Exclusive: Apple TV+ has extended its first-look deal with Oscar-nominated producer Kevin Walsh and his The Walsh Company shingle, to continue to develop and produce original films and series for the service.
This is a sweeter deal, and positions Walsh to become a bigger supplier for Apple’s slate of originals. It comes after Walsh produced Apple Original Films’ The Instigators, which launched as the most-watched movie on Apple TV+; and the Ridley Scott-directed Napoleon. Up next is another Apple original, Echo Valley, a Michael Pearce-directed thriller that stars Julianne Moore alongside Sydney Sweeney from an original screenplay by Brad Ingelsby. Produced by The Walsh Company and Scott Free Films, that film debuts next year.
Walsh is also in the middle of a potential sequel to The Instigators, sorting it out with Apple, director Doug Liman, co-writers Casey Affleck and Chuck MacLean and Artists Equity partners Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

While both brothers have enjoyed long and successful careers, Ben’s financial achievements, along with his massive paydays from blockbuster hits, outshine Casey’s comparatively modest earnings. Let’s dive deeper into Casey Affleck’s net worth, his career highlights, and how it compares to his famous brother.

Since the academy expanded the Best Picture category at the Oscars in 2010, Best Original Screenplay has gone to writers of a wide-range of genres: dramas; comedies (“Midnight in Paris”); biopics; true-life stories (“Spotlight”); memoirs (“Belfast”); period pictures (“Django Unchained”); war movies (“The Hurt Locker”); sci-fi (“Her”), thrillers horror (“Get Out”) and fantasies (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) . (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Original Screenplay.)
Of this year’s top 10 contenders for Best Original Screenplay, nine were written, at least in part, by the directors. The exception is “Challengers,” which Justin Kuritzkes wrote for director Luca Guadagnino. He also adapted the William S. Burroughs novel “Queer” for this busy helmer and he could well contend over in Best Adapted Screenplay for that.
“Challengers” is, at its heart, a romance. Love, albeit short-lived, is also the subject of the frontrunner in this race, Sean Baker‘s “Anora.

Oscar winner Matt Damon has been one of Hollywood’s most reliable leading men for over two decades. But how many of his titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 23 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Though Damon and his childhood friend Ben Affleck became famous by writing their own ticket to fame and fortune with “Good Will Hunting” (1997), the pair had been acting for years before that film became an art house hit, even appearing together in “School Ties” (1992). But it was by returning to their native Boston to tell the inspirational story about a secret math genius (Damon) that put them on the map, winning them an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and bringing Damon his first Best Actor nomination.

Ben Affleck was never encouraged to become a full-time actor despite deeply admiring the world of arts and theater. The actor’s mother wanted him to become a teacher. Either way, she allowed Ben and his brother Casey to explore the entertainment field.
But when Affleck developed a bond with Matt Damon, things began taking a serious turn. Between the ages of 8-15, Affleck starred in children’s shows produced by PBS and ABC, casting him to play roles in Wanted: A Perfect Man and Hands of a Stranger.

Here’s a sneak peek at Cillian Murphy’s next not-“Peaky Blinders” film.
The Academy Award winner stars in and produces “Small Things Like These” based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Claire Keegan. “Small Things Like These” centers on devoted father Bill Furlong (Murphy) who works as a coal merchant to support his family. While on the job, he discovers disturbing secrets kept by the local convent — and realizes some truths of his own — forcing him to confront his past and the complicit silence of a small Irish town controlled by the Catholic Church.
The film is set in 1985, and co-stars Emily Watson, Michelle Fairley, and Eileen Walsh.
Playwright Enda Walsh adapated the script, with “Peaky Blinders” director Tim Mielants directing. The feature premiered at Berlinale 2024; it was later acquired by Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions.

When Mejuri’s Jacob Jordan met filmmaker Gia Coppola and the team at creative production firm The Directors Bureau, the vibes were, as the kids say, pretty immaculate.
“We immediately felt a strong creative and personal connection,” the fine jewelry company’s chief brand officer tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It felt like I was sitting down with a group of old friends. We were intuitively aligned on pushing the limits of marketing, storytelling and the conventional idea of a ‘campaign.'”
The spark of that meeting has produced a new endeavor for Mejuri with the launch of A New York Minute, a series of new “microfilms” that reimagine the Mejuri story as episodic content with Coppola at the helm directing a group of young female friends with jewelry pieces as supporting players. The collaboration is also part of a recent wave of creativity from fashion brands like Gucci and Saint Laurent...

I believe we, as humans, rely on the people, pets, or things around us to give our lives meaning. We can’t just go through life completely alone—we need connections. But when we lose what we’re living for, it leaves us wondering: what’s the point now? Processing that kind of grief is incredibly hard. If you have experienced loss yourself or have seen movies such as Manchester by the Sea or Little Miss Sunshine, you know all about the aching loneliness that comes with grief. The movie The Rooster, directed by Mark Leonard Winter, dives right into this theme of loss and isolation.
The Rooster follows a police officer named Dan, who is forced to take a break from his job after the death of his best friend and his beloved rooster. Dan, really overwhelmed with grief, doesn’t know how to cope and decides to leave...

“Speaking hypothetically, what would happen if a Yankees fan yelled ‘Bucky Fucking Dent’ as you are in your windup to throw out the first pitch today,” I ask Matt Damon as he marinates in the anxiety of Jason Bourne screwing it up on the mound in front of a sellout crowd at Fenway Park.
He doesn’t miss a beat: “I guess I’ll be throwing at your head, Mike.”

As I approached the finale of Slingshot, a single thought came through my head: “There’s no way they can stick the landing here, right?” As expected, when the credits rolled, I can only say that it didn’t. Matt Damon and Casey Affleck have both won Oscars for Massachusetts-set movies; Damon for writing “Good Will Hunting” with Casey’s brother Ben, and Casey for acting in the tragic drama “Manchester by the Sea.” Damon and the Afflecks’ latest Boston-set team-up, heist comedy “The Instigators,” is unlikely to win them any additional gold, but it’s a fun ride nevertheless.

Ramirez plays a reclusive Afghanistan War veteran who discovers his favorite cam girl is involved in a dangerous conspiracy and sets out to save her. What starts as a bizarre man-on-a-mission movie becomes a strangely moving tale of human connection in a digital world.
Ramirez recently wrapped production on Captain America: Brave New World and HBO’s The Last of Us. He will next be seen leading Todd Haynes’ next movie. His recent works include the dark comedy Winner, the critically acclaimed Top Gun: Maverick, and Black Mirror: Mazey Day.

Despite winning an Oscar for playing the saddest man in all existence in “Manchester by the Sea,” Casey Affleck’s earlier roles seemed well aware that he could nail the role of an annoying kid brother. One of the best jokes in “Good Will Hunting” is Affleck in the backseat of the car singing, “I wish I had a double burger…” and then he brought that same irritating-yet-endearing energy to the trilogy of “Ocean’s” movies. While Affleck may not be playing a kid brother in his new movie “The Instigators,” it’s the same type of chattering tag-along that works incredibly well for him (and perhaps no surprise that he also co-wrote the script). Paired once again with Matt Damon, the two’s instant chemistry easily carries the film as a breezy watch that for better and worse provides the sense that the stars are making it up as they go along.

Anyone can see that the heist at the heart of “The Instigators” is a bad idea: A two-bit crime boss knows the Boston mayor has been padding his pockets for decades, and figures they’re never fatter than on election night, when Beantown’s biggest donors fork over envelopes stuffed with cash. Said mobster wants to send in a team of dimwitted guys to relieve the crooked politician of all those 11th-hour “campaign contributions.” There’s just one small problem: “What if Choy wins the run-off?” asks Matt Damon’s Rory, who figures the corruption they’re targeting could cost the mayor the election.
In “The Instigators,” that small problem quickly snowballs into a veritable avalanche of complications, as Damon and Casey Affleck play characters grossly ill-equipped to be stealing from Boston’s most powerful man. As blue-collar Rory, Damon represents the unshaven and inexperienced polar opposite of a pro like Jason Bourne.

Casey Affleck and Laurence Fishburne are traveling into another realm for psychological thriller “Slingshot.”
The film centers on an elite trio of astronauts who board a years-long, possibly compromised mission to Saturn’s moon Titan. “As the team gears up for a highly dangerous slingshot maneuver that will either catapult them to Titan or into deep space, it becomes increasingly difficult for one astronaut to maintain his grip on reality,” the official synopsis reads.
Emily Beecham, Tomer Capone, and David Morrissey co-star.
“Slingshot” is directed by Mikael Häfström with a script co-written by R. Scott Adams and Nathan Parker. Häfström previously directed 2007 film “1408,” which was based on a Stephen King short story, as well as features “Outside the Wire” and “The Rite.” Håfström first announced “Slingshot” in 2021.

Space travel is not for the weak. It takes a special kind of person to brave the cosmos and not recoil from insignificance while coming to grips with how small we are in an ocean of stars and infinite possibilities. If you’re not careful, the weight of your mission and the isolation that comes with the job can warp your senses, making you see and hear things that are not there. In Mikael Håfström’s Slingshot trailer, Casey Affleck, Laurence Fishburne, and Tomer Capone star in a psychological thriller about three astronauts making Ren and Stimpy’s case of space madness look like child’s play.
Here’s the official synopsis for Slingshot courtesy of Bleecker Street:

The 51st Telluride Film Festival promises to be a star-studded affair, with several high-profile movies expected to debut at the top of awards season.
As is customary, the full lineup, including screening schedules, isn’t announced until the day before the festival begins. This year’s festivities take place from Aug. 30 to Sept. 2. So longtime attendees, both press and cinephile enthusiasts, now look to the classifications of movies playing at Venice, Toronto and New York Film Festivals to gather clues on what could be shown during the Colorado-set festival.
The Toronto Film Festival lineup provides reliable clues. The labels for the films as “World,” “International,” “North American,” or “Canadian” premieres offer the most significant hints on what might stop at Telluride during the Labor Day weekend festivities. The timing of TIFF (Sept. 5 to Sept. 15) leaves no other festivals to claim the premiere designations beforehand, making these guesses quite reliable, give or take any last-minute changes.

Amazon MGM Studios has set a multi-year film partnership with Scott Stuber to finance and release movies under his new production company and to relaunch United Artists, the studio announced on Friday.
The agreement with Stuber’s new entity, which will be based on Amazon MGM Studios’ Culver City lot, also includes a first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios. In addition, Stuber will be involved in all projects released by the new UA.
Stuber is coming off a seven-year run at Netflix where he spearheaded the streamer’s film division as chairman of Netflix Films. He left the company earlier this year and was replaced by Dan Lin.
The move to Amazon may be a better fit for Stuber, who spent his tenure at Netflix advocating for a more significant theatrical footprint for their films. While he was intermittently successful, Netflix chief Ted Sarandos continually maintained that the streamer would...

Sometimes a certain breed of male actors can come off beyond disinterested in the whole Hollywood thing, despite working their butts off to get where they are. Maybe it’s some mumbling or not committing to interviews or the smacking of gum, but whatever it is they do, it comes across like they think they are just too cool for it all. That’s something that Casey Affleck had to come to terms with when he came across as ungrateful when making the circuit for 2007’s The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
Casey Affleck had been thrust into the awards circuit for playing Ford in Andrew Dominik’s western, garnering nominations from the Academy Awards, the Screen Actors Guild, the Golden Globes, and more. And while Affleck did turn out for a number of events, he tended to come off like he just didn’t want to be there.

Matt Damon surely has a stellar career trajectory that only a few actors in Hollywood can keep up with. With his critically lauded role as a gifted mathematician in the 1997 film Good Will Hunting, the actor acquired popularity in Tinsel Town. This, in turn, helped him earn his first Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, co-writing with Ben Affleck.

While this surely had a golden place in his heart, he could have helmed a directorial masterpiece if the circumstances had aligned differently. But he asked his friend and fellow director, Kenneth Lonergan, to direct it instead. Moreover, Matt Damon was undoubtedly pleased with his choice, given the critical and commercial success the film received.

The superhero genre has experienced a notable surge in the past decade, propelled by franchises like the MCU and similar productions. If looks could kill, Casey Affleck would’ve been six feet underground during the 87th Academy Awards.

But when Denzel Washington lost the prestigious accolade to the 48-year-old actor, his eyes filled with tears of bitter anguish.

Apple TV+ has debuted the first official trailer for Doug Liman's The Instigators, an upcoming heist thriller starring Academy Award-winners and Boston natives Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting; The Martian; The Departed) and Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea; Oppenheimer; The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) in the lead roles as two thieves who, after a botched robbery, are forced to go on the run with their therapist (Academy Award-nominee Hong Chau).

Matt Damon is a desperate father and Casey Affleck, an ex-con pursued by the police and vengeful crime bosses, in the trailer for Doug Liman’s heist movie The Instigators, which dropped on Thursday.
“I got a once-in-a-lifetime score,” Rory, played by Damon, says early on in the trailer (below) as he teams with Cobby (Affleck) to rob a corrupt mayor (Ron Perlman) of his ill-gotten gains. But when their heist goes wrong, the duo are forced on a chaotic getaway.
In over their heads, Rory enlists his reluctant therapist, played by Hong Chau, to join their riotous escape through the city, where the inept thieves must put aside their differences and work together to evade capture — or worse.
The Instigators hinges on the on-screen chemistry between Affleck and Damon. In turn, Damon collaborated with Liman on The Bourne Identity franchise. The pic also reteams Damon, Affleck and producer Kevin Walsh...

As the Cannes Film Festival celebrates its parties and standing ovations, audiences in Hollywood and New York prepare to wallow in despair. And they’ll enjoy it (almost).
The festival called Bleak Week this week will deliver 43 films to an expected audience of 10,000 at theaters including the restored Egyptian in Hollywood, the Aero in Santa Monica and the Paris in New York.
Created by the American Cinematheque, Bleak Week will feature celebrities and Q&a sessions explaining why their projects deal with existential dread, nihilism and “uncomfortable truths,” as Bleak Week creative director Grant Moninger puts it.
Not surprisingly, there surely also will be post-screening alcoholic consumption for filmgoers seeking to ease the pain.
As the Cinematheque details it, Bleak Week was not prompted by Gaza, student protests, geomagnetic storms or the possible loss of yet another studio (Paramount).
Rather, its announced purpose is to honor an important if long-ignored...

While Quentin Tarantino is considered to be the king of dialogue, his movies’ lines, with all their wholesomeness, clearly lack realism. However, there are movies in which onscreen conversations are really close to real ones, depicting the truth of life.
Here are 7 examples of such truthfully made movies, handpicked by Redditors.
1. Superbad (2007)
Jonah Hill and Michael Cera’s coming-of-age comedy doesn’t really mince words showing the truthful image of the American youth of different interests.
“It was exactly like how high schoolers spoke to each other in 2007,” fairly admits @dabisnit.
2. Uncut Gems (2019)
Directed by Benny and Josh Safdies, this crime thriller is very dialogue-heavy, with lots of multiple conversations happening simultaneously and fastly spoken utterances, which sounds really natural, being reminiscent of our daily communication in the big city.
3. Manchester By the Sea (2016)
“I love that there are no deep monologues. Every bit of dialogue feels real,” as voiced by Redditor @backinredd.

Big changes could be coming to the Sundance Film Festival, an incubator of (mostly) American independent film for decades, and the launchpad for Oscar-winning movies like “Coda,” “Manchester By The Sea,” “Whiplash,” “Winter’s Bone,” “The Usual Suspects” and many more. (The number of movies to debut at Sundance that were Oscar-nominated in some category or another is too long to list.) Long associated with the upscale ski resort of Park City, Utah, it looks like the annual event may be thinking of moving elsewhere.
The primary reason cited is that the event is simply “too big” for the small community.
The festival has opened itself up for bidding from hosts, eyeing 2027 as a potential new start date. As per Deadline, other locations can put forth their proposals now through May 1, and a second round will continue through late June. The evaluation will be based in part on “sustainability and inclusivity.
