The two sides of love

You don't really take it in at the time, but there's a clue at the start of Initiation Love that alerts you to the dual nature of the film. It seems like just a nostalgic reference to the film's 1980s' setting but the image of a cassette tape makes the point that it has an A-Side and a B-Side, and there are definitely two sides to Initiation Love.

Side A plays out like a typical romantic comedy of innocent geek love. In Shizuoka city in 1987, overweight and socially awkward Tatsuya Suzuki can't believe his luck when an attractive young woman shows an interest in him. He had only been invited to a group dinner date to make up the numbers, but somehow he immediately makes a connection with Mayuko Naruoka, a beautiful young woman who is clearly way out of his league. Soon however not only are Mayoko and 'Takkun' a regular Friday night item, but Mayoko manages to inspire him to lose weight and transform his whole image.

The transformation is abrupt - involving an entirely different actor - but the changes and the affect it has on the couple's relationship is more gradual as the film flips over to the B-side. Suzuki is transferred to his work's head office in Tokyo and for a while he makes the long commute back to Shizuoka to be with Mayoko at the weekends, but can their long-distance relationship survive? When Miyako, a colleague in the Tokyo office starts to show a romantic interest in him, Suzuki finds himself almost literally torn between the two women.

The dual nature of Initiation Love is important then, and director Yukihiko Tsutsumi (20th Century Boys) is clever in how he lets the innocent bright and colourful lightness of the 80s' romance in the first part of the film develop into something unexpectedly darker in tone. The contrast highlights the division between youthful innocence and the complications of adult life, the difference between life in the provinces and the city, but the passing of time is also a divisive factor, where the nostalgic view we hold of the past and dreams for the future don't always match up with the reality. As the film's opening and potentially confusing twist conclusion highlights, we can't imagine the unexpected and unplanned for changes we go through in life. A cassette doesn't just have an A-Side and a B-Side, but it can be a mixtape as well.

Is the twist worth the watch?

It starts out like a cute romance but quickly turns into quite an unpleasant story. I couldn't relate with the main protagonist. Why would you get together with the person you love but then leave her alone in another city because your job takes you elsewhere. And then be a total piece scum to her the few days you come visit. There is an unexpected twist to the story (this is even announced during the opening credits as a message from the producers) which puts the whole affair into a different, you could say black-humorous perspective, but to me that didn't change the fact that the story was rather unpleasant to watch and so were the characters. But your mileage may vary, a matter of taste I'd say. I did like the cinematography and the 80's flair, it's done so perfectly, I had to double-check that I was watching a movie from 2015.

This film begins with a warning telling its viewers to avoid revealing the secret to those who haven't seen it yet, so you know what to expect. The only thing that I like about this film are the twist and cinematography. After all this is a good film with 2-side things.

A big turn-over

It's a good movie, in which you can see lots of stereotypes of people in the real world: a struggled man who finally betrayed, a lovely girl who actually dates with multiple guys at the same time, a mature and beautiful lady who is determined to get the man she likes, a loser who is always dreaming to be a superman and get a lovely girlfriend. Additionally, the way this movie tells the story is pretty cool and deceptive, I think, the director must be super- happy if he could see those widely open mouse on audiences' faces. It has 2 sides, side A and side B, with two different actors that many people including me might think they are the same one but in different time, so it's a trick. However, at the end of the story, we finally realized that there are two men in this movie not just a single one. What a liar the director is, but to be honest, I really enjoyed this feeling of being cheated, it's like your naughty girlfriend made a bad joke on you. Last thing to notice is that do you still remember the wired smile on the actress's face at the end, when her secret was exposed, she didn't get embarrassed but feeling a abnormal happiness. My understanding is that's the smile from the director. ^_^

Amazing story

It's a wonderful story with 2-side things. I am so glad the director did an mazing work, everything is so linked perfectly from the beginning to the end. I am in shock with smiling about the true of the ending.

Nothing is what it seems

It's hard to give reviews for this movie without giving any spoilers. So I just want to congratulate the director and script writer for doing such an excellent job. They made a very good movie, taking the audience into one side and then making a hard turn on the last part of movie.

Atsuko Maeda plays as Mayu-chan, an adorable yet somewhat fragile girl, who fell in love with a nerd she called Takkun. Audience would surely fall in love with this kind of protagonist, I sure did, and for the second part of the movie, we even take her side more, cause we want to protect her from all harms and hardships that she have to endure. But don't give up just yet, cause the last 10 minutes would surely blown your mind away!
