do they give acting awards for graphic novel adaptations?
A_Different_Drummer28 December 2015
I suppose, as an IMDb Top Reviewer, I should already know the answer but in fact I don't. From memory, and I have seen a lot of TV (from back when when they showed only test patterns during daylight and there was no actual TV until it got dark).

I cannot recall ever seeing an acting award given for essentially a comic book adaption.

There is a scene in this episode where Ritter's character (Jessica) finds that she has been targeted by someone who is biased against "special people" and that someone wants to kill her. While that theme alone is hardly new (Heroes Reborn beats it to death each week, very painfully) Ritter's performance is way beyond what is expected. And in fact it draws attention to the fact that her performance in the entire series is way beyond what is expected. This deserves acknowledgement.

Great episode. The writing is sharp. The cop who apologizes for almost killing (against his will) by explaining how he "defended Barbie" when he was little ... also memorable.

Lots of good TV these days. My top-2 "most interesting and unpredictable" shows are Banshee and Jessica Jones. In fact if they weren't from different series, I would consider introducing them.

What have we, or the mentally challenged, ever done to you?

Warning: Spoilers
This seemed like sort of a filler episode but I am happy that it wasn't. There is some phenomenal acting by Ritter. A great budding friendship/romance between two characters. There is an insight into what Kilgrave has done to people and it was depressing, funny and kind of odd. The ending is also great that delivered another cliffhanger.

Let's start with the case that Jessica had: the Eastmans. It did seem like filler to allow the side plots to catch up but it did help with the main plots too. This allowed Jessica to look into police cam footage with help from the eager cop Simpson. We also got a tremendous scene with Jessica unleashing her rage against the Eastmans when she finally snaps about how she has lost people. It was a great job by Ritter by making Jessica terrifying and sympathetic at the same time.

Speaking of Simpson, he went to try and mend fences with Trish after Kilgrave made him go try to kill her. I felt that it did evolve naturally from Trish being scared of him, to talking to him with caution to sharing stories and allowing him in for coffee. I like these two characters, especially Trish, and they bring a good change of optimism to this show.

Kilgrave this episode was more on the effects of him than the actual character himself. It was hilarious hearing what some people said to try and get off for certain crimes as well as just the crazies that came in. However, there was some things that make me kind of realize that, Hogarth was kind of right, that Kilgrave has low ambition if some what he is asked for is a nice coat, some cello music and a pretty smile. Like this guy could tell Tony Stark to do stuff but he's just living the lavish life in Hell's Kitchen. That doesn't mean there weren't some sad stories though. The story of the man leaving his son was just gutwrenching. The fact that Kilgrave would do that just for a driver is despicable (in a good way for his character). And the fact he got divorced and lost any custody for his child is even worse for the events that Kilgrave sets in place for his own selfish needs. This show is doing a great job showing what trauma can be dished out by a man in power.

As I mentioned the cliffhanger in this episode is amazing. The photographer that is following her around is (SPOILERS): Malcolm! That is incredible. First off because he is a junkie that no one would look twice at so it's the perfect cover but also it opens the door to the possibility of him being found by Kilgrave before or after the drugs.

+ Ritter + Trish/Simpson + Fun scenes countered by heartbreaking scenes +Cliffhanger - Eastmans felt like a quick detour - Kilgrave could do so much better/worse

Final Score: 8.6/10

The paranoia deepens as Jessica makes an ally and discovers an enemy.
TouchTheGarlicProduction21 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Jessica makes an unexpected ally in the form of the now free-minded cop from last episode. This confused me; I had thought that the only reason he wasn't coming back to kill Trish was that he still thought she was dead. But Jessica explains later in the episode that the mind control wears off after a while if not re-applied, so that's all well and good.

The best part of the episode was when them combing through people claiming to have been controlled by Kilgrave. It was done montage style, and was the funniest thing in this series so far. I loved some of the fake stories people made up. It also provided some more chilling true Kilgrave stories.

Jessica deals with some clients ending in an explicit tie-in to the MCU, and tracks down the person following her. The episode ends in a chilling reveal. It's a cool twist, but I wish it had been directed in a slightly clearer way; I couldn't tell whether I was just imagining it the first time I watched it. If that had been a choice to make the viewer uncertain, that would be cool, but I'm sure it wasn't.

Working the Case
Hitchcoc27 July 2019
Jessica seems to be sidetracked. She does need money to live although her super powers could get her along just fine. Here forces who represent the possibility of trust engage. Jessica takes a case which could have been suspicious. There is a great scene where she has been set up...

A good, self-contained, episode
Tarx30922 May 2016
This episode was good in itself, even if the overall plot didn't advance at all. It was half about Jessica's new client, and half about finding witnesses and the cop trying to reconcile himself. The only problem was that the latter didn't seem particularly necessary and didn't accomplish much, although there were some great scenes between the cop and Trish that made up for that. The other half of the episode, revolving around Jessica's new client, was where this episode really shined. There was a continual sense of mystery around what was really going on with this client, and for once in this show it was hard to figure out what was going to happen next. The conclusion to this storyline, which was very self-contained, was a high for this series and also can now be seen as a close link to Captain America: Civil War (Jessica even backed this up by mentioning the Avengers).

Overall a good episode (that unfortunately was nothing more than filler), even if it was a shame that we didn't get another look at Kilgrave; and the reveal at the end was certainly unexpected.

Filler

Warning: Spoilers
Another average episode. The plotting builds on what's come previously without ever being outstanding or even particularly engaging. One of those episodes I call 'filler', treading water until something important happens.
