Peter Sarsgaard Teases Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein Film: ‘A Romantic, Wild, Punk Monster Movie’
As Hollywood productions begin to pick up steam again, it seems as if everyone in the film industry has Frankenstein on their minds.
One of the year’s first studio releases was Diablo Cody and Zelda Williams’ “Lisa Frankenstein,” which reimagined Mary Shelley’s classic novel of reanimation gone wrong as a contemporary teen comedy. That film will be followed by two other high profile adaptations that entered production this month: Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” which stars Oscar Isaac as the mad scientist alongside Mia Goth and Jacob Elordi as The Monster; and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s upcoming sophomore feature, which reportedly stars Christian Bale as a version of Frankenstein’s monster who pursues love in 1930s Chicago in a riff on “The Bride of Frankenstein.”
Gyllenhaal’s film will be a highly anticipated event thanks to the success of her directorial debut “The Lost Daughter” and the A-list cast,...

Jacob Elordi is involved in a police investigation in his native Australia after allegedly assaulting a radio producer on Saturday.
As first reported by Australia’s Daily Telegraph, the “Saltburn” and “Euphoria” star was at a hotel in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs when he was approached by Joshua Fox, a producer for “The Kyle & Jackie O Show” on Kiis FM. According to Fox’s account of the situation on the show Monday morning, he asked Elordi if he could have some of his bathwater for Jackie O for her birthday — a reference to a viral scene in “Saltburn.” Elordi asked Fox to stop filming and delete the footage, and then the situation allegedly escalated.

When we recently compiled our list of science fiction movies based on true stories, one film that didn’t make the list was Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer. After all, the technology behind the nuclear bomb can no longer be said to be undiscovered, sadly. Nonetheless, Oppenheimer remains the archetypal science fiction story—one about a mad scientist who devises a new machine that changes the world through terrible unforeseen consequences. He is an an American Prometheus, yes, but also a regular Yankee Frankenstein. More than that though, by ushering in the nuclear age, Oppenheimer may have lit the fuse on the genre of cinematic science fiction.
It is hardly a new observation, but walk into any cinema in the 1950s and you will find no shortage of creatures, monsters, or occasionally people grown to giant size by the mysterious power of radiation. You don’t need to look too closely...

French President Emmanuel Macron made history on Tuesday as he appointed 34-year-old politician Gabriel Attal as France’s youngest ever prime minister.
Macron has a complex relationship with France’s cinema industry, where his pension reforms, attitude to cultural funding and support of Gérard Depardieu have come under fire from some quarters, but his new prime minister comes with interesting film world connections.
The new rising star of French politics is the son of late lawyer and film producer Yves Attal, who took credits on Pedro Almodóvar’s High Heels, Roberto Benigni’s The Monster and Bernardo Bertolucci’s Stealing Beauty.
Attal’s mother Marie de Couriss also worked in a production company.
As a teenager, Attal had a small role in Christophe Honoré’s 2008 drama The Beautiful Person co-starring Louis Garrel and Léa Seydoux.
But Attal chose not to follow in his parents’ footsteps.

When Eminem Apologized To Rihanna For His Diss Track Supporting Her Abusive Ex-bf Chris Brown ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Eminem is hands down one of the best rappers of the current times and has inspired many musicians. The rapper, born Marshall Bruce Mathers III, is known not only for his exceptional work but also for his talent for getting into several controversies. He once received a lot of flak for allegedly siding with Chris Brown, who was charged with domestic assault on RiRi in 2009. However, the rapper and RiRi have a good relationship and collaborated on multiple songs.
Marshall and the Fenty Beauty owner have collaborated on the song Numb from the 2012 album of the songstress Unapologetic. In 2013, they again came together and worked on Marshall’s LP 2 on the song The Monster. Both of them are established artists in the music industry. Hence, one can imagine the success they got from these two collaborations.

One of the summer's biggest horror movies is on the horizon in the form of "The Boogeyman," which is adapted from the Stephen King story of the same name. It hails from director Rob Savage, who made waves a few years ago with his made-for-nothing found footage horror flick "Host" during the pandemic. Now, Savage is back taking on source material from a master of the genre, and it sounds like he did a damn good job of translating the material (read our review here). The reveal of the monster at the center of this story actually scared the s*** out of audiences in early screenings to such a strong degree that they actually had to re-edit the movie to accommodate the reaction.
The filmmaker recently spoke with Empire in anticipation of the film's theatrical release this weekend. Savage explained that the reveal of the titular Boogeyman worked like gangbusters in test screenings.

Once upon a time, in the summer of 2016, Netflix debuted a sci-fi/horror ’80s homage from Shawn Levy and the Duffer brothers. Little was known about “Stranger Things” ahead of its premiere, and then the eight-episode season gripped the nation and world.
Beyond the endearing nostalgia, the series boasted an intriguing, layered mystery and a dynamite cast comprised mainly of breakthrough child actors. Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp, and Caleb McLaughlin became household names and forces of talent; Winona Ryder wowed audiences with her performance as Joyce Byers, and David Harbour became one of TV’s preeminent dads. Waffles and nosebleeds and D&d were changed forever. When the series concludes it will have run for almost 10 years and five seasons, the last of which have some of Netflix’s longest runtimes and largest production budgets.

Mad God is complete! Mad God is complete! Why aren't you jumping up and down with me right now? We first wrote about Mad God in 2017, but the roots of the film date back much further. Filmmaker and creature designer Phil Tippett is a creative genius, as well documented in Phil Tippett: Mad Dreams and Monsters, which was recently released as part of the magnificent The Monster Collection, which we reviewed here. In that film, snippets of footage from Mad God are included, along with the fervent wish expressed by several significant fellow filmmakers, imploring Tippett to complete the long-in-the-works project. And now comes word that the feature is complete, and that it will be premiering at the upcoming Locarno International Film Festival in...

Stars: Marin Ireland, Michael Abbott Jr., Julie Oliver-Touchstone, Lynn Andrews, Tom Nowicki, Michael Zagst, Xander Berkeley, Charles Jonathan Trott, Mindy Raymond | Written and Directed by Bryan Bertino
Bryan Bertino gained widespread acclaim with his debut feature The Strangers. However, neither of his following films, Mockingbird and The Monster found the same reception. The Dark and the Wicked sees him pulling out all the stops to try and rebuild his reputation. Not having been a huge fan of his previous films, I might not be the right person to ask. But if this film doesn’t put him back on the map I don’t know what will.
Louise and her brother Michael can’t remember when they last visited their parent’s farm. But they’re going back now. Their father (Michael Zagst) is dying and doesn’t have much time left. Their mother (Julie Oliver-Touchstone; Bounded by Evil) tells them not to.

The Venice Film Festival will honor Oscar-winning Italian actor/director Roberto Benigni with its 2021 Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.
Benigni, whose “Life Is Beautiful” – which he co-wrote, directed and starred in – won three Oscars in 1999, including best actor, recently returned to the big screen playing Geppetto in Matteo Garrone’s live-action adaptation of “Pinocchio.”

There’s a lot of great new stuff coming to Netflix in January, with over 75 titles being added to the streaming giant’s library over the course of next month. Unfortunately, it’s just the way it goes, though, that we’ve got to lose some old content to get new content and a bunch of movies and TV shows will be removed from the site across January as well. Thankfully, this coming month isn’t a huge one for losses, but there’s still a decent amount that’ll be departing.
Of course, the title that most Netflix users will be missing in January actually leaves on December 31st – The Office is being removed from the service on New Year’s Eve so that it can stream exclusively on NBC’s newly activated streaming platform Peacock. As such, here’s another reminder to binge all nine seasons of the...

Filmmaker Bryan Bertino certainly knows more than a few things about scaring people. From his terrifying debut, The Strangers (2008), to his follow-ups, Mockingbird (2014) and The Monster (2016), Bertino has kept his finger on the pulse of modern American fears. And this weekend he’s back, with his most alarming film since The Strangers. In The Dark and the Wicked, what comes knocking doesn’t just challenge the boundaries of home and safety, but faith and moral certainty.

The devil is in the details in “The Dark and the Wicked,” a horror film that teases out the evil presence descending on a grieving family on a Texas farm, with the same ambiguous, psychological heft of Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw.” His evocation of a familiar, domestic world mysteriously sliding into chaos feels all the more blood-curdling because the protagonists’ distress and helplessness are emotionally relatable.
Following its selection by the Tribeca, Fantasia and Sitges festivals, the film will be released theatrically stateside in November, and stream on Shudder in the U.K. and other select territories. Bertino can count on the enthusiasm of a niche but loyal genre fanbase for whom he built a reputation with three distinctively styled horror-thrillers — “The Strangers,” “Mockingbird” and “The Monster” — which also enjoyed a degree of critical recognition.

His family gathers to mourn, and soon a darkness grows, marked by waking nightmares and a growing sense that something evil is taking over the family. Marin Ireland stars in this, along with Michael Abbott Jr., Xander Berkeley, Lynn Andrews, Julie Oliver-Touchstone, and Tom Nowicki. (Press Association) Johnny Depp’s memory of his “disgraceful conduct” towards Amber Heard is “so severely impaired by drug use” that he may not have been aware of the extent of his “violence and terrifying behaviour,” the High Court has heard.
Lawyers for The Sun newspaper said there is a “wealth of evidence” to support Heard’s allegations of domestic violence by Depp, which paints a picture of the actor as “a hopeless addict who repeatedly lost his self-control and all ability to restrain his anger.”
Depp, 57, is suing the tabloid’s publisher, News Group Newspapers (Ngn) and its executive editor, Dan Wootton, over a 2018 article which labelled him a “wife beater”. The Pirates Of The Caribbean actor denies the allegations of violence made against him by Heard, 34.
On Monday, the case – the biggest English libel trial of the 21st century – entered its closing stages as Ngn’s legal team began making closing submissions.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Wednesday’s episode of “The Masked Singer.”)
“The Masked Singer” aired Season 3’s Group B championships on Wednesday, an episode that ended with three contestants set to move on to the finals and one cut and unmasked.
After Group B’s four remaining competitors, Banana, Kitty, Taco and Frog, performed, it was time for “Masked Singer” panelists Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger, Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke, along with guest judge T-Pain (who won the show’s first season as The Monster) and the studio audience, to choose the “weakest” contestant for elimination.
They picked Taco, who had performed “Can’t Help Myself” by The Four Tops. He was unmasked and revealed to be former “America’s Funniest Home Videos” host and current “Dancing With the Stars” host Tom Bergeron.

Those four join a Season 3 guest-judge roster and currently includes Jamie Foxx (who appeared on the special post-Super Bowl Liv season premiere), Fox’s “Outmatched” star Jason Biggs (who was on Episode 302) and Leah Remini, who will appear on Wednesday’s Valentine’s Day-themed episode.

While he's perhaps best known for creating one of the greatest comic book characters of all time with Hellboy, Mike Mignola has also brought many other characters to life on the paneled page in thrilling fashion, including Mary Shelley's classic literary creation, The Monster. Linking Shelley's Frankenstein with Mignola's Frankenstein Underground, all five issues of the upcoming comic book miniseries Frankenstein Undone will be released as a trade paperback this September from Dark Horse Comics, and as a special treat for Daily Dead readers, we've been provided with an exclusive reveal of Mignola's marvelous cover art for the anticipated collection.
Featuring The Monster and an eerily beautiful antler creature, Mignola's full cover art for the Frankenstein Undone trade paperback can be viewed below. Television’s breakout reality show, “The Masked Singer,” wraps up its second season, unmasking a winner, next week — but first, the quirky competition show will celebrate the holidays.
Teeing up the grand finale of the inarguable hit series, Fox is giving extra airtime to the show this week with a two-night event.
Tuesday night, the six remaining characters — the Fox, the Thingamajig, the Rottweiler, the Flamingo, the Tree and the Leopard — will perform with every contestant competing together for the first time, ultimately unmasking and sending one singer home. Wednesday night, two contestants will be sent home with a double unmasking during the semi-finals, which will be decked out for the holidays with decor, set designs and some characters singing Christmas songs, including “Winter Wonderland” and “This Christmas.” After the two-night semi-finals event, which begins both nights at 8 p.m., three finalists will be left to compete for the Season...
