While Hammer Studios depended on bosoms and blood to rejuvenate a listless horror industry, their new contract player had some high octane ideas of his own. His name was Christopher Lee and though the hulking actor towered above the crew and co-stars, he proved shockingly agile as the newborn creature in 1957’s The Curse of Frankenstein. No matter how hospitable or well-tailored, his Dracula was a clear and present danger—fleet of foot and supernaturally strong. And in 1959’s The Mummy, he turned the slow-moving immortal into an Olympian killing machine, outpacing his victims like an undead Usain Bolt.

“Cockeyed philosophies of life, ugly sex situations, cheap jokes, and dirty dialogue are not wanted. Decent people don’t like this sort of stuff, and it is our job to see to it that they get none of it.” The words of American film censor Joseph Breen reverberated through Hollywood, changing the cinematic landscape for decades. Established in 1934, the Motion Picture Production Code (or Hays Code) enforced by Breen was given the power to approve films prior to release. They created strict guidelines as to what they considered moral and immoral behavior. Chief among the code’s list of “Don’ts” and “Be Carefuls,” and henceforth banned in films, was “any inference of sex perversion.” In Horror Film: An Introduction, author Rick Worland remarks that “Hollywood has a long history of equating homosexuality with criminality, perversion, and morose self-destruction.” However, Hollywood’s new standards did not achieve what they set out to do.

There’s a very good chance we’re going to read Midnight Sun, the companion novel to pop culture juggernaut Twilight that retells the first story in the Stephanie Meyer Ya vampire series from Edward Cullen’s perspective. But we can enjoy something while also being critical of it, and the truth is: our culture deserves more, better vampire stories than what the Twilight saga has to offer. With that in mind, we’ve pooled our collective knowledge to recommend the following vampire stories that have more diverse and imaginative takes on the popular genre. From short stories to book series, hopefully there’s something here for you…
Fledgling by Octavia Butler
A good general rule of life to follow is that if Octavia Butler has written something in a particular genre, you should read it. And that’s as true in the world of vampire fiction as anywhere else.

One of vampire fiction’s earliest works, Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu kicked off the genre almost 30 years before Bram Stoker’s Dracula hit bookshelves. The story is about a young woman who’s preyed upon by a female vampire named Carmilla. It’s the prototypical example of a lesbian vampire narrative, which, since its publication in 1872, has spawned direct adaptations and inspired many others’ stories. In this latest take on the novella, writer-director Emily Harris strips Carmilla of its vampiric roots. It does carry the dark tone of Le Fanu’s work, but it’s not a horror film, it’s a period romance. By removing it from the vampire canon, Harris unintentionally retreats to the depiction of lesbianism that was hotly criticized when lesbian vampire films first began.

Delving into an illicit, provocative and unfamiliar relationship is often an enticing element for many literary stories and their subsequent cinematic adaptations. That’s certainly the case for the young protagonist and her intriguing new visitor in the new horror film, ‘Carmilla,’ which was inspired by the 1872 Gothic novella of the same name by Joseph […]

"After we die... what then?" Film Movement has released an official Us trailer for the indie fantasy drama film titled Carmilla, which is "inspired by" Sheridan Le Fanu’s classic Gothic vampire novella of the same name. Described as "a moody, atmospheric, coming-of-age love story steeped in eerie mystery and inspired by the vampire story." This originally premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival last year, and we featured the original UK trailer earlier this year. Starring Hannah Rae as a 15-year-old girl who gets entangled in a love affair when a carriage crash brings a new guest to the house. This also stars Tobias Menzies, Jessica Raine, Greg Wise, and Devrim Lingnau. Featuring some lovely cinematography by Dp Michael Wood. This trailer starts out quite lovely and quiet, but gets seriously intense in the last 30 seconds. Whew! Enjoy. Here's the new official Us trailer (+ new poster) for Emily Harris' Carmilla,...

Film Movement has picked up all North American rights to female-directed coming-of-age dramas Once Upon A River and Carmilla and will release both through its virtual cinema initiative this year.
Feature debutante Haroula Rose’s Once Upon A River is based on Bonnie Jo Campbell’s Midwestern novel of the same name.

In the music scene of the 60’s you had two bands that stood on their own: the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. In films of the same period and into the early 70s, Amicus and Hammer were the Beatles and the Stones of the horror film genre. At their best, both reflected the popular tastes of era as it pertained to movies of this type. The early 70s saw creative highlights. With Hammer it was the Carmilla trilogy, Vampire Circus, Captain Kronos and, with Amicus, we had the splendid portmanteau films which had started with Dr Terrors House of Horrors and reaching their creative peak at the beginning of the new decade. It’s Hammer Time again, and I always feel like I’m playing gothic whack-a-mole; finish one and another pops up begging for my attention. This brings us to Lust for a Vampire (1971), the second film in the “Karnstein trilogy” of which I’ve now seen a total of one. I will see the rest, as is my sworn duty, and because I’ve heard this entertaining chapter to not be the best of the bunch.
That’s the word on the streets anyway, with top honours going to The Vampire Lovers (1970), the preceding effort based on the story Carmilla and enough of a hit to warrant a follow-up. (And a follow-up to this entitled Twins of Evil .) However the rest play out for this viewer, I can attest that despite some issues, Lust for a Vampire works as a decent Hammer and an effective take on vampiric eroticism.

Castlevania season 2 has quite a few references to the seminal video game series. Here's what we've found so far...
This Castlevania article contains spoilers.
Castlevania season 2 continues the story of Trevor Belmont, Alucard, and Sypha Belnades as they make their way to Dracula's castle for a final confrontation with the Count. The second season also introduces quite a few new characters, including three big names from the video game series. You may also spot some familiar monsters and ghouls!
As we did with Castlevania season 1, Den of Geek has put together a list of easter eggs and references found in the second season of the animated series. We'll be covering all of the new things appearing in season 2, but won't be going over Trevor, Sypha, and Alucard again since we already covered them in the first season reference guide along with much of the other basic Castlevania knowledge.

While not quite as good as the remarkable first season, Castlevania season 2 is still an excellent adaptation of the video game classic.

Castlevania Season 2
In 2017, writer Warren Ellis, director Sam Deats, and producer Adi Shankar accomplished the impossible. Like a lone Belmont entering Dracula's castle armed with nothing but a whip, this team set out on a mission many thought would end in failure: to create a worthy video game adaptation that celebrated the source material while also taking it seriously. But when Castlevania season 1 dropped on Netflix last year, it defied the odds and became the first truly great video game adaptation.
With Castlevania season 2, the show continues its excellent adaptation of the classic platformer series, as Trevor Belmont (Richard Armitage), Sypha Belnades (Alejandra Reynoso), and Alucard (James Callis) prepare to storm Dracula's castle while the Count (Graham McTavish) readies his forces to obliterate the world of man.

Hannah Rae (Broadchurch) is set as a series regular opposite Elisabeth Shue in TNT’s drama pilot Constance, from Team Downey, Sonar Entertainment and Studio T.
Written by Kc Perry and directed by Jesse Peretz, Constance is a fun, darkly humorous, veneer-stripping story about one woman’s refusal to fade into obsolescence. It follows former beauty queen-turned-small town bureaucrat, Constance Young (Shue), whose life is thrown into turmoil after her husband’s mysterious death. Realizing she and her family are on the verge of financial ruin, Constance turns to cooking the books at City Hall, while simultaneously trying to reinvent herself through the hyper-competitive world of direct-sales cosmetics. Kevin Dunn co-stars as Constance’s boss at City Hall and Gless as Constance’s mother.
Rae plays Hannah Olivia Young. She’s Constance’s (Shue) ultra-competitive, somewhat disaffected and precociously snarky daughter, who uses pageant wins as her golden ticket out of this sleepy beach town.

Nintendo followed up on their E3 showcase with an entire direct chock full of brand new Super Smash Brother’s Ultimate information.
Simon Belmont
Wasting no time, the team revealed that none other than Simon Belmont would be joining the roster from the Castlevania franchise. Most of his normal attacks will include the usage of the slow but long-reaching ‘Holy whip’ and his special attacks include the likes of the iconic axe, cross, and holy water. His final smash is known as “Grand Cross”, sending his opponents flying into the air trapped within a coffin followed by a barrage of crosses.
Dracula’s Castle
Simon’s home stage is Dracula’s castle. A gothic horror house filled to the brim with different enemies and bosses from the Castlevania series including the Mummy, Death, Carmilla, Werewolf, and of course, Dracula. For an advantage, players can attack the candlesticks for an item to spawn.

As far as web series premises go, it doesn't get much simpler than "two friends sit on their front steps and talk about whatever happens to be on their minds." And yet, as Step Sisters proves, a great web series can have simple origins. Sharon Belle and Maddy Foley's chatty show is winning rave reviews from its viewers thanks to the skill and attention to detail of its co-stars.
The titular Step Sisters are not actual step sisters, or even regular sisters. They're just "sisters," in the platonic sense, who like to hang out on the steps in front of their house. Their topics of conversation range from pink eye to dentistry to (of course) Tinder. Oh, and they're Canadian; viewers may recognize Belle from her prominent role in the popular Canadian web series Carmilla.

The creative team behind the hit vampire web series Carmilla is set to launch a new show. On May 16, Canadian producer Shaftesbury will launch Clairevoyant, a supernatural comedy about a pair of psychics, on its KindaTV channel.
Clairevoyant will star Natasha Negovanlis and Annie Briggs (both of whom have roles in Carmilla) as a pair of roommates who look to make a quick buck by going into the psychic business. Their plans take a turn when Claire, portrayed by Negovanlis, discovers that she possesses honest-to-god psychic powers.
Negovanlis and Briggs raised funds for Clairevoyant via Indiegogo, where they scooped up more than $25,000 from backers last year. As a result, they were able to put together 14 five-minute episodes, which will be released between May 16 and May 30.
“My co-creator Annie Briggs and I became fast friends on the set of Carmilla and came up with the idea while bonding over our mutual fascination with fortune telling.

With over 1,000 buyers of youth-oriented programming assembled in Cannes for MipTV, Academy President and CEO Bruce L. Paisner celebrated what he described as an “exciting and thriving industry” that’s “pushing boundaries [and] inventing new forms.”
Twenty-eight nominees from 16 countries gathered for the presentation of awards highlighting the dynamism of kids programming around the world.
In the category of Kids: Factual, the winner was “Berlin und wir!” (Berlin and Us!), by Germany’s Imago TV and pubcaster Zdf, about German and refugee kids learning about each other’s cultures in Berlin.
Topping the Kids: Preschool category was France’s “La Cabane à Histoires” (The Treehouse Stories), by Dandelooo and Caribara Production, about four friends who meet in a secret treehouse to share their favorite books.
