The same recurring fantasy...
Coralknight7 December 2016
From the writer/director who seems to have the same recurring fantasy involving one or more heterosexual men who on some thin premise (or none at all) fall in love with another man comes "Derek and Cameron". As in the other short films of the same variety, this one gives us absolutely no motivation or background on the "straight" character, Derek, so we would possibly believe why a man who supposedly had zero attraction to men throughout his entire existence suddenly falls in love with another man to the extent that he wants to immediately have a long-term, sexual and monogamous relationship with him. Despite the fact that all the characters in every scene seem to just trade very poorly-written monologues with each other, not a lot is really said beyond cliché, dime-store romance novel dialogue. After several episodes, I still don't understand what the "issue" or conflict is in the story, other than the gay character, Cameron, is described as a "whore" by his supposedly close friends...that's it. Forget whatever REAL story might be hiding behind how a straight man suddenly "goes gay" and all the issues/baggage that would bring. The writer/director doesn't seem to know what really motivates straight men at all (hint: first rule of writing: write about what you KNOW...not what you fantasize about before your head hits the pillow) which makes this whole mess just not worth watching.
