Sex & Nudity

  • Thirteen-year-old Lane sees a man and woman clasped tightly together motionless in Tantric sex. Seen from the side at a distance, the couple are fully nude but only butt cheeks are visible, no genitals or breasts/chest.
  • On a bus, Lane sees the arm motion of a man masturbating, his hand and genitals covered by a magazine.
  • A man tells Lane that making love is the highest high, not drugs.
  • A man's bare chest is briefly visible.

Violence & Gore

  • We hear a conversation about a man who was severely beaten for having long hair and possessing half a joint. Rifle-wielding locals are described as dangerous.
  • Abusive parent.

Profanity

  • About ten uses of "shit", sometimes literally, four of "f*ck", and a sprinkling of "goddamn", "hell", and "piss", half from the adults and half from the kids.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Infrequent and very brief views of adults smoking joints, a bong, and cigarettes. One scene of many elderly adults at a party, many of them smoking cigarettes and drinking socially. No intoxication shown throughout the film, although it is implied to happen offscreen in one scene.
  • A man and a woman drink a peyote concoction and go offscreen to experience a trip.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Intense emotional scenes, particularly related to the welfare of children, occur throughout the movie.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Lane is given a cup of peyote drink; she tastes it and gags and spits it out.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • There are numerous emotionally intense scenes, distressing to the characters and perhaps to viewers, throughout the film. These scenes relate to adults arguing over how children are raised, leaving one's only friends to never be seen again, and brothers and sisters being sent to separate households and perhaps not seen again.
  • The last half of the film is emotionally intense. Lane's pain is obvious when her mother repeatedly fails to provide adequate emotional or material support. Lane sometimes goes hungry, and we see the fear and shame she experiences at being found "stealing" water. She eventually runs away to seek a better life.
