- Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a goalkeeper in school football team. Bannerjee a school cricket coach asks him to join his cricket team and practice daily with him for two hours time passes and he becomes a big state-level cricketer, but for a long time luck doesn't favor him to become a member of the Indian Cricket team. Dhoni takes a job in Indian Railways as a ticket-checker and plays cricket for the railways; after four years he gets selected for the Indian Cricket team and turns out to be one of the best cricketing captains in the history of Indian Cricket.—alex.mjacko@gmail.com
- The movie follows the journey of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, a budding cricketer from Ranchi becoming the most successful captain of Indian Cricket Team . The movie begins its screenplay with the ICC Cricket World Cup Final (India vs Sri Lanka) in the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai where Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Sushant Singh Rajput) is watching the match live on screen. He decides to take the stand, and tells the authorities that he would go for batting if the wicket falls down. Dhoni takes up his bat and leads down the stairs to the roar of the crowd.
The movie then sets to a flashback in Ranchi, Bihar, India set in 7 July 1981, the day on which Dhoni was born. Pan Singh (Anupam Kher) is Dhoni's father & Jayanti Gupta (Bhumika Chawla) is his sister. As a young boy Dhoni is the goalkeeper for his school team. Baneerji (Rajesh Sharma) is Dhoni's school coach and watches him in goalkeeping practice. He needs a wicket-keeper for his school cricket team.
Pan Singh is the water manager for the residential colony of Meco limited, a PSU. As such, he is also in charge of watering the local cricket stadium. He wants Dhoni to study and become something in life. But he doesn't stop MS to pick up sports. Banerjee convinces Dhoni to pick up cricket and asks him to concentrate on wicket-keeping (Dhoni wanted to be a batsman). Still, Dhoni steals every available moment from his coach's eyes to practice batting. Soon, he is winning matches for his school, in crunch situations, with his batting. soon, Dhoni asks Banerjee to let him open batting for his team, which Banerjee reluctantly allows. DHoni demonstrates his ability to pull crowds to grounds with his electric batting.
In class XII, Dhoni finishes his exams in 2.5 hrs, so he can get to the grounds on time for the corporate Cricket tournament. Dhoni one day learns from another player, how to hit a Yorker for 6, using the trademark "helicopter" shot. Mr. Dowal (Kumud Mishra) is the MD of MECO & offers Dhoni a stipend of Rs 1500 a month so that he joins his company over SAIL (who is offering rs 650 as stipend). Soon, Dhoni gets to play for Bihar under 19 team. Dhoni plays against Yuvraj (Herry Tangri) in their under 19 match between Bihar and Punjab. Dhoni plays well, but gets out before a century and loses his chance to get into the under 19 WC team, as Yuvrah hits a triple century.
But Dhoni gets into East Zone team in Duleep trophy. Dhoni's friend suspect Dowal of sabotaging Dhoni's chances by not giving him the letter & then by not helping Dhoni get to Calcutta in time for team reporting. Dhoni's friends pool in the money to rent a car and Dhoni to Calcutta overnight, but they miss the flight by 30 minutes.
But then AK Ganguly, head of Railways East Zone, hears about Dhoni's misfortune & gets him into the Railways team by offering him a job in Indian Railways, for Rs 5000 a month. Ganguly takes Dhoni's trial himself & Dhoni hits him to all parts of the ground. Ganguly confirms Dhoni's job. Dhoni's first apartment requires him to share it with 3 other railways employees. Soon, Dhoni is frustrated as he does his meaningless day job in Railways & plays Ranji matches for Railways occasionally. He shares his frustration with Ak Ganguly, who allows him to play as much sports as needed, without worrying about his attendance.
In 2002, Jagmohan Dalmiya (Ravindra Mankan) constitutes a talent agency within BCCI to unearth cricketing talent from tier 2-3 cities. In 2003, Dhoni watches India lose the world cup, on TV. Then, when a colleague complains about Dhoni's attendance record, Dhoni quits Railways to focus on cricket.
Kiran More (National selector) watches Dhoni in a Deodhar Trophy match. In 2004, Dhoni is selected for India A team tour to Zimbabwe. Dhoni hits centuries & is soon selected for India's main tour to Bangladesh. Dhoni is run-out first ball in his first match. In 2nd match he makes 12. In 3rd Match 7. He is selected for Pak's tour to India. He meets Priyanka Jha (Disha Patani) on the plane, who is a big fan of Sachin Tendulkar. He scores 3 in the first match, but in all matches he is coming 7 or 8 down, with only a few overs to go. In the 2nd match against Pakistan, he goes in at # 3 and scores a century. Dhoni starts dating Priyanka. His career takes off & he gets a contract with BCCI & endorsements. Priyanka has a car accident, while Dhoni is on tour in Pakistan, & she dies.
India is beaten by Bangladesh in 2007 WC. Dhoni leads India to victory in the 2007 T20 in South Africa. Dhoni is given captaincy for the ODI team to Aus. Dhoni makes some tough calls in team selection. He selects form & fitness over seniority. Dhoni persuades the selection committee to start looking at a core team for 2011 WC.
The changes work and India wins the ODI series in Aus. He is then signed by the CHennai franchise in IPL. Dhoni meets Sakshi (Kiara Advani) when she is working as a hotel receptionist in Kolkata. Dhoni likes the fact that Sakshi doesn't know who Dhoni is. Dhoni starts dating Sakshi. Soon the media gets hold of the story and Sakshi doesn't like the spotlight. Dhoni proposes to Sakshi and they get married in 2010. in 2011 WC final, Dhoni promotes himself up the batting order & wins it from India with his trademark "helicopter" shot.
