
The concept was great but failure to understand what made similar 'one room' movies such as the Cube work, translated into a jarring and ultimately boring experience.

Acting for the most part is rather bland, if not terrible from most. A few among their number such as Charlotte Nicdao,Paul Henri and Tosh Greenslade demonstrate themselves as being capable of greater (possibly even great) things. The decision to have American accents did not work in anyones favour and only exaggerated the existing flaws in the script.

The writing itself comes into it's own near the end. However much of it before that comes across as stilted, with conversations feeling unnatural and poorly written. The latter half certainly shows off a great deal of Robert Mond's potential, but the poor early scenes fail to build up any investment in the characters for the end to pay off. A few more projects under his belt and Mond may be a director/writer worth following in the near future.

Until then, the subjects is probably a good case study of how not to do 'one room' movies, or how a movie can be close to being 'good' but fails to deliver.

There are two kinds of people
A_Different_Drummer17 October 2015
There are those who make movies and those who watch movies.

In the former group, there is a mission, a Holy Grail of moviedom if you like, to attempt to make the best movie you can with the least resources.

Imagine a movie done in on a single set with a half dozen or so unknown actors ... minimal resources ... could you make it work? Director/Writer Mond gave it a try with THE SUBJECTS and this reviewer thinks he succeeded.

The gold standard for these sorts of films -- there have been dozens -- is THE CUBE, a Canadian film done in 1999.

To make these films work you need good acting, yes, but above all you need a killer script, a script that just keeps the attention of the viewer. Keeps you glued.

I think THE SUBJECTS has such a script. I recommend the film and hope it gets the following it deserves.

And for those sincere reviewers who keep insisting this is some sort of "anti-superhero" flick, a riff off our modern obsession with superpowers, some kind of "message movie," you are missing the point entirely,

Overcomes a Small Budget to Produce an Antidote to the Standard Cookie-Cutter Superhero Flick that's Full of Refreshing, if Not Fully Realized Ideas
DareDevilKid21 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Reviewed by: Dare Devil Kid (DDK)

Rating: 3.4/5 stars

There's something quite different about writer-director Robert Mond's self-professed "anti-superhero" movie, "The Subjects". This energetic, low-budget venture strips away the romantic idea that superpower-enhanced humans are blessed by fate and views them instead as lab rats embroiled in a cause out of their control.

The film is a single-setting thriller that revolves around a group of strangers trapped in a soundproof studio. They have agreed to be here in the name of science – or more bluntly, to earn an easy US$ 800 by swallowing a pill and staying in a room for eight hours while being observed by a video camera. This is a clinical trial put on by pharmaceutical company SunSkye, which has brought together a tapestry of mostly familiar personalities. There's the girl next door Nikki (Katharine Innes), potty-mouthed brute Giggles (Frank Magree), air-headed party-goer Jenna (Emily Wheaton), chilled out dude Corey (Paul Henri), "time is money" straight-talker Devin (Spencer McLaren), nervous introvert Lilly (Charlotte Nicdao) and, magician/con-man John (Paul O'Brien).

Giggles has participated in these kind of trials before and is convinced the group is swallowing placebos. But necking a bunch of dud pills does not an interesting movie make; the story really kicks into gear when complaints about an upset tummy result in one of the characters spontaneously combusting about 20 minutes in. From then on it's a wild ride, built around constantly surprising the audience and offering them something quite different (though undoubtedly inspired by the multitude of superhero fare playing at the local multiplexes – some really good, some decent, and some other just plain bad).

Characters develop incredible powers and must quickly come to terms with them in a universe incompatible with training montages or cheesy speeches about great power coming with great responsibility. Interactions between the cast do feel a bit labored – there's lots of macho babble between the blokes – and the story takes a while to loosen up and make the most of its interesting ideas.

But when an extra cast member unexpectedly appears, it becomes clear how much thought Mond has invested in his screenplay, particularly its structure, which is more intelligent than it initially appears. Experimentation with time travel, teleportation, and the impact new superpowers have are among the film's most interesting thought- bubbles.

Where "The Subjects" really falters is in its technical aspects. It's lit and graded blandly and brightly – a moodier or higher contrast look might have better suited the script's dark elements. It could have also done with a better background score and more realistic sound effects in places.

However, "The Subjects" works an antidote to the standard-rate, cookie cutter superhero format audiences know all too well. It's presented in a colorful way and loaded with kooky ideas. And while budgetary constraints are apparent – particularly in the special effects – so is Mond's madly inventive brainstorming, which approaches the superhero genre with refreshing ambition. Worth a watch for his uniquely refreshing take on the tried-and-tested superhero genre alone.

Superhuman debacle, works better as dark comedy than sci-fi thriller
quincytheodore1 November 2015
The Subjects is the type of movie that utilizes "strangers trapped on predicament" scheme, with added superpower twist. This is not the caliber of X-Men nor does it deliver a cerebral psychology commentary of the powers' repercussion. What it does decently is producing satire of sci-fi which seems bizarre at first, but might just be odd enough for a realistic display of men given extreme powers with barely any supervision.

Story revolves around this group of men and women who are willing participants in a medical experiment. Most of the narrative is presented in mock commercial and brief tapes, and the rest moves along with the group's banter. The movie, like the characters, is confined to the room, so this is not the adventure fantasy type where fireballs are thrown at constant rate.

A lot of the plot hinges on chemistry of the cast, and admittedly these are colorful characters, almost too lively in fact. Sometimes they appear far too comical or predictably mysterious. These personalities are ludicrous versions of nerd, suave gentleman and thug instigator. The movie plays around with their oddities, resulting in a mixed bag of silly antics and actual violence.

Most of the banters are rather too strange, even for satirical purpose, although this does serendipitously produce humor. Its clash between serious tone and campy delivery can be too jarring for some. Furthermore, those who are not too familiar with sci-fi might not appreciate the cumbersome amount of fictional expositions.

This movie doesn't possess narrative depth or grand special effect, although it's presentably wacky enough for a simple entertainment.

Not a Good Movie at all
abienaime19 October 2015
OK this movie has potential! It could have gone somewhere, but the actors and the plot just went nowhere. Listen, I am a reasonable guy, plus I love a good thriller. I will sit through a long, boring, terrible move but if it has a good ending, id say it's a good movie. However, this movie wasn't that. In addition to that, the acting was so bad!! What gives with that one guy who is wayyyyy over the top all movie long???? The movie is soo bad I had to decide if it was even worth it to write this review! The only reason I decided to tke the time to write the review is I know someone else will do the same thing I did and look at the review on IMDb before watching. I cant even believe someone said this movie was "OK". Its not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

pretty ordinary
doorsscorpywag20 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
It was a pretty innocuous 80 minutes not one I would look at twice. I reviewed it because of all the fake reviews here that really spoil IMDb. The acting was not exactly brilliant and some of the dialogue was very forced and unrealistic. I guess they were trying to do a Chronicle type film but really did not have either the budget or the talent.

The invisible bloke was funny and I did like the twist at the end but that was about it really.

Threadbare script with really dull set pieces of not very good dialogue to pad it out over the hour.

No real merit to it, just there, and nothing really to distinguish it from the hundreds of other movies that appear on here with glowing reviews but are in reality not very good.

If you want to kill an hour or so watch it by all means but there are a lot better films of this type to occupy your time with.

Bad
drael6419 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This film is bad. It is badly acted. It is badly scripted. It's plotpoints are clichéd Special effects clichéd Acting clichéd. It's an admirable amateur contribution, due to its coherent pacing, and plot cohesion, as well as dramatic pacing, But it lacks a human and intuitive element, It feels fake, like it wants attention it hasn't commanded, and like its roles have been phoned in. It's a film, that lacks awareness of itself. Needs moar substance. 0/10. In summary, its bad, and you should not watch it, unless you are in film school. As a work, it is not entirely flawed - but as entertainment it is entirely substandard. Needs moar substance.

Exceptionally Good!
Foutainoflife15 July 2018
This was an amazing low budget film!!

No big name actors but decent acting from the cast. The story was interesting. It moves right along with little to no unnecessary side scenes. The set was decent. The effects, for the most part, in my opinion, were nicely executed and avoided moments of super chessiness. My only problem was the sound. It may have just been the video I was viewing but the audio to picture sync fell apart halfway through the film.

I would recommend this. Check it out.

.....One other thing, one of the male characters sounded EXACTLY like Matthew McConaughey!!

Hardy worth the time.
loadedfreak17 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
It has to be tough to make a movie. But this movie was just plain tough to sit through. Most of the actors are irritating at best. Some of the "superpowers" were difficult to comprehend. Color changing finger nails, an overactive digestive system, and Mr. Touchy Feely. What was Robert Mond thinking? My Rolex held my interest more than this B grade flick, as I could not wait for it to be over.

The premise of the movie is good, and certainly held more potential than what eventually evolved. Mr. Mond could have elaborated a bit more about Nikki's "power", as this viewer was stumped as to what exactly she was capable of, and what happened when she eliminated the godlike Corey. If Mr. Mond set out to create a suspense filled sci-fi, I think he failed.

I was thoroughly entertained, despite the films MANY flaws
manuelasaez15 December 2016
"Superhero" films are a dime a dozen, and the genre has grown so stale and life-less as to be a modern caricature of their former glory. This film takes a wholly unique approach to the "human with special powers" angle, and really runs with it. While being an entertaining film that will hold your interest for its entire run-time, it could have used so much more TLC in order to make it a classic in the sub-genre.

I knew this film was going to be interesting after the first power was "introduced". It was shocking, and came out of nowhere, and really sets the stage for the rest of the film. The SFX is low budget, and very poorly done in some instances, and the acting is disjointed and all over the place. Some actors are good, while others (like "Jizz") should never appear in a film ever again. The story is unique, with plenty of twists and turns, and the run time of one hour and 11 minutes makes it an easy watch, although not all of the pertinent questions are answered in the end.

Overall, this film varies too much in all departments to be given a proper score. The acting ranges from B-grade to less than F, as do the special effects, and the script. Ultimately, it's a very unbalanced film that does a lot of things well, but ruins it by doing so many things so unbelievably poorly, it's literally laughable. Had it been more consistent, it would have really been something special. But a low budget does not excuse such an unbalanced end result.

With more time, a better script, a more talented cast, and a better SFX budget, this film would have been a classic. As it stands, it's just another entertaining side dish to meatier and better made films. A solid C effort, especially considering the subject matter.

A Movie Mainly About Exploding People
ccladue-968-3164015 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I haven't the slightest clue as to why people infer this movie has anything to do with superheroes. It certainly does not, not even in the slightest context, other than perhaps someone saying the word "superhero" and someone mentioning something about Aquaman. (I suppose that saying "zombie" in a movie that has nothing to do with zombies makes it a zombie movie?)

There are no superheroes of any kind, only exploding people, and well, also a person that sort of accidentally teleports their arm and then dies, which also counts as an explosion in a way, or at least an "explosion" of blood.

The actors aren't really acting so much as just saying their lines, and the movie actually looks as if it doesn't have a director, which creates a sort of curious effect throughout. It is more interesting, to an extent, than a lot of other movies at this level of budget and competence. Ironically, the most obnoxious character (who makes the movie almost unwatchable) is also the one with the only memorable lines.

What happens in this movie: One, people standing around arguing about whether or not to take a pill. Two, people standing around discussing what sort of effect the pill might have on them. Three, people exploding and leaving parts of themselves in the air, on the floor, or on the wall.

And there you have it.

Oh, c'mon, this was outstanding.
mjpetro-smtp22 October 2015
Yea, I could probably nick a half-a-star or more off of this for trivial reasons, but goddammit this was highly entertaining.

The characters are circumscribed well, if a bit cartoonish, but they are played with real commitment and so anyone with heart will go with that aspect.

The "physicist" among them was charming and manic and had a great close-out in the end credits.

I liked this as much as I did "Coherence" and "Chronicle" (and others like "Primer,") with the bonus that the superhero and the time-travel conceits were included in one movie.

If you're just looking to get your fantasy stroked, this movie will do just fine.

Better than expected by a long way !
rhylly19 October 2015
I would not exactly call myself the avid indie-film-lover, so I kind of went in to this film with expectations of poor acting, effects and script. More than being pleasantly surprised, I actually really enjoyed the movie. The characters were apparent archetypes, but i found that excusable and even realistic given the setting of a clinical trial. The film had a number of really surprising twists, which did not come across as corny and led me to need to re-watch the film to fully understand the depth of Mond's work. I would have to claim that i enjoyed this movie far more than the typical studio effort of superheroes rewritten with near-identical scripts and class myself as a convert to appreciating (and paying for) indie films in the future!

Great take on the superhero genre
chris-3133113 October 2015
This movie is proof that a great script trumps a big budget. The movie has some unexpected twists, a unique take on the genre and a good injection of humour.

If you want to see a Sci-Fi movie the escapes the current Marvel/DC vortex and has some originality then this movie is for you.

It doesn't take itself to seriously. So ignore the small budget effects, enjoy the ride and have a few laughs along the way.

It will require a second watch to take it all in. You'll understand what I mean once you have seen it!

Highly recommend it to any SciFi/comic fan.

Excellent Sci-fi adventure
janesleight-1440515 October 2015
The Subjects is an extremely entertaining movie with a plot that demands you watch it more than once. It's an original mix of genres - Sci-fi, Comic book and thriller, with a side of comedy including some truly laugh out loud moments. The pace of the script varies perfectly with several unexpected "Wow - I didn't see that coming" moments. The eight main characters in the single setting of a locked room are all certain people 'types' and I'm sure everyone will have their favourite. If you like a laugh, enjoy Sci-fi / superpower themes and enjoy a film with unexpected moments, you'll like this film. I thoroughly recommend it.
