Karen Radzyner.
Screen Nsw development and production executive Karen Radzyner is spearheading Screen Nsw.s new script development program, Amplifier. If gets the lowdown on how it differs from its predecessor.
Why the change from Aurora to Amplifier?
Amplifier will build on Aurora.s successes, this time with an individual focus on each project. We wanted to signal the change in the program to the industry. Giving it a new name and shape we hope will magnify Amplifier.s fresh approach.
What are the key differences?
The main difference is the bespoke nature of the program. Its defining factor is that it is customised to the individual projects. We will make the key decisions about how Amplifier: Adaptation can best nurture each project, only when we know those projects have been selected. In this way, we can work with the creative teams to make Screen Nsw's funding and relationships...

While the screen industry has plenty to celebrate as Australian films are set to finish the year with around $87 million in B.O. takings, the results show a sizable number of films failed to address fundamental questions.
Namely: Who precisely will watch my film and which cinemas will play it at a time when theatrical release here increasingly is a sure way to lose money?
Screen Australia CEO Graeme Mason is delighted with the range of films and documentaries that have resonated with audiences this year.
Mad Max Fury Road, The Dressmaker, Oddball and The Water Diviner all grossed more than $10 million, and Paper Planes just under. Last Cab to Darwin, Blinky Bill: The Movie, That Sugar Film and Holding the Man performed well, although Mason believes Neil Armfield.s gay-themed romance, which grossed $1.2 million, deserved to make double that.
Still, Mason questions the mindset of a sizable section of the screen industry.

Screen Australia has confirmed Australian films have surpassed the all-time box office record of $63.4 million set in 2001, as If has reported.
With a total gross of more than $64 million, local films' share of the box-office is 6.8 per cent, the best since 2001.
Screen Australia CEO Graeme Mason said: .It.s so wonderful to see Australian films connecting so strongly this year. The film industry is somewhat cyclical, so it is difficult to make claims based on one year.s results alone.
"However, it is also important to celebrate success when it comes along, and given that the theatrical landscape is more challenging than ever before, Australian films have well and truly over-performed.
"I think we.re on track for a particularly outstanding year — my prediction is that we.ll reach over $70 million by the end of 2015, setting a new benchmark..

Screen Australia has started a scoping study to figure out new approaches to building pride in Australian films.
The workshopping of ideas is a tacit recognition that the Australian cinema .brand. was tarnished last year by a string of films that underperformed at the B.O., reflected in the lowly market share of 2.43 per cent.
Arguably the brand wasn.t the underlying problem as audiences this year have readily embraced The Water Diviner, Paper Planes, Mad Max: Fury Road and That Sugar Film, in addition to the well-received Frackman and Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead.
Moviegoers may well feel more even confident about the entertainment value of national cinema with Brendan Cowell.s Ruben Guthrie and Gillian Armstrong's Women He's Undressed launching next week, followed by Jeremy Sims' Last Cab to Darwin, Simon Stone's The Daughter, Jocelyn Moorhouse's The Dressmaker, Neil Armfield's Holding the Man and Stuart McDonald.s Oddball.

The Australian B.O. is running hot, outpacing last year by more than 14%, and some industry mavens predict 2015 will set an all-time record.
Distributors and exhibitors are more than usually confident about the second half release line-up, including at least half a dozen Australian films.
Powered by Mad Max: Fury Road ($20.5 million in five weeks), Paper Planes and The Water Diviner,. local films have raked in $42.8 million this year, already eclipsing the paltry 2014 calendar total of $26.1 million and 2013.s $38.5 million.
The Sydney Film Festival looks like being an effective launching pad for Brendan Cowell's Ruben Guthrie (which opens on July 16 via Madman), Gillian Armstrong's Women He's Undressed (Rialto, also July 16), Jeremy Sims'. Last Cab to Darwin (Icon, August 6), Neil Armfield.s Holding the Man (Transmission, August 27) and Simon Stone.s The Daughter (Roadshow, September 10).

As an ad man in AA, Patrick Brammall convinces in Brendan Cowell’s film debut, whose glossy cynicism comes from a thoughtful place – the theatre
In director Billy Wilder’s 1945 classic The Lost Weekend, one of cinema’s earliest serious depictions of alcoholism, Ray Milland plays Don Birnam, an off-the-wagon writer embarking on an epic five-day bender. He sheds all kinds of moral scruples and ends up like a character in an Edgar Allen Poe story – in hospital screaming in terror at hallucinations caused by delirium tremens.
Ruben Guthrie, the booze-guzzling protagonist of writer-director Brendan Cowell’s impressive Sydney-set feature debut – the opening film of the 2015 Sydney film festival – gets off comparatively lightly. The award-winning ad man’s wakeup call is a broken arm inflicted by jumping off the roof of his waterfront mansion.

Led by Mad Max: Fury Road, Australian films collectively have raked in $34.6 million at cinemas this year, eclipsing the paltry 2014 calendar year total of $26.1 million.
With $12.6 million in the till after its second weekend (a modest drop of 33%), George Miller.s high-octane action-adventure is the top earning local release.
Some Aussie exhibs expect Miller's film to reach $20 million so the 2015 total will soon overtake 2013's $38.5 million... .
Given the upcoming line-up, which includes Jeremy Sims. Last Cab to Darwin, Brendan Cowell.s Ruben Guthrie, Jocelyn Moorhouse.s The Dressmaker, Simon Stone.s The Daughter, Michael Petroni.s Backtrack and Stuart McDonald.s Oddball, there is plenty of upside for the industry.
If there are at least one or two break-out hits and a couple of solid performers, it may not be a stretch to beat 2012.s $47.8 million. In the past 10 years the record is 2009.s $54.7 million.

Australian films are experiencing a resurgence in cinemas this year, raking in $21.7 million through April 20.
That.s way up on the $13.7 million collected in the first four months last year, when The Railway Man, Wolf Creek 2 and Tracks were the only significant contributors.
Given the upcoming release line-up including George Miller.s Mad Max: Fury Road, Jeremy Sims' Last Cab to Darwin, Brendan Cowell's Ruben Guthrie,. Jocelyn Moorhouse.s The Dressmaker, Simon Stone.s The Daughter and Michael Petroni.s Backtrack, the industry is on course to far surpass the 2014. total of $26.1 million from 39 films and feature documentaries plus holdovers.
Almost certainly 2015 will be a far bigger year for Oz cinema than 2013.s $38.5 million, and probably 2012.s $47.8 million. In the past 10 years the record is 2009.s $54.7 million.
