Cracking Film based on the women who fought for their Motherland
t-dooley-69-3869167 October 2016
In 1917 Russia was at war – with Germany and itself. The troops at the front were war weary and being run by 'Soldiers Committees', the Tsar had been removed and the Provisional Government were fighting a losing battle for the hearts and minds of the people and the soldiers. So Minister of War, Alexander Kerensky, was charged with raising an all female combat unit. The first one was the '1st Russian Women's Battalion of Death' and it was raised and led by a feisty soldier who had already been decorated – fighting alongside men – this was Maria Bochareva.

She ruled with an iron fist and this is her story as told through the women who fought with her. They were one of only two units that were sent to combat and this film portrays what they did, the obstacles they had to overcome and the men they went to help.

Now history purists may take exception at some of the events here but the Kerensky Offensive (which they were in) is actually done fairly well. The acting is all rather good and the materiel seemed fine too. I have seen one review which called it 'modernist propaganda' but this is 'based' on facts. A full film on the real life of Maria Bochareva would have been a great idea too from the little I have read of her. The film portrays most of the women as being heroines though and she is not set at centre stage. This though is still a film very much worth the effort and as such I am happy to recommend.

A competent propagandist flick
adcznr19 January 2016
While it's very well shot, acted, propped and all, the black-and-white one-sidedness of this movie leaves no illusions - it's just a piece of propaganda. Patriotic, god-fearing feminists? Well, it's more subtle than the soviet era, more historically accurate but still - it leaves no space for moral ambiguities, shades of gray or doubt - they're heroines and don't you dare deny it! And if you disagree, try to find one good (or decent, or at least humanely portrayed) German in the movie from around a hundred depicted. It's perfectly worth watching, but the only review so far completely missed the point. It's a modern way of manufacturing social cohesion at home, and sympathetic opinions abroad, on par with Hollywood.

Entertaining, but not truthful
GwydionMW4 April 2017
Russia had already lost the war, and carrying on with it was pointless.

Does show how gruesome the war was, but fails to question the need to fight it.

Enemy soldiers in uniform are entitled to collect military intelligence and are not spies. To ignore a white flag is a war crime.

Maria Bochkareva got pardoned once, but urged US intervention to help the far-right and antisemitic Whites in Russia's Civil War. Saying she was 'seen as on the White side' is not a fair summation of this.

Came back to fight as part of their army, was captured and executed.

The movement of the heart
nobuyuki_shinoh2 March 2019
When I first saw this film, I realized this is the film about the the story in WW1 which is similar to the short film "Procelain Unicorn", I am not quite a fan of the war movies but based on the history, this movie is undoubtedly described what really happened in the history. Firstly, the Russian army recruitment scene moves my heart and I deeply felt the desire of the Russian to win against German Army in the battle and this also describes the fighting spirit of the Russian people. Also, there is a scene which two women hugged each other indicates that behind the war there is love.

Really
svader16 January 2020
I thought this movie was quite comedic in parts . . .mum arriving to take Nadya home etc

Nonsense. Looked ok but didn't appear realistic. In reality the main character was executed ages 30. The actor playing the role looked about 50.

The scenes on the obstacle course and the subsequent punching each other reminded me of a scene from Benny Hill.

Recommended! Well worth watching. Realistic, Great big budget production. A poignant story. Very moving

I was very moved during this film. How historically accurate is a moot point. As a movie it was very realistic & obviously quite a lot of money was spent on it. This is reflected in the costumes & battle scenes. I thought it was an excellent movie & one that gave the centre stage to women at war as participating hero's rather than just background support for the male 'hero's'. It bears re-watching & makes me want to read up on the history of these ladies. The actresses themselves were fantastic & very believable. The story really engaged me. The fact that I was unfamiliar with any of the cast did not take away form the movie itself actually it added to it as one didn't know who would survive & who wouldn't. Oddly enough though I don't speak Russian the subtitles were excellent & makes the experience of watching it even more believable. Though it's sad & upsetting in places it bears re-watching. Recommended!

Realistic, heartbreaking, accurate, perfect in all senses.
argento10027 September 2015
This is an actual true history with an awesome performance from the actor, a very realistic depiction of the situation of that time Russia. Image, FX, acting, historic accuracy, scenarios, guns, uniforms, all to the perfect reproduction. The story is amazing and it will make you care about the people on it, you will really suffer with their death in the horror of the trench and open field charges of WWI. You will follow the formation of a female battalion in the awakening of the soviet revolution. Created to encourage the Russian men in the front who were refusing to fight after years of dying and fail to push the Germans back, in a war they didn't care for a ruthless dictator that was the zar. The women were there for idealism or revenge for the loss of their loved ones. They went, and fought proving themselves truly warriors inspiring other women to fight for their land and people, not the rulers. With this scenario, you will find that with all the reason the men had to not fight, here, they look like a bunch of cowards and more girls than the girls of the story.

Piece of art, a truly one. The kind of war movies i like.

Recommended, not a second of waste.

An absolute must-see!
vadim_k30 January 2016
A wonderfully told true story of a very difficult period in the history of Russia. Great script, acting, filmography and scenography. Delighted to see that WWI stories are making to the Russian cinematography. There is good balance between funny lines, drama and action. Horrors of war depicted without exaggeration and unfortunately very common in the movies artistry. Girls remain girls even in the army, even when risking their lives, even at the time of a heroic act. And I think it is exactly that exposes the merciless, cruel face of war. I am glad to see that director is not taking sides in the conflict that was about to bring the Civil war in Russia. His position is very clear nonetheless - war is a brutal crime. Through the dirt mixed with blood and sweat in fearful eyes of the girls of Battalion we can still see much love, and hope, and peace. Peace that doesn't mean the absence of war, but clear conscience and purpose. An absolute must see!

Well Made Movie That Introduces Some Little Known History
sddavis6325 August 2018
It's 1917, and the First World War has been going on for three years. In Russia, the Tsar has been overthrown and the provisional government led by Kerensky has taken power. But the Russian Army is completely demoralized. The Communists aren't yet in power (that would await the second revolution) but "Soldiers' Committees" have been formed that have essentially taken command of entire battalions. Officers aren't obeyed and the soldiers are refusing to fight. All is chaos. The Kerensky government decides to "boost morale" by forming an all-women's battalion under the command of Maria Bochkareva. This movie tells their story.

I always appreciate a movie that fills me in on some history that I wasn't previously familiar with and I had never heard of this story before. Bochkareva's battalion became known as the "1st Women's Battalion of Death" and although there were several women's battalions formed after them, they were the first of only two to go into battle against the Germans. Now, as far as history is concerned - from what I've read since watching this I realize that there's a lot of dramatic licence taken with the story, but the portrayal of Bochkareva - a tough, no nonsense battalion commander who had served in the Russian Army since the outbreak of the war and who refused to allow the formation of a "Soldiers' Committee" in the battalion - by a Russian actress named Mariya Aronova seemed authentic enough and was compelling. Bochkareva believed - and Kernesky agreed - that an all womens' unit (of women willing to fight) would shame the men into doing their duty as well.

It takes a while for the women's battalion to see combat, but once combat is introduced, it's portrayed pretty well and there are a lot of graphic scenes. I will say that it's sometimes difficult to tell the Russians from the Germans - although in some ways I suppose that adds to the chaotic feeling that must be a part of any battlefield. The film is in Russian with well done English subtitles; there's no need to dub it. If I could compare this movie to something western audiences might be familiar with, it struck me as similar in tone and purpose to "Glory" - the story of the first black regiment in the Union Army during the US Civil War. Entertaining History
daytradermillion24 August 2022
Entertainment rules this action splashed flick with the backdrop of history giving it a slight nod. Great acting, dialogue and scenes make it a lively watch, but if you are looking for a docu-history film, then you'll have a lot to criticize.

During the First World War, Russia indeed recruited and formed some 5,000 women into a handful of battalions and detachments in hope of creating a catalyst for the war-weary male military units on the front. In fact, two all-female battalions entered into combat but not to the extent that we enjoy in this 2015 remake of fighting on the front.

Battalion, however, doesn't disappoint as we ride the action-packed train realizing that it was never an attempt to rewrite history, but rather something, perhaps 2 hours that will be worth the viewing.

A well crafted film throughout. The acting from all cast members, action scenes and script, make this a worthwhile addition to any war film buffs collection. A This is better than most big budget Hollywood war films.

The world gone mad
fran-6591northstar19 January 2019
Surviving WWI was a feat in itself, yet here we have a story where Russia sent woman into battle against German forces depicted here in the film to the point I found myself wondering how close on the brink of madness was the world at that time, not that woman were in battle but seeing those very woman and their dire situation while emotional integrity still prevailed against unfathomable duress, pointedly stated with the best line from the film when Evdokiya Kolokolchikova, spoke, 'We're going there to die.' Very good acting and filming direction, with tense trench warfare. A noted point in history hopefully not forgotten.
