The animated video, a little over three minutes long, was released on Sony Music South on November 6. Even though “Shiraz” was directed by Bavarian director Franz Osten, an equally important man behind the making of this film has to be actor and producer Himansu Rai. Apart from making successful movies in India he was also searching for a way to make them appeal to both Western and Eastern audiences. When he met German director Franz Osten in 1924, this started a rather fruitful collaboration between the two men, resulting in such features as “Light of Asia”, “Shiraz” and “A Throw of Dice”. Using stories, such as the story of the Taj Mahal, as a foundation, the success of these films, according to writers like Gautam Chintamani, made many Indians look at their world “as something more than one merely belonging to an indigenous minority within a British context” (from “Franz Osten and the ‘Invention’ of Hindi Film”).

Who’s to blame for popularizing reenactments of real-life terrorist attacks? Should we point the finger at “United 93” director Paul Greengrass, or maybe Steven Spielberg’s morally gray “Munich” a year earlier? The entire genre traces back to Gillo Pontecorvo’s game-changing “The Battle of Algiers” in 1966, which challenged our ideas of on-screen realism by posing as a cinema vérité newsreel. Even so, such re-creations didn’t become chic until after 9/11, when action movies in which folks such as Sean Connery and Arnold Schwarzenegger saved the day from terrorist plots gave way to those in which successful attacks became the focus.
There’s little doubt that “Hotel Mumbai” director Anthony Maras has seen all these movies and then some, although what’s not so clear is why he felt compelled to tell the story of the 2008 Mumbai attacks — a series of 12 separate terror incidents that culminated in the bloody siege...

While at Series Mania Festival to present his mini-series “Thanksgiving” in competition, Nicolas Saada sat with Variety to discuss the spy drama which centers on the marriage between a Frenchman and American woman who are keeping secrets from each other.
Written by Saada and Anne-Louise Trividic, “Thanksgiving” was produced by Claude Chelli at Capa Drama, the thriving French banner behind “Versailles” and “Braquo,” for Franco-German network Arte. Newen Distribution is handling international sales on the series.
A former high-profile film critic, Saada previously wrote Frederic Jardin’s “Nuit Blanche,” which was remade into “Sleepless” with Jamie Foxx; and directed two films, “Spy(ies),” a London-set thriller with Guillaume Canet, and most recently “Taj Mahal,” a psychological thriller with Stacy Martin (“Nymphomaniac”) set against the backdrop of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack.
What’s the genesis of “Thanksgiving”?
