This is my design.

Warning: Spoilers
Just when I was thinking the series is losing its focus, the last few episodes have proved me very, very wrong! Digestivo's (S3E7) ending felt like a season finale and it very well could've been one, so the introduction of the Red Dragon is exactly the breath of fresh air that the rest of the season needed. This new arc was set up beautifully and it sends us back to the style we've seen in the first season, just that this time we're looking at a different design, instead of Hannibal's.

I'm very interested in seeing how Will's relationship with Hannibal will evolve. I'm also wondering what Hannibal is actually up to now, being locked up in the mental institution and seeing another serial killer taking his place in the public spotlight and in Will's mind as well, which is probably even more important to him at this point.

I have a lot of questions after this episode and this is a good indicator of how good of an episode it was. With each episode I see in this season I feel more disappointed by the fact that this is the last we get to see from this art piece. We might as well enjoy it while it lasts.

Terrifying and beautiful in the way only Hannibal understands

Warning: Spoilers
After last week's triumph of a finale of sorts, Hannibal slowed things down again tonight by introducing us into the arc that will ultimately see the show to its close. Yes, in episode eight we met the Red Dragon, in an episode titled The Great Red Dragon. So right now it's really all about the Red Dragon. Yet this episode didn't only have that one task to do, it also had to catch us up with each central character as this episode took place after a three year time jump. Somehow, despite slowing the pace down considerably from the last three episodes, The Great Red Dragon managed to not only achieve all of this, but pull it off with style and confidence in a way that no other show knows how.

We'll start by going over the Dragon himself; Francis Dolarhyde AKA The Tooth Fairy. Dolarhyde kills "perfect" families every lunar month on the full moon, and this episode took us into the aftermath of the second massacre. Richard Armitage joins the cast as Dolarhyde and he fits in seamlessly; his essentially wordless performance is outstanding in his debut. He manages to take what could have come across as quite a gimmicky character and add layers of depth to his insanity, coupled with how this episode was gorgeously shot by first-time Hannibal director Neil Marshall (the man behind the camera for Game of Thrones' greatest accomplishment; Blackwater). Marshall clearly took the artsy side of Hannibal on board from the get-go; that opening sequence was beautifully horrifying, and the projector scene mid way through the episode is the most bizarrely wonderful thing this show has done all year. And that's saying something.

But we still need our old characters, so enter Alana Bloom, now the owner of the mental institution in which Hannibal Lecter is being held, whilst Will Graham is now married with a stepson and living peacefully in the countryside. It's apt that Dolarhyde kills families, I mean, how else would Will ever even consider going back to assisting the FBI and entering that mindset again after all that happened during the 33 episodes prior to this one? But Jack Crawford, along with Will's own wife, convinces him to go, and so he does. It's not long before Will is in the house of the second family, seeing their bodies appear only through flashlight before they disappear when his torchlight leaves their bodies. It's been a long time since we had the yellow bars sliding across the screen, with the words "This is my design" closing the sequence, but they made a triumphant return tonight, in arguably the creepiest "This is my design" sequence ever. It was shot terrifically, but Hugh Dancy acted the hell out of that scene. He has been on fire this season.

One of my favourite details about this episode was Hannibal's memory palace taking over his visualisation of the institution he is in. In the episode's first post-credits sequence, he and Alana discuss matters while sitting in an office drinking wine together. But then we cut randomly, without any alterations in the dialogue or in Alana's costume, and Lecter is behind the glass, and only Alana is sat with wine. It's a clever trick to play on the audience, and one that works wonders when used to further analyse the state of Hannibal's mind. It's important to remember that he chose to be there and that he surrendered, so his memory palace taking over his impression of his cell is a smart way of further pointing out that this is what Hannibal wants. The rest of the episode bounces along nicely, it's important to recognise this almost as a pilot episode; if last week's was a finale, this has to be a premiere. But if The Great Red Dragon is anything to go by, it's going to be one hell of a story for the show to end on.

Other Review Made Me Laugh...
setgetsiin14 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
...with all the pompous frills of the review, goes and writes how Will becomes Clarice.

If the pompous wanderer bought a clue, s/he would know that Will actually was before Clarice (in the books and in the movies. Red Dragon with Petersen, I believe, came out long before Silence of the Lambs). Clarice followed Will. In that order. Not the other way around.

This entire series is very true to the books and movies (yes, there were movies back in the 70s and 80s, it wasn't the Wild West. We actually had telephones and everything!) Tsk.

I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. I'm irritated at the "let's change everyone's color" pacifier, which is now at a point of overkill, it's sickening. I also hope that all people that suffer cancer look as marvelous as Bella at the end. Good Grief. The pacifiers didn't help anything, as the Wakesha and Brooklyn terrorists are still getting away with literal murder. (All the white chicks kissing black men on screen isn't going to fix their hatred for us, darlings.)

Back to the Show... It's the beginning of the end, Will revisiting Lector in regards to the Red Dragon. I'm very thankful for the history leading up to it in this format, I thoroughly enjoyed this show.

I do wonder if Clarice and Lector live happily ever after in the Literary World of Hannibal? Or if Bedelia was a mix of post-Lambs Clarice...? I have to reread these again.

FTR: Will watch Mads in anything.

The great red dragon

Warning: Spoilers
Crawford asks for help from Will about the tooth fairy massacres. The scenes with the great dragon were impressive. He bites his victims and smashes the mirrors in the house and place the pieces in their eyes and mouth.

It's Dark On The Other Side. And Madness Is Waiting.
wandernn1-81-6832748 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
So fast forward 3 years that Lecter has been held in the Baltimore State Hospital

We are introduced to Francis Dolarhyde in the beautiful opening sequence. Apparently now headed into the realm of the first Thomas Harris book again, Red Dragon.

+1 Star for the amazing imagery in the opening sequence.....

As stated, Lecter mentally keeps himself afloat, to himself anyway, by using his memory palace. Dr. Bloom apparently is in charge now of the State Hospital where Lecter is being held.

A few scenes with Lecter, then a few more with Dolarhyde, as it is established that the media is calling Dolarhyde, the Tooth Fairy.

Next to Graham's 'new' house? Where Crawford comes to meet with Graham. Crawford is there to recruit Graham, to come help him catch the Tooth Fairy. Graham finally reads the letter Lecter had penned to him. And then burns it.

Cut to Graham inspecting one of the crime scenes of the Tooth Fairy, as only Will Graham can.

+1 Star for returning to the roots, reconstruction of the crime, with the pendulum swing. I've missed that.

I love the use of mirrors by the Tooth Fairy. Was an amazingly crafted story by Thomas Harris, and truly brought to life once again here by the show creators.

And of course, as expected, Graham goes to Crawford and says, he has to see Hannibal. Graham has become Clarice. Haha.

This one ends with a 7/10.

Well, im Not Impressed [7.5/10]

Warning: Spoilers
My Reaction / Review for Hannibal Season 3 Episode 8: Episode 7 was awesome and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Three years passed, we have a time jump. Nice to see Chilton again, at first I didn't really like the character but that changed later. The new killer seems very disturbed, I think he has a dragon obsession. Nice to see Will with his doggos again. Does Will have a son? Or is this boy the son of his girlfriend? Ok he is 11 years old, its not his son. It's actually really nice to see that Will has moved on. Having a killer that only kills whole families is interesting but so far this killer doesn't seem to be that interesting. Maybe if they let us see him murdering the families this would change. Now Will needs Hannibal's help, that's interesting. Not an impressive episode, my rating is 7.5/10.
