Movie has a Good Humour but carries Lots of Exaggeration
adil_mughal9730 May 2015
In The Movie Welcome 2 Karachi, The Actors Arshad and Jacky has done a good job but the story of the movie is really NONSENSE. The Movie is exaggerated so much that it should be given 0/10 Marks but due to the hard work of the actors and some good humor, I had to give it 4/10 marks. The Duo goes to the Indian consulate and even a very common guy is carrying a very heavy gun (Even Intelligence officer is not having that type of gun). The movie indirectly wants to say that almost every Pakistani is a criminal and everyone in Karachi is a terrorist. After that a war begins between the consulates of the rival countries. Jacky and Arshad are kidnapped in the movie while walking on the road. A Group of Pathans attack on Arshad for speaking Against Shahid KHAN Afridi (A Pakistani Cricket Superstar). Arshad Tries to steal a pizza but even in the Pizza Box, there are weapons. All These Things try to prove that There is no other thing in Pakistan but Weapons and Pakistanis don't have anything to do but terrorism. Apart from these things, the humor (as already said) was very good and the acting skills of Arshad and Jacky made me to give them a satisfactory marks of 4/10.If the film had a better story and if it had shown some reality about Pakistan and Karachi, the rating would be different. But Good Work by Arshad and Jacky.

Welcome 2 Karachi, in spite of hilarious moments and with Arshad and Jacky in the lead, fails to take off !
binducherungath1 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Welcome 2 Karachi is a comedy film by Ashish R Mohan. Occasional hilarious scenes might leave you in splits, but otherwise, the movie fails in its genre. It turns out be a very average movie. Welcome 2 Karachi does an attempt to add humour to India-Pakistan feud, Taliban Issue, American's interventions, but these all turn out to be merely over-the-top drama. The opening credits itself do not generate any curiosity but are set up in an inferior tone.

Kedar Patel (Jackky Bagnani), son of a businessman, gets his US visa rejected for the third time. His good friend and ex-navy professional Shammi (Arshad Warsi) suggests to go to USA by cruise, if not by air. But an accident makes them arrive at Karachi. When they learn that they are in Karachi, both of them in their attempt to come back to India, goof up the whole thing. They are mistaken to be intruders from across the border. Lauren plays the role of Investigation officer who is sure that these two people (Shammi and Kedar) might be a threat to their country.

Kedar is dumb and Shammi is loud-mouthed which land them in unforeseen situations. They both definitely generate laughter through some scenes when they accidentally get trapped sometimes amongst Pathans / Mujahideens / Police officers / Talibans etc. Taliban Camp Scene is worth mention, though looks very unreal, but it was so funny.

Both Arshad and Jacky are good. We have seen this Arshad earlier also, but as far as Jackky is concerned, he also has shown good comic timings. The movie just projected some plots / sub plots, even attempted to present a satire on so many pertinent issues, but somewhere, the passion got lost in storytelling and the output turned to be very mediocre. Music is below average and an unwanted item number 'Shakira' (by Lauren) was inserted.

Another wacky comedy that had a much more entertaining trailer than the actual film.
bobbysing2 August 2016
For friends who might be considering the film to be based on a novel idea revolving around two friends unknowingly getting into Pakistan territory facing the terrorists groups, the subject was recently seen in the award winning movie FILMISTAN (2014) too, that unfortunately couldn't reach a wider audience missing any 'star- value'. And exploiting the same plot in a much wackier manner defying every kind of logic right from its first sequence itself, WELCOME 2 KARACHI turns out to be a pretty ordinary project in comparison that ironically had a more entertaining 3 minute trailer than the entire 2 hour film to be straight.

Directed by Ashish R Mohan (post KHILADI 786), it begins with a lazy instrumental track used in the titles and then goes on offering all over the top, crazy or annoying insertions that desperately try to entertain the viewers without any major success. For instance, you get everything thrown in from a 3 IDIOTS inspired child birth, dumb looking terrorists groups and a good looking Intelligence agent to a weird change of identities of two Indians as Pakistani officers, introducing their extended families by news channels and then sending them back to India again with their fresh Indian Passports and disguised looks adding to the senseless confusion (Now who actually wrote that?).

But above all there is one particular sequence staged around the Indian Consulate in Pakistan showcasing a sudden, mindless cross firing from every country's consulate on that road (including China, USA, Israel and many more) which simply makes you wonder that what exactly the makers wished to portray here in the name of political satire or comedy?

The film's basic storyline moves with no specific direction and just keeps wandering into various sub-plots offering only a few interesting moments in its climax as the saving grace. The cinematography doesn't give you anything extraordinary to mention but the VFX are pretty amateurish right from the first sequence of a ship drowning in a sea-storm. Background score tries hard to generate some forced laughter whereas the soundtrack doesn't come up with even a single impressive track despite the presence of a terrific dancer Lauren (in an item number).

As a performer with superb comic timing, Arshad Warsi mostly (tries to) steals the show but Jackie comes up with a few witty one liners too at regular intervals making his presence felt. Yet their act together cannot be termed as something highly entertaining due to the lackluster script and its meaningless progression written vaguely. Lauren Gottlieb is simply there because of her eye-catching looks and dancing ability. Plus the supporting cast fails to make any significant impact on the viewer, particularly the actors portraying the roles of American officers dragging the film to the levels of a poor B-grade venture.

In all, apart from few entertaining dialogues and a somewhat engaging culmination, the film has nothing much to offer in terms of either comedy or satire. But then it also depends upon 'what exactly you consider to be too stupid or funny' as per your personal choice. Besides, friends who have already seen FILMISTAN are going to find some exactly similar sequences too as the one focusing on Cricket match between India and Pakistan.

Moreover I really doubt how sportingly the film would be taken by our Pakistani friends watching such silly depiction of their people, the city and the authorities in its various scenes.

such a bad movie, only trailer was good to watch
sulemanx30 May 2015
overall movie used such bad graphics effects, poor cinematography and lame script. it was first time that i left movie at interval. not worth watching if you do not enjoy bad jokes. it was a low budget movie, actors seems to do some over action, and story line is not even keeping you interested in movie, its just a time pass movie. but not worth it. Arshad Warsi was bit better in acting but overall the acting and script was so bad, i wish i had gone to watch some other movie. i did not enjoy this movie at all. This movie reflects negativity against Pakistan, and spread wrong message to the world, it wasn't even shoot in Karachi, but they showed as it was in Karachi. Also portrayed bad image of Pakistan as a terrorist country.

Dead In Karachi. ♦ 11%
nairtejas29 May 2015
I will get straight to the point and save you time by explaining (and hopefully convincing) why you should skip Welcome 2 Karachi for life.

The story about two Indian idiots, Kedar (Bhagnani) and Shammi (Warsi) trying to go to America through seaways using a motor boat and, instead landing in Pakistan sounds like an ideal base for a satire. However, the film starts, fools around, and ends with absurdity as its main and the only ingredient. Since it is a satire one does not pay attention to the story. But to depend on extremely unpleasant jokes and cooked-up situations is like depending on the US to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan.

The performances are not pleasant either. Bhagnani acts pure dumb, but then he does not put much effort into it as acting dumb comes naturally to him. Although, he does play the comedian if we compare him with the lunar eclipse Warsi, who looks dull after his long hiatus from the screen. Gottlieb cannot act, nor can she deliver her dialogs properly. She should stick to brain-numbing dancing.

All said and done, one will enjoy only few chuckles that are caused by random comic situations, which are, for your information, only present in the first half. The second half is worse than Roy (2015) and Kuch Kuch Locha Hai (2015) put together. Plus, I could also sense some exaggeration regarding the depiction of the Pakistani life. Clearly, Pakistan as a country is not as bad as the film showcases it to be.

BOTTOM LINE: Welcome 2 Karachi is a satire film which takes it audience on a 2-hour long ride so that it can show how it is NOT a satire film. Skip for life.

RATING: 1 star out of 10.

Can be watched with a typical Indian family? YES

Crap.......!!
mz_sahito1236 June 2015
I voted it 1 because there is no less rating than ONE available on IMDb. The story line is ineffective and very boring in its own origin. Making no sense at all, this film just suggests how persistent India is on trying to prove Pakistan as a Terrorist Country and a NO GO area for the citizens of the World. What is shameful is the fact that despite knowing the entire track of the movies, Many Pakistani artists decided to take part in this conspiracy. In short this is not worth watching, It is neither funny nor close to anything like Reality. Pakistan is making much more sensible movies these days, Rush to wath'em in cinemas near your house. This Movie is only a shameful act of trying to get World audience against Pakistan. If you want to know real Karachi, Visit it. P.S with your full legal documents :D Off-course .

Funny? Not Really...
namashi_131 May 2015
'Welcome 2 Karachi' is a so-so comedy, that, despite a promising premise, isn't entirely convincing nor funny. Its a mixed-bag!

'Welcome 2 Karachi' Synopsis: Two good for nothing guys accidentally land up in Karachi, Pakistan & what follows is a series of unfortunate events.

'Welcome 2 Karachi' has some funny moments & they deserve credit for that. The first-hour is pretty fine, with the journey of its bumbling protagonists offering some good sequences. But, the film nosedives in its second-hour, which doesn't work. The narrative just falls flat. The jokes stop working & the culmination, is far from effective. In short, a lively first-hour manages some laughs, but the second-hour is entirely disappointing.

The Screenplay rides on a good premise, but it never makes much use of it. Ashish R Mohan's Direction is passable. Cinematography is eye-filling. Editing is ordinary. Music by Various Artists is energetic.

Performance-Wise: Arshad Warsi is in full goofy mode & he's mastered his comic-timing. Jackky Bhagnani puts in a sincere effort to leave an impression, but he succeeds only in parts. Lauren Gottlieb is strictly okay.

On the whole, 'Welcome 2 Karachi' is an okay watch.

Jacky n Arshad try to save...but film overall sinks
akshatsheth0829 May 2015
Story: Shammi (Arshad Warsi) and Kedar Patel (Jackky Bhagnani) are like Lloyd and Dunne of Dumb and Dumber. They are bestiez who have grown up together. Kedar is the son of Mitesh Patel (Dalip Tahil) who is an event manager for weddings in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Shammi on the other hand is an ex-navy officer who is kicked out of the force thanks to his stupidity. While Kedar is obsessed with going to the U.S., after being rejected a visa because of his surname.

On a drunk night, Shammi suggests that he and Kedar leave for America on a cruise, even though they laugh it off in that instance, in a freak accident by the sea, Kedar and Shammi who are supposed to manage a wedding baraat on a cruise, leave without the baraatis only to lose their direction and land up in Karachi, Pakistan.

What entails is a series of stupid events as they enter forbidden territories of Taliban.

Star Performances: Arshad Warsi as Shammi Thakur is decent enough. He does what he is best at, excel at the comic timing but it's just that the content does not support much here. We have seen him do much more rib tickling fun in other films and I wonder what made him choose this.

Jackky Bhagnani as Kedar Patel tries his best to perfect the Gujarati accent and he does manage a good attempt. Only in a certain scenes, it becomes ham but overall he holds it well. His character is an understatement for dumb and he pulls it off just fine.

Lauren Gottlieb promoted this film with full swing but little did we know that she has only a blink and miss performance in the film. She essays the role of an Intelligence officer but other than her song Shakira, she hardly has any screen space.

Direction, editing & screenplay: Ashish R Mohan directs this film and well, I have a lot of complaints for him. To start off, the film's special effects look pathetic and the scene where Shammi and Kedar are caught in the sea storm, the special effects used are so weak that even TV serials have better ones.

Secondly, if it is a comedy film, one need not use background music that hammers into your head the cues for every upcoming joke. I am completely not in favour of those 'tings' and 'tongs' that play pre and post jokes as if watching a comedy show.

The first half in itself is a tiring ride with majority of the gags failing and so when the second half kick starts, you have already given up on the film. The curse of the first half continues in the second, leaving you wanting to see predictable ending. The film has an open ending and well, if they earlier thought of continuing with a sequel, the makers need to sleep on it and forget this dream.

Basically, the director tries nothing to save his already shoddy content as even the music has disappointing tracks.

The Last Word: Welcome to Karachi promises nothing but slapstick humor. There is not one moment in the film where you get a good laugh and sadly not even a satirical one. This proved to be a yawn-fest for me and I am going with a 4/10 for the film.

Welcome to Karachi: A Daring Cinematic Attempt At Comedy, Bromance & Unorthodox Screenplay
mohulghosh31 May 2015
On a very broader, macro level, 'Welcome To Karachi' is heavily inspired from the concept which created Dumb and Dumber franchisee: The protagonists are dumb, half-wit but smart enough to pull it through.

It takes guts to experiment with such cinema in Bollywood, as comedy lies in the crust and everything seems like a spoof, a deliberate alternate take on the realities. The script has to be intelligent, the dialogues need to be sharp, witty and there should be an underlying message for the audience.

I am glad to say that Ashish R Mohan's 'Welcome To Karachi' proves it's mettle on every count, and thus, a new form of cinema has been created which needs attention. If Rohit Shetty's Golmaal series and Sunday can become 100 crore grosser, then Welcome To Karachi at least deserves applause. (Incidentally, Ashish was Asst. Director for Rohit Shetty's previous movies)

I am really appalled by the negative reviews this movie has received from major critics. Considering that the movie is fictional, the characters are dumb (intentionally) and there is high degree of brain dead comic sequences, why has the critics tried to discover logic here.

Arshad Warsi is the pillar of this movie, with his impeccable performance and timely humor, he dominates the screen. But credit should go to Jackky Bhagnani, as he has improved a lot. In some of the comic scenes, he has acted fabulously, as the audience finds hard to resist the laugh.

But the highlight of the movie is the screenplay: its twisted, bended and molded as per the situation and rather builds up the tempo at every point. Yes, the graphics and special effects could have been better, but it's the way of telling a story which makes all the difference, and Ashish has done a remarkable job here. Special mention of the way Pakistan has been shown – its actually funny. Director has thought creatively here, and has tried to interlink global issues, including terrorism with the plot. Songs are again, unconventional and radically different from what regular Bollywood movies churn out. 'Chal Bhag' will remain with you long after you leave the theater.

Dialogues are crispy, hilarious and hard hitting: Apt for such type of cinema, where the main characters have to justify their stupidity at every scene. Somehow, each of these factors are aligned perfectly to create an intelligent yet half-wit laugh riot which will make you laugh out loud, with guarantee.

Due to the daring attempt at creating a cinema which has, unfortunately, few takers in India, I will give 'Welcome to Karachi' 7/10. Go, watch it if you are taking life seriously!

This film overstays its welcome
akshay-ranganathan30 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
After 'Youngistaan', where we discovered the actual acting chops from Jackky Bhagnani, he decided to experiment with the most difficult genre ever, and that is 'Comedy'. Well experimenting is not bad, if the screenplay evokes laughter in the audience, tickles their funny bone, till they die laughing. But you'll get to know about the result of the movie, 'Welcome 2 Karachi', which is by the way the second pairing of Arshad-Jackky duo and second directorial of 'Khiladi 786' fame Ashish R. Mohan.

The plot being inspired from 'Harold & Kumar: Escape from Guantanamo Bay' and the gags inspired from 'Dumb & Dumber', the film is about the two dimwits (Jackky Bhagnani & Arshad Warsi), who try to go to the United States of America, using the sea-route, illegally, after the former one (Jackky) being repeatedly denied visa by the American Embassy, and the latter one (Arshad) being sacked from his Naval- officer duty. Due to a storm on the sea, the boat lands on the shores of Pakistan. What follows from here is chaos, chaos and nothing but chaos.

The plot had so much potential, but the writers (Vrajesh Hirjee, Ashish R. Mohan, Kushal Ved Bakshi and Danish Hussain) clearly rely on juvenile jokes, from the ones involving fart to the word f****r, which sparsely evokes giggles. And they are often repeated. The 'ban' joke, as well as the fake Muslim names by the protagonists were quite hilarious, these scenes left me in splits, but before and after that, each and every one-liner or a gag left me giggled or were just unfunny. Direction (Ashish R. Mohan) focuses on action scenes more than the comedic moments. Moreover, the second half is more unfunny than the first one, and on top of that the shoddy VFX plays a spoilsport. Music (Jeet Ganguly, Rochak Kohli and Amjad Nadeem) is just ignorable, except for 'Chal Bhaag', which justifies one of the situations of the film. Background score is just plain average. Editing (Steven Bernard) is disappointingly average, from the master editor of many Rohit Shetty movies. Cinematography (Mark Nutkins) is again, average. Choreography (Bosco-Caesar, F. A. Khan and Brinda) is nothing special.

Off the cast, Jackky Bhagnani stereotypes Gujaratis badly. He evokes sparse giggles, yes, but this time he hams, instead of acting. Arshad Warsi, though tried to carry the whole movie on his shoulders, was badly wasted, so was Lauren Gottlieb. Rest of the cast just overact a lot.

On the whole, 'Welcome 2 Karachi' just overstays its welcome. After a promising trailer, we thought it might tickle our funny bone for good, but, it left us disappointed and cheated. It is not another 'Filmistaan' or another 'Tere Bin Laden'. It's just plain boring, though intermittently funny. I go with a three out of ten rating.

Very Funny
rohanal30 March 2018
Although the movie is overexagerated, this is one of the more funny Hindi movies recently released. It is not so stupid that it becomes annoying, but is clever, silly and a comic relief worth watching. It also has a cool soundtrack and makes fun of several cultures. Overall, it is a well made film thats worth watching.

Absolute rubbish
jafferabbass28 November 2019
A spoof is good when reality is twisted in a very obvious way. This movie demonstrates a complete lack understanding of Pakistan. Just for clarity, Pakistan is not like a Muslim ghetto in India.

There are many comedies made by misplacing characters in different geographical situations. This is absolute rubbish.

Plays to Indian Stereotypes of Pakistan
kabeer_kaleem23 July 2020
This is just symptomatic of the wider problem of Bollywood. Playing to age old stereotypes of Pakistan, Karachi being one of the most cosmopolitan cities of Pakistan is portrayed as an Indian ghetto. Pakistani Cinema is on the rise and I can see wee why when one dimensional films like these are behind released from Bollywood.

Very enjoyable spoof
aparna-7954930 May 2015
Loved this movie, because it was very different from the run of the mill comedies that have slapstick humor and below the belt jokes. It was very 'decent' and hilarious. The second half was funnier than the first. Very creative story. Great acting by Arshad Warsi and Jacky Bhagnani. If you love to laugh and would like to watch a 'non-formula' movie - this is for you. The scenes during a cricket-match, in the courtroom, in an American prison etc. were very funny. Also, this movie was all about fun and showed no disrespect to anyone. Should have more movies like this one, with no run of the mill love stories, songs, violence and slapstick. It was original and fresh.

Comedy Films have a new nature to them - 'Welcome to Karachi'.
vaishalirathod28 May 2015
Week after week of watching the same item numbers, the snazzy European locations and stilted dialogues catering to the NRIs create a sense of fatigue and boredom. And the film buff almost makes a decision to take a breather and stay away for a while.

But then comes a film like Welcome to Karachi and hope is rekindled all over again. This movie is an example of making Bollywood realize how important script is.Making someone laugh is hard, but making someone fall off his/her chair is, according to me, the hardest exercise. Nowadays, Indian Cinema's usual blockbusters have been Comedies. They have become the flavor of the season. Now add, 'Welcome to Karachi' in that long-list. Comedy Films have a new nature to them - 'Welcome to Karachi'.

Watch for a good script and commendable execution of the IDEA" confusion ahead
avrittimishra28 May 2015
After a long long time, I was overjoyed after watching some movie. Wonderfully written script and at the top of that marvelous execution on the screen. A commendable screen play it was in the movie. With the theme of Confusion and its side effects , movie progresses. First few scenes give you a gut feeling that its not a routine come and go movie and after some 20 minutes, movie changes its gear. After interval you find yourself so engrossed in the movie that you starts guessing What's next... and end of the movie gifts you a good humor.

There is nobody in the cast, who did not do justice with their role. Arshad played his trademark comic role mercurially. It was an effortless, flawless, natural act from Jackky after honest effort in Youngistaan. Few other Pakistani actors also leaves their own flavour. The best part of the movie is, you never loose your smile. The light, humorous and a little sarcastic way of presenting some of the very sensitive truths of our society is really commendable. I am overwhelmed by watching this movie and hope, it would be liked and appreciated more than those clungy, crampy, non-sense movies, which are over flowing in the bollywood these days.

Enjoyed it thoroughly
a_nandkeolyar30 May 2015
This is not a run of the mill comedy with below the belt humor or slapstick, its very eccentric and cerebral humor - good and pure fun. More of a parody. The plot and story are very creative and quite original and the movie does not bad-mouth any community/country - just a parody of the many situations in South Asia. The screenplay was very intelligent taking into account the 'International scenario' and 'International relations'. If you go to the theater expecting slapstick comedy or a formula driven love story - this is not for you. But, if you want to watch an original parody and laugh at some incredibly comic scenes - this is for you.

W2K is a stress buster family movie... as usual Arshad warsi has done a great work, thanks to his comic timings and punches.... u will lol over the Gujarati ascent of jackky bhagnani....... the songs are superb, specially "mera yaar funtastic" and "Lalla Lalla Lohri"

The story of the movie is something like this two Indians from India reaches Karachi in Pakistan without any passport and id's now they are stuck in Pakistan and realizing the situation of India and Pakistan this movie will be worth watching as what happens to these two when they reach Pakistan

The film has been shot in various parts of the United Kingdom including Bradford, Birmingham and Wales and sets were recreated to resemble Karachi.
