Paramount Plus and CBC have partnered on the drama series “Skymed.”

The series is produced by Piazza Entertainment in association with CBC and CBS Studios. It is currently in production in Manitoba and Ontario and will be available to stream on Paramount Plus in 2022.

The series follow the triumphs, heartbreaks and tribulations of budding nurses and pilots flying air ambulances in remote Northern Canada. The cast includes: Natasha Calis (“Nurses”), Ace (Aason) Nadjiwan (“Batwoman”), Morgan Holmstrom (“Siberia”), Praneet Akilla (“Nancy Drew”), Thomas Elms (“The Order”), Mercedes Morris (“Between”), Kheon Clarke (“Riverdale”), Rebecca Kwan (“Taken”), Braeden Clarke (“Outlander”), and Aaron Ashmore (“Killjoys”).

Oscar-winning writer-director Terry George (Hotel Rwanda) and Egyptian writer Mariam Naoum (Between Two Seas) have been attached to co-write the serial killer series The Alexandria Killings from Front Row Filmed Entertainment and Rocket Science’s Middle East-based Yalla Yalla.

Set in 1920 Alexandria when Egypt was under British rule, the series will chronicle the true story of Egyptian sisters Raya and Sakina. The sisters came from a poor Alexandria neighborhood and rose from poverty to run a glamorous brothel operation, drawing on a powerful and influential circle of Egyptian and British officers, informants, and statesmen. The rise and fall of their empire found the sisters relying more and more on petty theft, leading to the murder of 17 women in crimes of opportunity.

Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival (Cph:Dox) has revealed its line-up of competition titles for 2021, set to run April 21 to May 2.

The programme includes films that focus on the dominance of tech giants, new democratic movements, decolonization and climate change among other topics.

The competition programmes consist of 64 titles with 47 world premieres, nine international premieres and six European premieres. In total, 58% of the titles (37 films) are directed by one or more women. This increases to 66% when including films co-directed by male and female directors.

ESPN has expanded its first “MegaCast” of Sunday’s NFL Wild Card playoff game to include streaming service ESPN+ and five Disney networks: ESPN, ABC, ESPN2, Freeform and ESPN Deportes.

With days to spare before the opening night of this year’s Thessaloniki Intl. Film Festival, organizers were suddenly forced to contend with a dramatic spike in coronavirus cases in Greece’s second city, prompting them to scrap plans for a hybrid edition and move entirely online.

The sudden reversal, said festival director Orestis Andreadakis, was “really, really difficult,” but not entirely unforeseen, as the country grapples with a second wave of Covid-19 that has far outpaced the first wave in the spring. The previously postponed Queer East Film Festival returns to cinemas across the UK with an additional seven films added to the original programme this October. Reimagined as a season-long showcase, the festival’s in-person cinema screenings will now go beyond London to include Manchester, Nottingham and Bristol, as well as offer UK-wide virtual screenings for audiences to enjoy at home.

Queer East is a celebration of queer storytelling and activism in East and Southeast Asia and aims to uplift and amplify the voices of those marginalised in the LGBTQ+ community. Broken Lizard founding member Steve Lemme recently sat down with Seven Days and pretty much revealed that the highly anticipated “Super Troopers 2” is arriving on April 20, 2018. The film wrapped production last month after a historic crowdfunding campaign raised $4.4 million.

“There is [a release date], but I can’t tell you what it is,” Lemme said. “Here’s what I can tell you: It’s springtime and there’s a very obvious date, which happens to fall on a Friday this year. It’s going to be our widest release.

While hordes of buyers scatter throughout Park City over the next week, a Sundance premiere from two years ago quietly hits theaters on January 27 with little fanfare. “I Am Michael,” Justin Kelly’s perceptive and troubling look at gay-activist-turned-Christian-pastor Michael Glatze (James Franco), hits theaters and VOD long after the Sundance hype has moved on. 25. “Game of Thrones,” “The Winds of Winter”

This was a crucial season for “Game of Thrones” co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who, in their sixth year nurturing this beast into life, had to go off-book for the first time since author George R.R. Martin had been outstripped by the TV series. Although the pair pulled off an epic ninth episode — the signature stunner in seasons past — it was the finale that came together the best this year. The opening sequence alone is worth the price of admission because it certainly brings words like “cinematic” to mind. Set to a gorgeous score by Ramin Djawadi, the scene was deftly shepherded by director Miguel Sapochnik to create an almost sadistic amount of tension as we waited for Cersei’s green revenge to be unleashed. Once the catastrophic event occurred though, that was not the end of the dragon ride for us viewers.

It’s a funny thing, watching David Cronenberg’s early films now with 40 years of work to his credit. He’s a director whose movies have a reputation for being cold, clinical, and cerebral. He is known for his fascination with body horror, but approaches it from the remoteness of a distant observer rather than as a fellow human being. And while some of this characterization may be correct, very little of it accurately describes his early efforts, including 1977’s Rabid, Cronenberg’s second-ever horror movie (following Shivers, aka They Came From Within) and his fourth feature film overall, now out on a special edition Blu-ray from Scream Factory.

Pioneering early narrative films and employing theatrical illusions, Méliès’ films are powerful examples of what seemingly “simple” technological achievement can accomplish. Films like “A Trip to the Moon” (1902) and “The Impossible Voyage” (1904) still command attention after all of these years because of the imagination and craft on display.

Now, researchers at the Czech national film archives have found two-minute 1904 silent film “Match de Prestidigitation” by Méliès thought to have been lost forever. In the film, a magician divides himself into two; the doubles then take turns performing magic before joining back together again.

“The reel was titled ‘Les Transmutations Imperceptibles,’ which is the name of another work by Méliès.

The low-budget hit thriller Don't Breathe managed to stay atop the box office during the Labor Day holiday weekend, taking in $15.7 million over the first three-days, and a total of $19.5 over the extended four-day holiday. Now that the fall movie season is kicking into high gear, some of this year's awards season favorites will start hitting the big screen, with the highly-anticipated biopic Sully poised to be one of the first Oscar candidates to arrive this year. We're predicting that Sully should have no trouble taking the top spot this weekend with $22.5 million, fending off fellow new releases The Disappointments Room, The Wild Life and When the Bough Breaks.

What will be interesting to see is how the 9/11 anniversary affects box office sales. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attack, and while Sully, which stars Tom Hanks as the title character, does not have anything to do with terrorism,...

A company known for producing shows that span multiple social media platforms is teaming up with a leading lady who has a big social presence of her own. Canvas Media Studios, founded in 2014 by Bernie Su and David Tochterman, has signed a development deal with actress Jennette McCurdy, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The deal will include multiple scripted projects, all of which will tie in the sort of “transmedia” integrations that have defined Su’s work over the past few years. McCurdy is a sensible partner for Canvas’ brand of content; she has shown her digital media prowess since iCarly’s 2012 end, particularly through a series called What’s Next For Sarah in which she poked fun at her teen sitcom career. She also has a lot of fans on social media; one would think that many of her 6.3 million Twitter followers will happily engage with Canvas’ interactive programming.

Back in April, Sony Pictures offered a first look at their thriller When the Bough Breaks at CinemaCon with the first trailer. We haven't heard anything about the movie since then, but with the September 16 release date getting closer and closer, the studio has rolled out a second trailer with even more new footage. This could be one of the most chilling thrillers of the year, and it may have couples seeking surrogates reconsidering adoption or other methods of bringing a baby into their lives.

Last night, during Sony Pictures' CinemaCon presentation, the studio unveiled the first footage from their upcoming Screen Gems thriller When the Bough Breaks, arriving in theaters September 16. If you weren't in Las Vegas last night, then you're in luck, because Screen Gems has debuted the first trailer for all to see. This thriller will most likely have eager parents thinking twice about the use of a surrogate to bring them a child.

John and Laura Taylor (Morris Chestnut and Regina Hall) are a young, professional couple who desperately want a baby. After exhausting all other options, they finally hire Anna (Jaz Sinclair), the perfect woman to be their surrogate - but as she gets further along in her pregnancy, so too does her psychotic and dangerous fixation on the husband. Teen Lust stars Woodbridge, Ontario’s Jesse Carere as Neil, a high school student whose parents worship Satan. Unbeknownst to Neil, he’s going to be sacrificed to the Dark Lord on the eve of his 18th birthday thanks to his status as a virgin. When he finds out, he realizes the only way to save his life is to stop being a virgin, and fast. As you can imagine, the shoot involved a litany of embarrassing, intimate acts.

Yet the thing Carere remembers most about making Teen Lust has nothing to do with any of them.

“My hair, for sure. It was like a happy accident,” he says over the phone from New York, where he’s playing tourist while his girlfriend and co-star from TV’s "Between", Jennette McCurdy, is in town doing press.

“We didn’t know what we were going to do with my hair,” continues Carere.
