From motherhood to otherhood
FrenchEddieFelson5 August 2019
A feel good movie about the midlife crisis and the empty nest syndrome. On Mother's Day, three single mothers decide to rendezvous in Manhattan with their three ungrateful sons. Ungrateful? Well, they forgot about Mother's Day ... again!

The atmosphere looks like an unpredictable mix of the endearing side of any Woody Allen movie from the 70s, the irreverent side of Sex and the City (1998) and the cheesy side of Mamma Mia! (2008). It's definitely not a masterpiece but I liked it.

If "Otherhood" were a book, it would be A good beach read
thejdrage10 January 2022
This is a good movie to watch "for fun". Yep. It would be a good beach read if it were a book. There are some good points made, but the problem with good points is that the people who need them the most never "get" them. All in all, kids will be kids and strong moms will continue to be just that! How lucky people are who have them. :)

Fun movie, delivering a good message.
layaleimdb13 September 2020
This movie not only makes mothers nowadays feel great about themselves, it also delivers a very important message for their kids.

Fun movie. Fun characters. What I liked most about it is how they managed to show how they party and have fun without making them look aggressive like other "let's go drunk" movies out there.

Feel good movie with a message
onnoalink4 January 2020
This movie starts out as a tale of three mothers in upstate New York who feel ignored by their sons, who live in New York City. There is comedy and some cliché acting, but when you look further you witness what many parents experience nowadays: losing contact with their children who are living their own life without ever thinking about the persons who raised them en love them. It's about the present hedonistic and shallow lifestyle of many young persons, the selfish attitude they are not even aware of themselves. I guess many young people who criticise this movie recognise themselves in the three sons.

Very cute, great performances by the three leads
stevedgrossman4 August 2019
Having Netflix, you tend to stumble on moveis, instead of seeking them out, at times.

This was one of them. I really enjoyed the performances of the three main female leads.

Was the story 100% believable, no not really, but it was a great way to escape for the evening and enjoy a movie without being insulted, spooked, grossed out or generally bored by MILLENNIALS.

Very cute, worth a look.

Cute movie! R rating is misleading tho ?!
ldjones-155713 August 2019
This was a cute modern take on raising kids and how to parent adults of today. If you aren't a parent, you prob won't understand the humour or appreciate the slow parts. If you aren't in the mood for this type of family centred movie, then don't watch it. The negative reviews listed here are not warranted.

unrealistic but funny/cute
novagirl118 September 2019
The costume designer made some questionable decisions about Patricia Arquette's wardrobe. It was pretty unrealistic - I don't know any mothers that would act the way these characters do. That said, the movie did make me laugh and parts of it were kinda cute.

SATC for Moms
phd_travel4 September 2019
Cindy Chupack of SATC directed this feel good comedy about mothers visiting their sons in NYC for Mothers Day. Each of the stories is different and cute. It's nice to find this kind of ensemble comedy that doesn't go over familiar ground. Some scenes are laugh out loud funny and some are touching.

Angela Bassett looks great. Felicity Huffman is good at comedy a nice change from all the serious roles of late.

Worth a watch.

Good Performances In A Mediocre Story
sddavis632 August 2019
The story's a pretty simple one. Three moms (played by Angela Bassett, Felicity Huffman and Patricia Arquette) with disfunctional lives who have been lifelong friends feel ignored on Mother's Day when none of their grown sons who have equally disfunctional lives (played by Sinqua Walls, Jake Lacy and Jake Hoffman) call them. So they jump in a car and travel to New York City unannounced to visit their respective boys - who are none to happy with the surprise. That's the story.

The performances from the cast were fine. I had no complaints there. But the story is weak. It really doesn't have much of a point to it, to be honest. It's described as a comedy, but to be perfectly honest I found the movie rather dark - and not as in a dark comedy. Just dark and largely humourless to be honest. Even a dark comedy has to have some wry, sardonic humour to qualify it as a comedy. This really didn't. It wasn't a pleasant movie and I really didn't feel much sympathy for any of the characters. The story really doesn't have that much of a point to it except showing us the various disfunctional relationships, but - of course - implausibly it all leads up to the required happy ending as everything works out perfectly for everyone.

It's not a horrible movie. It's just very mediocre. The good performances from the cast get it a 4/10 from me.

Feel good...
kate-dunlop-383-3128844 October 2019
Such a lovely movie. Makes me hope Felicity Huffman isn't ostracized from Hollywood as she's such a great actress. Great to see Becki Newton too...she needs to me in more movies!

Not a waste of time
Simply-Red6 October 2019
I'm just reinforcing the 6 rating at the time I reviewed this. For women, especially mothers of adult children who can handle a rated "R" movie and all that can come with, this flick is probably an 8. For men, its tolerable to watch with your wife...not horrible.

Some adult beverage, if you imbibe, for me was very helpful in enjoying the flick, but I did find my thoughts drifting a bit toward the end of movie. It did get to a point where I was a bit tired of the mother's...blah, blah, blah...whine, snivel, blah. We get it. You know, men also dont enjoy getting older, we just dont complain about it as much!

There is a reason many adult children enjoy life without their parents around and obligatorily visit, then return to their lives. "Cats in the Cradle and the silver spoon" as the song goes. It was correct then, and still is today. This is just a movie about women who lament it and have nothing better to do than be a pain to their kids...out of the blue and uninvited.

Some good lessons of course, the movie has merit.

OH DEAR
laragi3 August 2019
I don't mind films about women getting older, in fact they can be very well done. This one wasn't. It is sooooooo predictable and rather cliche. What happened to their acting skills?

not bad
kim0212814 September 2019
The crazy thing is during the whole movie, I am watching the actor playing Daniel, and thinking, he reminds me so much of Dustin Hoffman...little did I know!!

Not a bad movie nor is it a great movie, it is just fun to watch, and Angela Bassett is a dream in the new outfit she wears to go to the club.

Cute, relatable story with excellent acting!
mstarkrn7214 December 2019
I think this is one of Netflix's better efforts at feature films. The story was well-written and supported, with perhaps a couple of weak spots (i.e. an explanation of the connection between Matthew & the woman his mom {Angela Basset's character} partied with at the club); the purpose of the second couple, I assume, sharing the brownstone where Paul lives with his partner). The actresses were a great cross-section of mothers who are also friends and have some who are close friends.

Is it an Oscar, award-winning film? No. Did it keep me engaged, interested, and eager to see how things turned out at the end? Absolutely, YES! It was a perfect break from the depressing/serious and/or thought-provoking documentaries I also watch regularly on Netflix.

Fun watch if you are in the mood for something light
simk-037815 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie last night to destress and enjoyed it. I loved Carol Walker's character the most - how she emerges out of her timidness and takes control of her life, and how she encourages her son to make the most of his time and energy, giving him a lot to think about the choices he had made.

So what if it's cliché and predictable?
okilicious29 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It's a nice movie to look into the annoying mother trope that we usually see in movies. That they're not 2-dimensional character, that they have their own problems and life and care deeply for their sons.

Yeah, I don't like the forgive-the-cheater thing. But it's something to agree to disagree.

Not funny. Not engaging. But very predictable. The characters are klichées and instead of being moved I just got annoyed. Sorry, but I really didn't find it good or interesting.

One Of The Worst Movies I Have Ever Seen
mattyhar4 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was epically bad. The entire plot was beyond preposterous. Every single turn got more and more far fetched and unreasonable. Every single thing the three woman did was extremely uncomfortable. Felicity Huffman's character was just a terrible, terrible person. For three great actresses they all gave pretty blah performances but that's not surprising given the dialog was painfully cliched. Why did Angela Basset throw the fish in her pool? She's just gonna have to get them out herself. Why did the guy from Girls take his gf back? There was no reasonable explanation as to why he would forgive her. Do not waste 90 minutes of your life with this pile of garbage.

I called to my mom after the movie
CinemaAmazing2 August 2019
I mean, yes is a predictable comedy BUT the message that this movies pass us is so strong and powerful. A solid screenplay, a nice directing style with a Netflix budget and with the outstanding and brilliant performances of the Oscar nominated actresses Angela Bassett and Felicty Huffman and Oscar Winner Patrícia Arquette. Recommended to the all the grown up sons that live far away from their mother. And in the end of the movie u're gonna miss her so much that u gonna call to your mom until she answer.

Hard to care for any character
mennivetvadjagmenar3 August 2019
Sometimes the characters have reasonable motivations and valid points - but most of the time all the characters are just unlikeable. Solid acting from the three leads makes the first act enjoyable but after that it's hard to care for any character
