Apple TV+ today announced release dates for a slew of new and returning series on the first day of the Television Critics Association’s Winter 2024 press tour. Apple TV+ has just unveiled the first-look images from Dark Matter, a science fiction thriller series adapted from the highly successful novel by renowned author Blake Crouch. The limited series, which will take place over nine episodes, stars Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, and Oakes Fegley. Set to make its worldwide premiere on Apple TV+ on May 8, 2024, Dark Matter will launch with its first two episodes, with subsequent episodes releasing every Wednesday until June 26. Warner Bros. has undated Bong Joon-ho’s “Mickey 17,” starring Robert Pattinson. The studio also announce a move of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” to a March 29 release date.

Sources tell Variety that the decision to move the highly anticipated sci-fi movie from the Korean filmmaker was made to allow more time to finish the project, which had been affected due to last year’s strikes and other various production shifts. Thus, the latest installment in Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s “Godzilla and Kong” franchise, which was previously scheduled to hit theaters on April 12, will now debut two weeks earlier.

Veteran producer Dylan Massin (The West Wing) has been named EVP of Production for Sony Pictures Television Studios. Massin, who reports to Spts President Katherine Pope, assumes the Head of Production role from Ed Lammi, who retired in December after a 36-year career at the studio. Massin will oversee all physical production for the U.S. scripted studio, including pre-production/budgeting, production, and post-production teams.

Additionally, Spts’ SVP of Production Adam Moos has been promoted to SVP of Production and Head of Production Operations, reporting to Massin. Both Massin and Moos begin their new roles today.

“Dylan is one of the most respected producers in the business, and I know he will bring his deep experience, his drive for perfection, and his leadership to our shows, our teams, our showrunners and our partners,” Pope said.

Sony Pictures Television Studios has named Dylan Massin as executive vice president of production, while senior vice president of production Adam Moos has been promoted to add head of production operations to his title. Both began their new roles on Wednesday.

Massin enters the role following the December retirement of Ed Lammi, who worked at the studio for 36 years. Massin will oversee all physical production for the U.S. scripted studio, including pre-production, budgeting, production and post-production teams for development and active production slates, leading more than 30 staffers. He reports to studio president Katherine Pope.

He joins Sony Pictures Television after more than 30 years as a producer, with credits including “The West Wing,” “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” “Pushing Daisies,” “Parenthood,” “Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life,” “Get Shorty,” “Good Girls,” “Your Honor” and “Star Trek: Picard.” In addition to producing, Massin has also directed episodes of both comedy and drama series.

Apple TV+ has the opportunity to learn from the mistakes of the Wayward Pines TV show by making Blake Crouch's Dark Matter adaptation a limited series, preserving the integrity of the source material. With a limited series, more content from the novel can be explored and included in the production compared to a feature film adaptation. Having Blake Crouch as showrunner for Dark Matter allows him to oversee the adaptation and ensure that the original narrative of the book is not compromised, improving upon the lack of consistency in Wayward Pines.

Sony Pictures Television has promoted Andrew Plotkin to EVP of drama development for Sony Pictures Television Studios, the company announced Thursday.

After joining Spt as SVP of drama development in 2017, Plotkin takes over the role as former EVP Lauren Stein was tapped last week to become head of creative for Sony Picture Television Studios. She had been in the EVP role since 2011. In the new role, Plotkin will oversee the studios’ development of scripted drama series across platforms, and will continue to report to Stein.

Stein has been head of drama development at Sony TV since 2017. In the new role, Stein will oversee drama and comedy development, TriStar Television, international co-productions, and current programming on series in their first year of production. Jason Clodfelter is leaving Sony Pictures Television after a nearly two-decade run.

Clodfelter, who most recently served as co-president of the studio under the recently installed Katherine Pope, has joined Legendary Television and will become the president of the studio behind shows including Amazon’s Carnival Row. He will work closely with vice chairman of worldwide production Mary Parent to develop new scripted series across all platforms.

Clodfelter replaces Chris Albrecht atop Legendary TV. Albrecht, the former Starz chief, was placed on administrative leave at Legendary in October 2022 after new details emerged about the executive’s former time at HBO. He departed not long afterward and this week launched a Spanish-language media studio.

The producer will be serving her second consecutive one-year term and was widely expected to take the reins once again. With Hollywood typically being an unstoppable machine that pushes thousands of movies out of its production line every year, sometimes it's easy to forget that making movies can be an act of defiance. For instance, in the case of the Iranian film industry, being a filmmaker means submitting to censorship or facing persecution by the government, possibly even risking your freedom. With that in mind, it's a wonder that Iranian director Karim Lakzaheh managed to shoot Dark Matter, a provocative film about the potency of filmmaking. However, as essential as it might be as a political tool, its experimental approach to storytelling challenges the audience's ability to connect with it.

The 2023 Karlovy Vary Film Festival is dedicating a decent chunk of its programming to Iranian cinema, a special retrospective section entitled ‘Another Birth: Iranian Cinema Here and Now’ showcasing nine films from the country made over the last four years.

While Iran’s recent nationwide protests, sparked in September 2022 when Mahsa Amini died in police custody after being arrested for violating Iran’s hijab law, and the brutal and widely condemned government crackdown that followed weren’t explicitly mentioned by the festival, it did say the films selected offered an “insightful testimony of the burning creativity of Iran’s artists in face of the challenging reality.”

But a new series is coming to the streaming service that captures the wild imaginations surrounding time travel, alternate worlds/timelines, and quantum physics. The 27th edition of Fantasia International Film Festival (July 20-August 9) in Montreal will open with the North American premiere of Pascal Plante’s cyber thriller Red Rooms (Chambres Rouges).

Many of the actors in The Hunger Games are familiar faces. Actor Dayo Okeniyi appeared as Danny Dyson in Terminator Genisys alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and Emilia Clarke. Okeniyi also made an appearance in horror movies Run Sweetheart Run and Fresh, and he starred in the 2022 biographical sports drama Rise. He's set to take part in an upcoming TV series called Dark Matter, starring Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly.

In The Hunger Games, Okeniyi portrayed Thresh, the male Tribute from District 11 and Rue's District partner. While Okeniyi gets a modest amount of screen time in The Hunger Games, he nevertheless brings an intensity to the role thanks to his strong presence. And although Thresh's role in The Hunger Games is quite small, he's anything but insignificant.

Warner Bros Discovery (Wbd) has removed its bouquet of 14 channels from Indonesia’s TV largest platform, Mnc, ending decades-long affiliate arrangements, Content Asia reported. The decision, confirmed by Wbd, involves channels from HBO and Cartoon Network to Discovery and TLC, all of which came off air on May 12. The move is understood to be the culmination of a payments disagreement. In November last year, beIN removds its sports service from Mnc. Wbd content remains available on three smaller platforms in Indonesia, IndiHome First Media and Trans.

The Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival, Eastern and Central Europe’s leading cinema event, has unveiled its lineup, which includes new works by Pascal Plante, Stephan Komandarev, Tinatin Kajrishvili and Babak Jalali in the Crystal Globes Competition. They will vie against films by up-and-comers Ernst De Geer, Itsaso Arana and Cyril Aris. The section has nine world and two international premieres. Oscar-nominated actor Patricia Clarkson is one of the jury members.

The Proxima Competition, which made its debut at last year’s Kviff, presents what the festival defines as “bold works,” directed by young filmmakers and renowned auteurs alike. The section comprises of 10 world and two international premieres. The festival says “playfulness, courage and freshness can be found” in the new films by Swiss auteur Thomas Imbach, Poland’s Olga Chajdas, Cyprus-born Kyros Papavassiliou, French filmmaker Émilie Brisavoine and Romanian documentarist Alexandru Solomon, among others.

Obi-Wan Kenobi's Joel Edgerton can trace his career opportunities back to George Lucas casting him in Star Wars.

Speaking to NME about his new role in Paul Schrader's Master Gardener, Edgerton reflected on the personal impact of playing young Owen Lars in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones over 20 years ago. "I owe so much in my career to George [Lucas, Star Wars; creator] giving me that job," he said, explaining how "it opened all the doors to Hollywood. It allowed everyone in L.A. to kind of welcome me and go, 'Oh, he's in Star Wars. Let's give him an audition for other things.'" For Edgerton, reprising that part in Obi-Wan Kenobi was "a way to complete a circle of some kind."

Until the great gears at Amazon start turning and give us a new Stargate series, we’ll have to make do with the classics. Fortunately, Stargate Sg-1 gave us 10 seasons, two spin-offs (three if you count Stargate Infinity... which you don’t), and two direct-to-home movies (three if you count Stargate Origins... which you don’t).

Unfortunately, unless you still have your treasured DVD box set and still have a DVD player in 2023, it can be a full-time job trying to work out where to stream Stargate Sg-1.

Directed by Melanie Orr from a screenplay by William Tyler Bell, Harm’s Way has the following synopsis: The proprietor of a women’s shelter jeopardizes the relationship between an abused mother and daughter. Darlene and her daughter Victoria seek refuge at a remote rural safe house for abused women that’s run by the strict and tough, but folksy and supportive Bea. Things turn sour when Bea proves to be a total lunatic with an especially dangerous influence on the impressionable Victoria.

Maintaining the location library of 20,000 photos is one of Illinois Film Office assistant deputy director Louis Ferrara’s favorite parts of his job. “Producers always laugh when I say that, but it’s true,” he says.

The massive quantity of location photos are categorized into various curated files so when productions have a need, the film office can readily supply whatever they desire.

“We scout locations on a regular basis to freshen up the library,” says Ferrara, noting that they also send letters to homeowners and businesses to help with continually growing the resource. An amazing dinner scene in Star Trek: Discovery season 3, episode 4, "Forget Me Not," helped usher in a new and better direction for the show. Discovery underwent a massive shakeup at the beginning of season 3 as Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) led the USS Discovery on a one-way trip into the 32nd century. Burnham arrived in the year 3188, a full year before her starship joined her, and Star Trek: Discovery season 3 dealt with the ramifications of the 23rd century Starfleet Officers voluntarily stranding themselves 930 years from home.

Star Trek: Discovery season 3 created the farthest known point in the franchise's timeline. In the 32nd century, Discovery was unshackled from its previous prequel trappings and was free to be the tip of Star Trek's spear and to blaze new canon. Star Trek: Discovery has featured some compelling antagonists over its first four seasons, as well as its fair share of villainous misfires. Originally set a decade before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series, Discovery has been one of the more controversial entries in the Star Trek franchise. Discovery season 1 was notoriously shaky, as it leaned into a dark, violent tone and featured plenty of technological anachronisms. The show found its footing in the much-improved season 2, and boldly reset its premise when the titular vessel traveled to the 32nd century for season 3 and beyond.

Discovery has never been particularly defined by its villains, as most of its focus has been on its Starfleet crew like Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the Kelpien officer Saru (Doug Jones). That's not to say Discovery hasn't had some great villain turns, particularly early on when the show was still struggling to find an identity.
