Ruth Wilson, star of The Affair, Luther and His Dark Materials, has performed with many leading actors, usually one at a time, but in May her endurance will be put to the test when she embarks on a marathon stage show in London playing the same scene almost nonstop for 24 hours with one hundred different men — one after the other.
“Yes, a hundred is enough,” she laughs.
“It’s a huge act of stamina,” she tells me of The Second Woman, a title inspired by a play that’s at the center of John Cassavetes’s 1977 movie Opening Night starring Gena Rowlands. ”I dunno how I’m going to get through it and that’s part of the appeal to me,” she adds.
For a split second her face looks stricken as she tells me “I will lose any sense of performance as the show goes on,” she sighs, though...

It looks like Martin Scorsese is finally almost finished with his upcoming film The Irishman and ready to screen it for audiences! The highly anticipated crime epic is set to have its world premiere as the Opening Night film of the 57th New York Film Festival. Along with that news comes a first look at the film thanks to two photos that have been released that you can see below.
The Irishman is based on Charles Brandt’s book, I Heard You Paint Houses: Frank ‘The Irishman’ Sheeran & Closing the Case on Jimmy Hoffa, and there's a lot of controversy surrounding the story as it's based on the deathbed confession of Frank "The Irishman” Sheeran. The movie stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Harvey Keitel, Ray Romano, Anna Paquin, and Bobby Cannavale. Many of the actors will be de-aged for the film as the story spans over decades.

Based on the book I Heard You Paint Houses, the crime drama brings together Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Harvey Keitel, Ray Romano, Anna Paquin, and Bobby Cannavale in the story of Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, a mob hitman whose illustrious career is today best-known for supposed involvement in the death of Jimmy Hoffa. Singer-songwriter Jessica Pratt hails from California — both Southern and Northern — and her first LP pegged her as one part late-Sixties Laurel Canyon, one part early 2000s freak folk. Her style blossomed on her 2015 follow-up, On Your Own Love Again, with stranger melodies (one song is even called “Strange Melody”) and spacier arrangements. Quiet Signs, her third LP, expands her sound still further. “Opening Night” begins with a piano incantation, idly conjuring Satie’s Gymnopédies and Gershwin’s “Summertime.” It segueways into “As The World Turns,” echoing the same chords, but...

Chicago – What is “greatness”? Is it an undefinable element in human beings that no one can explain, or can we get insight if we listen to those who have achieved it? Documentary filmmaker Gabe Polsky (“Red Army”) went on a journey to understand the concept in his new film, “In Search of Greatness.”
The focus is on athletes, in the sense of how one stands out from another, given the same parameters available to physically gifted people. Polsky explores the “it” factor, from pro hockey (Wayne Gretzky), pro football (Jerry Rice) and international soccer (Pelé). The filmmaker delves deeply, with commentary by social scientists and creativity experts. It turns out that the quality of greatness is part mystery, part happenstance and part being in the right place/time at any given moment, along with a unique passion for getting it done. This is a fascinating documentary, sprinkled with a bit of magic.

"The people are desperate for justice..." Netflix has released a second trailer for their historical action epic Outlaw King, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last month as the Opening Night film. This film by acclaimed director David Mackenzie tells a "David v. Goliath story" of how the great 14th Century Scottish "Outlaw King'" Robert The Bruce used cunning and bravery to defeat and repel the much larger and better equipped occupying English army. Filmed entirely in Scotland, Outlaw King reunites Mackenzie with actor Chris Pine, who plays Robert the Bruce. The film also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Florence Pugh, Billy Howle, Tony Curran, Stephen Dillane, James Cosmo, and Sam Spruell. The reviews out of Tiff were mixed, some saying it's pretty good, some saying it's pretty bad, so it's really up to you and whether this looks like an interesting enough film to watch. At least the massive action scenes look exciting.

"They're like fertility junkies!" Netflix has debuted an official trailer for the indie dramedy Private Life, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year as the Opening Night film. Private Life is the latest film by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Tamara Jenkins and it's about a couple in New York dealing with the challenges of infertility and conceiving. Kathryn Hahn plays an author undergoing multiple fertility therapies to get pregnant, putting her relationship with her husband, played by Paul Giamatti, on edge. The full cast includes Kayli Carter, Molly Shannon, Emily Robinson, Francesca Root-Dodson, and Tracee Chimo. This is a very classy, sensitive film, balanced with some smart humor, and it received mostly positive reviews out of Sundance. I highly recommend this. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Tamara Jenkins' Private Life, direct from Netflix's YouTube: Private Life is the bracingly funny and moving story of Richard (Paul Giamatti...

Natalie Portman shows up in the second half of “Vox Lux” like a hurricane, bursting into writer-director Brady Corbet’s mesmerizing portrait of self-absorbed pop star and overtaking the story. As Celeste, a beloved singer who survived a mass shooting in her youth and has been corrupted by fame, Portman embodies the sheer lunacy of modern popular culture.
At the Q&A for the movie at the Toronto International Film Festival, Portman described her performance as “this commodification of everything, where violence becomes something you sell, news becomes something you sell, even private life does.” She singled out a scandal in the movie’s plot that finds armed gunmen wearing masks from one of Celeste’s music videos in a terrorist attack. “What brings a terrorist and a pop star in alignment is that people paying attention to them makes them valuable and gives them power,” she said. “That kind...

Emmy episode analysis: Larry David (‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’) hilariously fumbles his ‘Fatwa!’ musical
Larry David took a six-year hiatus from playing himself on his HBO comedy series “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” but this year Emmy voters seemed “pretty, pretty, pretty” enthused about his return. In addition to David’s sixth nomination for Best Comedy Actor, the long-running comedy earned three other bids this year, including Best Comedy Series. David, who previously won two Emmys for writing and producing “Seinfeld” in 1993, has submitted the ninth season finale, “Fatwa!,” for Emmy voters’ consideration.
In the episode, Larry prepares for the first performances of his new stage musical, “Fatwa!,” a comedy loosely based on the real-life fatwa issued against award-winning author Salman Rushdie. As the curtain nears, Larry agrees to house two of star Lin-Manuel Miranda’s unruly and unappreciative cousins, prepares to give a toast at the wedding of his friend and manager Jeff’s (Jeff Garlin) daughter, and plans a paintball excursion for the “Fatwa!

Another year, another edition of the Lima Film Festival opens its doors. With Fiction and Documentary competitions that tend to favor dramas and social issues -- though sometimes a few oddballs stick out; this year, the brilliant Brazilian werewolf tale Good Manners and Argentina’s metaphorical head-scratcher of a monster movie Murder Me, Monster are representing genre cinema -- the Fest tends to save its crowd-pleasing lightweights for Opening Night, to gently ease audiences into its nine days of programming. The Film Society of Lincoln Center has set the Yorgos Lanthimos-directed The Favourite as the Opening Night selection for the 56th New York Film Festival. Deadline revealed last week that the film will make its world premiere at Venice, so this will be its New York premiere. That indicates it likely gets a showing at Telluride before the Nyff gala at Alice Tully Hall on Friday, September 28, 2018. Fox Searchlight Pictures releases it November 23. This becomes the second pic announced by Nyff, which recently set Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma to be the centerpiece selection. That film also will have its world premiere in Venice.
In The Favourite, the Duchess of Marlborough (Rachel Weisz) and her servant Abigail Hill (Emma Stone) engage in a sexually charged fight to the death for the body and soul of Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) at the height of the War of the Spanish Succession.

The 90th Academy Awards have come and gone (after what felt like a longer than ever Oscar season) and we’re upon yet another one of our yearly film festival markers. The annual music and film industry hybrid festival SXSW – celebrating its 25th year- begins this week and, as per usual, there’s plenty of variety in the full lineup to choose from. The popular festival will be the stage for the debut of “A Quiet Place” as the Opening Night film, a chance for director/actor John Krasinski to redeem himself from the uniquely bad “The Hollars“.

Friday Night Double Feature: The Ladykillers and La poison
Criminal schemes take unlikely targets in these two pitch-dark comedies from the 1950s. In Alexander Mackendrick’s Ealing Studio farce The Ladykillers (1955), a team of thieves (led by Alec Guinness) descends on a boardinghouse run by an elderly widow, who becomes the victim of their misdeeds. In Sacha Guitry’s brisk, witty, and savage La poison (1951), a gardener (Michel Simon) and his wife, fed up after thirty years of marriage, find themselves plotting each other’s murder.

In 1993, after not being accepted into any major film festival of the time, such as Sundance, filmmaker Todd Phillips personally toured the U.S. and Europe with his first documentary film, Hated: Gg Allin & The Murder Junkies. Following this experience, Phillips partnered up with fellow filmmaker Andrew Gurland to launch several initiatives to help small, challenging and often controversial films connect with audiences.
One of those initiatives was the first ever New York Underground Film and Video Festival, which was held at the Anthology Film Archives in New York City on March 18-20, 1994.
The term “underground film” was first used to describe the experimental film scene in 1961 by filmmaker and film theorist Stan Vanderbeek. Using “underground film” to describe the avant-garde cinema remained popular throughout the ’60s, then lost popularity in the ’70s as terms like “structural film” came into existence. “Underground film” ultimately regained some of its mojo...

2017-11-17T12:08:04-08:00'Justice League' Has a Decent Opening Night
It's starting to look like Warner Bros' DC movie universe is a solid money maker, but not nearly on the scale of Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe. Justice League, the centerpiece of the DC universe thus far, debuted on Thursday night to $13 million in ticket sales. That's a bit ahead of the preview take of this summer's DC film Wonder Woman and a bit behind that of last month's Marvel release, Thor: Ragnarok.
It's important to note, however, that Thor was not considered to be in the forefront of Marvel's Avengers-centric franchise, and Wonder Woman did increasingly big business as a result of stellar word of mouth. Justice League, in contrast, comes to theaters with considerably more negative reviews than Wonder Woman did, a fact that does not bode well for Jl's staying power.

In Nazi-occupied France, lauded musician Django Reinhardt — considered by many to be the first “guitar hero” — had two strikes against him: he was a jazz musician and he was a Gypsy. The Nazis loathed both groups, and in 1933, made that hatred part of the fabric of their government, banning banning most jazz (after over a decade of general suppression) and barring Gypsies from living in cities, instead forcing them into settlement camps.
Ten years later, Reinhardt was still able to find success at his art, but his beloved city of Paris was under Nazi control and the walls were starting to close in. That’s where Etienne Comar’s heartbreaking biopic “Django” opens, carrying its eponymous subject through an unbelievable story of survival, one bolstered by a love of art and creativity that no fascist regime could snuff out. The film opened the Berlin Film Festival this year, and is...

What makes AFI Fest different from other high-profile festivals is also what makes it essential: Its programmers don’t care about premiere status. Each edition of the annual gathering tends to feature just a few, often on the first and last nights of the weeklong event, though there have been exceptions — 2014 saw back-to-back surprise debuts of both “American Sniper” and “Selma” on the same night.

The only world premiere scheduled was Ridley Scott’s “All the Money in the World,” which initially received pride of place as the closing-night gala; because the film starred Kevin Spacey before he was replaced with Christopher Plummer at the last minute, it’s since been pulled from the schedule. Princess CydStephen Cone has been making movies at a steady clip for over a decade and yet remains largely unknown. It is a momentous and wholly deserved occasion then for him to receive a retrospective at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York. Despite mixed receptions and even more erratic distribution patterns, his collection of films isn’t as motley as one might think. While each might tiptoe in a different direction, they maintain a hand in the Stephen Cone universe, imprinted by the same particular humanistic insight. In one of his earliest films, In Memoriam (2011), a young man so subsumed with the sudden death of a couple, fallen from a roof during the throes of pleasure, conducts his own investigation into their ill-fated demise. Innocuous curiosity masks what is essentially an existential inquiry and takes a self-referential pivot when he decides to recreate and film the events,...

Over the years, no one has quite captured the feeling of just spending time with friends on the big screen like Richard Linklater has. It’s an amazing skill for which he doesn’t quite get the credit he deserves. Yes, he’s feted often and this skill is mentioned, but to be able to do it like he does is really something. This week, and today, actually, audiences can see Linklater once again chronicle individuals just spending time with each other, as Last Flag Flying is being released. This is a terrific movie, among the best of the year. Linklater has done it again. He’s on quite the run lately, between this, Everybody Wants Some, and of course, Boyhood. Once more, a description for those of you not aware what this one is about. The film is a sequel of sorts to The Last Detail, though familiarity with that picture is hardly required.

Two Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences governors told me that Academy board members are discussing whether Harvey Weinstein should continue as a member. An impromptu board meeting is expected sometime this week. It’s worth noting that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences board of governors is now one-third female, with members who include Whoopi Goldberg, Kimberly Peirce, and Christina Kounelias.
This would be a stunning reversal: By the count of The Weinstein Company’s website, his companies earned 303 Oscar nominations and 75 wins over three decades. Harvey could be the butt of Oscar jokes, but historically was the second most-thanked person in acceptance speeches, after Steven Spielberg.
