All eyes on Ava
Mr-Fusion7 July 2017
'Sounding' comes off like a showcase for the colorful criminal elements of "Justfied", even while Raylan takes almost a backseat role this week. He's mostly here just to track down Ava, gone rogue in a desperate attempt to flee her situation. And it's her show, being the character who's genuinely trapped. It's one of those episodes that leaves you hanging as the end credits roll.

There's another plus side in the return of Both Constable Bob and the sadistic side of Wynn Duffy, torturing a guy for information (the cattle prod was a nice touch).

Another beautiful episode, this show can't do no wrong

Warning: Spoilers
If people were willing to have a better season that season 5, they're actually getting it, even though there's a little bit of a slow pace right now, with Raylan being like the opposite of his shoot to kill persona, I can say he actually matured and learned how to be a good marshal now, because finally he realized all he's got to do is bring Boyd to prison and meet with his daughter.

Ava has been a little over-the-top this season, but I feel like she improved a lot on this episode compared to the first four, after all the events transpired, she seems more calm for the job, and maybe she's finally trusting Raylan to back her up.

It seems like Limehouse is once again playing a big part this season, even if he doesn't have as much screen time as he got on season 3, according to the preview for the next episode, he will be the one shaking things up and bring Boyd up to what's happening.

We're almost halfway through the season, and I just can't wait for what's left in the tank of Justified, a show so good that it keeps it's A- game even with their final season.

MVP's:

Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant).

Ava Crowder (Joelle Carter).

Wynn Duffy (Jere Burns).

good news, bad news, good news, etc etc
A_Different_Drummer26 February 2015
Good news -- we finally get to see Joelle Carter's acting chops. Her take on a squeezed in the middle good-old-gal informant who would rather be anywhere else but where she is ... is solid.

Bad news -- the limelight for Carter comes at the expense of screen time for our hero, now our executive producer, the ever charismatic Mr. Olyphant, who is now playing a part so low-key (compared to the way he EXPLODED onto the screen in Season 1) that he may as well phone it in. I cannot remember any series remaining successful when its star decided to become a backseat driver...?

Good news -- took over 6 and a half seasons but your intrepid reviewer finally and belatedly figured out what is so startling about Goggins' portrayal of Boyd. He is doing Burt Lancaster. Seriously. Hear me out. The smile, the speech patterns, the deliberate tilt of the head, the physicality... it is all there. Whether Goggins admits it or not, he owes a large part of his success to incorporating Lancaster into his acting. Took me so long (apologies, Dominus) because he has a small frame and one could not easily imagine doing Burt without the size. But here we are ...

Bad news -- Goggins and Carter are not enough. I know the fans will punish this review but I always say what I see. This series is fading. As the competition in TV drama heats up -- POI, BLACKLIST, the incredible BANSHEE, and even the sly pacing of LONGMIRE -- this series is slowly losing its edge, like a tire with a slow leak.

Great except for a main plot driver being a huge error
david_w_gibson5 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The series is great and so is this episode, except for a main plot device it revealed, that I speculated was wrong from beginning of season 6, to be a fact. That is, if the jail guard that accused Ava of stabbing him actually did recant his testimony against her, which is revealed to be the fact in this episode, then why is she still a forced CI which they constantly threaten to send back to prison? Up until this episode, I thought maybe they were just using the story that her accuser and the cellmate witness recanted to get her out of prison to make her a CI to get Boyd. But in this episode we find it as a fact, as Ava's false accuser got a deal also. If you remember, she was to get out of county jail the next day before the jail guard faked her stabbing him, which is why she was then sent to prison instead. With his testimony against her being recanted, they not only have no grounds to hold her, she also has good grounds to sue(guard was working for the county when he lied), like Dewey did previously, which is another reason they not only wouldn't, but couldn't force her to be a CI.

They then use this erroneous plot device through out the whole 6th season as a major plot driver.
