Exclusive: Happy Face has rounded out its series regular cast, adding Khiyla Aynne (Circuit Breakers) and Benjamin Mackey (The Morning Show) alongside Annaleigh Ashford, Dennis Quaid, James Wolk and Tamera Tomakili. David Harewood (Homeland) also joins the upcoming Paramount+ drama series in a recurring role. The series hails from creator and executive producer Jennifer Cacicio and executive producers Robert and Michelle King. Filming began this week in Vancouver. See Ashford’s Instagram announcement below.
Happy Face is inspired by the true-life story of Melissa Moore; the Happy Face podcast from iHeartPodcasts and Moore; and the autobiography Shattered Silence, written by Moore with M. Bridget Cook.
In the series, jumping off from Moore’s true-life story, Happy Face (Quaid) is an incarcerated serial killer who also is Melissa’s (Ashford) once-beloved father. After decades of no contact, he finally finds a way to force himself back into his daughter’s life.

There are people out there who will tell you they don’t like romantic comedies. These same folks may as well confess that they’re dead inside, with a frozen void replacing where their heart once beat. You shouldn’t be their friend.
Romantic comedies are as old as the movies themselves. Generation after generation, audiences have sought out stories about the universal appeal (or agony) of love. And they’ve often wanted to laugh at it. When two characters—typically as photogenic as a camera lens demands—can generate real heat onscreen, and often channel that into knowing humor for the viewer, it’s more tangible than any visual effect. To wit William Shakespeare, it can create much ado about nothing, and it’s an absolute pleasure to laugh along with.
And despite the best efforts of some studios to drown the genre in the bathtub, rom-coms have endured in the 21st century,...

After watching a Quentin Tarantino movie, there's always a good chance you will walk away from it with an unanswered question or two. In "Pulp Fiction," it's never revealed what was in the glowing briefcase Jules and Vern pick up at the film's beginning. "Reservoir Dogs" leaves the fate of Mr. Pink ambiguous at the end of the film, never outright confirming the character's death. In "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," the circumstances surrounding the death of Cliff Booth's wife are left a mystery (unless you read the novelization). Tarantino has seemingly struck a delicate balance when crafting the world of his films. Either the director creates intricate and highly detailed backstories that leave no stone unturned (the Rick Dalton biography speaks for itself), or he prefers to leave select details entirely up to interpretation.
"The Hateful Eight" is a prime example of the latter, as the Western thriller...

Like many people passionate about movies, particularly those who grew up in the golden age of trash-talking critics like Pauline Kael, Judith Crist, Rex Reed, Gene Siskel, and Roger Ebert, Quentin Tarantino isn't shy about throwing an elbow or twelve when discussing cinema. He doesn't vacillate, nor does he spend much time discussing films that elicit a ho-hum response. You could say he likes to play contrarian, but that would suggest he's basically the Skip Bayless of film discourse. While you may vehemently disagree with Tarantino from time to time, he is anything but a full-of-it blowhard who spouts off inflammatory opinions to get a rise out of low-information fanatics. Tarantino knows his subject inside and out. If you want to enter his arena, you better come armed with ardor and a lifetime's worth of film knowledge.
This doesn't mean Tarantino can't be infuriating on occasion. This is, after all,...

Another weekend brings another serious dilemma for moviegoers: should Friday night be spent singing along with a talking crocodile or solving a mystery with three Hollywood superstars? Based on the box office numbers, the answer is ... neither! Why solve a crime or sing along when you can scream in terror thanks to Paramount's latest horror flick, "Smile."
In its second weekend at the box office, "Smile" is still going very strong. It's hard to believe that Parker Finn's directorial debut was once set to arrive exclusively to Paramount+, and execs have plenty to smile about after making the wise choice to premiere it in theaters instead. Per Variety, the film is now expected to beat out two other wide releases after earning 5.4 million on Friday from 3,659 theaters. This puts it ahead of both "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" and "Amsterdam," which earned 3.5 million and 2.6 million, respectively.

From September 15th until October 30th, I’ll be watching at least one new to me horror film every day, and providing collections of capsule reviews week by week. On Halloween itself, as ever, I’m planning an all day marathon of some of my favourite horror films.
I hope you’ll find it interesting following as I dig further into a genre I’ve always loved, and maybe find some hidden gems along the way yourselves.

With its list of new releases for October 2022, Amazon Prime Video isn’t fully aboard the spooky season train but it is at least spooky adjacent.
The biggest release this month is Prime Video original series The Peripheral on Oct. 21. While not outright horror, it does sound more than a little unnerving. Based on a 2014 sci-fi novel by William Gibson, The Peripheral stars Chloë Grace Moretz as a woman in a near-future society who may have just discovered an alternate reality. Fittingly, Westworld‘s Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy serve as executive producers.
The other TV series of note in October is The Devil’s Hour on Oct. 28. This British thriller comes form Steven Moffat and tells the story of a woman who wakes up at 3:33 a.m. (the devil’s hour) each night to receive a disturbing vision.
October is home to a couple of Amazon movies of note as well.

The representation landscape in Hollywood appears to be shifting once again.
Anonymous Content, the management and production company that’s backed The Revenant, Mr. Robot, and clients Samuel L. The latter has of the moment clients such as Top Gun: Maverick director Joe Kosinski, House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal, and Dan Trachtenberg, the director of Hulu’s most watched movie, Prey.
Spokespersons for both companies declined to comment but chatter of a possible merger surfaced in recent weeks. It is not clear in what stages the talks are in.
Anonymous, like several other large-size firms, is backed by private equity — Laurene Powell Jobs’ Emerson Collective is a financier — while Grandview/Automatik, founded in 2014 by former CAA agents, is one of the few significant concerns still in private hands. The...

I am going to spare you from another article lead-in using a negative variation of the title of "Don't Worry Darling," as I assume they have been done to death already. However, maybe you should worry a little bit about movie theaters and their attendance numbers, as The Wrap reports that the theater box office has hit its worst September levels in 25 years. Even worse is that it will also mark the first time since 2001 that a movie failed to make over 20 million in its premiere weekend.
This might sound a bit strange given the lineup of movies that have been released this month. Movies like "The Woman King" and "Barbarian" have been both critically acclaimed and somewhat successful at the box office for their budgets. However, it seems like many other movies released during the month actually underperformed compared to other September releases in years past. According to The Numbers,...

Very few procedural crime dramas have stood the test of time — the CBS series "Criminal Minds" concluded its incredible 15-season run in 2020 and has already received a revival order from the streamer Paramount+. Like showrunner-producer-writer Erica Messer said during the Television Critics Tour (via Deadline), the team behind "Criminal Minds" never wanted the show to end, and now they're coming back.
The crime drama told the story of a group of accomplished criminal profilers who worked for the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit and used their expertise to unearth the country's most dangerous minds, anticipating their next move before they could strike once again. The "Criminal Minds" revival, titled "Criminal Minds: Evolution," has already created an incredible buzz with audiences, thanks to six original cast members who are returning for the show. Just when you think you know everything about one of the most famous celebrities in the world, they always find a way to surprise us. The Academy Award-winning actor/producer has spent his entire life finding different hobbies and side projects to keep himself occupied when he's not being a movie star, including winemaking, sculpting, and apparently now, owning his own genderless skincare line. Brad Pitt has made the decision to let his product speak for itself, instead of turning himself into a spokesmodel in addition to a wellness virtuoso. During an interview with Vogue UK regarding the new product line, Pitt admitted that he was very close to playing a QVC-type host in a romantic comedy years ago, and would have starred alongside Sandra Bullock had the project moved forward. The two both made cameo appearances in their respective films "The Lost City" and "Bullet Train," but surprisingly have never headlined together on screen.

"Being John Malkovich" remains just as inventive and thought-provoking in 2022 as it was at the time of its 1999 release. The movie marked the feature film debut for screenwriter Charlie Kaufman and director Spike Jonze, and they have each gone on to impressive careers as both writers and directors in the years since. Starring John Cusack as Craig Schwartz, an unsuccessful puppeteer who finds a secret passage way into the mind of actor John Malkovich, the movie also stars Cameron Diaz as his dowdy wife, Lotte. I know what you're thinking: How could Cameron Diaz possibly look dowdy?
Diaz's appearance in the film may have been completely different from how audiences were used to seeing her, but her part was about so much more than Lotte's looks. The actress gives an impassioned and sincere performance as Craig's mild-mannered wife, who goes on quite a journey of self-discovery as the film progresses.

English actor John Hurt had an illustrious acting career. In addition to four BAFTA wins, including a lifetime achievement award, he was nominated for two Academy Awards for his contributions to the films "Midnight Express" and "The Elephant Man." Although Hurt was introduced to a younger audience with his role as the elderly wand-maker Mr. Ollivander in the "Harry Potter" franchise, the actor is one of Britain's finest talents. It's difficult even to process Animal Kingdom Season 6 Episode 13, as it marks this beloved series' conclusion, especially after those losses.
The cleverly titled "Fubar," which typically stands for "Fucked Up Beyond All Repair/Recognition," summed up the ruining of the Cody family, legacy, and kingdom.
J kept his damn promise to Smurf from Animal Kingdom Season 3 Episode 13, and he took it all.
The series finale will undoubtedly be one of those polarizing events where people either appreciate its straightforwardness or lament how things ended. I'm still working through my own feelings about it, so brace yourselves and grab a snack for a long review; you've been warned.
After months of speculation and some of the most creative, wild, outlandish, bizarre, and shocking theories by viewers, the real surprise of the actual finale is how predictable and direct it is.
Essentially, we got exactly what...

Of all the filmmakers of the modern era, few have such a recognizable style as Quentin Tarantino. Of course, Qt is known to switch things up from time to time, based on the period he wants to emulate in his films. But whether he's paying homage to the martial arts films of the Shaw Brothers, or delivering his own spin on the spaghetti Westerns of the '60s, Tarantino rarely strays from his heightened, highly-stylized look. That's not to say that Tarantino can't apply restraint, or even nuance if he feels so inclined. Compared to the pulpy energy of "Django Unchained" or the "Kill Bill" duology, "Jackie Brown" is uncharacteristically chill. It was only his third feature — directly following "Pulp Fiction" — but even then it was considered pretty understated for ol' Tarantino.

A piece of pop culture can mark a paradigm shift, even when it has no idea it’s doing so. (The lack of calculation is part of why the paradigm shifts.) That’s what happened in the summer of 1978, when the movie version of “Grease” came out. It ruled the way that “Saturday Night Fever” had just six months before, with the electric presence of John Travolta fueling both films. But “Saturday Night Fever” was a fiery and galvanic movie in a way that no one could miss. It was like disco Scorsese, with an unruly street vibe, some of the greatest songs — and dancing — ever to appear in a Hollywood film, and a performance by Travolta that was so extraordinary in its authenticity that it just about jumped off the screen. It was close to a great movie, and no one’s idea of a guilty pleasure.

Choreographer Jamal Sims, Dp Adam Santelli and casting directors Kristian Charbonier and Bernard Tesley helped director Tamra Davis realize her vision in adapting “13: The Musical” from the Broadway stage to Netflix, where it is now streaming
Davis, who had directed more than 150 music videos, and had done episodes of Disney+’s “High School Musical: The Musical,” says she not only wanted to acknowledge classic Broadway tropes but also “bring all my knowledge from music videos and pop culture and what I think will appeal to contemporary kids.” She and Sims created high-energy numbers that reference classic musicals as well as TikTok trends in dance and camera moves.

Are movie theaters finally back? Depends on who you ask, but one thing is for sure: Universal Pictures movies are certainly proving that audiences want to return to their local multiplex. The company announced on Sunday that it has grossed over 3 billion worldwide in a calendar year, making it the first studio since the pandemic began in 2020 to achieve this milestone.
The banner year comes courtesy — in large part, due to their popularity and subsequent box office returns — of two new franchise films, "Jurassic World: Dominion" and "Minions: The Rise of Gru," both of which are the latest, highly anticipated installments in their respective universes. According to The Wrap, "Dominion" brought in 976 million and "Rise of Gru" grossed another 790 million — which means the two movies have brought in more than half of the studio's global gross to date, which adds up to a whopping 1.76 billion from these two films alone.

Netflix released their movie adaptation of "13: The Musical" on Aug. 12, and the film - about a group of middle schoolers who struggle with love, friendship, and bar mitzvahs - is full of songs that will be stuck in our heads for weeks. It's also sending us down memory lane to the original Broadway production of "13 the Musical." The show broke barriers at the time, since it was the first (and so far only) to feature a cast and band that was made of just teens. But it's also memorable for another reason - Ariana Grande and Elizabeth Gillies were both in the original cast! In 2008, both joined the show during its pre-Broadway run, and they made the transfer to the Great White Way. Gillies played Lucy, while Grande played Charlotte.

The road to Netflix's screen adaptation of Jason Robert Brown's acclaimed broadway musical "13" has been over 10 years in the making. The original musical has had several showings worldwide since its 2007 premiere in Los Angeles, with New York City's Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre and London's Apollo Theater among some of the famous venues it has reached.
"13: The Musical" revitalizes Brown's original story nearly 15 years after its debut and features a strong cast that includes breakout star Eli Golden, along with beloved actors Josh Peck, Peter Hermann, and Debra Messing. The storyline behind the film, which centers around 12-year-old Evan Goldman (Golden) caught in the fallout of his parents' divorce while planning his bar mitzvah, sounds like it could be based on a true story, or at least partially based in reality.
While "13: The Musical" is not a true story, it does draw inspiration from real life.

In Netflix's "13: The Musical," based on the Broadway show of the same name, Eli Golden stars as Evan Goldman, a middle schooler who's obsessed with having the perfect bar mitzvah - even as his life seemingly falls apart amid his parents' divorce. Evan relies not just on his friends, but also his rabbi (played by Josh Peck), his parents (Debra Messing and Peter Hermann), and his grandma (Rhea Perlman) for advice and wisdom. And in real life, Golden also got lots of guidance from his more-experienced costars. Perlman and Peck specifically had great counsel for the 15-year-old about transitioning from a child star into an adult actor in the ever-challenging industry.
He tells Popsugar they recommended: "Don't get off the ground too much. Keep yourself level and keep yourself down. But at the same time, always push through and work harder than everybody else around you. If someone's working harder than you,...
