The WWE today is still in full swing and is more popular than ever before but back in the day, when guys like Triple H, the Undertaker, and even Shawn Michaels were just getting started, the legends of the WWE, then WWF, ring still held sway. Greats like the Macho Man Randy Savage (ooooohh yeeeeah!), Hulk Hogan, Rick Rude, Andre the Giant, and many, many more were already legends in their own time and needed no introduction. Back in those days man, wrestling was still something to be in awe of, and if you said it was staged then you

Lance Russell, longtime professional wrestling commentator, died on Tuesday at age 91. His passing was announced on Twitter by WWE legend Jerry Lawler, whose matches Russell called on “Championship Wrestling” in Memphis. Though he was a broadcaster, Russell became as much of a star among Memphis wrestling fans as the wrestlers themselves thanks to his interviews with stars like Lawler, Bill Dundee, and Jimmy Hart. Russell called out heels with a disgusted tone when they attempted to cheat in a match, but doing so with acidic wit rather than yelling. This led to confrontations between him and the show’s villains,...

Wrestling! To some, a ludicrous, campy, steroid-fueled home of unintentional comedy; to others a true art form, a kind of theater that dates back centuries, a modern comedia dell’arte executed with as much skill and artistry as anything else out there. Either way, its impact on cinema is inarguable, from the brief screen career of Hulk Hogan to Darren Aronofsky’s moving, Oscar-winning “The Wrestler.”
With former WWE star Dwayne Johnson now possibly the biggest star in the world, that continues to be the case, and one performer who’s followed his path with a surprising degree of success is Dave Bautista.

"Stone Cold" Steve Austin vs The Rock- Wrestlemania 17
“Shaking hands with Satan himself.”
Wrestlemania 17, hands down, is the best Wrestlemania booked to date. Apart from a horribly short Women’s Championship match with Chyna facing off against Ivory, from the opening match to the main event, every match was great.
The main event of the show was "Stone Cold" Steve Austin vs The Rock. The previous year, Austin had been recovering from long needed neck surgery sustained at the hands of Owen Hart at Summerslam 1997. During his time away, superstars like The Rock and Triple H stepped up their game and became main event players in their own right. When you are out of action for close to a year, there is a very real fear that by the time you get back in the ring you would have lost a step or two. Or worse, that the fans would...

Hulk Hogan’s status with the WWE isn’t exactly in its strongest state so him doing a commercial poking fun at pro wrestling seems a bit strange at the moment. Then again he won his Gawker lawsuit and has a lot of money coming his way so perhaps he doesn’t care? Hogan is featured in a hilarious new commercial for Dutch insurance company Centraal Beheer. Considering he hasn’t been in the WWE since 2014 because of his leaked racially insensitive comments, is this is way of saying “adios WWE?” It’s tough to say. Regardless of his status you have to admit

Portland, Oregon is a city rich in history when it comes to professional wrestling. Starting with the territory owned by Don Owens, it saw the rise of performers like Billy Jack Haynes, Jimmy Snuka, and the legendary “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. Today, the big dog in town of course is the WWE. Tonight at the Moda Center, the WWE held Monday Night Raw and I had the pleasure of attending the show live.
WWE Camera Crew at work
This was not the first Monday Night Raw I’ve ever attended. That distinction belongs to the episode that played on August 27th, 2001 at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Time flies when you’re having fun and to think that close to sixteen years have passed since I last attended an episode of Raw blows my mind. (I did attend the WWE Pay per View The Bash in 2009 at Arco Arena in Sacramento,...

January 24th, 1988 was a great day in wrestling history. On that date, live on the USA Network, the WWE held their first ever Royal Rumble. In classic Vince McMahon fashion, holding this event for free on cable was a way to keep folks from ordering the Bunkhouse Stampede pay per view Jim Crockett Promotions put out that same day. The Royal Rumble match itself was revolutionary. Starting with two performers in the ring, at regularly timed intervals, another performer would come out until, in the case of the 1988 Royal Rumble, all twenty participants were in the ring. The winner of that first Rumble was Hacksaw Jim Duggan.
Fast forward 29 years and here we are at the 30th Royal Rumble. Unlike the Rumble’s that have occurred the past five years, the WWE has done an amazing job of promoting this event. They have some great matches in store as well...

WWE Smackdown Live! is in the books for the week. The Blue Brand of the WWE wrapped up their go home show, preparing for the Royal Rumble. How did the show do this week?
To start, I really enjoyed the verbal exchange between John Cena and Aj Styles. What I loved about it was some of the unspoken subtext Cena sprinkled through into the mix. If you listen to the promos that both men gave, on paper you’d be hard pressed to find an excuse for why Cena is being presented as anything but a bad guy. Whether it be a build up to an actual heel turn or more likely, microphone work that is being used to manipulate fans like myself into reading more into a feud than is actually there, Cena is walking a fine line between a confident good guy and someone who is just a plain,...

This time of year the WWE makes every effort they can to step up their performance. With Wrestlemania around the corner, they want to make sure as many eyes as possible are watching the Granddaddy of Them All. It’s also a time to reflect and honor the past as this is usually the time of year they start announcing the next WWE Hall of Fame class. Thanks to Bryan Alvarez from the Wrestling Observer, we may have some clue as to who will be a part of the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2017. Let’s discuss the picks now but remember, until they’re confirmed by the WWE, these choices are strictly rumor at this point.
Diamond Dallas Page
A deserving choice if there ever was one. Starting off as a manager, he worked his way up in his late 30’s to become a wrestler and eventual WCW World Champion.

This week has seen its fair share of rumor mill activity, and it's always interesting to see how things shake out as time goes on. Something that's true one day can end up being undone the next, so let's try and keep track of what's going on out there.

Brooke told TMZ Sports over the weekend that "people have been calling [Hulk] about WrestleMania" ... sending wrestling fans into a frenzy. Fyi -- Hulk was fired by the company in 2015. But not so fast ... 'cause Hulk says it simply ain't true. Appearing on the “Bischoff on Wrestling” podcast, Hulk shot down Brooke's claim.

1.Sad news this week in the world of pro wrestling when it was announced that legendary performer Mr. Fuji, Harry Fujiwara, passed away at the age of 83. Mr. Fuji had a long stay in the business, first as an in ring performer, collecting many tag team championships around the world, than as a manager of such acts as Demolition and The Powers of Pain. He also had a reputation as a ribber, someone in the business who pulls pranks to lighten the mood. Hearing a couple of the ribs he pulled off as they were discussed on the Eric Bischoff podcast when he interviewed Hulk Hogan, I have to say I am glad I never made that guy angry. Hide your cats! (Listen to the podcast to find out why.) Mr. Fuji was a legend and will be missed.

1.Adam Cole came out victorious, as predicted by me last week, at Death Before Dishonor. It’s a well deserved victory for an up and coming star. What that victory, it caps Ring of Honor’s first real attempt at an episodic story line. One legitimate issue I’ve had with Ring of Honor television is the fact that apart from some rudimentary nods to their Pay Per Views, the shows have been random matches that have no real meaning. Wrestling is story telling. If we wanted to see two guys, or ladies, fight, we’d watch Mma. While the story was spotty, the fact they found a way to keep us viewed to the screen every week is a step in the right direction if the company hopes to expand. One bit of advice I have for Ring of Honor. Get Steve Corino back on color commentary! You have...

Professional wrestling has had several moments. Moments when it crossed over into the mainstream and became a temporary part of the greater pop culture consciousness. While many folks may recall The Attitude Era, that gave the world stars like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, there was arguably no bigger zeitgeist moment for professional wrestling than the Rock n Wrestling Connection era. That period, which lasted from the mid 1980s to the early 1990s gave us Hulk Hogan, "The Macho Man" Randy Savage, Ultimate Warrior, and- of course- the legendary Andre The Giant.
Andre The Giant (real name Andre Roussimoff) was an integral part of that boom. He was a crossover star and an ambassador for the industry. If you knew nothing about wrestling, you still knew who Andre The Giant was. He even appeared in the beloved 80s cult classic, The Princess Bride, which helped cement...

PWInsider is reporting that after months of competing on the Nxt brand, Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa have finally been signed to full-time WWE contracts.
Gargano and Ciampa are two of the most respected talents on the U.S. independent scene. Following news earlier this year that parent company Panda Energy International was looking to sell part of the rights to Tna Entertainment, LLC, The Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer is reporting that a serious party with an interest in investing has emerged.
A sticking point between the two sides, however, is that the potential buyer wants an estimated 55% of the wrestling promotion, while Tna President Dixie Carter wants Panda to maintain majority control.
Tna was founded in 2002 by Jeff and Jerry Jarrett, who used a weekly PPV model to air company programming rather than getting a television deal. This proved to be financially unsuccessful, and when a key investor pulled out only months after the company formed, Tna looked to be doomed. In October of 2002, Carter convinced her parents, the owners of Panda Energy, to invest in Tna, and the Carters bought a 71% share in the promotion. Since then,...

In October of 2002, Carter convinced her parents, the owners of Panda Energy, to invest in Tna, and the Carters bought a 71% share in the promotion. Since then,...

Cesaro is scheduled to make in-ring return next month as part of WWE’s post WrestleMania live tour in Europe.
Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer reports that he will replace Neville, who recently suffered a fractured ankle on the tour.
Cesaro tore the rotator cuff in his left shoulder back in September. Despite working through the injury for two months, the pain became unbearable and surgery was obviously needed.
The King Of Swing wrestled his last match for WWE on November 17th at the SmackDown tapings against The Miz. The night before that, Cesaro lost a match on Raw to Roman Reigns in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship tournament.
Originally diagnosed with a four to six month recovery timetable, Cesaro looks to come back right in the middle.

Ever since the WWE Network launched in February 2014, fans and wrestlers alike have shared concerns over how it would affect the pay levied toward current and former talents. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, those concerns have now reached the point where several unnamed former superstars are considering litigation against the company.
Prior to the debut of the Network, WWE’s DVD and Blu-Ray releases were a major part of the company’s merchandise revenues, and any and all talents – past and present – featured on the documentaries, events, and more were compensated with royalties. For the past two years, the network has archived the bulk of its documentary features while also streaming all past PPV (and many television) matches, rendering the DVD and Blu-Ray releases largely obsolete. The company still profits off the footage by charging a monthly fee for the network, but apparently, the wrestlers don’t...

In early January, John Cena suffered a shoulder injury that threw WrestleMania into disarray and threatened to put him on the shelf for between six and nine months. While Cena has shown an uncanny healing ability in the past and has returned from injuries way ahead of schedule, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that a July return date looks likely for the 15-time world champion.
News of Cena’s injury broke the first week of the year, and he underwent surgery on January 7. Prior to getting hurt, the multi-time WrestleMania headliner was scheduled to face The Undertaker in a “Battle of Legends” at this year’s event. Given Cena’s propensity for returning from injury early, many – including Vince McMahon – held out hope that WWE’s top star would still be able to make the show. In early February, insiders got word that Cena wouldn’t be able to participate,...

Last month, WWE announced that they would return to Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan (Sumo Hall) for a pair of events on July 1 and 2. Now, it seems like the seeds are being sown for a potential main-event bout on one of the shows.
It had been rumored that recent WWE signing Shinsuke Nakamura – who is legitimately one of the biggest pro wrestling stars in all of Japan – would be headlining the shows against main roster WWE talent. Chris Jericho seems to have thrown his hat into the ring, starting a Twitter feud with “The King of Strong Style” that the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports is scheduled to lead to a singles contest at Sumo Hall.
When compared unfavorably to Nakamura by a fan on the social media site, Jericho replied, “Nakamura means nothing. He’s a minor league Jericho wannabe.” He then tweeted, in response to a completely unrelated Nakamura tweet,...

Professional wrestling has forever predicated itself on the man-made mythology of its inhabitants. The men and women behind the costumes and the roles have had to live up to hyperbole and promotion, both of which raise expectations of the consumer. The very best have made good on the hype, matching every otherworldly promise that story could call upon.
Wrestling is also a nostalgic endeavor for fans, something that entertains from the cradle to the grave. Today’s fan has lived through several generations and eras of sports entertainment, and they’ve witnessed the exploits of countless icons that inspired them through their TV screens. Through that nostalgia, we as longtime fans do become wistful for the good old days of enjoying wrestling in our respective youths. The simpler days, we’ll say.

We know all about those, we have been unfortunate enough to suffer through them.
But what about those plans that never got off the drawing board? What of those ideas that remained unpopped kernels in the minds of the creative team? How different could the landscape of modern professional wrestling be had some of these shocking plans actually made it onto our screens?

On March 7, World Wrestling Entertainment announced Big Boss Man as the newest inductee into the Hall of Fame class of 2016.
One of the best heavyweights of his or any generation, the double-tough Georgian had two stints with the company that produced tremendous results. As the former prison guard out of Cobb County, Georgia, he first established himself as a hated heel, determined to put Hulk Hogan down and out of professional wrestling.
Over time, though, he showed great respect and dignity, doing the right thing during a program involving Jake Roberts and Ted Dibiase and turning babyface in the process. It was in that role that he is most remembered, an upper midcard performer who mixed it up with main event talent on occasion but could always be trusted to carry any program handed down to him by management.

Nowadays, WrestleMania storylines too often take the form of vanity projects. Participants in the higher-profile matches crave emphatic victories over their iconic foes for aparently no other reasons except to have a ‘WrestleMania moment’, or to boost their own ‘legacy’.
Whatever happened to the storylines where somebody would be horribly wronged, bide their time, and then annihilate the villain in front of wrestling’s largest viewing audience? If anything, I’d wager the increasing disconnect between the audience and the product is due to an increasing lack in such stories. From Rocky Balboa to Frank Castle to Bruce Wayne to Paul Kersey (that’s Charles Bronson in Death Wish, kiddos), there are plenty of three-dimensional characters through the ages that prove there’s money to be made in selling revenge fantasies.
Wrestling used to be pretty good at this in the days before the executives would pat themselves...

The Undertaker is the single-most enduring character in World Wrestling Entertainment history, and existed long before the company was even going by that branding. Since 1990, ‘The Deadman’ has been a vital part of Vince McMahon’s operation, regardless of what he’s doing or who he’s facing.
It’s a real credit to Mark Calaway – the man behind the infamous gimmick – that he has been able to constantly tweak his act in order to stay relevant. Over the years, Undertaker has consistently evolved to fit each era, eventually returning to the roots of the character and ultimately coming full circle.
Listen to anyone from Steve Austin, Shawn Michaels and Triple H, to Vince McMahon, Paul Heyman and Jim Ross, and they will tell you that there’s nobody quite like The Undertaker. It makes sense to imagine that Calaway has had some run ins with management over the years,...

For every “Stone Cold” Steve Austin vs. The Rock and Hulk Hogan vs. Andre The Giant, there are two or three underrated storylines that have helped to make WrestleMania the can’t-miss extravaganza it is.
They are the feuds and rivalries that have been overshadowed or lost in the shuffle underneath the programs that have come to define the event. While everyone remembers Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker at the 25th incarnation of the show, the sibling war between Jeff and Matt Hardy on the undercard was accompanied by a story as strong as any other on the broadcast, yet few talk about it today.
WrestleMania X is an epic show, with two legitimate five-star matches featuring Bret vs. Owen Hart and Razor Ramon vs. Shawn Michaels, but there is a very strong program supporting those two matches on the undercard, as Randy Savage and Crush brought their heated rivalry to a conclusion.

Shinsuke Nakamura might be headed to Nxt to start his WWE career, but he’s not being paid like your typical Nxt performer.
According to a report this week from Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the former New Japan Pro Wrestling star is said to be making main event level money with his new WWE deal. Though the exact amount of his contract wasn’t unveiled, most main event level talents in WWE make in the high six figures or low seven figures. It’s doubtful Nakamura would have came to the United States and abandoned his native Japan without a significant payday, so the report on his contract amount isn’t all that unexpected. As one of the faces of New Japan Pro Wrestling, and arguably the best wrestler in the world, Nakamura’s departure to America earlier this year shocked fans across the globe.

The return of Shane McMahon to WWE television this week coincides with a major shift in relation to the company’s philosophy heading into WrestleMania 32 in just over a month’s time.
According to recent reports, WWE television is about to become more “edgy” over the next several weeks to build some momentum up toward the biggest show of the year.
Discussing the topic on Wednesday’s edition of Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez spoke of sources telling him that the product would see this change in philosophy, at least until WrestleMania. There were several aspects of this shift during Monday night’s show which would seem to be evidence that indicate this is indeed the case.
Vince McMahon openly dropped an “f-bomb” during his segment with Shane, causing the censors to have to mute the sound for a couple of seconds. With Vince being the owner of the company,...

Shane McMahon isn’t in a managerial position with WWE, and for now is back solely as an on air character. Wrestling Observer Radio reported that his deal was worked out in the last few weeks, although the angle for a “control of WWE” match has been in the works for years.
If Shane wins his match against The Undertaker inside Hell In A Cell at WrestleMania, he’ll win control of Raw and end The Authority. His promo on Raw this week was based on shoot aspects, specifically his hurt at not being in line to succeed his father. He left WWE in 2009, when Vince McMahon made clear to him that Stephanie McMahon and Triple H were the company’s future.
Shane is currently living and working out of New York City, where he remains active with his business interests, specifically his work with China’s You On Demand.

Conjecture is a fascinating beast, but it’s sometimes vital when analysing the world of professional wrestling. In this instance, it’s important to note that many of the ideas raised here rely on certain things happening at the next World Wrestling Entertainment pay-per-view. On February 21, the company present Fastlane, the final supershow stop before they produce WrestleMania 32 in early-April.
Due to the fact that Fastlane hasn’t happened as of the writing of this article, this list does some guess work as to outcomes on the show. After all, what happens on the coming pay-per-view will directly influence what occurs on the following evening’s episode of Monday Night Raw. That will be the first one on the home run to ‘Mania, and it simply must be huge.
Burning issues include some tension between Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns. That’s ripe for exploitation, and could help...

As we have seen from previous installments, sometimes the biggest stories in WWF/E happen off screen rather than on screen. Last time, in 1991, we learned about the identity of the mysterious Mariner, Typhoon and Shawn Michaels continued to wrestle as babyfaces after their heel turns, the Hart Foundation briefly reunited in Madison Square Garden, and Andre The Giant was scheduled to make an in-ring return, among other tidbits.
In this installment, we take a look at 1990, the beginning of a pivotal decade in WWE’s history. The Rock N Wrestling era of the 1980s, led by Hulk Hogan, was in the process of being phased out, giving rise to a new generation of wrestlers. Hogan himself began to start taking sabbaticals to film movies. Andre The Giant wrestled his last match, and The Undertaker wrestled his first. It was a period of great transition for the WWF.

One of the most pressing questions leading into WrestleMania 32 is just who The Undertaker will face. Even though his winning streak at the event was shattered by Brock Lesnar two years ago, The Phenom’s bouts are still a major drawing point for the show of shows, and odds are he doesn’t have too many left.
A battle of legends with John Cena was initially slated for the event, but Cena suffered a shoulder injury in January that was estimated to keep him out of action for six to nine months. Given that Cena often returns from injury early, many are holding out hope that he’ll be able to make the show. Still, WWE is playing it safe and assuming he won’t, so they’ve come up with a backup plan.

At Tuesday’s Smackdown! tapings, new play-by-play announcer Mauro Ranallo was absent from his post. Instead, Michael Cole filled in, reuniting the Raw announce team of Cole, Jerry Lawler, and Byron Saxton.
Many fans were nervous that this quick about-face signaled disaster for the WWE career of Ranallo, whose expert commentary has been seen as a breath of fresh air. It was especially disconcerting given that the usually Twitter-friendly broadcaster was silent in the face of fan questions regarding his status on Smackdown!
Thankfully, Ranallo’s position with WWE is safe. According to reports (and later, Ranallo himself via Twitter), the 2015 Wrestling Observer Newsletter TV Announcer of the Year was stricken with a case of the flu. He showed up to Tuesday’s Smackdown! tapings in Ontario, CA willing to work, but when management assessed his condition, they decided he would be better served by going back home to get some rest.

It’s looking more and more likely that the Fabulous Freebirds, a team that changed tag team wrestling forever, may finally be receiving their well deserved induction into the WWE Hall of Fame this year in Dallas.
The Freebirds (Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy and Buddy Roberts) starred all over the country during the 1980s, but many most fondly remember their run as part of World Class Championship Wrestling in Dallas. With the biggest show of the year taking place in the Von Erich family’s former territory that the Fabulous once ruled, a Hall of Fame induction is a no-brainer.
Clueing everyone in on the fact that this may indeed be happening was Kevin Von Erich on Twitter. He posted a message noting that WWE had given him a call to participate in WrestleMania weekend and that he indeed would be there.

Forgive me, friends. I need to take a break from the comic bookery in order to indulge in my guiltiest of pleasures – pro wrestling. A big to do went down this week, and it behooves me to share my thoughts, feelings, and praise. In case you want to be technical about it: the WWE had some (terrible) comics out in the late 90s. This column doesn’t have anything to do with that, but maybe that will grant me the temporary pass for the week? Yeah… that’s the ticket.
On Monday evening, Brian Danielson – known to WWE fans as Daniel Bryan – retired from professional wrestling. He is 34 years old. As he would explain it to his hometown crowd in Seattle (Brian hails from Aberdeen, Wa), he’s simply no longer fit for in-ring competition. “I started wrestling when I was 18”, he began, “… and within the first few years I...

It seems as though the WWE Hall of Fame is more and more regimented, in that the induction class has to follow a specific pattern: one headliner, one woman, one tag team, one celebrity, and three or four other inductees that include no more than one deceased performer (so as to not upset people, it seems).
Looking back at the 2004 and 2005 classes, you had quite the haul of 1980s greats going in, from Hulk Hogan to Rowdy Roddy Piper to Jesse Ventura to Sgt. Slaughter, and a host of others. Few WWE eras were as cool as the 1980’s Rock ‘n Wrestling era, and the first five or so years of Saturday Night’s Main Event. Goofy and over-the-top as the era could be, it still holds up today.
One issue with the rote formula for choosing the recent Hall classes has been the logjam created among the eighties stars that should be recognized.

Wrestling is in a weird place right now. With WWE being the biggest wrestling promotion on a global scale, it pretty much has a monopoly on the business.
Throughout the eights the then-wwf was really beginning to pick up steam, with Hulk Hogan the face of the company. Despite a decrease in interest and the steroid trial, the WWF was in a rough patch. However, with the rise of Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock, the late nineties remain the WWE’s most successful period.
It was during the attitude era when Raw was attracting around six to seven million viewers on average, with matches such as The Rock v Mankind for the WWF title drawing in between seven and eight million people. Compared to today’s figures, the difference is massive.
One key issue between then and now isn’t the Attitude Era – WWE could easily...

Brock Lesnar versus Braun Strowman is on the books for SummerSlam, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting.
On top of that, Strowman is also set for a feud with Roman Reigns, which will presumably be a WWE Title feud. In Vince McMahon’s mind, he probably sees Hogan versus Andre.
To prepare the Black Sheep for all of that, the Observer says the WWE have plans to book him as the winner of this year’s Andre The Giant Battle Royal. That will kick start a big push, eventually culminating in the match with Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam.
This means the chances of Strowman versus The Undertaker at WrestleMania are over. “Any talk of Undertaker vs. Strowman now is 99 percent dead,” the Observer states.
That’s a relief, as that match would have undoubtedly sucked. At least against Lesnar at SummerSlam, Strowman will be in there against a...

Wrestling’s not all that different from legitimate sports in a number of regards, among them the ‘what could have been’ instances. In sports, it could be one play in a game that, had it gone just a smidge differently, could have swung an entire outcome. For wrestling, it comes down to decisions, both from the office and the workers. Had all hands on deck agreed to go a certain way with a proposed idea, wrestling history as we know it could be much different in many aspects.
WrestleMania lore is loaded with ideas that ended up crumpled and littered on the power broker’s floor. Maybe an injury changed fate. Maybe somebody exercised creative control and killed an idea. Perhaps Vince McMahon himself, going through one of his many abrupt changes of heart, decided to roll in a different direction, as he’s apt to do.
