Europe during World War II. Having suffered terrible privations and humiliations, Frenchman Pierre Dac succeeds in reaching England. As a Jew, a patriotic Frenchman and an opponent to all persons and things Nazi, he is determined to contribute to the war effort. As a result he joins a London radio station, where he becomes part of a French crew of artists, soldiers, newspapermen, politicians and eccentrics trying to undo the daily damages caused by German propaganda. Soon the Nazis begin to fear his sharp powers of observation, just like they begin to fear his biting songs, editorials and pastiches...

"La guerre des ondes" (War of the airwaves) pays tribute to writer and humorist Pierre Dac, who did sterling work during World War II. For many wartime French, his voice became THE voice of Resistance. It's a well-made and watchable movie, which consists of a clever mix of drama and actual news footage from the War. It is a good introduction to the life and work of Dac, who would go on to become a national institution before dying at a ripe old age.

"La guerre des ondes" also has some interesting things to say about the nature and techniques of wartime propaganda.

On the other hand : while the movie is watchable and enjoyable, it is not in any way exceptional. It informs, moves and entertains, but does not soar to dizzying heights.
