- The departure of the Pandavas upsets Bhishma, Vidur, Drona and the other elders of the Royal House of Kurus. Kunti wants to leave with her sons and her daughter-in-law. Kunti demonstrates very clearly that her family has not been insulted. The insult has been done to the throne of Hastinapur, Bhishma, Drona, Kripa and the kuru honor. Dhritarashtra wants Kunti not to interfere in the quarrel of the kids. But Kunti refuses to stay in a palace that saw the scene of its daughter-in-law being dis-robed. Vidur requests Kunti to stay at his cottage in Hastinpur, if she does not want to stay in the palace. Vidur says that her age, Kunti cannot handle the rigors of a forest life. Dushasan offers that Kunti can stay in his chambers, but Bheem objects since that would put Bheem in Dushasan's debt and that would stop Bheem from killing Dushasan In battle and drinking his chest blood and also to get that blood for Draupadi's hair. Yudhishthir requests Kunti to stay with Vidur, and wait for their return. Kunti asks Draupadi to take care of Sahadev. The forest exile begins. They wander deep into the forest and construct a hut for themselves.
Bhishma admits to Vidur that he was secretly hoping that Yudhishthir wins the game of dice. If he had done so, Hastinapur would have been free of Shakuni's curse forever. Bhishma knows that war is coming and asks Vidur to save Hastinapur from it. On Bhishma request, Vidur advises Dhritarashtra to summon them back (he asks to consider 13 days spent in forest, symbolically as 13 yrs). Dhritarashtra rebukes Vidur & is also angry that Kunti is staying with Vidur instead of staying in the palace. Gandhari stops Dhritarashtra and says that it is not possible for Kunti to ignore the insult done to her daughter-in-law by continuing to stay in the palace. She says that if she was in Kunti's place, she would have done the same. Dhritarashtra wants Kunti to go to the forest with the Pandavas, else Hastinapur will never forget that her sons are wandering the forests. Dhritarashtra blames Vidur for favoring the Pandavas and wanting the death of Duryodhan (as he has threatened to commit suicide), so he orders him out of Hastinapur, so Vidur leaves for the forest.
After spending thirteen days in the forest Bheem, Arjun, Nakul and Sahadev are ready to wage a war against Hastinapur. Dhrishtadyumna arrives (along with armies of King Drupad) and is willing to attack Hastinapur under Yudhishthir's flag. Yudhishthir refuses to wage war and decides to spend the full thirteen years in exile as his punishment for being reckless in gambling. He says that his brothers and his wife are not bound by his promises and can leave at any moment as they desire. Draupadi refuses to leave with her brother to Kampilya. Dhrishtadyumna says that Drupad knew that Pandavas would never wage war proactively. He promises to fight under Yudhishthir's flag whenever he decides to wage war against the Kauravas.
Vidur meets Pandavs in the forest. Bhishma is livid and orders Dhritrashtra to call Vidur back as he is the only person who can state the truth without fear.. Dhritrashtra sends his charioteer Sanjay to call him back to Hastinapur. Shakuni knows that Pandavas consider their righteousness to be their most powerful weapon. They will complete the terms of their exile before returning. Shakuni tells Duryodhan to prepare for the incognito year and relax as 12 yrs is a long long time.
