- Marla (Anya Taylor-Joy) is a formerly free-spirited girl (who used to dream of exploring the world after high school graduation, instead of going to college like what her parents want her to do) who has grown up to be responsible yet overprotective in order to care for her brother Charlie (Gabriel Bateman). Marla gave up her dreams after she learned that her parents died in a car accident.
4 years later, Charlie has grown lonely and disconnected from her after the death of their parents. One night, Charlie sneaks out at night to visit a toy museum with a Playmobil exhibit. Marla is able to track Charlie as their phones were linked and she could track his location easily. After Marla arrives and scolds Charlie for running away. Charlie retorts that Marla has shut out all the adventure in her life and as a result doesn't do anything herself, nor allows Charlie to do anything fun. A lighthouse illuminates the exhibit and starts levitating all the Playmobil figurines. It transports Marla and Charlia to the Playmobil world when Charlie grab holds of one of the Viking figurines.
Marla and Charlie find themselves in the middle of a Viking battle (and they are both Playmobil avatars as well. Marla is herself, but Charlie is now a Viking warrior). Charlie helps one of the Viking's armies win, after he realizes that he has super strength now. The Vikings are in awe of Charlie and hold a feast in his honor. They stop Marla from leaving with Charlie. Charlie is kidnapped by some pirates (who are being paid by the Emperor Maximus (Adam Lambert) to bring him the strongest Viking they can find).
Marla spots Charlie being kidnapped by the pirates and follows them on a horse as they travel on a freeway. Marla's chase is interrupted by a truck, whose driver was distracted while talking on the phone. As a result, Marla loses her horse, and manages to get on the truck to continue her pursuit. But the pirates vanish, and Marla cannot follow them.
Frantic to find her brother, Marla goes to the nearest town hoping to ask for help, and runs into Del (Jim Gaffigan), the driver of a food truck whose client (a town pub owner) refuses to pay him for pink hay that causes the town's horses to sprout wings. Del is under pressure as he is in debt to Glinara and needed the money to pay her back. As Marla tries to form a posse to find Charlie, Del gets her out of trouble when she shows Viking gold (that she accidentally picked up when she exited the Viking battle) to the whole town and agrees to help Marla find her brother in exchange for the gold.
Marla and Del run into Rex Dasher (Daniel Radcliffe), a secret agent and an old friend of Del. Rex explains that a number of characters from different lands have disappeared. The group sneaks into a villainous spy agency SKULL (Secret Killer Union of Lethal Lemurs) headquarters to find information about the disappearances. The intend to use SKULL's satellite network to find out where the pirates re-appeared. Despite some issues, they successfully gather the data (& figure out that an alien crime lord Glinara (Maddie Taylor) was involved in the disappearance of Charlie as a device on the pirate vehicle had Glinara's symbol on it) and escape, but Rex is later captured by the pirates. Rex is taken away to Constantinopolis and finds Charlie, who had been locked up with other characters by Emperor Maximus (The tyrannical ruler of Constatinopolis), who intends to have the prisoners fight to their deaths. Maximus believes in using the Coliseum fights to keep the people distracted from his harsh policies. Rex tells Charlie that Marla had been looking for him, which encourages Charlie to break away. However, he later allows himself to be recaptured so the other characters could escape.
Del recognizes that a device used by the pirates belongs to Glinara, an alien crime lord. After meeting with her in exchange for information, Del offers to pay twice as much as he owes her. Glinara agrees and reveals that she sold the device to Maximus. However, Del is unable to uphold his end of the bargain, as Marla only had two pieces of gold left (she had been lying to Del about the amount of gold she had in (Marla indicated that she had 40-50 gold coins) order to get him to cooperate with her to save Charlie).
Angered, Glinara captures them and attempts to drop them into a portal, but they are spared by Glinara's robot servant Robotitron (Lino DiSalvo) (who has fallen in love with Marla), who hacks the portal and drops the group into a forest. Del leaves the group, upset by Marla's deception. Marla and Robotitron get lost in the forest until Marla accidentally hit a fairy godmother (Meghan Trainor), who encourages her to continue her search and sends her to Constantinopolis.
Arriving at the city, Marla reaches a Coliseum where Charlie is about to fight a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Charlie and Marla work together to fight off the T-Rex, but to no avail. Del soon arrives with his food truck, and Marla uses the last of Del's pink hay to turn the T-Rex harmless. An enraged Maximus orders his guards to arrest them, but the guards reveal themselves to be Rex and the missing warriors, who then lock Maximus inside a cage. As everyone celebrates their victory, Marla and Charlie use the T-Rex to fly back to the lighthouse and return to the real world, where it is revealed that they were missing for only five minutes. On good terms, Marla promises to Charlie that their relationship will be mended.
In a mid-credit scene, one of the security guards finds a figure of Maximus on the floor next to a cage. As he places him on top of Mount Olympus, Maximus's laugh is heard.
