The Healer
wickedmikehampton31 December 2020
'Foiled' made such impact that I invited people over to listen, telling them that they couldn;t speak until the album finished playing. However, one lady cried and said to me, "He's like me." She was bipolar.

I gave a copy to my best friend. he returned to me saying that it was the best thing that I'd done for him and his wife - it made her visit a psychiatrist to deal with her childhood trauma.

Thereafter, I had the joy of listening to the back catalogue. And then 'Argue With A Tree' became my favourite live album.

'Get Back Up' is brutally honest in our world of lies. I now understand why Blue October is one of the most underrated bands.

Interesting even for the casual fan

I thought the doc was pretty good. It had lots of old footage. I am surprised that it dealt so little with his mental health problems. A major focus on his drug problems...but nothing on his presecribed meds for his mental health. Its a piece of the puzzle that was left out IMHO. I watched a special preview of the Doc at home before the release. I watched it with a room of NON-fans. They enjoyed it too. I think that is a plus.

Solid but incomplete

Very good production. Seems to miss some opportunities to discuss the mental illness more. Time may have been the reason.

Just Beautiful

Wow. Damp eyes all the way through this. I usually can't sit through documentarys but this was different. I've been a big fan of B Oct for long time now and couldn't wait to watch this. I wasn't disappointed. Emotional roller coaster is the only way to describe it. Ten stars. (Some people have really got something against Blue October by the look of all the thumbs down. Jealousy?)

Thank you Justin

I fell in love with Blue October because of my husband. A man that suffers from anxiety and depression. Been to many shows, including acoustic...this opened up a whole new understanding of not only the band but Justin. Raw emotions, some I've kept buried for years. This music, his life, I can relate to. This is my therapy, my church, my belief. There is life beyond regret, pain, depression...and it's a damn good life. Thank you Blue October and Justin for sharing your beauty through life, music, and the pursuit of happiness. 💙

Life changing music, art, heart. GET BACK UP is a revelation.
genewellsemail17 July 2020
Justin Furstenfeld proves that no matter how hard you fall it is possible to Get Back Up. A long history of drugs and alcohol coupled with bi-polar disorder brought him to a point where he has to choose between impending death or a life of sobriety. Thankfully he chose life and this incredible documentary showcases how powerful that choice was, not only for Justin but everyone in his life and his army of devout followers. You do not have to know of or even be a fan of his band Blue October to appreciate the revelations that come from this once lost but brilliant artist's journey... After watching this documentary you have a driving need to share this film and message with anyone and everyone you know dealing with not only similar issues but anyone dealing with depression or a low moment in life. GET BACK UP is like Justin, life changing... in the best way possible.

This documentary is real, it's raw, and proves that even if you aren't a Blue October fan, no matter what you are going through that you can always make your life into what you want it to be.

Thank you Blue October for destigmatizing metal health issues. A history of a great band. More important a deeper understanding of dealing with mental health struggles.

A Powerful Story
jrcartwright-941-74804421 January 2021
I had not realized the incredible story behind the scenes or the power of connection that Blue October had with their fans. A band's lyrics can touch so many people in so many ways, but Blue October was able to connect deeper than anything I've experienced all told through this brilliant documentary. It's rare that we get to see the full story behind anyone's trials, tribulations, and success and the path that gets them there. Raw, beautiful, and angles from so many people's perspectives that touched the main characters' life. I'm inspired to listen to more Blue October and share their music with more people - with a focus of those who I fear may have some form of depression, but really anyone because we all go through life's ups and downs at some point and this music will ring true and help heal or help anyone through those times. Well worth the expense to rent for an eye-opening heartfelt story. There are plenty of parts throughout that will take you through a myriad of emotions and eventually make you smile.

Must watch!!!
kristabloom24 May 2020
Justin is such an inspiration to all. Watching such a personal story and watching his and the bands transformation really add new light to their music. Sheading light on mental illness has always been the goal of Blue Octobers and Justin's music but this sheads a whole new and relatable light. I can't wait to see what's around the corner for Justin and Blue October.

Outstanding
ckjphoto24 May 2020
I've been a fan since I'd say back in 2001. Blue October is raw and honest and has always been able to reach and help so many people. Myself included. From depression to drug abuse to being in an abusive relationship and finally finding myself and standing on my own. Raising my kids and bonding with my oldest son through their music, this documentary reaches even deeper. My son and I watched together and we both just cried throughout the film. Seeing the band build together, fall apart and rebuild, supporting an addict and bringing him out of it no matter what it took. Just incredible. Drug addiction is hard on an addict but even harder on those who love them and knowing what I've put people through in my own addiction, I'm just so thankful I survived and recovered. This world needs more people who can be so open about their past to help heal others and Blue October is just that band that heals. Thank you guys who helping me and so many others. Forever love y'all.

Raw and beautiful!!!

This documentary hit me in the gut just like all of Justin's lyrics do. I resonate on a profound level because my son's story is very similar. I found myself sobbing one minute and laughing the next. The Blue October fans waited a long time for this release and it did not disappoint. I am forever grateful to Justin and the band for putting words and music to the real things we go through. Blue October changed my life. Thank you 💙

Alternative Redemption
Shailimonkey28 June 2020
In "Get Back Up," we see an intimate retrospect into the life and mind of Blue October's beloved frontman, Justin Furstenfeld.

Justin is one of the lucky survivors from a long line-up of legendary alt-rock lyricists and performers who could not escape their despair and addictions. After seven years of cameras following this Texas-based band, and from rare interviews with his family and friends, we can begin to unravel the path that led to Justin's remarkable sobriety in this compelling documentary.

"Get Back Up" excels at squarely placing the spotlight on Justin in the context of his depression, emotional afflictions and addictions. One of the band's true masterpieces, a Blue October song called "Fear," features the powerful lyrics "Get back up" with equally powerful vocals, but it is not part of the film; I'd encourage anyone new to Blue October to listen to that song.

What happens when this young man gets "the best deal you've ever seen," along with the lifestyle that it entails? And what happens when tragedy strikes and nearly all of it is taken away from the band, time and time again?

This film also provides an unfiltered glimpse into Justin's role as a craftsman for beats and poetic lyrics that seem to burst out of him as he collaborates on new music. He shines and transforms into a charismatic artist that uses the stage as a sanctuary to expose and embody stories from his romantic heart in the band's performances.

Audiences everywhere continue to connect with Blue October. From a mix of old and new concert footage, you can see early seeds of the "Blue Family" planted firmly along the rail. To this day, fans feel like they are having a spiritual or near-religious experience at Blue October shows.

Like a true showman and vocal acrobat, Justin knows how to break the their hearts and make them fall in love again over the course of every show, even in the form of documentary.

I fell in love with this band all over again.
boucka24 May 2020
My husband and I have been Blue October fans since 2006. Their music has become a sort of soundtrack to our life together. There isn't enough space in this box to put into words how this band has affected me.

I've been looking forward to the documentary for years and it didn't disappoint. Hearing the raw and emotional testimonies from everyone was deeply touching. I learned a few things I didn't know. I became more aware of the extent of Justin's struggles, which made me admire his strength that much more.

I believe this film should be shown in rehabs, recovery programs, AA and NA meetings, and halfway houses across the country. So many lives stand to be changed by it.

Get Back Up delivers hope and inspiration
marisolrichardson24 May 2020
As someone who has followed Blue October and Justin Furstenfeld's career since late 90's, I have watched the ups and downs, the highs and lows. Through it all, my love for the music and the band has never waivered. After watching this exceptional documentary you will get a first hand look at how life make take you off your course through obstacles and hard times, but just know you can make it through. The candid interviews show how mental illness and drug addiction affect not only the one using, but every one around. The same applies for recovery as the love and hope affects each and every one of those involved. Truly amazing documentary and I highly recommend it. - Music Junkie Press

A Long-time Fan
ambeck2224 May 2020
Seeing this as a fan and as someone who lost her only sibling to a heart attack from long-term drug abuse after that sibling was recovering is heart-wrenching and depressing. However, I'm very grateful and proud of Justin and Blue October for putting this out there. Justin is an open book and gives his all to his art and fans and family. Making amazing, relatable, ever-evolving music on top of that is icing on the cake. A must-see for BO fans.

Heartbreakingly beautiful
kimlargetx24 May 2020
I was shattered by this beautiful work of art. I have been a very long time fan of Blue October and Justin Furstenfeld so I know the basics.... but wow. To see what it did to the ones that loved him? And how he felt when beginning recovery?? Reminded me so much of what I went through with my brother. He is such an amazing person, singer, songwriter..... an absolute artist!!! I just want to tell his brother that I KNOW.... the pain on his brothers face! And then what are we left with in the end? Redemption, strength, love and hope. This group is so inspirational and I hope that they realize just much they helped many different types of people in many situations. Nothing but love!
